I love how this scene reveals the weakness of each character in rapid succession. Evelyn's weakness is for books. Johnathan's weakness is for gold and riches. Rick's weakness is his naive sense of moral duty. In each case, when one character was overcome by their particular weakness, the other two intervened. But when Benny is overcome by his weakness, he is alone.
That and just pure greed to an absurd degree. He already could've lived in splendor with the treasure he had taken the first time around (along with that gold Imhotep bribed him with). Somehow snatched defeat in the jaws of victory.
I hate that all protagonists made it out alive. So lame.
Jonathan pausing there is hysterical
Wow, never looked at it like that. Good point.
After what Beni did by deliberately helping Imotep murder the Americans and kidnap Evelyn, he got what he deserved.
I always liked that even though Beni betrayed Rick and his friends to save his own life,, Rick still tried to save him.
Yeah, just goes to show that Rick is the better man.
Yeah badass Rick! Even he knows that no one deserves such an unimaginable horrific fate. Meanwhile, Indiana Jones kills people without remorse in unimaginable horrific ways. Rick O'Connell> Indiana Jones
If that was Indiana Jones he would've left Beni to die. He is such a remorseless asshole 😤
@@martinlopez2816 To be honest, Jones hasn't killed that many people, many of them weren't that innocent and some of them even tried to help them like a guy in the second movie who tried to prevent him from being crushed by a stone mill in a mine but he couldn't, just that Jones He has faced armies more than supernatural beings
@@ROLITO-G-243 which is a reason why Indiana Jones wouldn't stand a chance against someone like Rick, who has fought an ancient Egyptian priest with God like powers, against human eating scarabs, immortal assassins and vicious mercenaries, plus did very good hand to hand against a legendary Chinese heroic figure and fought a fucking legendary warrior with the body of a giant scorpion who served as Anubis's servant. Jones would have been dropped dead against the Scorpion King in a second, considering he is NOWHERE agile or strong as Rick. Jones profession is fighting lackluster Nazis, not the fucking horrific monstrosities Rick's fought.

Those bugs were probably one of if not the most terrifying enemies in the mummy movies, they were remorseless, unyielding and a damn near unstoppable force in a swarm of them .
Anyone who wasn't Imhotep or had a flamethrower had to get out of their way or run when they came crawling along
Right?! They scared the absolute s*** out of me when I was a child.
@@amaybury4672 bro me too- 😂 I love the movie but the whole scene fucked me up
The funny thing is that IRL scarab beetles are totally harmless and literally just roll around balls of other creatures' dung all day. Quite the Hollywood glow-up.
The crazy part is the bugs aren't even necessarily fictional, their size and harm just aren't as exaggerated as they are in the movie.
@@williamlong4574 Yes, Scarabs (aka dung beetles) do exist in real life, but thankfully they don't eat living things, much less in the way portrayed in the movies.
Goodbye, Beni. The way O'Connell said it, he actually felt sorry for Beni, even though Beni didn't deserve his sympathies. It taught Beni his lesson however. It pays not to be greedy.
Anastasiamajoras
Its also ironic considering he died in the Tomb with all of the Relics and Gold.
Same here. No it doesn't pay but yet we still have Republicans.
@@SicilianStealth Paul and Nancy pelosi
@@SicilianStealth we can only hope they get their comeuppance like Beni
I love how the scarabs waited until the the torch went out before going to town on Beni. Like they were saying to the audience "yeeeah, you don't wanna see what we do to this guy. Trust us, it's gruesome."
Its because they're afraid of fire. Most insects and animals have an innate, instinctual fear of fire due to its intense heat and light. That torch was the ONLY thing keeping them from eating him. When it went out; so did his time.
If you watch scenes with them in both movies closely you notice they're afraid of fire. That's why they didn't attack him.
Non domesticated animals are afraid of fire.
Well earlier we see exactly what they do to people lol. The swarm went over two people and seconds later all that's left is their skeletons.
@@Fr0st1989 Oh I know, I saw the movies a few times. But this one just sounded particularly horrible. Like out of all the scarab victims, Beni got it the worst.
The classic ending, everything collapses, villains are punished, heroes are saved
So cliche but still fun
and the hero gets the girl.
It’s cliche because these were the movies that started the trends, so for 80s-90s action movies where the villains lose and the hero’s win and get the girl. They arnt cliche because they pretty much made the mold for it, movies tropes nowadays try to copy that trend and that’s why we feel they are cliche and stereotypical. But that only pertains to the new movies now. While the old ones seem fine because they were the creators of that trend
Classic boring crap.

