Ahsoka Tano Is Proof That Weaker Characters Can Be Redeemed

- When Ahsoka Tano was first introduced into Star Wars canon in the Clone Wars animated movie, it was clear that fans were not happy with Anakin Skywalker's new Padawan. But as time went on, Dave Filoni and the rest of the Clone Wars staff evolved Ahsoka into being one of the most popular characters in the Star Wars Universe. And now that we have our live action Ahsoka Tano, it seems the fandom will only continue to grow within the Star Wars community.

She was never a weak character. She was a child / early teen and all we saw of her was from Anakin's perspective; she annoyed him, and that had as much to do with him not being ready to be her Master as with her being willful and arrogant. They clashed. As she matured her personality became more fleshed out and we got to see that.
People saying this probably hid in the school bathroom telling themselves how wrong other people are, when really they don't understand the way people are and that's no reflection of their character. In reality... Ahsoka was exactly how you can expect a 14 year old to be and even then her spirit, spunk, bravery, willingness was admirable.
"I'm no jedi" may be one of the best lines and moments ever said in the star wars universe. Because we care about Ahsoka and Anakin, and seeing everything unfold is just what Star Wars is all about while also pushing the narrative forward.
The Obiwan, Anakin, Ahsoka sinergy is just great.
It is a very smart part of the series as it has such a deep meaning that everyone glosses over because of how tough it makes her sound.
In reality, it was this line that caused her to fail the most important task in the universe, which was saving Anakin.
Saying that to Vader told him that Anakin had failed to train a jedi with his own values, and thus Anakin was worthless. It reminded him of when she abandoned him when he needed her the most, twice. And even made him see her as a liar and a hypocrite like the old jedi order as she was aligned with some of the surviving jedi of that order.
And this is all juxtaposed to when Luke saves him in the end when he said “I am a Jedi, just like my father was before me.” Thus showing him that Anakin did have value and it was Vader who was wrong and weak.
Obviously she had to fail because we know it is Luke who succeeded in the end, but it is a good character moment for her as it shows just how flippant and lost her values are at the time.
Was she ever REALLY a bad character to begin with? Or was she a carefully crafted bundle of flaws that were intended to fall away to reveal someone that fans would end up falling in love with because they watched her grow and evolve into someone we could love?
Probably a mix of both. I feel like the writers wanted to make a "carefully crafted bundle of flaws" but that obviously didn't happen as the early writing didn't support that. She was a bundle of flaws, sure, but those usually come with consequences. If it was carefully crafted, for every time she succeeded despite her flaws, she'd also be punished another time. So she would learn that there were times where her "Flaws" were actually her strengths, if used in the correct way, at the correct time, while also accepting that her way wasn't always the best, and could end up hurting herself and others, and that she should accept the teachings of others.
Your perspective puts too much faith in the writers imo. If they were as careful as you say they were the movie would actually have been an Avatar the last air bender level introduction to her story, and the beginning of the series would be like Book 1. That clearly didn't happen. They fumbled through figuring out her character just like they did figuring out the rest of the movie and show. And they eventually got it right. But they by no means started right.
Yes, she was terrible. She was an annoying child that always caused the problem in every early episode. Even worse, she was just a copy of a akin and their "disobeying orders" anakin could have pushed the same "got myself in a sticky situation" plots without her.
She was also only created for tiny kids to have someone to relate to. That's her origin, and why they broke jedi lore with a Knight taking a padawan.
The only fans who "grew up to love her" were small kids like yourself who watched any cartoon that came on TV because you didn't know what bad writing was, and by the time you did you'd already gotten far and her character was more fleshed out.
@@wile123456 “she was an annoying child” wow you mean the 14-year-old character was acting her age? Shocking 😂
Also, she wasn’t a “carbon copy of Anakin” by any means. The extent of Anakin and Ahsoka’s personalities was never “screw the rules, I do what I want!” They’ve both always been more than that…and even the early seasons showed how they were different from each other in some ways.
