Hello! Thanks for checking out Spring Day! It’s a very beautiful and meaningful song that never came off the Korean Music Charts (Melon). This is why ARMYS call the song Queen. I really really recommend watching the explanation made by Italian ARMY because it’s very insightful! 💜🎗️
The lyrics and MV are different in meaning but still can be linked to each other. Suga and RM wrote the song based on their personal experiences. Like the loss of a friend and watching the leaves fall in the park respectively.
Fans have speculated for years what the MV could be about but it was only in 2020 that we got confirmation from Jin during an interview that it was really about the Ferry: It is about a sad event, but it is also about longing.
The song was written in 2017, a difficult time in Korea. Anyone talking about the Ferry or make any link towards the government could be put on the blacklist in which BTS were put twice for their song Am I Wrong in 2016 and later Spring Day in 2017. Not Today was also released along with Spring Day as they are on the same album. Not only they were blacklisted but they even donated to the families and meet them in person in secret. This could have been hands down, the end of their career. But thankfully, it wasn’t.
This is another reason why BTS is so special.

the reason BTS make the lyrics slightly ambiguous so as to not directly reference the Sewol Ferry tragedy is because it is taboo in Korea! the former president of South Korea had written down names of artists who had sung about it and unfortunately blacklisted them, so they had to make it slightly difficult to understand this song! that's why you might suspect the song is not for the tragedy at 7:16 but it is! if you want to understand more of all the incredible details in this video, you'll see all of the references in a video called "BTS Spring Day explained by Italian Army" :)

I want you all and Army to know that you are valid and you matter. While the lyrics of our queen Spring Day are very much up for interpretation, even Yoongi’s rap was inspired by lost friendship. But yes the MV is a video tribute to these victims and the way the world sometimes treats those that are young and/or powerless. As referenced in the use of a motel with the name Omelas. The book Those Who Walk Away From Omelas, is about a utopian society that exists from the suffering and subsequent death of a child. Also in reference to the Sewol Ferry tragedy where the handling of events lead to over 300+ deaths of children. This was to cover up un-approved and shady modifications to the ferry, too heavy cargo, ineffective Korean leadership within the government and lack of empathy for their youth overall. Their president was impeached because of the handling of this tragedy. And yes, the director of this MV was also blacklisted during this time. The explanation video others are recommending by Italian army is a good video also. Just make sure to pause and read a bit 😊. Borehae guys.

It took years until I could listen to Spring Day regularly. When I watch a new video, I watch without captions the first time to take in the visual & audio fully. I was filled with so much longing my chest hurt. Then Tae sang You know it all, you’re my best friend. Then I was full on sobbing bc I had lost the love of my life of 26 years suddenly. It wasn’t until the pandemic and BTS singing it again bc they missed us, that I was finally able to listen to it often.

Another fantastic reaction video! Spring Day hits us all, right in the feels. 🫂 So much powerful imagery--from Jungkook standing in front of the carousel, frozen in time, while life moves forward around him, to the expression on Jimin's face, to the ending, where they are all together, finally moving forward with their own lives.
The greatest part of the Sewol Ferry tragedy--aside, of course, from the 304 lives lost, 245 of whom were in their teens--was that it was almost entirely preventable. There are some decent documentaries about all of everything that happened during, and after.
I have a hard time with that kinda stuff more so with kids. It just kills me inside. I hate the fact that it was preventable...
My spring Day came when I actually got hold of the lyrics of this song, after 9 long years of unseen depression due to the loss of my 15 yo unique daughter. I lost her about the time (2011) BTS was just being training. I'm 59 now, and yeah, as most of aged ARMY say, I found BTS when I most needed them. This song, with Tears in heaven of Clapton, is my only medicine for healing, as I rejected then and now all forms of medication throughout my depression. I love the boys and also, smile at the thought of my angel laughing at me with the way I'm fangirling around them now. Beautiful reaction there !

RM wrote a song called Am I Wrong? It is a smooth way to address the politic unrest there. Great live on stage. The dance practice is even more awesome! I cried when hearing this story the first time. Made me so angry! Can't imagine what Koreans went through.

The original song was written by Keb Mo in 1994. BTS used a lot of those lyrics, but changed it up for their version. Their cover/version is so good!
It's ok to cry. We all do. Other men reactors do cry too. BTS cries on stage. Army and BTS believes in true emotions and feelings being expressed. It's healthy mental health. I just cried seeing the video again. It's ok to tear up and let it touch your heart and soul. This is one of the main reasons BTS is so popular. They are real. They are real people expressing real emotions. They touch our hearts and soul, and we feel apart of a community that understands compassion and empathy and love. This IS BTS!

