Dan Baird is just a terrifically nice guy. I'm in the band Scott Manery & The Barnburners out of Sarnia Canada. We've had some good luck, a bit of success and a few CD's out. On our last CD we reached out to Dan, and sent him a MP3's of Scott's original named "Steel Driving Man". We'll Dan got back to us quickly, liked the song, and sang harmony and played acoustic on it too!! A nicer guy that get's mentioned at every show we play. Thanks Dan, and Otis for this one!
Dan has always had great guitar tones. His guitar sounds on his home recordings are better than most major release stuff. He has great instincts for what rock and roll guitar should sound like.
I've had that tone in the back of my mind forever. Last year, I finally bought my first Tele and a Fender tube amp at age 54. Didn't know about the Echoplex - but will now be investigating. When Dan speaks you gotta listen! The Satellites, John Hiatt and Los Lobos basically saved rock n roll for this Canadian boy in the 80s.
I saw the Satellites with JATS on that same tour at a theater in St. Louis, the name of which is lost in the mists of time. It was a theater in the round, featuring a slowly rotating stage. Dan was not by any means a stationary figure while on stage. During their set, Dan, either because he failed to appreciate the round stage or that it was moving, or both, was racing around during a particular song and crashed off the stage in a rather dramatic fashion. He climbed back up with a sheepish grin and went right back to work, none the worse for wear. The band did not miss a beat. Another great highlight of that show was Jason handing the mic over to a fan who was singing along with the opening to Broken Whiskey Glass. He said “here, you sing it” and the kid nailed it perfectly. Warner even shook his hand. Hail, hail, Rock and Roll!

Meeting one’s heroes can be pretty sketchy, it doesn’t usually turn out as one would hope, but that’s another story. Me and the boys were fortunate to open for Ol’ Uncle Dan Baird and his band. It was in one of those old school road houses that are pretty much extinct now a days. On that particular night, Dan Baird carried himself with dignity, grace, and respect. Then he, and his mates proceeded to absolutely blow the roof off that joint, rock n roll at its best! In the late '80's, I led a band in Wilmington, North Carolina. We did my originals and a select group of covers, including "Keep Your Hands To Yourself" which was always a crowd pleaser. I'm pretty sure we learned "Battleship Chains", too, as the USS North Carolina was docked just down the street.
One night at about 9:30 my buddy backed his van right up to my front door with his rear doors wide open and blasted Keep your hands through his monster system. Scared the shit out of the wife- but it only took me about 10sec to lock onto the groove...changed my life that night. We just covered it the other night at our local Blues jam- NEVER FAILS to drive the crowd insane...LOVE YOU GA SATellites
I adored "Keep Your Hands to Yourself" the moment I heard it, simply because it sounded like the great song the Rolling Stones had tried to record for about 15 years. This is how much appeal it had -- even my mom, who's no big rock fan, loved it.
I'm 63 and I have the same retirement plan as Ole Dan here,... it's more than enough to stay at home and collect a few guitars and play the bars when you can finally get musicians to pay attention long enough to learn a few songs,... listening to Dan telling the story is delightful fer sure,... especially how he got Steve Mariott's Tele,... what a lucky guy! I build guitars now and Teles are fun to experiment with,... (not real Teles,... never real ones),... just the partscastors...!
I saw the Satellites at Illinois State University around 1988. I think they opened for The Outfield that night. He busted his lip on the mic the first song and bled the whole show. They ROCKED!!!
I've always thought that "I Love You, Period" is one of the greatest examples of Rock and Roll poetry out there; it stands up there with those 2-minute blasts of energy from Chuck Berry or the Rolling Stones. "Short and Screech" instead of Short and Sweet is the way to go. I wish I could hear Danny talk about some old Atlanta groups like Hydra or the Fans. I lived there for a decade a lifetime ago, and I heard LOTS of great stories. Love when YOU share stories, Otis. Thanks for sharing these treasures with us.
Man this song.... I got introduced to it from friends older sister in Perth Australia late 80's early 90's. It got played at every Friday/Saturday "piss up". Fun times, great memories.
Was getting another beverage at the bar at Hedgens when M E the bartender said "come on let's dance". The Satellites were playing "I knew the bride when she used to rock and roll" and Dan pulled us both on stage to sing the chorus. I remember the front window behind the stage was covered with a big piece of plywood because someone had broke it the week before while fighting. The back parking lot was a lot of fun too, the Satellites took long breaks between sets.
I was a mobile DJ for 33 years and Keep You Hands was one of a handful of songs that was a valuable tool to get people motivated in almost any situation, wedding reception, bar, whatever. So my thanks to Dan for providing that resource to use in my work. I am glad it allowed him to realize a comfortable living, he deserves it.
Dan I hope you keep on doin fine. Keep Your Hands to Yourself was played at my wedding, my request, and I still play it several times a week. It's one if my proud-to-be-a-redneck songs :)
When I saw Dan and Homemade Sin in Atlanta around 2014-2015, he introduced this classic by saying, “It’s time to pay the mortgage.” Also, my wife would like to jokingly thank Dan for hearing loss she suffered upon seeing the Satellites play at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano in the late ‘80s.
Saw the the Georgia Satellites play at the Reading festival in 87. 30 years later I saw Rick Richards play a couple of songs with Lucinda Williams at the Playhouse in Atlanta. Back in 87 I never thought I would be living in GA. Rick still had great hair!

