  • The most interesting manga ever! Goodnight PunPun is a hard manga to read and I hard trouble finishing it. It’s a depressing manga and many people don’t like that. Punpun makes you feel uncomfortable and uneasy. But it’s one of the greatest manga I’ve ever read.

Tbh, punpun was a pretty sad manga. But I definitely wasn’t depressed after I finished it. I just thought it was a pretty well put together work of literature. Not some morbidly poignant manga that depresses me to the point where I can’t sleep anymore

Yea same, I think it’s just my inability to feel sadness through fictional media. Something about it not actually being real takes a lot of the impact out, and I’ve never actually cried during a movie/song/show ect. Guess I’m just emotionless

@@astroaustin516 nah in my view, as long as you’re able to feel emotion from things that are real and not fiction (like oyasumi punpun), then it’s perfectly rational not to be upset by such works. It definitely doesn’t take away from this manga though, like I said in my earlier comment, it’s still great fictional media

it did make me feel a certain way but the best thing about this manga is that it's not never ending misery but it's realistic misery. It doesn't feel unnatural and it allows you to empathize with the characters in such a way that you feel as if you were experiencing those situations yourself. I started reading it in a period were i was very depressed but it brought me a lot comfort instead of making me feel shittier.

1:33 Onodera was always a people pleaser, when he broke his promise to Aiko he probably couldn't live with the burden that a person was relying on him. That's probably why he has obsessive behavior around her. Look at Sachi, they're still together because she relies on Onodera.

Both punpun and aiko acted in horrible ways. Aiko wanted someone who could just leave everything behind for her, and that's why she liked punpun, because he had absolutely nothing. Punpun idolized her to the point that their relationship would inevitably come to disappointment, putting her up to an unreachable pedestal. It's honestly my favorite piece of literature ever

Frankly, what you get out of Punpun is how much you've experienced in your life. Broken people can appreciate the negative themes of this manga. If you haven't experienced a lot of negativity and abuse in your life, you won't be able to fully relate past, "oh, that was kind of sad".
Because the manga is meant for broken people.

    Spoilers
Reading this manga really didn’t make me feel that emptiness and depression that everyone says they feel. Reading through this manga my emotional attachment for the characters was broken, all the absolute fucked up things that punpun and others around him did really made the characters not feel like someone I should be empathetic towards, which I guess is why I guess I didn’t feel much from this manga.
Some of the things that did actually hit me like a bag of bricks were the letter that punpuns mother wrote for him after she died, Shimizu forgetting who seki was, and the letter aiko left after she killed herself

When I saw Aiko hanging, I didn't feel anything. I figured that's where it would eventually end. The only thing I remember saying was "oh", and I can honestly say I just felt relief. I preferred Sachi.
I think the most horrifying part of the manga was Aiko's mom. She crawled around, pretending to be crippled, only for it to be revealed that she could walk, not by coincidence, but because she tried stabbing her own daughter. She dressed in Aiko's uniform, called her over to beat her, made her feel guilty for wanting to leave, manipulated her, but even after all that was over, after she died, there was a final thing her character did that made my stomach drop.
Punpun received a package addressed to Aiko's mom while they were in the house with the mom's corpse. When they opened the package, they found a vibrator. Aiko was isolated, forced to work a job where she was talked down to, abused, and at the end of the day, her mom was likely using the money Aiko made in self serving ways. It felt like all of the things Aiko was put through only led up to a joke.

