Flexwing Microlight Vlog - Flying solo on my PeaBee Episode 8

- I've finally flown solo. This is the video you have been waiting for. My solo flight on my PeaBee. I'm so pleased I had all the training from Jim as this just felt just like a lighter version of the aircraft I have been learning on. I would encourage anyone going down this route to get flight instruction. I can be flown with out, but as a pilot you don't know what you don't know unless you have been taught.
Having flown a Paramotor for years, I thought I would try to learn how to fly a flexwing Nanolight PeaBee, it's like nothing else I have flown before. Join me on my Paramotor to Peabee conversion. It might seem simple but flying a flexwing, after having flown Stick and rudder aircraft for so long was not an easy experience and I'm glad I'm getting training.
Anthony Vella and Paul Mockford have been helping in the background and I couldn't have achieved these videos without there advice and guidance.

I was grinning like a Cheshire cat after the flight. Thank you all for following my journey. I'm still smiling inside and can't wait to fly again..once the weather settles down a bit.
Awesome. Not only your first microlight solo, but flying it in your own aircraft.
Hi Simon, that feels like an age ago now. I'm guessing you are working through previous content, 😁 thank yu for supporting the channel.
Congratulations on flying solo, it's an incredible feeling, may God always bless you.
This feels L ke an eternity ago. I now have the privilege of sending other people solo now.
You are a flight instructor@@GolfFoxtrot22
Yes.
“I’m happy with that”. And so you should be, you finally nailed the landing on the Pee Bee 🐝 Well done Giles 👍😎
Its been a brilliant journey, one that is only just beginning.
This has been probably one of the best videos to show my passion for flying. I hope my nerves and excitement comes across.
Well done I love to hear the back wheels screech on that last landing ❤
In all this time., I never noticed that noise. Thank you for pointing it out.
Hi Giles, thanks for your videos, I’ve watched them all once when I started my training here in the US. They are terrific and Jim seems like a great instructor, i definitely learned things from them because when I was doing my training last year I would be flying and thinking hey…. I already learned that from Giles and Jim.
So have you ever thought of posting your complete videos instead of just the shorter edited versions, I am sure there is so much more information in them, and to be honest they are the best instruction videos out there. I just find them to be a great supplement to my training.
I have had to take a year off since my solo due to a shoulder injury and am going to finish my training in a month and started rewatching your videos and those by Paul Hamilton too. I am sure I’m not the only one that would love to see your complete training videos.
Hi Greg, sorry for the delay in responding. Firstly I hope your shoulder injury is getting better. I have seriously thought about making some longer ones/ training videos and I have to admit I'm really apprehensive as training should be with an instructor. I like the journey element of getting it right and wrong, the highs and lows of learning to fly. I like your suggestion about making the videos longer, I'll have to see if I still have the original footage to have another go, good idea :). Don't be afraid to let me know how you are doing with your flying training in any of the videos, it will be great to know how you are getting on.
'I'm flying guys' - absolutely brilliant Giles.
Thank you. It was that moment that realised what was happening. With all the run ups, checks and processes being second nature, I just had that moment of clarity.
Super Fantastic. You did it. I knew you would. It won't take long before man and machine form a firm bond and you'll have all controls well dialed in. I like the air speed indicator and also the break system. Burn Rubber:))
Merry Christmas and look forward to catching up in the new year.
Sandy
Sandy, yes, I liked the brake system as well. Yes, you're right, I just need more flying time to get dialed in. Looking forward to the new year and some more flying time with the associated better weather.
What a brilliant series. Anyone thinking of learning to fly a flexwing will take inspiration from your videos.
I trained with Jim too. He comes over as the great bloke he is.
In fact, you've inspired me to dust off the gear and get airborne again - thanks!!!
Wow, I hope you do get back in the air. Jim has really helped me develop as a pilot and I'm so enjoying my flying, What did you used to fly and will be flying again?
@@GolfFoxtrot22 I'm an old fart based in mid Devon. Used to fly flexwing and 3 axis microlights till 18 years ago. Brief dalliance with paramotor trikes (shelved) which has left me with a brand new Dudek Universal wing and brand new Simonini engine and prop! Your vlogs have inspired me towards flexwing again; I'm probably too heavy for a Peabee. Would love a chat some time to ask some questions!! All the best, Richard.