I just want to say such a big thank you for showing so much respect to BTS by actually going and researching this song. We all know exactly what the meaning is behind the imagery so cleverly done, as you said - it could not be brought to the attention of the world. I became ARMY in my heart after this song. I heard it about 2 months after my best friend of 23 years took her own life. When Suga raps about wanting to hate them or just erase them so the pain would be less, but then Jimin says it’s impossible to do that, it hit my exact feelings at that time. Then of course, V coming in with the “ you know it all, you’re my best friend “ took me out. Between this one and Lewis Capaldi’s Before You Go, I’m a crying mess. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

It's not the Seoul Ferry disaster. It's the Sewol Ferry disaster. This song is still charting in Korea & everyone knows that it's about the loss of the 250 high school students. You should watch a documentary about it. Gut wrenching. And we ARMYs love seeing new people enjoy the magic that is BTS for the 1st time with each song that is new to them. There are a lot of clues in the video that connect it to the disaster--for example the mountain of clothes & the shoes. I still cry every time I hear it or watch a video. Btw, I really enjoy your videos. I'm an so don't always have a lot of spare time, but will try to check out more of your stuff.

I believe the lyrics have a broader meaning than the MV. While the MV may have images that relate to the tragedy, the lyrics relate to a love lost due to distance or something keeping you from each other.

the thing is while the song can hold any meaning to you personally. its not a theory the families have acknowledged it, many koreans have acknowledged it and while bts did say it directly when asked "is this song about a sad event" they answered "yes this song is about a very sad event but its also about longing" and one of the producers named pdogg said "said this song was written to comfort the society, which then had a gloomy atmosphere." so like they said it without saying it anyone would understand what theyre alluding to when they say sad event or society had a gloomy atmosphere.
as i said the families even came out and said they felt comforted and that their children would love the song. they said they pray for bts ever since bts showed them kindess and risked their careers by not only donating to them when they had little money but also meeting with them back in 2014 which wouldve gotten them on the blacklist had it gotten out at the time. bts and bighit had donated $88,000 when they were still very poor themselves.

I have to say THANK YOU for going into this after actually researching why Spring Day is so important. I think you're the first reactor so far I've watched that's done so and it really shows how much care you put into your videos. There's two videos that are usually watched for the explanation - one is by Bulletproof Vibes and one is by Italian Army. The video by Italian Army is probably the best video explaining the references to the ferry tragedy, but it's also incredibly difficult to watch, as it has actual footage of the events surrounding it, so watch with care.
BTS is well known for having double, sometimes triple meanings to their songs, so yes, it's absolutely possible for this song to have more than one theory!

Our queen. We send love to BTS and the families of the Sewol Tragedy victims. For me when we lost my father in law and mother in law a few years back this song offered me such deep comfort in my grief (I am ok it was just losing both within 5 months of each other). It’s a rock to me for healing but also justice and how to remember anyone lost.
Omelas is one of the most poignant short stories ever written. It’s a parable of corruption and referencing both it and snowpiercer are very intentional. Everything with BTS is but unlike the US a Korean govt black list can really harm you so they pushed things as much or more than they could. So much respect for their integrity.

*Hi, I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but one thing to keep in mind is that BTS is know for that their MV doesn't always represent what the song is about. A lot of times they tell two different stories or both. It's not necessarily the song itself that is about the tragedy, but it is the MV that is. The song typically can have lots of meaning*

The music video and song have some deeper meanings to it one of them is to do with the sinking of the MV Sewol in Korea 476 passengers were on board and 306 died and 250 of them were students of Danwon high school, some bodies have also never been recovered. Also the clothes mountain is a representation of the artwork created by Christian Boltanski which was a monument dedicated to the victims of Shoah.
I did just dive into Italian Armys video on the core meanings of this video. how deep it really goes. It was so shocking to see everything.. It was a hard watch for sure but really helped me bridge that gap in understanding! Theres always more to learn though
BTS has a tendency of creating songs that, with the video, can have multiple meanings. It was written with RM and Suga thinking about specific people from their pasts who are no longer a part of their lives. The video is about the Sewol Ferry disaster. Since 2020, Spring Day has come to represent the separation between BTS and ARMY caused by the pandemic. And, of course, the song means a lot of things to people personally and they are able to relate it to their own lives. All different meanings for one song and it's MV. And this isn't the only BTS song that's like that. Now, I'm going to go watch your reaction to Italian Army's video.