I wanna feel bad for punpun but it’s actions make me just not. The way he was going to murder aiko and then gets on with his life like usual. Why wouldn’t he take her to the hospital ik she said she didn’t want to and they’d be caught, but he basically accepted he was letting her die slow and painful, choosing not to help her emotional or physical. I think it’s telling the first time he gets a real gf (the one he’s been thinking about forever) he acts like he’s father and treats her terrible, getting more violent and resenting her for the murder and for being her protector. He should of taken her to the hospital but then he’d lose his control on her, they wouldn’t be together. He knew she’d die eventually if he ignored her wounds long enough ( there’s the serval time she suddenly sits down bc she’s in so much pain and pun pun doesn’t seem to concerned or at all like he cares) and was getting more angry every day she didn’t, to the point where he was just going to murder her himself. After all of that he just gets to walk away. Yes he s*lf h*rmed himself took his eye and went to prison for a few years, buts that not enough. He gets with the manga girl, they’re not together but she’s acting as his his pseudo-mom and girlfriend now, accepting the responsibility of dealing with him again. Not to mention her kid looks exactly like him. Ik that was suppose to mean new hope and him projecting onto the baby seeing it as himself but it looked like he was dad, that even what I thought when she told him she was pregnant.
Ik aiko was bad too. From the moment she met punpun again she was emotionally trying to manipulate, feeling him out with lies, but so was he lol. She does other bad stuff too ik like the murder but I can hardly feel to bad for me mom but it does show how unhinged and ready she is to snap especially during moment of extreme stress. She goes on to pull a knife in punpun (this is ofc bad but she did think he was taking her into the woods to kill her, seeing who abusive he had been leading up to that I don’t blame her. However it was definitely not okay when she stabbed him ofc she was in the wrong.) She also wants punpuns eyes as a way to show his devotion and to make the wish. So yah she’s not great but she didn’t deserve a death sentence cared out by her abusive and neglectful bf over the course of a emotional distance and violent two weeks.
I wish the writer went with the ending where he gets hit by a train.
Also as soon as punpun said ‘you need to talk to your mom before you leave’ i knewww it was going to be the case of the girl gets tragically killed or sacrificed to give her lover more of an emotional journey. It felt predictable and I just think that trope is lame. You can have a tragic and morally skewed, female character, who is also the main love interest, without them dying. The trope of sad women die for man and man is better bc of it bc he grows emotionally, is terrible I’m sorry.
It’s like punpun got a happy ending, surrounded by friends and back to his old self, sure he has dreams about the gf he murder but he even says he’s letting go after a year, as if he’s saying this won’t effect me anymore. He felt guilty for a year, took his own eye, got a few years in prison, doesn’t seem right considering all he did to aiko

I respect your opinion and yes I get why you would hate this manga (for me I just have a love hate relationship with Punpun’s character because he does the dumbest shit). Still a great manga and I’m pretty sure you used the background songs from the Oyasumi Punpun playlist.

    • @BasedBuffet
      @BasedBuffet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

You’re right I did use the playlist, nice catch! The story was extremely well written in my opinion, it depicted reality in such a way my mental state had a hard time coping with the ending and that’s why a stayed away from the manga once I finished.

@@BasedBuffet That's a possibility. A still really enjoyed the manga and I was sort of torn at Punpun's actions. I sort of proposed an argument to myself about his actions and although he wasn't dealt the best hand in life he also wasn't dealt the word hand either. So I can't really say he was justified in indulging in his selfish desires. He's such an interesting character. Also, Pegasus reminded me of Jesus in a lot of ways (before he killed himself and everyone).

TBH I never was THAT depressed over this manga. Mostly because I stopped caring about PunPun after he tried to rape that girl after that art exhibition and I think that kind of made me not enjoy this manga that much. Also that whole plot thread with the Cult, Shimizu and Seki felt like they belonged in completely different manga and sometimes felt like a waste of time (although Shimizu and Seki are my favorite characters). If I ever put this manga at my favorite top 10 list I would say it's like 10 or 9, but I don't think I will have it even in top 10.

I think the idea of goodnight punpun WAS to make you feel worthless and to absolutely make you hold onto hope. That something is there. That maybe it will end up okay, which it doesn’t. Which destroys the reader. I think asanos idea was to not give the reader what they want to insert themselves into punpun or aikos shoes. To hope that everything will end with okay. Which in turn is mentally damaging for both of them and they destroy themselves which makes punpun such an emotional read cause we destroy ourselves for things we love or we destroy ourselves because we have hope. Which makes it such a good read

I could not sympathize with any of these characters, so when something “shocking” happened to them, I didn’t care. I felt absolutely nothing when Aiko died. Punpun relies on you being able to relate to it, which may be fine for the earlier chapters but once the manga starts getting into Punpun's adulthood many of the younger readers were lost because they just hadn't experienced what he was going through and couldn't sympathize.
