It was only recently, that I had the good fortune to discover your channel and have since subscribed and watched many of your videos - all of which have been excellent. You can never really know how much your content is valued and how it assists people like myself on our musical journey but I just wanted to reach out and express my appreciation. Ps: the “Steve” character was a real Spinal Tap moment and made me laugh out loud. Cheers to you mate for your efforts and I eagerly await future videos.
Thank you - very thorough and clear, perfectly delivered. Love the fact that you are covering the absolute basics with no assumption of prior knowledge. And it’s free!! ❤
WOW!!! This has been the most helpful vid I've seen on YT for understanding keys. I've watched 100's of vids on YT and only you explained this stuff to the level where I'm at (very beginner). Thank you very much.
I am resisting binging your music theory vids! Trying to take notes (no pun intended) and noodling it all out on the guitar. Thank you for such excellent instruction!
This is super helpful. I am in my early 40 and it’s my 4th attempt to learn to play on a guitar. Even though I know some chords and basic scales knowing the music theory is glueing it all together. I have heard most of what you have said from several of paying friend and few coaches but it never fully made sense. Rewatching you and going through my notes it all started to form one. Please keep making these videos
Though I’m a bit further ahead in my music knowledge I’m glad your making these videos as you explain stuff at a very basic core level which a lot of people skip over to speed up the process. Despite it making the videos much longer I don’t mind as your personality doesn’t make it demeaning and you are quite entertaining
Just started out learning guitar a couple of months ago. It really helps understanding music and getting a hang of playing some on my own ^^ Thank you a lot for your awesome music lessons!
So am I to equate the tonic with the root or can I play in the key of A and my tonic be other than A? Also what about other scales other than major? Can I begin a series/set with Major and play Minor as well? What is the difference between Key and Tonic given that I can begin major and minor on the same note?
Hi mate. Yep root note and tonic are the same thing. Different words with same meaning. In terms of either a scale or a chord, the root note is the note the rest of the chord or scale is built from. So, the A major scale, root note is A. The A minor scale, root note is A. A major chord, root note is A, A minor chord root note is A. You get the idea. In all those cases it's A. Where I think you might be confused is, remember root (or 'tonic') is a note (not a chord). So whether you are in A major or A minor, the note that starts of each scale is A, so A is the 'tonic' of each. I've got another video up now dealing with minor scales if you want to have a look. I'm not sure what you mean by Can I begin a series/set with Major and play Minor as well?"" sorry. Also, I'm going to do a summary video soon which will cover some of the questions people like yourself have, so keep them coming.
@@RizHallowes thank you I am very glad to have discovered your channel, good work. ☺️ by the way I guess my real questioning is do I begin a scale with the lowest note/root or can I play the Tonic/First note as any note in the scale of a key such as A for example can A the lowest note be my second note rather than my Tonic? This leads me to question if I can play a portion of major or minor together so long as I'm in the key of A
@@kevinbuenoartbywave ah, I see what you are saying. If you are writing a melody or soloing you can start on any note you want. The scale is just the collection of notes you can use. There's no reason to force yourself to start on A. As long as you are only playing those notes you can go as low or high as you want to any note you want. So yes you can go low and finish on any other note. A minor on the other hand is an entirely different key. Watch the video I have up on minor keys. A minor relates to C major. I'm doing a vid soon to cover questions people have had and I'll include this.