Many years ago in Portland, Or, the Sattelites were opening a (coliseum venue) show for Hank Williams Jr. This obviously did not satisfy their appetite for a full evening of RnR exercise! So they played a show a bit later at a nefarious and infamous venue in Portland's Old Town district. It was either a $1.00 or $1.99 cover. The band played their asses off for nearly three hours. Within just a song or two you may as well have been in their own garage! Total abandon, the only people that may have had as much fun as this gnarled, overly seasoned sonic mercenary, was the band!! Thank you guys for a glorious night that still keepss me jumpin'!!!
My FIRST CONCERT!!! GEORGIA SATELLITES and HEART at Sandstone in Kansas i was 12!! Friend drummer Shane Goade went w me I had won tickets on the radio it was the amazing BAD ANIMALS Tour! Never will forget seeing Dan with the YAHOOS for an awesome show in St. Marks or so lower Manhattan a few days after 9-11 2001, i was one of two people at the show! Great album all around KEEP YOUR HANDS TO YOURSELF was a massive video on MTV as well, still probably one of the all time greats..
I used to play bass in a cover band, we would always do "Keep Your Hands to Yourself" in the 1st set... I LOVE the bassline, it has that fat & greasy groove that got them booties shakin' !!!

"The One I am" is the title of my favorite song Dan did. Love songs for the hearing impaired is the one of my favorite albums of all time. I used to wonder why every song on it didn't become a legendary track. ( They did to me! ) I bought the cassette when it came out because my girlfriend liked "I Love you, Period." After hearing the whole album, it became the only cassette I listened to while driving for years. That cassette bit the dust and time wore on. Sometime around 2000 I went to buy a new copy and found no one had it. A record store clerk tried ordering it and found out it was out of print. I spent a few years looking in pawn shops and thrift store discount bins for a copy , but could never find it. It had been twenty years since I had heard anything except "Love you period." I never quit looking for that album. When the internet became a thing, I looked for it there and couldn't find it. Finally found it on the web around 09. The first listen after all those years was great. It was better than I was capable of knowing back in the eighties. It's back out there now. It seems it took the world at large awhile to figure out that was a classic album. Something I knew the first time I heard it. Dan Baird is one of a kind. He caught lightning in a bottle and Im glad he made it to a comfortable retirement. Rock til you drop, Y'all. Thanks Otis. You're a treasure, man.
Dan has such a great perspective on the success of the George Satellites and especially Keep Your Hands to Yourself. There are so many musicians who achieve some level of success and then get a real snobby attitude towards what helped them break through. Dan is humble, grateful and has a sense of humor about all of it.
Red Light or Battleship Chains…but that’s today. That album was the soundtrack to a summer for me so I have moments with every single song on it. Hard to believe not only that it has been so long…but I was actually a kid once!
Love Songs For the Hearing Impaired tour. circa 1992-ish. Me & a buddy sat at the bar with him at after a show @ The Vogue in Indy on a cold, snowy December night. It was so bad outside, the venue just stopped selling tix at the door and began letting ppl in for free due to the terrible conditions and scarcity of day-of-show attendees. I think my ears still bleed from that twin telly attack! Julie + Lucky, I Love You Period, Knocked Up, Dixie Beauxderaunt....Lyrical Genius!
Having lived in Atlanta and waitressed in music clubs in the seventies, I'd love to hear musicians from Atlanta talk about that era Because of the predators and psychopaths out there, I wisely chose to eschew a music career. Hearing these tales would be great. Watched it from the sidelines by choice. Love to hear others perspective. So...any old stories about Buckhead, Stein Club, Alex Cooley's, Richards on Monroe Etc As a writer it's always great to listen to others stories. Appreciate you sharing .💯🐦💐🌹🪶
I fell in love with that album and especially Battleship Chains. One of the best concerts I ever saw was shortly after this came out the Satellites and the Del Fuegos opened for Tom Petty.
My all time favourite song. I have the lyrics to it framed on the wall. My band covers it (the crowd always loves it). It was even the “first dance” at my wedding!
Our band started doing this song about 3 years ago and it quickly became a crowd favorite. When I come to the punch line my keyboard player sings it in a falsetto girlie voice and everybody cracks up. I love it!

