    Thanks for showing this. Most people would be too embarrassed to show themselves getting into trouble and making big mistakes like not wearing life jackets, not using lifelines and leaving the mainsail up in the teeth of an approaching thunderstorm. I used to fly in this area a lot and it wasn’t called “thunderstorm alley” without good cause.

    That was pretty intense. It seemed to come from nowhere and then having to choose to go through the narrow channel with rocks on either side and mistaking a navigation buoy for another ship was exciting for a few moments. You two work very well together and that is so wonderful to see the partnership. True comrades. It is rare to see that in these times where a lot of people don’t have traditional family values. You get to see what people are made of in times of these situations and both of you are calm, brave, quick thinkers. A lot of people really freeze in these moments.

    Watching the video, when you saw the storm and fired up the engine heading towards it I said outload don't forget your mainsail! Easy sat at home! Extra precaution i take is I use my jump leads and clip one on to a shroud and drop it over the side. Something an old timer told me to do, not sure of the physics of it or if in fact it does any good, feels comforting though!

    I got so involved that the thought of lifelines, and life jackets completely escaped me until I saw the comments. Great footage!

    We have been hit twice by lightning- once mid atlantic and once off the coast of Belize.. it's a very scary experience. Both times we lost all our electronics except the ones in the oven. The Atlantic experience was actually a white squall and we were knocked down. We used our radar to see a quick way out of the cell-wish I had thought of that sooner! Like us you have a heavily constructed boat which you will come to understand is a great comfort, lighter vessels sometimes have pinprick holes blown all along the waterline I so identify with the lack of vision its difficult not to panic when you are completely blind.Congratulations-you came through in one piece and in control.

    No life jackets? later in the video you explained that, but maybe a good idea to have some non hydrostatic PFDs on board too maybe for circumstances like that. Lesson for us all.

    Well done! Been in that situation a few times. Anyone tries to tell you what you should or shouldn't have done, sails an armchair. Fantastic that you were able to catch the experience and function also. From sipping wine to a roof of lightning and not making a drama our of it. You sail a beautiful boat and deserve every inch of her. Wishing you both many happy and safe passages to come. Cheers.

    So commendable that you had the wits to film through the rough patch! So many times we are just left with the story, days or hours later - which is not the same. Keep up the good work and always have a small GoPro clicked on somewhere...
    And is there any possibility to make a cover for the helm, it would make it much more comfortable in a storm.
    I have a boat in Montenegro (Kotor Bay), and have sailed in these areas for many years. The thunderstorms here are like nowhere else and also the sudden north off shore wind - the Bora - can be quite daunting, only surpassed by the Jugo, the southerly wind, which can raise waves of enormous heights... otherwise the Balkan Adriatic is the most beautiful and wonderful place to sail.

    I sourly remember a sailor’s golden rule (which actually rhymes in German): comes rain before the wind, hurry up and strike your sails. (Where else the other way round means first class sailing conditions ...)
    But well done, folks. Thrilling, really - thanks. Peter the Pirate

    Really well done, I for one would never shut down my radar so as to see in those storms, I would rather have it get burned and I believe it would get burned even if turned off should you get hit by lightning. So many navigate by ipad now and you displayed a perfect example of why it is not enough. Thank you and love your videos.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you're right in saying the radar (along with all the other electronics) would be toast on or off with a strike. But actually the odds of a strike are much lower than the likelihood of some serious pulses from the close proximity of the lightning. If you watch the video closely the electro magnetic spikes hitting us were enough to upset the camera recording on close strikes, I think had the instruments been on I would have had damage. The iPad's not perfect for navigation by any means but it's a bloody good back up and I'm very glad I had it, and a spare in the oven!

    • @Valden23
      @Valden23 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@svfairisle Steve, may I ask, what navigation app were you using on the iPad during the storm? I've planned to use an iPad to mirror our B&G chartplotter, but when that's off, I might have to use a native chart app directly on the iPad (C-Map? Navionics?), or even Google Maps. But I'm not too sure Google has got street-view well sorted where that cardinal mark was. :-/

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Valden23 I use Navionics which I would strongly recommend. You can use it on several devices under the one license as well, so we have a spare ipad and phones with it on for redundancy. The ships plotter is navionics as well, which actually isn't as good as the ipad version!