@@violetlavi2207 you're insulting all 14 year olds on the planet. 🤡 They don't have to be annoying, you're just excusing bad writing. News flash but 14 year olds has a personality outside of being annoying. Ashoka was 1 dimensional in the first few seasons.
"different from each other" yet you couldn't mention a single example. How curious 😂
@@wile123456 I’m speaking from experience 😂 I was a 14-year-old girl once. For that matter, I quite liked Ahsoka in the early seasons, I’m speaking to older fans who call her annoying. Because…news flash, those ARE typical teen girl antics, and if you don’t like them or find them annoying, that reflects on how you see teen girls 🤷♀️
Ah my apologies, I assumed you’d actually watched the show 😂 you would’ve recognized their differences if you had. Here’s one clear example for you: remember that one episode of Ahsoka and Barriss trapped in the tunnels (or trapped in a room with the creepy brainworms) while both times, Anakin could do nothing to save her. Ahsoka was able to calm down and act rationally, while Anakin got more angry and desperate to save her. There’s a difference for you (it’s a difference that grew and developed in them both over the course of seven seasons…there’s a number of reasons why Ahsoka never fell while Anakin did, and this is one of them)
I had no idea people hated her so much. I loved her character from the get go and I enjoyed seeing her grow into what she is now. She always seemed to me to be the perfect Padawan for Anakin because of their similarities, and it's because of that that I imagine her now as what Anakin could have been had he not given in to the Sith.
It's crazy that you guys made this video because I just watched a video about how the writers "fixed" Ahsoka in 4 episodes and that her character being so annoying was intended from the start so that they could have her alongside these very well established characters and wouldn't feel out of place. And I agree that Ahsoka does so well as a character now because we got to see the character grow and develop into this badass former jedi and not just start out as a Mary Sue type character
true the director of the show told the voice actor that people will dislike her at the start. So, they knew that and intended to do it. and to slowly build character arc, I think they do not get the credit they deserve for this character development.
@@matthewzimmerman92 its beautiful honestly, The Clone Wars is one of the best things to spawn from the Star Wars universe
What even more important with Ahsoka's character was, her growth makes Anakin's fall even more tragic.
Without her bridging Episode 2 and 3, Anakin's fall was just something to be expected.
But with her completing Anakin's background, there's now more credence into his fall.
It’s amazing how far Ahoska came. Also, The Clone Wars movie is a guilty pleasure of mine.
Why do you call it a "guilty pleasure"? TCW is one of the most beloved pieces of Star Wars media across the fandom.
@@nickiii2458 While the show is awesome, the movie was only made to serve as a pilot for the show. But in spite of the movie’s flaws, I thought it was a decent flick.
@@roberttreacy8271 Ohhhhh that's my mistake. I completely missed that you said The Clone Wars Movie. I thought you were talking about TCW as a whole (show included).
I'm with you though, I always enjoyed the movie while also understanding all of the criticism it received.
Mine 2 loved it watched it many times tell tornado got it 😅 oh well
It's the movie that introduced me to Star Wars in the first place, so I don't blame you
yesss!! been re-watching clone wars and it’s the best thing watching her grow so encouraging
Wondering how many people complaining about Ahsoka were even in the target audience at the time of watching the show. As someone who watched and love the clone wars as a kid, Ahsoka was always my favourite character. She starts out as a flawed young teenager in a war zone (who gets many of her flaws from trying to be more like her master...) and she grows as a character. Admittedly sometimes the writing *did* fail her, and had her act shittily in more irritating ways (through the impact being large or the consequences/lessons being minimal). But it did that for all the characters imo, people just already had an attachment to the pre-established ones (and I doubt it helped that she was a teenage girl with occasional irritating teenager moments). She's made, in many ways, for the kids that were meant to watch the show, and I think it was done well looking at it that way.