Congratulations to Brendan Fraser on his 2023 Academy Award! True, it was for "The Whale" and not "The Mummy" but he deserved the award. Cool come back story too! He's been out of the limelight for such a long time, great to see him win.
The phrase "goodbye Benny" has stuck to me since I was a kid.

@@impvkrishna lmao wut? It's a perfectly put together adventure movie, but its strength is in being derivative, that's not going to win awards. Obviously a subversive, boundry-pushing experimental drama is gonna win.
The irony is that he already got a good chunk of treasures out, but still decided to come back and get more
Yeah, that's greed for ya

@@omkr0122 ppl never seize good opportunities that could save their life smh
and the bag Beni got from the first trip is what the trio ride off with on the camel at the end, which sets them up to be very wealthy in the sequel. which is how Jonathan got the spear of osiris that kills the scorpion king
Yup. Killed by his own greed. A fitting end for the little backstabbing creep.
What I’ve always loved about this scene is that it’s very telling of the kind of man Rick is:
Even after everything Beni has done throughout the movie, even after his many betrayals, Rick still tried to save him. That’s a good dude right there.
He probably would've shot him later, but yeah, nobody deserves to be eaten alive.
@Alknix i don't think was instially thinking of beni getting eaten by scrabs but yeah.
Poor Beni. He already had everything set, was outside the temple and could've just left right there. But nope... he got greedy.
Don't feel bad for him. He betrayed his friends many times and let good people die. He got what he deserved.
Truth. It shows greed isn't always good.

I agree.
The best adventure movie
I find funny that the book version of this Benny was thinking when the doors shut "Benny always finds a way out of everything", only to be screaming in the dark once the scarabs find him
The fact that the place has a self-destruct lever is just... 😂
even funnier, how does that make the walls and the pillars outside fall over?

@@N2Deep00 cruse u Pharoah perry the platypus

@ElMeketrefe It must have, no one found it yet. XD
Moral of the story is never ever let greed or cowardice get the best of you and don’t betray your friends so you save your own skin.
It sure as hell didn't save his skin. Literally 😂
I still wonder why Beni went back into the tomb. Had he'd stayed outside, he would've been OK and survived. He let greed get the better of him.
If he had any brain he would not have helped the evil forces. You think evil people can handle a crisis? Do you think they have courage and wisdom to deal with any situation? Beni' decisions throughout are a reflection of his soul. He gets his karma. But even these people return empty handed. Good or evil no one finds any treasure. Life's like that.

YES!!! Did so at the theater we watched it in also. My friend mumbled 'Uuhhh Ohhhh'!!
Watching this in theaters...lucky lad.
As a kid then, I learnt the lesson of not be greedy from this movie scene.
Beni: "wanna die little bug?"
scarab: "I'm not trapped in here with you. You're trapped in here with us."
Beni: "...us?"
scarab: "LOOKS LIKE MEATS BACK ON THE MENU BOYS"
2:46
That’s always been an amazing image to me. I don’t know how they did all that, but I think they did a great job at that effect.
I think there's multiple layers put together, one with the destruction, another with the actors, probably a 3rd for extra effects, like the blue Sky behind, or the camel (?)
@@sirjazz1268 figured
Why I never bored with this movie? Because it’s awesome
Beni's corpse should have at least made a cameo in the sequel.
My family used to joke that Beni would be the main villain in the sequel. Beni's back and boy is he pissed!
Lol, that's would have been a great idea.
His corpse popping up somewhere, then Rick looking aloof and goes... "Goodbye Beni". 😂
If Beni just let that bag go a few moments earlier he would have made it