On a similar note, I saw a Steve Earle interview wherein he said to the fans (I'm paraphrasing), "Don't worry, we WILL play Copperhead Road. We play it every single gig. Relax. You don't have to scream for it through the rest of the show. We will play it, I promise."
Dan was a big influence on me. That first Satellites album came out just before I got my first guitar at 13. The band was kinda done by the time I was able to start going to concerts, so I never got to see them live. Finally got to see Dan with Homemade Sin in 2019. Told my boss not to schedule me that night because I was going to the show. She said no one gets days off during that time of year, so I reiterated I was going to the show regardless. She then said I wouldn't be working there anymore. To which I replied a 3rd time that I was going to that show. I felt kinda bad for the band because it was a Thursday, and the place was empty. Maybe 25 people. It was just basically not promoted. I got to talk to Dan for a bit and got some pictures with everyone in the band, but the dj was just too damn loud to talk comfortably. I did get to ask what amp he was using hidden behind a 2x12 cabinet(Orange Tiny Terror), and a few other gear related questions and compliments. To me, Dan has the best Telecaster sound since Don Rich, and I've stolen a lot from him(and Rick Richards) to develop "my" guitar sound. Thanks Dan!!!
Dan is one of my favorite people on Otis' channel, for sure. He can really put you in the place when something happened. A great storyteller but probably also has something to do with his artist/writer's mind. Always liked the Georgia Satellites, you could tell even back then they were a real band with real people in it, not a plastic imitation. A great song I still have in rotation today, always wanted to hear the backstory. Always good to know and see a simple song from humble beginnings can still provide a decent livable wage (or maybe a little more lol) for a songwriter (as it should be). Thanks again Otis and Dan
Dan Baird is one of my "Holy Trinity" of my songwriters, with Bob Dylan and Kris Kristofferson being the other two. Just an incredible songwriter and one of the most underrated ones, at that. "Don't Open That Door" is one of my favorites that only die hard Dan Fans really know of. It's such a funny song and the guitar playing on it is just perfect.

Used to play it, sometimes sing (for) and sometimes with this girl who was way outta my league I had a crush on. Never did get any.

Dan was such a treat to see on the Outlaw Country Cruises. He jumped on stage with Sarah Borges and killed it. She turned around and was flabbergasted. I know it's hope beyond hope that he comes out of retirement on the boat for vacation and sits in on a set or three.
The Georgia Satellites were one of the greatest Rock N Roll bands of all time. They influenced lots of artists that ended up become way bigger and more well known than Dan and the guys. " In the Land of Salvation and Sin" is my favorite record by The Georgia Satellites. It's in my top 5 greatest Rock albums ever. The liner notes of the album mentioned several other bands and artists that the guys liked or had toured with Drivin N Cryin, Ramones, Replacements, The Del Lords, etc. I bought records from all of the band's and artists and they were all great and that helped form my musical tastes to this day.
My favorite Satellites tune? Easy. Red Light. My favorite Satellites show? At the Hideaway in Murfreesboro, TN shortly before there first album was released. Tiny, tiny room with a great opening act, the Blind Farmers from Hell.