I kind of liked Ahsoka from the show but I never knew people actively disliked her. I honestly didnt see a lot of the stuff she did prior to ep 19 as a problem. Have yet to actually finish Clone Wars tho so theres a lot I still need to watch.
Definitely made me happy to see her in the Mandolorian tho.
My fave character in the whole franchise, her arc through TCWs is masterfully done. Mauls line to her in the finale truly resonates. Everything she had done lead her to that moment. It's a line that triggers memories of all she had done over the show. I'm already sick of people being sick of her because she keeps showing up. Let her story finally be finished, she's earned the right to let her story conclude
"I admit Ahsoka is a little rough around the edges. But with a great deal of training and patience. . . she might amount to something."
Anakin just described himself in one sentence.
He saw much of himself in her.
I may be in the minority but I liked Ahsoka from day 1. I was immediately intrigued by her design; probably helps that I binged the film then the series right after, so I got to witness the progression of her growth. Still one of my all time favorite SW characters to this date. 😍 Rosario Dawson too.
So did I
There's definitely a few other commenter's I've seen say the exact same thing. I, too, loved her from day one of the Clone Wars Series. I think her and Anakin's personalities fit so well together and they ultimately grew up with each other. 😄😍
Still my favorite Star Wars character, both because she represents the era of Star Wars I grew up with and because she is just a well written child.
She was not a weak character. Being an annoying character does not make one weak. It was her arc that made her the best character of all star wars.
Not necessarily, but it can be a sign of a weak character, especially if they don't grow. It usually means the writer thinks the character is a-okay as they are.
The best character in all of Star Wars? I wouldn't even call her the best character in her own show, no offense. And quick question, have you ever heard the names Luke, Han, Leia, Yoda, Obi-Wan, Anakin, Thrawn, Revan, Bane, Sion, Nihilus, and who is most likely the actual best character in Star Wars, Kreia?

I clicked so fast, Ahsoka is probably my favorite character in all of Star Wars!
Cool
Same here! I got so mad for that one episode from The Clones where none of the Jedi believed her when she was accused of something she didn't do but Ankin had her back.
It's a definitely for me. One of my favorite characters period.
Literally one of the best redemption arcs i've seen, I was about the same age as Ahsoka's character when she first premiered and all those traits you mentioned annoyed the shit out of me for a good while until she started becoming wiser and less of a brat, she ended up being one of my favorites in the franchise by the end of the old Clone Wars run.
I always liked ahsoka because she always did what she thought was correct no matter what everyone else said. Which is something i find very respectable.
There were better characters before her
I wanna see one of these for Ezra. I love how important Ashoka is, but Ezra is such an amazingly developed character, and see get to see him grow in a way similar to her.
Yeah, his path to becoming a Jedi is similar to Anakin's, but in reverse. I like it!
Ezra is a shit ass Aladdin parody who rips off Gapen Marek. As for Ashoka, she is only important cux dave filoni cant let her go
@@thisguy1413 Wow, nice insult…..*NOT*. Yes, dumbass, i did say it on my own. Let me give you some names
Padme Amiddala
Leia Organa Solo
Mara Jade Skywalker
Siri Tachi
Visas Marr
Kreia
Nomi Sunrider
These are female characters that existed before Ashoka that are way better than her. Ashoka’s arc, while decent on its own, is nothing compared to those of these other characters all the while stamping on continuity.
As for Ezra, play the force unleashed and you will see how he rips off Galen Marek like how Kanan ia a ripoff Kyle Katarn, Rahm Kota, dahs jennir, and jax pavan
@@ck-1649 I never thought of it like that, that's very true!
Facts. He's one of the best characters in Star Wars and only those who don't understand hate him. Rebels is full of great characters. The Mandalorian and its derived shows can only wish to have characters like them.