Congratulations Giles! I did catch me off-guard on the first flight in the video when you turned the camera on yourself as your Peabee took off.
Watched the 1st 8 and I'm thinking of doing that journey. Really enjoyed your lessons. Your instructor was excellent. I'm fortunate to live in central Florida so you could fly almost every day, all year round. And Larry Mednick and his school is about an hour's drive from me. Sooo tempting!!
Hi Robert, welcome to the channel and I hope you enjoyed them. It's sounds almost idea for were you are regarding the weather. Life is too short, and I hope you enjoy learning to fly flexwings.
He's done it! Right, see you in about 12 months! lol
Well done sir, enjoyable info-filled series.
You'll see me sooner than you think.....Reflex flight has to be done.
Only one think to say awesome ......love it .......... well done ........... hope to see you fly the Pee Bee in to windland next year giles , love watching all your journey to this point .
Wayne, its been an amazing journey so far, with the next journey starting now. I'll probably be driving it there, but I do want to fly it from Winglands.
Thanks for taking me along for the jouney i had a similar experiance when i went from a air creation tanarg to my redback trike (although mine was a twin seater)
I still remember the day i went solo i revised all the things that my cfi would say
My trike you could just plop down unlike the tanarg that required you to stall the wing while hovering just above the ground
Welcome to aircraft ownership i actually bought my airborne redback before i went for my first test flight
There is nothing like getting good weather with no one to contest the aircraft (eg renting)
Hi Zwebx, its been a wonderful journey since then and I can't believe its been 4 years since this happened. I've rented aircraft when I had my PPL back in 1996 and was frustrated with not always getting the aircraft when the weather was good. I've never flown a Tanarg but I've heard some interesting stories from those that have flown them. ;)
Well done Giles!! This is a really great series, perfect revision for anyone with low hours (ME!).BRILLIANT!!!
Peter, thank you. I kind of wanted them as a very simple ( not a teaching) reference series. They have helped me with my post flight analysis, and this has been very helpful. I hope they help you as well.
In another part of the UK , my nppl-m instructor said he reckons the same for me, so when the weathers good I will take my snake up, great info from your instructor, I have listened hard ! all the best. happy flying.
Wow, let me know how it goes. I was really struggling with the weather, considering I started in July. I managed to get the last few flights in, in a very short space. This flight video has been held back, but I hope its been useful. They have certainly helped me after each flight.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 There's you and another guy I follow, you have both gone sub 70 solo within a week of eachother on here, I started flying in Jan and have around 40 hrs, the last 10 incorperating many touch n go's etc, Im close, but like you, its the getting the rounding out or flaring to perfection and every landing is different, so its practice practice practice. Lets hope for some clear days with low winds, thanks. ;-)

@@GolfFoxtrot22 Hey there, I'm Nige btw and fly out of Sutton Meadow and it was Trev Lee . th-cam.com/video/hp5dOMg70Iw/w-d-xo.html
As you said 'absolutely bloody brilliant', well done Giles 👍👍
Trots69. Thank you. I feel one journey has ended and a new one is beginning.
Wonderful! 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽 Really exciting and I enjoyed that - you done real good Giles!! Wishing you plenty more 🍺🐝🍺🐝🍺🐝🍺
Dave, I feel I can join you now in the skies. I'm glad toy enjoyed the videos. Although they have been hard work to make and edit, Ive enjoyed putting them together so others can follow the journey. I just need to get a bit more dialed in to the pitch control. I think its just time now.
Nice one Giles
Trev, thank you. I think 'our' learning journey has only just begun.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Most definately Giles. We need some kind weather now!!
Always good to finish with an “I’m happy with that”. 👍
I like to finish on a good note, then I'm not puzzled or frustrated before the next flight.
Fantastic Giles, chuffed for you! Loved the P2P series, hope you enjoy the rest over Christmas.
Dan, thanks. Yes a little rest from editing is needed.