It worked because it made sense; it sounded like it was time for this song. They were a great sounding band. It’s good to know you are both in the world.
Chub The Temple played this song for 5 years, it was just so much fun and people danced every time. Not just a little, but packed the dance floor. All Over But the Cryin is definitely my favorite Georgia Satellites song.
When I saw Dan and Homemade Sin in Atlanta around 2014-2015, he introduced this classic by saying, “It’s time to pay the mortgage.” Also, my wife would like to jokingly thank Dan for hearing loss she suffered upon seeing the Satellites play at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano in the late ‘80s.
That’s a great song, but that whole album really rocks. One of my favorite of all time.
Saw the the Georgia Satellites play at the Reading festival in 87. 30 years later I saw Rick Richards play a couple of songs with Lucinda Williams at the Playhouse in Atlanta. Back in 87 I never thought I would be living in GA. Rick still had great hair!

I've played" keep your hands to yourself " a thousand times. It's one of those songs you have to play to keep the dance floor going. Played it this past weekend and of course dance floor packed. And got paid. Lol
Many years ago in Portland, Or, the Sattelites were opening a (coliseum venue) show for Hank Williams Jr.
This obviously did not satisfy their appetite for a full evening of RnR exercise! So they played a show a bit later at a nefarious and infamous venue in Portland's Old Town district. It was either a $1.00 or $1.99 cover. The band played their asses off for nearly three hours. Within just a song or two you may as well have been in their own garage! Total abandon, the only people that may have had as much fun as this gnarled, overly seasoned sonic mercenary, was the band!! Thank you guys for a glorious night that still keepss me jumpin'!!!

My FIRST CONCERT!!! GEORGIA SATELLITES and HEART at Sandstone in Kansas i was 12!! Friend drummer Shane Goade went w me I had won tickets on the radio it was the amazing BAD ANIMALS Tour! Never will forget seeing Dan with the YAHOOS for an awesome show in St. Marks or so lower Manhattan a few days after 9-11 2001, i was one of two people at the show! Great album all around KEEP YOUR HANDS TO YOURSELF was a massive video on MTV as well, still probably one of the all time greats..
I used to play bass in a cover band, we would always do "Keep Your Hands to Yourself" in the 1st set... I LOVE the bassline, it has that fat & greasy groove that got them booties shakin' !!!
"We're not gonna extend it or anything like that". THANK YOU! That's how you do it, folks. Almost every artist has worn out the extended thing. Nothing worse than a 10 minute drum solo or "crowd participation" in the middle of a good groovin' song.
"The One I am" is the title of my favorite song Dan did. Love songs for the hearing impaired is the one of my favorite albums of all time. I used to wonder why every song on it didn't become a legendary track. ( They did to me! ) I bought the cassette when it came out because my girlfriend liked "I Love you, Period." After hearing the whole album, it became the only cassette I listened to while driving for years. That cassette bit the dust and time wore on. Sometime around 2000 I went to buy a new copy and found no one had it. A record store clerk tried ordering it and found out it was out of print. I spent a few years looking in pawn shops and thrift store discount bins for a copy , but could never find it. It had been twenty years since I had heard anything except "Love you period." I never quit looking for that album. When the internet became a thing, I looked for it there and couldn't find it. Finally found it on the web around 09. The first listen after all those years was great. It was better than I was capable of knowing back in the eighties. It's back out there now. It seems it took the world at large awhile to figure out that was a classic album. Something I knew the first time I heard it. Dan Baird is one of a kind. He caught lightning in a bottle and Im glad he made it to a comfortable retirement. Rock til you drop, Y'all. Thanks Otis. You're a treasure, man.

Dan has such a great perspective on the success of the George Satellites and especially Keep Your Hands to Yourself. There are so many musicians who achieve some level of success and then get a real snobby attitude towards what helped them break through. Dan is humble, grateful and has a sense of humor about all of it.
Red Light or Battleship Chains…but that’s today. That album was the soundtrack to a summer for me so I have moments with every single song on it. Hard to believe not only that it has been so long…but I was actually a kid once!
Love Songs For the Hearing Impaired tour. circa 1992-ish. Me & a buddy sat at the bar with him at after a show @ The Vogue in Indy on a cold, snowy December night. It was so bad outside, the venue just stopped selling tix at the door and began letting ppl in for free due to the terrible conditions and scarcity of day-of-show attendees.
I think my ears still bleed from that twin telly attack!