Hot take
Nowadays a lot of people want the shortcut
They want the development results without actually putting in the time to get the know the character
If there’s no development after five minutes then they are treated as a bad character
They want the destination without the journey
Unfortunately no one is patient anymore if they aren’t hooked right away then it’s dismissed as bad whether a character or a show
Very very true. Thank you.
You just said what I’ve been trying to say about this Fanbase for years.
i love that she was intentionally made annoying and a unlikable character to begin with so she could grow into a character we all love.
Ahsoka is, in my opinion, the luke skywalker of the clone war era jedi. She represents what jedi should be, while growing a lot over the course of her initial appearance. Her character has a lot of parallels to both anakin and luke really, but her arc reminds me more of lukes arc than anakin’s does
Even if her existence as Anakin's Padawan doesn't quite make sense, I found her addition to be really helpful to Anakin's character development. Idk I always thought his sudden turn to the dark side in the third movie seemed rushed; having the context from both of the Clone Wars animated series, especially this one, really adds to Anakin's development specifically. It gives me more context for his story.
And while I did find Ahsoka annoying at first, seeing her growth over the series was so rewarding.. even if it was heartbreaking.. And we have to remember she was literally just a teenager, a teenager thrown into the midst of literal war and carnage.. There's no easy way for anyone, let alone a child to process that and deal with it "maturely". It highlights flaws in the Jedi Order as well imo by just having her as a child there in the first place, and then the way she was treated by her own comrades later in the series..
I think it's safe to say whether we found her annoying or not, that we're all so proud of Ahsoka Tano for how far she's come 💗
Watched TCW for the first time last year and seemingly went through the same journey as everyone else: couldn't stand her and later loved her. I just worry Disney will go overboard and over-saturate us with her. We shall see.
Hope not
The Clone Wars was the last thing that ever had George Lucas's creative stamp on in Star Wars, and boy did he go out with a bang.
I'm just finding out people disliked Ahsoka. She was a great character. She initially acted like a gifted teenager with some stubborness and grew to learn the world, and her place in it. Furthermore, intentionally or not, she was someone that possessed enough of the same character traits as Anakin, so pairing them would help Anakin grow by realizing how difficult he is to deal with amongst others.
Ahsoka really is the fandom feeing towards the prequels in a nutshell. Starts off on shaky grounds but grows to be more and more appreciated before eventually being outright loved 😊
The prequels were always good from the start and Ahsoka was too, annoying kid being annoying and slowly maturing was always the intent. It's not her fault that older fans can't handle silliness

I wish we had more interactions between Plo Koon and Ahsoka
she's basically a prodigy. and a teen. how was she supposed to be written? i'll never understand the hate of early Ahsoka.
She was initially written that way on purpose.
"I'm no Jedi." is a line that hits so hard, with the context.
I cry a little bit every time I watch Ashoka’s “I am no Jedi” scene.
Boy, I wish Ahsoka’s arc had ended - in an alternate universe where the Sequels are different - with her becoming the first and most trusted among Luke’s Knights. That would have given her a fully valid reason to be such a big part of Anakin’s story.
I honestly never had much of a problem with her. She was a little annoying in the clone wars, but A: She's 15, and she acts like she's 15. B: One of her worst crimes is not being as strong as Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, and C: SHE'S A CHILD IN A WARZONE
The Clone War series turns me into a Star Wars fan
Especially because of Ahsoka
Patience
You would think that people would learn their lesson but they don’t they repeat the cycle for dozens of other characters whether in Star Wars or not
I think the Ahsoka Show is a perfect place to bridge a myriad of wonderful concepts from new and legends. I want to see Mara Jade as Thrawn's right hand. I want to see Bariss Offee again too, her fates unknown, and she's a wonderful mirror for Ahsoka.
This is a wild video, cause what you guys are talking about is watching Ahsoka's character arc progress in the way it was supposed to 💀
Idk I feel people don't realize with child characters, they're supposed to grow??? Like she was NEVER A BAD CHARACTER, she just had character development
Most definitely my favorite character. And so exited for the new series.