Wonderful job Giles!! Jim is a great instructor. Congratulations on your PeaBee solo. Also big thumbs up for your landing decisions and ending the day with a sweet landing. 👏😎
Thank you Doug, Jim has helped me so much. I'm glad I got the feel by the last landing. There is no suspension so you have to get it 'just' right. Grass fields will make it easier.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 You're welcome. I understand, light is right thus no suspension. A grass strip will be nice. Look forward to your flights in the new year.
Well done. I've qualified for paramotor, now I want to fly a microlight
Have you seen my other series, it might give you a flavour of going microlight.
I forgot to say congratulations on completing your paramotor training.
Brilliant, well done Giles. I have followed your journey and enjoyed every part of it nearly as much as you have. See that you have matched the colours of your flying suit with your aircraft. Very colour coordinated. Look forward to more flying adventures in 2020.
Glyn, I still smile when I think of those first flights. The flying suit was actually purchased a few years ago. Maybe someone knew the way I would end up. bring on 2020!!
Great Vlog, great to see your whole journey to flying solo in your PeaBea. Bet our chuffed as nuts. Well done to you and well done to Jim. Now the next journey begins.
Paul, thank you. As you said.. I can now start my next journey, becoming a better pilot. Its been fantastic.
Congratulations! Nice one Giles. Wishing you and your PeaBee many happy hours flying in 2020.
Paul, thank you. I hope 2020 gives us better weather then the latter part of 2019. I can't wait to get more time on the PeaBee.
Great series and top instructor. Well done.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. He clearly set me on a good path for what I am doing now. Wonderful mentor as well.
Brilliant Giles! Great journey.
Jason Bingham
Thank you Jason. Lets hope 2020 has some better weather.
can't watch with sound atm ( at work) but ...YEAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!! WOOOOOOOO!!!!! Well done brother!!
Nooooo, no sound, I've added emotional music and everything.....big screen and speakers on later Leo.
Golf Foxtrot 22 definitely!! When I get home!

Awesome - that video has cost me £12K + ish. Well done, and an excellent journey right from the start. As you said - 'Now I need to fly'. Will enjoy all the others and hope to see it at the next fly-in.
Tony, do you really want me to say I'm sorry. You were going to do it anyway....Yes see you at the next fly-in, I'll be bringing both Paramotor and Peabee.
They do look amazing Tony. Maybe Santa will feel flush this year?
Nice job. Thanks for taking us along! Congrats!
Thank you. I'm sure there will be more fun adventures to come.
Congratulations. Watched many of your videos. This one was quite enjoyable.
Thank you, feels like a lifetime ago now.
Well done Giles I'm thinking of buying one in the future work hard play harder!
Leigh, wow, I thought you were firmly in the Paramotor camp.
Yet another most enjoyable video GILES, I don't think I'll be swapping my Quik for a Peabee though!
I can see the joy of a Quik but I can't afford one or have access to storage. I was happy to learn of one though.
Well done Giles. Well deserved rest of editing for Crimbo. See you in the new year buddy
Alan, thank you. Yes a nice little rest. Hopefully some flyable weather to get some more footage as well. See you and Oscar at the Bore hopefully.
We will be there. Fingers crossed for flyable weather
I have been watching all your training and i kind of feel the happiness like you do. I wish you all the best with your new flying adventure.
John, thank you. Its been an amazing experience so far, and I want to make sure I keep developing my skills further. Hopefully more videos in the new year..
Golf Foxtrot 22 keep posting 👍
John, I will. I want to redo all the lessons on my own now. This will help me get dialled in to the PeaBee.
Golf Foxtrot 22 nice I like that, what do you think about the vitorazi 25 HP ? I’m 160 pounds should that be enough power?
@@hans2637 I'm heavier than you are (78kgs 172lbs), Jim is 95 kgs (209lbs) and it climbs so quickly. I was climbing out and most of the time i was easing off the power and pulling the bar in. I have the Moster Silent on the PeaBee and the Moster Plus on My Paramotor, both very powerful. The PeaBee feels more powerful as it's turning a 140cm prop.
Well done Giles - that's a lovely film...great stuff!
I'm trying to not make my paramotor jealous.
