I love how much effort Joe puts into the small details of his videos. The background is well lit and clean. Really gives a positive impression. Like getting into a car that is clean and smells nice.
Big vote for the Micca's. I took a chance and haven't looked back. For a desk setting, they are not too big, but do have a big sound presence. Edit: I forgot to mention the thickness, like Joe said, they are beefy for their size. I hurt my knuckles doing the knock knock test.
Joe, If I am not a musician, why would I need monitors? For a regular music lover, we look for staging and imaging with relative accuracy to enjoy the music. I tried Klipsch the Fives, while they do sound good, but they lack of treble. My LG tv speakers sound brighter than Klipsch The Fives.
Still love my Vanatoos. I recently got an Episode 8" sub and the high pass makes them sound even better. It is an entirely different experience than my larger system.
Ive had the Micca RB42's on my desk for a month+ now and really like them. Compact, stylish & pack great punch... esp for the price. Driving them with an A07.
I have the Vanatoos paired with a Sunfire sub (which they do need.) They're unbelievable for the price. Imaging, separation and tonality are all crazy good. Because they tilt up a little bit, the center image when I'm watching TH-cam vids is pinpoint laser focused right in the center of my monitor screen. Can't recommend them enough - I always comment when a vid contains these to spread the word. I paid $350 when I got them, but $399 is still amazing for what you get. Great vid Joe!!
I want a hi end small system very linear and analytical;that sounds very good in low volume for the bedroom which is the best of all in your opinion price is not a problem..(I like too fall asleep with music and I read a lot)
+1 for the RB42s, they're quite popular for good reason. Incredible bass for such a small speaker. Good soundstage too. I use them with the older Emotiva Bas-X 100 and a Schiit Modi streaming from my computer. Great desk top sound from a reasonably priced system.

Loving this channel :) The backdrop looks great. IMO desktop means 4" or smaller, 5"-6" is really too deep most of the time. I think Kali are shaking things up in the budget market. Most of us have limited space for a desk setup and most of your recs are huge. They would require a wall mount. I recommend checking the iLoud Micro and MTM.
I've heard good things about the iLoud Micro but I've never reviewed them. About the size, trust me, those speaker stands that act as risers allow you to use all the space underneath. That's the key. I have a 34" Ultrawide Monitor and I have no issue with a normal width desk. Prior to the desktop speaker stands, I had to use floor stands flanking the sides of the desk.

I am using the crossover in the SA1000. It's a really nice setup. The Min22's don't have much bass, but the sub sounds excellent above 100Hz so it's no big deal.
I usually take measurements of each speaker I review. Take a look and see which ones have a downward slope, or more bass than treble if you want a warm sound.
Paradigm Monitor SE Atom always gets overlooked. Excellent entry level desktop speaker with a small footprint. I'd like to see another subwoofer choice as the SVS is costly. Someone needs to create a small, capable, and inexpensive powered subwoofer for smaller rooms and desktop setups.
Thanks. I've never tried the SE Atoms. I also would like to see more competition in the small subwoofer space. It's these and the KEF KC62 (more expensive) and the Sonos Sub Mini (proprietary.)
The emotive se8 flex sub is probably a really good choice for a desk. Small and has high pass filter for bass management. And cheaper than the micro3000.
@@grusilag That's a pretty good choice of budget-friendly powered subwoofers. Probably should put the emotiva b2+ on the list of passive desktop speakers.
@@grusilag the SE8 is attractive at $349, but it's specs show it can only get down to 33hz compared to the 23hz that the SVS 3000 Micro can go. That's a significant difference that justifies the cost difference in my opinion.
I don't see wharfedale denton 85th on your best desktop speakers leaderboard anymore? I wonder why as they were on the top of the board for a very long time.
Hey Joe thank you for reaching out. Unfortunately, I don’t use telegram. I’ve won a lot of stuff with other TH-camrs but because I don’t have telegram. I never received none of the gifts. Again, thank you my brother. 👍🏽😉💯
Im using a pair of SVS satellites powered by an old Denon AVR2700. And a basic 12" Monoprice sub. Sounds very decent. I really love the SVS satellites, they sound very similar to my old Boston SubSat 7's. Thanks for the great video!
