    Whether it's not being able to find a particular type makeup because they simply don't make your shade, looking out at a sea of white faces at a magazine rack, or getting into an argument about "Good Hair", white beauty standards are all around us. What's crazy is that if you fit the ideal you may not even notice how they affect people of color every day. Don't believe us? Watch the episode to find out.

    I live in Mexico and yeah, there are mexicans of all shapes and skin colors, but in most ads they use pictures of either white people or really light skinned mexicans. Not to mention all the ads & media coming feom USA
    And I've also seen it with families here that one of their children will make comments about how their sibling is more darked skinned as if it's something bad. People selling stuff on markets and such also call potential costumers (specially women) "blondie" because they consider it polite to call u that... it's weird.

    if u don't get this video then do your research. There is a white/European beauty standard that's has been emboded in cultures all over the world. For example, a black persons hair was seen as unruly n unfit so a lot of slaves had their hair covered or cut off. Overtime this changed to people straightening their hair to become that beauty standard. Stuff like cornrows, kinky Afos, etc was seen as unruly, unfit n unprofessional. There's more to the story behind European/white beauty standards than what I just said. it's been emboded in our culture n u can see it everywhere.

      It's bullshit. We can't be equal in every way possible. White people and black people are NEVER going to be equally beautiful. It just doesn't work like that. Beauty isn't decided by society, it's decided by human nature.
      Black people aren't ugly.
      White people are just really good looking and make black people look "ugly" by comparison.
      It's like comparing an average looking girl to a supermodel. The average looking girl isn't ugly, she just isn't as good looking as the supermodel.
      There are writings and records from native peoples after their first encounters with white people. All of them talk about how beautiful white people are. One South American culture simply called white people "the beautiful people". Other native cultures believed white people to be gods or spirits. Women in Asian cultures bleach their skin, get double eye lid surgery, dye their hair and even wear colored contact lenses to look more white. Just look at how white the girls in K-pop groups look.
      African Barbary pirates and slavers used to specifically target white women from Northern and Western Europe and sell them into slavery because African men wanted white women as wives and sex slaves because they thought that white women were more beautiful than African women.
      See? Believing that white people are exceptionally attractive isn't something invented by a "racist society", it's literally ALWAYS been that way.
      Not everything can be equal. Each race evolved to fit its environment, not to look as equally beautiful as other races. It just so happens that the environment that white people evolved to fit in resulted in them evolving exceptionally attactive traits (white skin, colored eyes, colored hair, narrow nose, wavy hair, etc).
      There are many races on Earth so of course some races are going to be more aesthetically appealing than other races. Even within the white race, there are ethnic groups that are more attractive than other ethnic groups even though they're all white. For example, Slavic girls are particularly extremely beautiful.

  • @Lo96Ve
    @Lo96Ve 8 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    I normally don't comment on these things. But are y'all do real. This is a video that was needed and I am sorry for those of you who were offended but it's true. Never once did they bash white girls nor did they ever say anything about it being wrong that you are white or did they blame. They blame the culture for their no acceptance of women of color being beautiful or that products should know that there is more colors in the world than a paler skin tone. I think what they did is beautiful, because they not only stood up for the culture but for their own unique individual beauty. Whether it was their hairs, their eyes, noses and skin tone. This is what our world needs to embrace everyone is beautiful and needs to start with us. Google what they Google and be upset that they don't show enough individual and unique looks! Look at the products sold today and be bothered. Wake up and notice that our culture is trying to put us all in a box and clone us and we need to fight it together!

    You can scream racism all you want when people don't find you attractive. That isn't going to make people find you attractive. If anything, it will make you look even less attractive.
    You can't just cheat attractiveness by blaming your unattractiveness on racism.
    You could, however, and this is my personal method, make up for lack of looks with a charming and likeable personality. Not that I'm very good at that either, but it works a lot better than screaming racism when people just don't find you attractive.