Not too sure she could've ever been classified as "Weak". Yoda recommended her, after all. Even when her character received all that fan-hate, she was still confidently obnoxious, a little...snippy, and very talented. Watching her mature, mellow, and master her feelings was quite the journey. I was a forever Luke guy until The Clone Wars. Now, I rank Ahsoka, and even Kanan ahead of Luke, and I will totally admit that that's because Luke didn't have nearly the fantastic writing that the other two had.
People that think Ashoka was a "weak" or "bad" character in the beginning just fundamentally misunderstand the character and character development to begin with...
She's a great character I've seen the 2008 movie and now you talking about this reminds me how bad she was before she became one of the most loved characters in the franchise
I’ve been rewatching the clone wars and I’ve come to appreciate her character development.
When she left the Jedi order it was shocking to me when I watched it when I was younger but now I’m bawling at that scene
Ahsoka has the best charecter arc ever she’s the best better then any original charecter
One of my top 5 favourite characters! Her character growth has come a long way!
I don't 100% agree with the characterization of her poor start, but in the end it doesn't matter too much because, yes, she became one of the most fleshed out and beloved characters we've ever seen in Star Wars.
She sits in this sweet spot of incredibly important, but not galactically centric and because of that her existence and story breathe so much life and realism into the universe.
Dude, she was just a teenager during the TCW movie. Can ppl just cut teens some slack already?
Wait so character arcs and development is important for stories. I thought they were supposed to be perfect and never fail. Wow that’s crazy.
It took at least until TCW Season 3 for public sentiment on Ahsoka to change. Of course, good luck finding anyone who will say they didn’t like her at first. 😅
Ahsoka is everything star wars should have always been. Clone Wars despite all of it's flaws will most likely always be the best thing to come out of star wars. That includes original trilogy.
Ahsoka is my favourite character in all of Star Wars. Her character development, arc, and relationships are amazing! The Clone Wars season 7 (especially the final few episodes) was so epic!
She was never a bad character, just a realistic kid with force abilities....all of us would have been just as annoying as young Jedi, she was perfect for developing.
People are gonna be coming back to this when Ahsoka comes out.
She's my favorite character. Sure, she was annoying as a child. Quick question, what child is not annoying? 😂
She grew up to be incredible. Legit cannot wait for her live action show. Her blips in disney+ are some of the best.
I -want- can’t wait to see live action Grand Admiral Thrawn, Ezra Bridger and Sabine Wren.
Ahsoka grew as Rey never did.
That's why Ahsoka is a beloved character and Rey plainly sucks!
Ahsoka is the best character in Star Wars, and one of the reasons I love the Clone Wars so much

Ashoka is one of my fav Star Wars characters!
I actually liked her from the beginning starting with the movie and she got better & better finishing off with best arc of Clone Wars in the last 4 episodes of season. Plus her & Anakin have the best ever big bro/little sis & master/apprentice(padawan) relationship ever in any TV show or movie. So great that it makes me cry over a cartoon multiple times.
Ahsoka, Maul and Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader are my top 3 Star Wars characters! They are so well written and it’s all to do with the Filoni verse! Honorable mentions include Captain Rex, Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Ghost Crew, and R2-D2.
Asoka is my second favorite character in Star Wars and I have been a fan since seeing return of the Jedi in theaters.
Since I saw Clone Wars, she has been my favourite character. I don't see that changing anytime soon.
We literally watched ahsoka grow up... they grow up so fast (I promise im not crying rn)
She was annoying to begin within rewatches but thankfully I grew up with the character so initially I actually almost related to her and learnt as she learnt, grew as she grew. Obviously because of this I’m bias in saying she’s my favourite character in Star Wars but I do really think she is the most nuanced, cool and outright wise character in the universe as of right now.