That's true. But a $50 interface would solve that. It's a small price to pay for much better sound. I probably should've mentioned that. Realistically though, a 3.5mm to RCA cable would work also.
none one of these for me. I own The fives but I don't like there is not power button and it needs software update. I got it for $350 brand new opened box but I only play few days and get tire. The one you should mention is Micca pb42X, good size for desktop only $89 if you add a $100 subwoofer total less than 200 it will beat any speakers over $300. sounds so clear .
Excellent! Finally every view of Nearfield listening. Can you recommend passive speakers for Nearfield listening in the $2000-$3000 range for tube amplifiers? Thank you.
For me, a speaker that measures well nearfield will likely also sound good at a distance and vice versa. Nearfield speakers will typically sound brighter than further away. Just make sure the size of the speaker fits the desk and the dispersion pattern isn't too narrow since the sweet spot will be small when up close. From everything I've seen and heard, the KEF LS50's II and Meta are a safe bet.
I use a pair of Wharfedale Denton 80th paired with a sub which I have placed under my desk. Those are driven by a SMSL A300 amp. I'm very happy with this setup.
@@joentell I'm listening to my JBL 305 monitors (monitors volume maxed out) hooked up to my IFI Zen DAC v.2 (analogue volume control) but I don't have any hissing issue...
@@PaperBoat. some people are more sensitive to it than others. It also depends on how quiet your room is. It's a function of the amplifiers themselves, not what it's connected to. The original Kali Audio LP6 used the same amp and they changed to a different module in order to reduce the hiss. Remember, the guys that formed Kali Audio we're formerly from JBL/Harman.
@@joentell I still wonder why they choose *Kali* as their brand name..! Zeos is also chanting *"Kali Maa Shakti De..."* (Mother, bless me with your ultimate power) . The goddess Kali should bless them... 😂
@@joentell Alright thanks man. I was looking to buy computer speakers and was exploring different options. I ended going with iloud micro monitors that I found on eBay for $286.
Love your Leaderboard videos Joe! Really well shot and I like how you keep it your perceptions and not get caught up in what other people may say about certain speakers. Regarding a desk set up, have you found a spacing range that works best for listening near-field and/or do you recommend angling them in to the listening position?
Angling depends on the speaker's dispersion characteristic. It's easy enough at a desk to toe them in/out yourself to get the best effect. Try playing a mono file to get a good solid center image. Then try a track that pans left to right to make sure you have decent width also.
@@joentell Hi Joe! I think this speakers are one of the best deals for both desktop and small rooms! They sell for 450€ in Portugal! If you have the opportunity to review them…you will love the sound! No preamp needed because they also have adjustable attenuation! Congratulations on your channel!
Thanks! Really well put together video. I needed this about a year ago, lol! I auditioned the rb42/nht zero/dali spektor 1's. Kept the Dali's. They are very small and practically disappear.
Thanks Joe for the review. Great topic. I have Audioengine A1 speakers connected to a 12” subwoofer. They sound good. I use Bluetooth to connect to my laptop. Any experience with this brand?
About the price difference between the Kali Audio LP6 V2 Vs. IN5: How much of an actual difference is there in audio fidelity between the two? Or, is it more about things like the off-axis performance that you discussed in this video?
I think the LP-6 V2 might have an even flatter response within the listening window. The off-axis response of the IN-5 can make a difference depending on how many reflective surfaces you have nearby as well as how much you plan on moving while listening critically.
@@joentell Thanks for your reply. Another question I have concerns the amplification: How good of an amp is in the active speakers to begin with. I ask because PSB, for instance, has their P5, but then, they have their active version of the same speaker (AM5) for about $200 more. Does this mean that - if I get the passive version and spend more on an amp - I can get better fidelity than the company's active-version offering? Do you have any experience with the Emotiva A-100 or their new A2M?