    Darker skinned people are trying to get lighter while white people are trying to get darker. I don't think white is the beauty standard right now, the beauty standard is something in between.

    • @Fortheloveofcoils
      @Fortheloveofcoils 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I see what you're saying it is in between which is why in today's society, most are infatuated with biracial women who the "in between color" its the color many dark skins that use skin whitening to look like and white that tan their skin aim to look like. But no white person that tans is trying to look like a dark skin I can tell you that. So dark skins are the ones that are most ridiculed and seen as "lower class" been that way since the Chaste system was created. Dont know what it is? Look it up. Its still like this today bt thankfully more darker skin black women are embracing their skin tone and more black women in general are accepting those features that were always seen as "unattractive".

    • @ChenelleAvallone
      @ChenelleAvallone 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No white is still the beauty standard because if a black person was to lighten their skin and white girl darken hers, the white girl would still be considerd more beautiful because she is white. Then her nose and lips will come into play. The thing about the white beauty standard is that its not so much about actual beauty, but just the result of colonisation

    • @jayak8217
      @jayak8217 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      My opinion on this matter has evolved since I posted this. It's cliche but beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. Every skin colour and feature can be beautiful. We should all just learn to be happy with what we've got because as long as you're healthy and happy with yourself, tons of people will find you attractive.

    • @Fortheloveofcoils
      @Fortheloveofcoils 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No its not ***** I was just studying about it and wrote a paper about it this past semester for class. African blacks were at the very bottom(not surprising), half black and natives were next, natives were next, lighter skin natives/spaniards were next, then the spaniards descent was up top (white). Nope very true still like this today so nope it was around the caribbean in DR, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Guatamala and all the other hispanic countries/islands.

    • @Fortheloveofcoils
      @Fortheloveofcoils 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The whole purpose of mixing was to "better the race" to white spaniards and even many white american slave owners. The lighter was always better to them. Many of the mixed children also could pass as white and had better chances than dark skin fully black people. You can believe what you want but the "caste system" was not imaginary it was real and still affects a lot of blacks(whether AA, Caribbean and even darker shade women in Asia. And because of that caste system created by white europeans, it as adopted into many cultures like Asia, Caribbean, Central America, South America and lastly America. Even the media for years follows that caste system putting into young black minds that skin whitening will make them prettier and better off and wealthier cuz thats what it was all about and to make the white race seem like the superior race. THANK GOD many black women are embracing more of their dark skin and natural hair,

      First of all Africa is a continent not a country. If you're going to treat the most diverse continent on the planet as a monolith you don't need to be in this discussion. Secondly, the difference is America is not a white country. Minorities make up 50% of the population and growing therefore they need to be accepted as the norm and not be disadvantaged in their own country. Hope that answers your ridiculous question!!

We can't fix the problems in our society if no one is willing to talk about and acknowledge them and it's sad that so many people like to call it "white hate" or some other nonsense when people speak out about the injustices in our society. I for one am very glad for these videos they've made me so much more aware of things so many of us do or say without realizing how much harder they make it for minority groups.

But there is something wrong when you tell poc that they aren't good enough because they're not a white person. The western world caters mostly to white beauty and tends under represent people of color. The representation you see on tv and in the stores is not even close to the actually percentage and distribution of people across the western world.
      All they are saying in this video is that people of color should be treated with respect, represented fairly, and catered to with beauty products that actually enhance their natural beauty instead of trying to make them look more Caucasian

      +ThereWolf if she moved to Nigeria she would see the same white beauty standards, people in Nigeria in fact have their lips tattooed pink and bleach their skin for this reason. I can't see how ppl don't understand. No one is saying do not market white as beautiful but when you are pushing this image so hard that it is warping the view of other races of themselves it is an issue. If you go to India, Vietnam, Cambodia, Ghana, Pakistan, literally anywhere you will see a push that lighter skin is more beautiful, that straighter hair is more beautiful, if you were a person of color you would understand exactly where this video is coming from. When you get told that you shouldn't play too long outside as a child because you will become too dark you may write it off as nonsense, but when you also turn on the tv and all the beautiful woman are white and all your Barbies are white and all the models in the magazines are white, you start to believe it.