@@kevinbabu8919 nah he'd leave him there without food, water and transportation
It's a juxtaposition between him and the other characters. When Johnathan was enthralled by the gold, his friends saved him. When Evelyn was freaking out about the book, her friends saved her. When Benny was clinging to the bag of gold, he was alone.
Ultimate lesson: DON'T LET GREED CONSUME YOU.
GREED will imprison us all...
Yeah imagine if he'd decided to try to high tail it out of there with the first bag of gold he got out taking all the camel's with him leaving Rick, Eve, and Jonathan stranded out there.......... though of course there was the Magi guy who could have possibly saved them if that were the case.
exactly as i said
"greed can kill you."
i was like "beni now it's you're chance to to get the hell out of here and be rich move on"
then this "oh beni no....! don't decided to be creedy"
Yea. It does happen
It will consume you really bad
What a beautiful lady she is..
The bugs killing him actually doing him a favor. It’s worse to die locked up and starve to death
they probably ate him very slowly considering they were stuck too
Even if the scarab beetles hadn’t eaten him alive, he’d still have been crushed to death by the place being destroyed
Then I felt bad for scarab beetles being locked in the dark underground temple not seeing daylight or getting enough air!
Very painful favour indeed.
Beni was a nice guy. He actually said once that O'Connell was his only friend. That was after he ditched O'Connell in the battle at Hamunaptra. Imagine what he would do if O'Connell was not his friend.
Beni was a greedy coward, who'd have sold his own mother for a gold coin.
Beni was never his friend, u don't align urself with evil just to be greedy than try to help kill ur friends future wife....when he said O'Connell was his only friend that was pure manipulation and O'Connell knew it why do you think he threw him over the boat after he said that
A nice message about greedy in the end: Beni dying along an enormous treasure.
you know, I have a theory that those beetles eat very quickly when in wide open spaces, but when trapped they will eat very slowly to conserve their food, so this is very bad for Beni
Its too many beetles though. Beni died quickly. But good news is that all the beetles probably died within a day or so cause there was no more air in the temple.
@@hidan407 insects are still alive watch the 2nd movie

The scene he gets trapped inside haunted me when I was a kid.
Even without the bugs. To know there's no way out and that you're going to starve to death in the dark and all you can do is wait for it. Ugh.
First ever movie I watched in the cinema with my dad. As a kid too I was absolutely crushing hard on Evelyn (first ever too). This movie means something to me.
I think this was the best of the 3 movies!
My favorite mummy saga....modern mummy is becoming more like action franchise...rather than focusing on mummy itself 🥲
thnx to beni, they got a shit ton of gold
Even though it was karma and Beni deserved it, Rick still tried to save him. If Beni had not been greedy and went back inside for more gold, he still would have been outside and survived. Had he had let that heavy bag of gold go earlier he could have made it before the door closed. His greed is what killed him.
One thing I noticed while watching the movie, was that Beni seemed to greatly fear death, especially when he's staring at it right in it's face.
Bennie: at least you’ll slowly eat me?
Scarabs: what dumbass told you that?!
That's probably worse
This is second comment I’ve seen saying the same stupid shit.

Honestly the set pieces and special effects for the movie were amazing for their time that whole set of the tomb and whatnot would have been 100% cgi today instead of practical.

Seriously one of the saddest deaths I’ve seen in movies. He literally did everything earlier just to survive. It was so avoidable, and despite everything, Rick still tried to save him.
"He literally did everything earlier just to survive."
This is 'literally' nonsense. Aside from his first encounter with Imhotep, Beni had options all throughout the story to act in service to something other than his greed and cowardice. And he _always_ chose greed and cowardice. This includes his choice to continue helping Imhotep after that initial encounter, which he did for the promise of reward.

What always bugged me was how deep was Beni going in the tomb to get this treasure. There was plenty of treasure in that room he died in which was close to the exit. Why go even further into the tomb for the treasure? What a fool.
He probably thought he could collect all of them so he started from those deeper inside the tomb.

Actually they call it Scarabs or beetles either way
I loved soundtrack that movie
In a way, Beni did had it coming for his antics in The Mummy (1999), especially since because of his alliance with Imhotep, he got all of the Americans, Winston, and Dr. Terence Bay all killed.
Not to mention that Beni basically left Rick O'Connell to be killed near the opening of The Mummy (1999) when the duo used to serve in the French Foreign Legion.
I like That Movie
Beni actually could have had it worse. if the scarabs werent there, he'd be alone in the dark until he dies of thirst or hunger. days alone of pure torment.
I actually just caught a Mummy marathon on USA channel, after SVU! Almost forgot how much of a love letter to the classics it was.

Had Beni chosen to not try and grab the second bag of treasures, he would’ve made it in time to get out. At the end, his greed sealed his fate, not that he doesn’t deserve though.