Well done sir, looking forward to your adventures in the new year. Thankyou for sharing too. Wishing you and your family all the best over the Christmas period.
Michael, thank you for following. Same Christmas wishes to your family as well. Onwards and upwards in 2020.
Giles, great job! I am on a similar journey going from paramotors to trikes. Looking forward to my solo...
It's an amazing feel. Drop me a message some how when you have done it.
Great to watch your journey. Safe flying
Thanks for watching. This was nearly a year ago, give or take a couple of weeks. My NPPL journey is my next step and has only really been possible because of the lessons that I received from Jim.
Looks amazing Giles......wish list.....
Roy, this has been my dream come true.
The concentration on your face trying to land that. I think you done really well considering how different it is to the other one you were training in. Have a great christmas. And stay safe see you next year 😁👍🏻
Hi Harry, yes, it was the look of 'please don't balls this up'. It didn't feel too different, just the loss of weight made a difference to the landing characteristics. I need to land faster. Have a good Christmas and see you at the Bore in 2020 is you are going.
Glad I found this site very enjoyable al
I'm glad that they are helpful.
Hi bud. I really love the headcam view. Would be good if you could do a full lenth vid of just that so i can put my POV headset on and really feel like I'm there. See you in the circuit.....eventually
Thank you for the feedback. I get a lot of comments saying to makes them feel sick, as my head is always moving. I know what you mean, I'd almost have to make an uncut head channel...:)..notnsure who you are to say hello to in the circuit, but I'm sure you would poke me and say hello.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 :-) I guess I'll just have to go flying more. I can't wait for the fields to dry out....or Little staughton airfield giving me permission to user their hard surface.
well done on your progress
congratulations, and what a great aircraft too!
Thank you. i'm so pleased with my PeaBee. It just felt right. Flylight have a well proven design with a pedigree of heritage.
Awesome journey Giles well done...
Philip, thank you for following. More to come next year I'm sure.
Great video...love seeing you finally get to fly your machine. How will you bring the bar back? Will this be accomplished by moving the hang point on the glider's keel, just a bit forward? Anyway, you did a great job, thanks for bringing us along. It'll be interesting hearing more about how it flies...I have an Aeros ANT on order so in a couple of months I'll be doing what you're currently doing. Thanks.
The wing is already at the forward trim point, so for the time being I'll have to just apply a little rearward pressure (its not much really). I hear there might be some modifications for trimming but we'll have to see what comes out of the Flylight skunkworks.
great vids well done ...
Thank you. I hope they help others in all forms of flying.
Nice one Giles! Nice edit! Looked fun!🤙
It was, even though I had a concentration face.
Well done Giles , nailed that final landing 👍🏼
Thank you. the PeaBee is just a little bit different in pitch than the Explorer, I just need to be confident to flare lower. Loving the new way to fly.
Pick my wing up next week and should be solo myself early in the New Year - weather allowing !
Fantastic P2P series. Congratulations on your solo flight. Looking forward to more vidz. What engine do you have there?
thank you. I have the MY19 Moster Silent. The idle was a little low but I love the fact it will stop with the prop not turning so i can thermal soar in the summer months.
Just finished watching, great achievement Giles. Well done. Make sure to post more videos of your new fangled flying machine...and a happy Xmas :-)
Gunter, don't worry, I'm already working on camera mounts and a 360 camera. Have a Happy Christmas also.
Brill job, Giles!👍
Nicholas, have fun in yours.
Absolutely loving this series Thank you . (I'm going thro similar Paramotor to sub70 journey just now, so this is ACE). Quick question: where is this airfield ? its clearly not dunkerswell and looks like a disused runway/storage (with the tyres pilled up on approach :-) )
Hi Mark, Darley Moor airfield. If you look back through a lot of my content, it appears frequently. Lovely area to fly. I hope the videos help. Also I did video my own Sub70 journey which should be in one of my play lists, if that helps as well
Great video ! Andres From Santiago, Chile
Hello Andre's, there is plenty more videos to keep you entertained. Thanks for watching.