      +kate oogle works off of algorithms determining which images and other search results are shown first based on what is clicked on the most. There is no one person sitting down deciding which results show up at the top of the page. So all of the light skinned women showing up at the top of search results is because EVERYONE clicks on those most often. White people didn't get together and be like okay now everyone click on these images over and over so they appear at the top. If they're at the top it means people of ALL races click on them most often......does that mean people of other races who think those women are pretty and click on the image to admire them are perpetuating white beauty standards? Don't blame Google for being racist because the only people to blame for those search results are people of all colors clicking on them

    • @dianthus__
      @dianthus__ 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Whitney Dahlin ?? when did i "blame google for being racist"? i understand how google works. you're missing the point. the problem is that white european women are held up as the highest beauty standard, which is incredibly harmful for girls who don't look anything like that. the google results are one easily accessible example of how pervasive this idea is, which is why they were used in this video.

    • @WhitneyDahlin
      @WhitneyDahlin 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +kate the Google results mean nothing just that people all over the world click on those images the most often. It isn't showing how pervasive white beauty standards are. When men or women are searching for beautiful women to look at they click on what they personally feel is beautiful or what they are sexually attracted to. It has nothing to do with white beauty being forced upon them or fed to them by the media and that's why they find white people attractive. They can't help what they find sexually attractive or beautiful or not attractive and ugly It's instinct. Otherwise gay people are choosing to be gay if you believe people peoples sexuality is influenced by the media or any other outside force. People don't blame the media or any other outside force for making for making them attracted to the same sex. They were born attracted to the same sex. The same concept applies here. You can't help who you're attracted to that doesn't make you racist.

      Well, a lot of people are racially defensive and have a hard time tolerating or understanding other points of view. It's easier to close their eyes, sing kumbaya, and pretend everything is perfect. Anyone who doesn't play along is met with hostility. I'll admit that some people have some valid points, but most don't know what they're talking about. Being dismissive is a passive way to tell everyone to basically stop bitching and forget history because it makes them feel uncomfortable. In shorter terms, ignorance is bliss. And tbh, I think the haters are the ones making up the bulk of the viewership of this show. So I'm sure no one is really bothered by it.

It plays off the historical racial prejudice of the paler brahmins and other higher castes against the traditionally darker lower castes. This preceeded white European invasion by about 3000 years. White people didn't make us racist. Very few Indians in America with its EVUL WHITE BUEATY STANDURDS, use the product (which is why Unilever hasn't found success selling the product to the Indian diaspora outside of Asia, yet their ancestors and their relatives who currently live in India use it tremendously.

      ***** Yes, I think people should be able to use whatever products they want for their own beauty goals. I think the problem though is that the reason they usually do it is because they consider being whiter and more European looking better than the way they were born. That mentality usually is brainwashed into people. I don't know any group of people of color that haven't dealt with this. But it's particularly depressing as a black woman and seeing it in my own community how much darker-skinned people hate themselves and how people often mistreat them because of their dark skin. I've deal with that pain myself and in my family and among friends. The worst case I've seen is a woman was bleaching her skin which is... her own choice but she was also bleaching her 7-year old daughter. Other than the fact that her daughter is too young to understand than mentality, I think that should be consider child abuse since she's endangering her health.
      I do believe people should be able to use whatever products they want for whatever purpose. But I think this video is noting how mentally and emotionally damaging such a mentality can be to the person.
      Hope that helps.

