Would love to see more family trips like this one! There’s not a lot of content like that on TH-cam and it’s great to see the dos and don’t of bikepacking with a toddler.

Im living in the Netherlands ...bikers country. Very nice of you guys to get into the wilderness and just bike your dreams
I'm 57 y old and my wife 59 next trip with the e-bikes is from Switzerland to the North Sea at hook of Holland. 1300km so we go by train to the origin of the river Rhein. Like you said my dad and mum dit took me for camping too

You are not wrong getting the kids out early. We had both our kids camping in tents in the PNW rain when they were only months old. Now at 21 and 25, they have their own camping gear and go camping with their buddies, girlfriend/boyfriend and us all the time.
My wife and I have been through the tenting phase, toy hauler/ATV phase, slide in truck camper/boat phase, Tacoma/off road trailer-RTT/kayak phase, and now at 50 yrs old, we are looking to get into mountain biking as another option to go with our Tacoma/off road trailer-RTT adventures.

So when I have my old Burly on I switch out to a 28 tooth chain ring (on an Eagle GX) I normally run a 32 tooth. It really helps, I find i run a bit more in the middle of the cassette so the chain line is better. Which I found after 7-8+ hours on a bike that little bit better chain line does make it less tireing, you would not think so but hauling 60 or 70 lbs of gear every little bit helps. it really helps reduce the amount of hike-a-bike when it gets steep.

I bet it'll have the "ankle weights" affect on your riding...next ride you do without the trailer you'll be all zoom zoom. haha.
LOVE that you guys do what you do! Lil Dusty is going to have so many amazing life experiences and lessons. I've been wanting to do a bikepacking ride (just an overnighter like this the first couple times). Thanks for putting this together!
Also, I'm slightly embarrassed to admit I have a trailer similar to that....for my DOGS 🤣 Have yet to use it but maybe one day I'll do a video on that and hope they don't flip it

A trailer can reduce stress on spokes and hubs and that makes breaking a spoke less likely. One spoke out soon leads to other spokes breaking. Three gone can make a wheel warp and seize in the frame.

I towed my daughter in a similar trailer for a few thousand miles when she was that young, and she loved it too. We did days out and full holidays in the UK and around the Atlantic coastal regions in France. For the winter, we bought her a short sleeping bag (pink - with the word Princess on it - well, you have to don't you?) and she would curl up inside and sleep. If I had £1 for every time someone saw her shock of blonde hair peeking out of that sleeping bag and said "Ah"...

  • @Poppageno

I have adult kids now, but one thing I learned was rest early, rest often. It helps both the attention span and your energy level. I pulled a BOB YAK down half of the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route in segments. What I found was when going slow the trailer tends to go downslope. Walking it down a side hill the trailer would try to pass me. Thusly one needs to keep the bike speed up so the trailer is pulled by the bike, not gravity. Steve did this in the video on the rocky section. I do have say the trailer can be the tail wagging the dog on sand or fesh fesh. That caused a big crash for me with hidden mud ruts under the fesh fesh. Good on ya for taking the trip!

E-bikes are amazing for this type of riding-it really helps when your pulling extra weight. And you still can get some exercise and not get too exhausted going up those hills. Plus you have a way to charge your phones and such. Also-get a tire guard- it’s not for you it’s for her in the back-less stuff coming up

Hello, nice video! I'm riding mtb trailers for over 20 years. My advice for transporting bigger stuff off road is use a single wheel trailer that is mounted in the seat tube. You 've got much less that tip over feeling and used with a fully the suspension stays fully active.

  • @insaynbcr
    @insaynbcr 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Those trailers are screaming for a new invention. Electric brakes! Maybe a parallel attached lever to the rear brakes, lithium battery on the trailer itself. Not sure if cable, hydro or electric pinch brakes the way to go. Quick disconnect between both the bike and trailer.

Concerning the Coho CX steering/tilting your bike, it might be worth experimenting with where in the trailer you load the weight to balance the ride out. I know some folks say to load as much weight as possible over the axle, but this actually goes against everything I've ever known and learnt about on-highway towing. The rule of thumb is that at least 60% of the load should be forward on the tongue or yoke. Here are a couple of videos demonstrating this principle:
    th-cam.com/video/6mW_gzdh6to/w-d-xo.html
    th-cam.com/video/w9Dgxe584Ss/w-d-xo.html
Also, weight as low as possible would make sense lowering the 'centre of gravity' and 'righting moment' effects the trailer is imposing on the bike.
Having said all of this, I honestly have no idea if this business would even come into play on the comparatively lightweight and low loads involved with bike trailers, but it could, and therefore it might be worth playing around with it a bit. To simplify, I would try a run where I put all items of heavier weight entirely forward and at the bottom, and then work my way up and back with lighter and lighter pieces.
I haven't been able to try this with a Coho XC yet because I don't yet have one, but one is on the way for a 1000km mountain rail-trail tour I'm taking this summer so I'll be able to mess around with opposite extremes and see how it feels.

I just discovered your channel as my husband just got me hooked on mountain biking. We started my my son on the trailer and he loved it but wouldn’t last too long we would take breaks but then once we took the first brake he would want a lot more brakes and it would take us a while to finish a trail. We recently got the shotgun seat and I was pleasantly surprised how much he enjoyed it. We would give him a brake and he would not want to get off and would cry for us to put him back. He actually thinks he’s the one riding it’s so cute. Of course we are super cautious and go slower than normal and take our time to make sure we don’t ruin the experience for him. Maybe give it a try for little Dusty. Also my bike is in no way equipped to handle the trails we currently do, do you have any recommendations on a good starter bike that is reasonably price I’m not ready to fully invest in the sport yet until I do it a little longer but definitely need something better than my TREK dual sport 2 😂 but hey it holds up!

Okay. I don't want to be a wet blanket (and just saying that lets you know that I'm going to be a wet blanket!), so please forgive me. Little Dusty is so adorable! I wish I had this kind of equipment when my kids were young. But I was watching Tess' rear tire, and it tracks ever so slightly to the right of center on that trailer. So is it possible to make some sort of shield, some sort of eye protection for Little Dusty? You can see the rear tire kicking up dust that goes right through the mesh. If her eyeball were to get scratched, the three of you would be in for a good two days of misery. Worse, if she rubs her eyes after they are already irritated.