I had one didn’t like it went back to paramotor too much messing about but that is my opinion that looks really well 👍
I can see where you are coming from. Thats why I'm still going to paramotor, horses for courses. Carrying big loads on my paramotor, on nil wind days is no fun. But then I can fly on windier day with the paramotor. Thank you for watching.
Congrats!
Thank you. It's the beginning of a new journey.
Congratulations mate, it’s been awesome watching you from the beginning to the end of this journey, now the real fun starts, can’t wait to see a sat on this at the next PMC 😉 also I dunno how you have the time to stay so consistent even through winter with these videos, well done bud and have a merry Christmas 👍x
Oscar, thank you. It's been such a fun journey, I let you know one day. Probably at the next fly in. You and Alan have a great Christmas as well.
Going back through these older VLOGs Giles and really enjoying the journey. Not sure whether it's covered else where but with alternative training routes it would be useful to know the make up of your own journey. Like you I've had a PPL(A) so looking at whether I should get good initial instruction to solo standard or do full NPPL.
I think we all have our own experience to bring to the flying journey. The lessons with Jim were great for me flying Sub70, the extra lessons with Mark, Terry and Shelley just took me to a higher standard for the NPPL. If I had now experience, I think the NPPL restricted licence would be a really good foundation. I hope that helps.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 thanks for taking the time to respond Giles, really useful.
Patrick, not a problem, you took the time to write, it's only courtesy to respond.
Yay - Well done Giles !
Ben, thank you. I'm still chuffed to bits to be flying my own aircraft.
Not watched it yet, but will do later. 🥳
Brilliant job. Now get out there and really learn your PeaBee. Remember the most important thing and smile. This stuff is supposed to be fun...
Haha, yes, I know it's meant to be fun. Did you not see me smiling in the intro. I can't wait to get back out and fly again. Just need a little bit of good weather now.
Fantastic
I hope Chloe liked it as well.
Wahaaaaaaay.......you popped your PeaBee cherry :O)
Happy Holidays.
Indeed I have. Hopefully 2020 will give more flyable weather. I can't wait to get back in the air now.
nice one
Going solo is the best feeling in the world.
Only just seen these vids great stuff😁question please what airfield is this please ?
Hello Alwyn, and welcome to the channel. This is a private disused airfield called Upottery east of Dunkeswell. Its quite famous as it's where the 101th Airborne launched out of. I hope that helps. The disused airfield is heavily used by non flying as well as other flying activities.
Hi Giles, do you rotate (pitch up) when your pitot indicates a certain airspeed? And if so, what speed is that? Thanks for the videos and I wish I lived in the UK so I could train there to fly a Sub 70.
Hi Tom, assuming a normal take off (not short field etc), the bar starts to come forward at I'm gaining airspeed, and keep feeding the bar forward until the nose lifts off, then it's smoothly back to the hands off trim position. The trike would lift off eventually but the speed would be very high and unsafe to do so, also the take off run would be very long. I hope that helps. I hope you've enjoyed the content up till now?
Nice
What power of engine?
Meaurements of propeller and wing?
Thank you. I think I mention it in the video, it's 25 horse power. It's the Moster 185 Silent engine, it turning a 140 propeller. The wing is a Fox 13 T made by Aeros.
Is that verticle tube with the red disc an air speed indicator?
Yes it is the ASI. From memory, I think it's called a Hall ASI.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 thank you.
Giles out of interest , what instruments are you carrying , I saw the Hall airspeed meter and the compass , but did I spy another one on your Peabee ?
Yes, I have a Silva Compass on the lower beam. I also have a Tach and Cht. I'm trying to find the best plact for the Hall ASI, Ben Ashman suggested it needs to be higher up but then its not convenient to see. A little thing to sort. Is that what you were referring to?
Yes must be the tach and Cht monitor , what make is it Giles ?
@@davidnewbrook8628 just the TTO ones. Reliable and simple.
Are they better then the trike parameters? For example Luna trike? And do you need a hanger or airfield to use this?
Not better than paramotors, just different. One compliments the other. You can operate away from airfields but they doo need a good surface to operate from. Have a look for my 2020 Bore Chasers video and you'll see what they can operate from.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Thank you, ill take a look :)