I had a vanatoo t0 but I gave it back. The sound was not bad, between the ruark mr1 mkII and the Iloud micromonitor, but the vibrations the whole desk made was unbearable ... Generally Genelec or IK from small speakers in Ruark's 2nd league, Vanatoo or Eve ac 203
Nice Review. I have the Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 , great speakers. I would recommend powered Mackie MR624 or 524. They have class AB amplifiers, quiet, and natural sound.
That's an outstanding list Joe and I couldn't agree more on the SMSL SA300. I run an SA300 with Klipsch R-14M's on my desktop. It's an incredible near field system for minimal $'s. Thank you and keep up the great work.
Great info keep up the great work friend... btw Just Subbed,Liked and bell on! love your room acoustical treatment awesome choice Joe. When you can please hit me up with where you purchased the same. would appreciate it much!
Solid list. I run the SVS Prime Wireless on my PC/Xbox setup with a SB1000 sub and they're great for that purpose. Sadly, their actual purpose of streaming things wirelessly... well, that's not ideal, because the DTS PlayFi app and integration with Alexa randomly decide not to work.
Great video Joe. You pretty much covered them all. I have the PSB Alpha P3's and love their compact size and performance. Paired with my SB 1000 Pro they rock. +1 for the iLoud MTM's and Micro's, I'd be curious what you think of those. Another newer option are the Arendal 1961 bookshelves. I just got those in for my theater and tried them on my desk and they would probably rank pretty high on this list. I do like them better than my PSB's.
I don't think I've come close to covering them all since there are just so many products out, but thank you. I've reached out to the IK Multimedia folks about the iLoud products.
I set up a system wirh Sony SSCS5 speakers, a Fossi audio BT10a and an Yaima A2 dac headphone amp for around $200 and I picked up a JBL headphones $150 list at JBL website $49.99. Very nice sound
The fisrt 2 options are nice. But you need like audio interface to connect them to pc and tv. If all your set is in 1 place like mine pc/ps5 /oled tv and adding a blu ray player (the active speakers have plenty of connectors like optical/rca/ bt / even some with hdmi port. Let say you wanna get the kali audio speakers. How you can connect them to multiple sources?
If you're TV is new, it will likely act as the input source switcher as long as you can get an analog signal out. You may need one of those HDMI audio extractors if your TV doesn't have analog audio out.
@@joentell thank you for the replay , yes is new one lg c1 oled , i never had any monitor speakers and my only question is , what type of audio interface model(device )is good for pairing with them before connecting them to the pc/tv from other hand The fives and the new Elac (both with hdmi ark ) looks really decent.awesome video by the way!
Could you give a few more recommendations for desktop amps? I don't need most of the advanced features (or the price) of the one you mentioned. I have tried powered studio monitors. Something about/around my desk is causing horrible electrical noise that I did not have on cheap Logitech PC speakers. So I'm going to go passive and I want an amp that plugs in to the PC via USB and uses a direct power cable. As far as the noise issue, I tried Eris E5's, Rokit RP5G4 and Adam T5V. They ALL had a random electrical bee buzzing noise.
I haven't tried the MKIII, but I would recommend one of the others I mentioned in this video. I didn't rank the S2000 Pro very high on my leaderboard so I would recommend something else for sure.
You know, I've never reviewed those. I had the sub that I picked up from the trash a long time ago, and I guess something failed with the speakers. I hear it's a common issue. The sub sounded decent though.
GEE -- He explained why the world is total crap right at the start of the video -- WITH EVERYONE SPENDING ALL THEIR TIME ON THEIR COMPUTERS AND AT THEIR DESKS... WOW!
You're on a computer to comment. I don't think that's why the world is "crap." I think what will help us for people to appreciate what they do have. If going out is part of appreciating the world, I can get with that! And I appreciate you taking the time to comment.

I've reviewed the 306p MKII. Too much amplifier hiss
Lots and lots of love 😃😀
Polk ES10?
I like my RSL Speakers
I have been using genelec g1 and f1 speakers on my computer for a few years now and they are awesome.
Genelec is pretty much the standard, but $$$
@@joentell Bought them a really long time ago, lol. was not so bad then
I have the 5's. love them. I also have new SVS powered. For the price nothing better. Reference Maggies.