Ahsoka was never a weak character. She was used with a common trope in fiction called 'Character Development'. It is hilarious that you mistake it fir redemption. Everything about this character was deliberately planned, even the unlikable aspects in her earlier appearances. Dave Filoni even outright stated that they always planned to make her annoying and develop her from there, to show a kid growing up in a war zone and having her naivety gradually wiped out.
If nothing else is certain, she is Disney's last best hope to do something interesting with Star Wars.
I always say it hurts every time watching the episodes that she walks away from the jedi
i think the idea is she's a mirror of anakin, a bit of insight into the fate that would've befallen anakin had he not fallen to the dark side
Every character has to develop. Most heroes don't start out as badasses they go through the heroes journey. I really like how you portrayed the development of ahsoka. She's beloved. I for one was an ahsoka nay sayer at first now I'm on that bandwagon
The voice of Ahsoka, Ashley Eckstein, is married to World Series MVP David Eckstein (LA Angels, 2001).
Disney owned the Angels then but sold them in 2003.
David was an obscure Disney employee, but achieved large second hand success for them.
Then he met his wife and her work eventually became Disney property - becoming one of their more popular SW characters.
It's cool to me how 2 of Disney's biggest non traditional employees (Ashley, because her work was an acquisition.) found love randomly...almost like a Disney story itself.
Disney and the Angels still remain close. I'm not sure that many fans are even aware of that connection. They host a Star Wars night every year..missing out on a great cross promo.
Ahsoka was an interesting foil to the Jedi. They taught her a lot, but through her we also see their failing. When she leaves, it saves both her life and her personal integrity.
I still wonder how she reacted on learning that Anakin had children. 😉
I loooove Ahsoka!!! ❤❤❤
Loved this video so much. Thanks Nerdstalgic
So… is it safe to trust the Star Wars franchise with Dave Filoni?
Absolutely.
I'd love it if they did something similar to what DC did, where the position is shared by 2 people-one to handle the business and the other to handle the creative side. While DC have yet to release any of the Gunn/Safran projects, I have faith in Gunn due to his track record, and if they did a similar thing with Filoni and some other guy to handle business, I think Star Wars would definitely be in safe hands
This take on ashoka confuses me because everyone I know always liked her maybe because we were the target audience
I liked her in rebels which her coming in later stuff including the final season of clone wars was more welcoming.
She became my favorite when she returned in Rebels.

She was a good friend...
Interesting point. But there’s a difference between a bad and flawed character. A bad character can be redeemed. A flawed one can grow. Ahsoka was a bad one but was redeemed.
Dave Filone developed Ahsoka this way on purpose. He know that it would be hard to introduce a new character this big at this stage without the fans hating her, so he got ahead of them and made her intentionally annoying so she could have character growth and a satisfying arc.
This would be the only one of your videos I've seen that I disagree with! Filoni has said on Ahsoka that she was written to be unlikable so they could give her a respectable arc, and knowing that most fans wouldn't immediately accept a new character. All of her character design was intentional, which still makes her annoying, but by no means is she a bad character or written poorly. Great video as always though!
Thank you "Kevin Kiner". Thank you "Jamie Evans Music".
Ahsoka is the proof of how good writing will pay itself later, too bad they can’t do the same with old Luke.

Yeah ahsoka is by far the best character. If ur a prequels fan, she us the padawan of ur favourite jedi. If ur an originals, she is the padawan of ur favourite sith lol. Either way, ahsoka has earned her place as a fan favourite. Especially in mandalorian, i love her actress kn clerks 2 lol super fine latina😙😙😙
What if you’re both? 🤔
Dave Filoni intentionally made Ahsoka annoying so that he could control WHY fans dislike her. He knew that a brand new character being one of the main characters would be disliked because fans mostly want their established fan favorite characters.
You can’t do much with that to make fans like a new character. So by controlling why she was disliked he was able to make her a fan favorite by having her grow out of those intentional character flaws.
So Brilliant.