I fell in love with that album and especially Battleship Chains. One of the best concerts I ever saw was shortly after this came out the Satellites and the Del Fuegos opened for Tom Petty.

My all time favourite song. I have the lyrics to it framed on the wall. My band covers it (the crowd always loves it). It was even the “first dance” at my wedding!
Our band started doing this song about 3 years ago and it quickly became a crowd favorite. When I come to the punch line my keyboard player sings it in a falsetto girlie voice and everybody cracks up. I love it!

Awesome video, Otis! I'm very happy that Dan has a retirement plan thanks to KYHTY. And I love his attitude of "always play the hit song". He is the real deal, one of my heroes indeed.
On a similar note, I saw a Steve Earle interview wherein he said to the fans (I'm paraphrasing), "Don't worry, we WILL play Copperhead Road. We play it every single gig. Relax. You don't have to scream for it through the rest of the show. We will play it, I promise."

Dan was a big influence on me. That first Satellites album came out just before I got my first guitar at 13. The band was kinda done by the time I was able to start going to concerts, so I never got to see them live. Finally got to see Dan with Homemade Sin in 2019. Told my boss not to schedule me that night because I was going to the show. She said no one gets days off during that time of year, so I reiterated I was going to the show regardless. She then said I wouldn't be working there anymore. To which I replied a 3rd time that I was going to that show. I felt kinda bad for the band because it was a Thursday, and the place was empty. Maybe 25 people. It was just basically not promoted. I got to talk to Dan for a bit and got some pictures with everyone in the band, but the dj was just too damn loud to talk comfortably. I did get to ask what amp he was using hidden behind a 2x12 cabinet(Orange Tiny Terror), and a few other gear related questions and compliments.
To me, Dan has the best Telecaster sound since Don Rich, and I've stolen a lot from him(and Rick Richards) to develop "my" guitar sound. Thanks Dan!!!
I've chatted with Dan briefly at some of his shows throughout the years. Incredibly nice, talented guy. Hope he's enjoying his retirement.

Dan is one of my favorite people on Otis' channel, for sure. He can really put you in the place when something happened. A great storyteller but probably also has something to do with his artist/writer's mind.
Always liked the Georgia Satellites, you could tell even back then they were a real band with real people in it, not a plastic imitation. A great song I still have in rotation today, always wanted to hear the backstory. Always good to know and see a simple song from humble beginnings can still provide a decent livable wage (or maybe a little more lol) for a songwriter (as it should be).

Dan Baird is one of my "Holy Trinity" of my songwriters, with Bob Dylan and Kris Kristofferson being the other two. Just an incredible songwriter and one of the most underrated ones, at that.
"Don't Open That Door" is one of my favorites that only die hard Dan Fans really know of. It's such a funny song and the guitar playing on it is just perfect.
I had to find it in my 'Dan Baird' song storage but, Yea! Cool song. Gonna listen to 'Out of Mothballs' all the way thru.

Gotta say Keep Your Hands to Yourself is my favorite. But I also love Open All Night, Battleship Chains and Another Chance so much! A little after the Satellites I loved Dan's song I Love You Period. Used to play it, sometimes sing (for) and sometimes with this girl who was way outta my league I had a crush on. Never did get any.

Dan was such a treat to see on the Outlaw Country Cruises. He jumped on stage with Sarah Borges and killed it. She turned around and was flabbergasted. I know it's hope beyond hope that he comes out of retirement on the boat for vacation and sits in on a set or three.

The Georgia Satellites were one of the greatest Rock N Roll bands of all time. They influenced lots of artists that ended up become way bigger and more well known than Dan and the guys. " In the Land of Salvation and Sin" is my favorite record by The Georgia Satellites. It's in my top 5 greatest Rock albums ever. The liner notes of the album mentioned several other bands and artists that the guys liked or had toured with Drivin N Cryin, Ramones, Replacements, The Del Lords, etc. I bought records from all of the band's and artists and they were all great and that helped form my musical tastes to this day.
My favorite Satellites tune? Easy. Red Light. My favorite Satellites show? At the Hideaway in Murfreesboro, TN shortly before there first album was released. Tiny, tiny room with a great opening act, the Blind Farmers from Hell.