Thoughts on Kali Audio LP-6 v2 vs HomePod 2 ? It would be great if you could share your thoughts on the homepod 2 vs the speakers on this video.
I'm interested in testing a pair of HomePod's and how well they simulate Atmos.
Ruark MR1 MK2! 👍
Yeah, I've heard of it. We don't have that here in the US unfortunately.
No experience with that brand
Go big or go home. 12 on 12. 12" mains using 12" subs for stands.
Dude you are in 5.1. I noticed it immediately. Great job. What are the noises in there? Strange music?
Ha! Good catch. I just put some background music to see what would happen.
Have you looked at the iloud stuff for nearfield? Especially with MTM with some DSP.
Yes, I've heard good things. They said they were going to send me some a while back but it never happened. It could've been on my end. I'll ask again.
check out the swans d100, zeos just said today these are one of the best desktop speakers, would be interesting to know what you think....
I recomend that you listen the Emotiva airmotive B1 passive speakers they hit way above their weight and are only $250/pair
Yes, I'm interested
Great info keep up the great work friend... btw Just Subbed,Liked and bell on!
love your room acoustical treatment awesome choice Joe. When you can please hit me up with where you purchased the same.
would appreciate it much!
Solid list. I run the SVS Prime Wireless on my PC/Xbox setup with a SB1000 sub and they're great for that purpose. Sadly, their actual purpose of streaming things wirelessly... well, that's not ideal, because the DTS PlayFi app and integration with Alexa randomly decide not to work.
I wonder how their new wireless one is
Great video Joe.
I've reached out to the IK Multimedia folks about the iLoud products.
how about KEF Code 7SE?
I haven't reviewed much KEF stuff, but I'm sure their LS50's and LSX would rank very high on my leaderboard.
@@joentell Thanks.
I set up a system wirh Sony SSCS5 speakers, a Fossi audio BT10a and an Yaima A2 dac headphone amp for around $200 and I picked up a JBL headphones $150 list at JBL website $49.99. Very nice sound
Emotiva B1+ and paradigm se atom should be not only on this list but at the top
Perhaps, but I can only talk about speakers I've had experience with.
Need desktop space for computer and monitor
QUESTION? For the KALI Speakers does the ISOACOUSTICS stand Iso-130, would be the right stand for it?
Off topic, but what diffusion panels are those on your wall, they look great! (They are not listed in your 'my gear' list) Thanks!
Dual tangband bookshelf in the background really looking angry to me for some reason 😂😂
I am using Sony SA-Z1 for the desktop speaker
Wow. I saw those at a trade show. Those look crazy, and the price was $7999/pr last time I checked.
@@joentellThe sound detail like Sony headphone MDR-Z1R, the sound quality is much better than MDR-Z1R.
@@joentell
Elac gets my vote. Close your eyes and the average person can’t telll a $800 pair vs a $200 pair if you have a sub
Specifically what elac modek are you talking about?
I always think about Eddie Murphy movie when I see Hercules
Haha! Hercules, Hercules!
no Nubert 125?
I've never tried those
@@joentell maybe worth a try
The best Desktop Speakers is Airpulse A80
Kanto YU4 + Edifer T5 for sure
Edifier T5's auto standby is very annoying, the sub is not on until certain volume.
I like most of the stuff from SMSL and I've heard good things about Aiyima on Audio Science Review.
Joe, did you try with Genelec 8000 series? I found them excellent for near-field.
Not yet. I wish.
Hi Joe, I am looking for easy bookshelf and I see Edifier has S2000pro and MKIII, I think the mkiii is newer but which one will you recommend?
I haven't tried the MKIII, but I would recommend one of the others I mentioned in this video. I didn't rank the S2000 Pro very high on my leaderboard so I would recommend something else for sure.
@@joentell 🙌gotcha with thanks🍸
What about the audioengine A5+?
any update for 2024?
Hey joe whats your take on the klipsch promedia heritage 2.1 speakers? They're on sale on costco for 180$
You know, I've never reviewed those.