    We got hit with a Bora gusting up to 50 knots, with heavy rain, in the early hours of the morning, a bit further north to where you were headed. It was not much fun, but all turned out ok with no damage. Contact lenses worked far better than glasses in such conditions.
    You folk handled that storm like bosses! Never thought of using the oven like a shield for electronics!

    • @MichaelBuck
      @MichaelBuck 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The oven acts like a "Faraday Cage/Sheild", pretty cool.
      A Faraday cage or Faraday shield is an enclosure used to block electromagnetic fields. A Faraday shield may be formed by a continuous covering of conductive material, or in the case of a Faraday cage, by a mesh of such materials. Faraday cages are named after scientist Michael Faraday, who invented them in 1836.

    Hey Guys. Great video as usual, perfectly demonstrates how 'varied' Med sailing can be. FYI the 'freaky looking catamaran' is 'Gleda'. She's a James Wharram designed Tiki 38 I built in a barn near Warwick, UK. I sold her last year and she's now in Venice under the care of her new German owner. What a lovely surprise to see her. Freaky? OK, maybe. But to me she's beautiful!

    It might be an advantage to look at the greater picture, such as where are the high and low pressures and when sailing close to the coast maybe consider sea breeze. Rising air over land will 'suck' air from the sea towards land. As you propably know high pressure seek towards low pressure. But I guess thunderstorms are quite unpredictable! Everyone seems to be worried with what they perceive as lack of safety gear, I'm touched by their concern! It probably looks different from actually being there, but I can tell you my only concern was getting hit by lightning. The seas were flat in an off shore wind, certainly no need to strap on, just wasn't that sort of weather and it was 35 degrees so although it might have looked weird getting soaking wet I didn't even consider donning the oilys. On balance it would have probably been prudent to put the life jacket on, if only for the camera, people seem to think I should set an example although I don't see myself in that role, these arn't public information films we're making! Judy did bring it up & I didn't put it on because it was so wet. I've had one self inflate on me while sitting on the bow sprit of a classic yacht filming. The shock of it going off was the closest I've ever come to falling overboard! So it's all just personal choice, I'm happy with my choices others may have chosen differently and that's fine, they may even be able to debate that their way was safer. But I felt perfectly safe and that's the point I think.

    Welcome to Croatia! Do not worry, those thunder storms are sporadic, not so often. Keep an eye when you have Jugo or Bura wind and enjoy many islands!

    Great to see the value of professional camera work. In most cases, the camera would have been put down while the action was happening. Super post and very informative. I'd recommend a LifeProof cover for the iPad. Not cheap but robust and waterproof and, unlike most protectors, the screen isn't covered so touch operation isn't compromised. Croatia is a beautiful area to sail.

    16:00... Mixing the marker and a mast is similar to my wheelwoman mixing up a cargo and a small island at about 2 miles distance... Lol.. thanks for sharing, that seemed quite a tense moment!

    I was always wary off shore and had jack lines on my Han's Christian 43 cutter and wore a harness and tether when leaving the helm and working the sails. Storms can be scary, especially at night. I did a lot of single handed sailing up and down the American coast from Maine to Florida.

    Super exciting footage guys. One question: If you have everything switched off and hit by lighting, can one expect any damage to the systems/wiring on the yacht? Well done for remaining calm 👏 Bravo

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes you will almost certainly still get damage. A direct hit can cause structural damage as well. Turning things off is more for voltage spikes without a direct hit which are all around when you're that close. You even see the picture break up as the recording is hit by huge electromagnetic spikes as I'm recording. There are comments on here from people who think lightning is not a big deal and staying off shore in the storm is better than trying to avoid it by any means available. I think that would be a bad choice in most circumstances and getting out from the storm is a priority. I will get more information from experts in the field and produce a video on electrical storm techniques this winter.

    One of the disadvantages of hot weather are those electric squalls. Turn and run for a while was an option. That storm will pass.

    Great episode. Thanks for sharing! Wow, it’s winter coming already? That lockdown sure screwed times up. Course we in US are still fighting to just get people to comply. Sad since I love to travel but no one will let us in without extended quarantine. Don’t blame them but ....

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it's a bit harsh, we have a Patreon with a boat in Spain that hasn't been able to come out all year & they've sold their house in the States to live on the boat! We were tested when we got to Italy. I don't know why they can't do that for people that need to travel.