    • @Erulassee

      ***** Well I think on a societal scale, more representation would really help. More diversity in movies, especially kid movies, considering how impressionable they are.
      But the communities themselves need to heal as well. Actually that's such a loaded question when I think about it that I really don't know the right answer. Personally I feel the black American community (and the Latin American community) is really far gone when it comes to colorism. I know that at least for black women more are starting to embrace their natural hair and their skin tone despite what others may say. It's really just a matter of fighting back against the naysayers and making their voice a minority. But it's a long tough battle because a lot of it stems from self-hate. Just going based off of my own experience and what I've seen.

    Well. I'm so pale that most highlighters in conture paletts are too dark for me to use them for highlighting, some are darker than my skin (as in the KatVonD-palett), that's why I have to change up what kind of paletts/colors I buy -- to suit my skin. I suggest MTV starts doing the same thing.

    It makes sense for Eurocentric beauty standards to be the standard in the Western World. That's the way it should be. Western countries are mostly whyte so that's what the beauty standard should be. Countries should revolve around the majority; not the minority. In countries with a majority of darker skinned people, the beauty standards will very likely be that of the darker skinned people. If in China the beauty standard is whyte, which it may not be, then that's because the Chinese people there CHOOSE the whyte standard of beauty as their beauty standard. It's not whyte people's job to convince non whytes that they're beautiful. It's up to non whytes to do that for themselves.

      +TrevorSpace Animation there is makeup for darker skinned people but this tends to be harder to come by and harder to choose. Now though i agree with other parts of their argument, I don't think that the make up "issue" is a real issue. The skin whiteners are but not the makeup.

    • @dasneebailey1022
      @dasneebailey1022 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +TrevorSpace Animation darker makeup exists but it is ridiculously hard to find. Many makeup companies only sell a few darker shades which don't which are only going to match a few skin tones, and that's just foundation. I have yet to find a bronzer that matches me and I like.

    • @dasneebailey1022

      +TrevorSpace Animation Of course it exists, but if you go to the makeup section and actually look for it - well, you realize you actually have to look for it. It may not be there at all. If it is, you may not be able to find your shades. The store where I get makeup (Kroger) is seriously about 95% for white skin. Darker colors are on a shelf by the ground, and there are only a couple of rows. I remember when I first noticed it, and suddenly realized that all the makeup there was really for white skin and I had never even realized it, because that's just what was normal to me. Kind of trippy.

    Personally, I think that people who worry about beauty "standards" are being paranoid. There is no "standard."
    Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. _I_ get to define what is (and isn't) beautiful to me. Not you.
    Personally, I think "black" women generally look _better_ with African features. And I see no need for a European woman to tan in order to "improve" her milky-white skin. But that's just me.

    Hey, everyone who is saying this is racist and they are only doing this for propaganda is WRONG! Me being a black girl in this society really does take a toll on my confidence in how I look and feel about myself because of white beauty standards. But because I saw more black women embracing their natural hair styles and in a confident way made me want to embrace mine. White beauty standards still affect me now with my body but I'm learning to not care about that. And not to care about any beauty standards. Just to embrace who I am, inside and out.

You immediately think your ugly. I know I did. It took quite some time for me to realize im actually quite handsome despite having rather dark skin. I do understand why the fuck they're complaining, and I mostly agree, but I'm still convinced that, on some subconscious level, Franchesca Ramsey resents white people. Just look at her previous videos, where whites are mostly portrayed as condescending/annoying/dumb/racist, and note the faces, Ramsey makes when she says 'white', or how she imitates whites. One time she literally said '...we have to look at their faces everywhere' with a disgusted facial expression. Yes, her tone is mostly comedic, and I mostly support her causes, but looking at all the evidence, I'm pretty sure her psychological profile includes inferiority complex and hostile feelings towards whites. Which is racism.

    Cosmetic companies use shades of all ranges. The reason why white beauty standards are predominantly white is because the west is predominantly white. I guarantee you it won't be that way in Africa, Saudi Arabia, El Salvador, or Japan. And so what if someone wants to be lighter? Alot of white people tan, but it doesn't mean we're ashamed of our race .
