    Thanks for the tip. When I took the old screen door off the frame, it fell apart at the joints. For the new door, I cut the corner braces and glued and screwed them like you showed. Then I treated the entire frame with Thompson’s water seal. The door comes with two spring loaded hinges so I bought two more and used all four hinges. Might be a little overkill but this door is now solid without any sag. Thanks! (Total investment was $79 at Lowe’s)

    A couple of suggestions.
    Paint the door and the braces prior to installing the braces.
    Paint both side of the braces otherwise the plywood will weather from rain or snow.
    Put the braces on the screen side of the door and you won't have a place for insects and spiders to live.

    Rotted old piece of garbage plywood you drain your oil on.....sloppily hacked up on your new screen door - Hilarious! Best laugh I've had in weeks. The corner bracing concept itself works tho

    They used these screen doors quite a bit in the old days, and another method of squaring was to use a turnbuckle and wire so they could kind of tweak it if things got a little weak. I'm needing a screen door like this, but your method seems to be a bit easier and a lot cheaper to fix a door.

      Hi, I think the wire is a good idea too, but I already had the plywood so I went that route. Thanks!

    Up in Maine we call this a “thwacker” because of that sound! Anyway I bought one with 5 ?’s (posts on the bottom half). The wood is fj = finger joint. I did stain it the day after install but we got some huge rains. Needless to say the thing has expanded and will not shut. Do I have to call the carpenter back or is there a way for me to adjust hinges?

    Ha! I see the door listed online:$25! I am tempted too to buy one. In addition to the gussets you added, i'm thinking about adding some kind of ramp or block to the door jamb that will support the door when it's closed. This will lessen the chance of sagging.
    *We cheap bastards gotta make this $25 door work, godamnit!*

    • @jenniesgarage
      @jenniesgarage  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Cooll Asice Yeah, even though it's junk, that price is too cheap to pass up. Your idea of supporting the door on the non-hinge side when closed is an excellent one, it would probably greatly extend to life of the door.

    Hmm nice repair :-))
    I would say things like lift the top angle so the corner scrapes the top of the frame, it will still droop slightly and take longer to scrape on the floor.
    But we dont have screen doors in the uk so ill take it all back ha ha :-))
    I think sheet steel "L" plates would have worked as well, but we dont all have such things sitting around to use do we :-)

    • @jenniesgarage
      @jenniesgarage  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the weather is quite bloody cold at times lol, but at the moment we are having a odd heatwave, rather nice for a change :-))
      The uk tends to be rather dull/cold/chilly/rain so i think most bugs dont enjoy that, i dont blame them lol.
      Typical bugs are daddylonglegs/flys/moths/bees/wasps, but not many unless you leave a window open at night with the light on ha ha.

    I wonder how he painted the sides of the corner braces facing the screen. Should have done it before installing. At least on the inaccessible sides, leaving bare wood for glue.

  • @bbi1965
    @bbi1965 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I got that exact screen door. After painting the reinforcements and affixing them according to your directions, I mounted the door. Unfortunately, the door warped outward on the top, the opposite side of the hinges, leaving a gap. Now, I either have to attach a metal strip to the outside edge of it of buy an aluminum screen door to replace it. I'm seeing that, sooner or later, these cheap thin wood screen doors will fail without additional support.

    • @jenniesgarage
      @jenniesgarage  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Brad Iverson It's almost embarrassing that they sell them. After I did all this, a few months later the screen started coming loose!

    • @freewaybaby
      @freewaybaby 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jennies Garage .... Everything they sell is crap! When my dad came to town to visit, he put one of these on my back door (about 10 years ago) and bought me a quart of paint to paint it after he left.... I could see the time painting it would be wasted as it was falling apart within a day! I'm thinking about buying another one and reinforcing it before it goes up, since I don't have wood-working tools (to build one from scratch), other than hand saws, etc. Maybe it won't warp too soon!

    I am making my door from 2X4's ripped in half. It made a good strong outer frame. I have a blood hound that is going to want to sit & watch out the door so I needed to commit to a fence~screen door. LOLOL So I used 1/2 " hardware cloth on it along with the screening, just in case he saw a rabbit out the door. Now all I have to do is figure a way to lock it securely so he can't push the whole thing open. What do you think 2-3 hook & eye locks? Maybe electrify the whole screen. LOLOL Just kidding.

    I guess if the customer just wanted any cheap door that’s ok. They were acceptable in small town country homes or a backyard shed. Actually, back in the day folk made their own with much better quality lumber than we get today. I have one myself, but I did it intentionally because I was adding scroll work elements to it to dress it up. And yes it was all painted beforehand! Just a tip.