From personal experience, I understand that it's hard to be underpaid in this current world climate. It's hard when you want to have a quality of life but it gets disrupted by greedy individuals. This is effed up but it brought me comfort when I read that some of the crew committed suicide in prison. I'm not really sure if it was guilt or fear of the sentence they had to face but it didn't really matter to me.
I listened to a few of the voicemails some of the students left from the ship to their families telling them they love them. Jesus hell. I can't hear this song without getting teary 😥🙁😥🙁😥

J-Hope and Jimin have always been best friends. Theyve always been roommates even when they moved into a 6 bedroom apartment after they became more famous, they didn’t hesitate to volunteer to share the 6th bedroom even though the others got their own rooms. They travel together and when J-Hope did a solo concert at Lalapalooza, Jimin flew almost 7,000 miles to support his friend. After the concert, J-Hope even had Jimin join him on his V-Live. (FWI: Every time they did an awards show in the states, they were all invited to all the exclusive after parties, but they ALWAYS decline because they want to spend that time doing V-Lives with ARMY. They have never once let us down. Never. They make us better people by example. I have days where I want to throw in the towel because my company and work becomes too much, but Suga once said that when you’re in a funk, just pick one thing you need to do and forget the rest and then when that’s done, pick another and soon you’ll find that you’re out of that funk and have accomplished something, even something small, and that’s progress. One day at a time, one step at a time. His words are and have been in my head for several years. All I have to do is take his advice and things get better. Little by little, step by step. Progress. That’s what’s important. Such simple advice but truly deep wisdom from a boy so young. God I love these boys. (Also, there’s a lot in Spring Day that is lost in translation. I have learned a little Korean and understand the lyrics more. There’s a lyrical explanation out there somewhere and I’d recommend looking it up. Jimin and Jin both play central roles in the MV. I can barely watch this MV without bawling. It’s such a tragedy and I think that this song brought a lot of healing to a lot of the victims survivors. At least I like to think it did/does)

Not only is there a great video with facts about the tragedy...the Italian version is one of the best, but also the a video that explains all the visuals clues and representation of the tragedy When I found. out about this, i was heartbroken. I watched every video out there. The government was so corrupt and insensitive. Some of the children's phones were found with footage of them in their rooms, on their beds, and talking amongst themselves waiting to be rescued. The sad thing is...in that culture..they are taught to obey their elders. They didn't even try to escape even though the ferry was turned on it's side. The children that were rescued were very brave and disobeyed their elders. They understood they HAD to leave their rooms and go above to Live! So the Life Lessons learned are so very deep. Many parents regretted their strict parenting rules. And now wish their children had rebeled and fought to get out! It's so sad. Very sad. But a lesson we can all learn from. Don't let anyone harm you or prevent you from taking care of yourself! Thank you for your effort to do research. And to honor these children by sharing this video. God Bless their families and friends as they still deeply grieve!lļ

@MasterGo89 ok cool. And yes. Any theories you think or feel are valid. The truth is the song wasn't written specifically about the Ferry tragedy. Suga and RM wrote it about their feelings about the members. Then after the tragedy the lyrics seemed to apply, so they dedicated it to the family and friends of the victims.

Hi, thanks for your thoughtful reaction to one of my favorite songs. I cry every time I listen to it. There are references to Snowpiercer and Those Who Walk Away from Omalias, but also to the Sewol Ferry disaster. Did you notice the sound of the ship combined with the sound of the train in the opening scene when V placed his face on the rail? I missed so many details like this until they were pointed out in the explanation video by Italian Army. Since I'm older, many of my relatives and friends have passed or I've just lost touch with them so the song makes me think of them, too.
Oh man. I GOTTA react to that video.. I should have added that in on this video I just didn't think of it. My plan here was to make it an intimate listening experience. With my intro I just wanted to let people know that I did do research because I really want to learn as much as I can...

That bus scene was also recreated at Yet to Come video. Now with much lighter background and feelings. It's like they're saying that we're now fine and we will be okay in the future as well. :)

But when the tragedy happened the lyrics seemed appropriate and applicable to the sadness of the friends and family of the tragedy. Yes, any theory or feelings you have are valid. Art is subjective! The MV does have visuals relating to the tragedy. That is true.

Whenever I hear Queen Spring day I always remember that two students (they were actually couple) where they tied ther wrist with a ribbon and the man give his vest to his girlfriend while saying "If one one of us survive from this let's see each other in the next life." But unfortunately both of them didn't survive 😢😢😢Shemmms! I still have goosebumps whenever I remember that. 😢😢😢...
JK actually represents the teenagers on that tragedy, the train actually represents the ship itself. V in the beginning represents 'death' waiting for that train to arrive. RM represents 'time' Jin represents the 'fate' and the stairs represents all stages of life within that ship. Jhope above the train represents 'life' The celebration inside where they are throwing cake and stuff is the moment that the students are having fun, and thats why RM has the crown its like they are savoring the moment or time.. If you notice where JK on the train and another JK outside the train met their eyes thats when the disaster starts and the pile of clothes where Suga sits representa all of those who unfortunately di3d. Jimin represents the relatives and friends of the students and children. The tap from Jhope (since he represents life) gives Jimin comfort and a reminder that he must go on. The hand signals made by V and Jin (forming square) means that it is time for the stragedy to happen. I know I missed a lot of symbolisms but I hope this helps. 💜 Btw this song is also my comfort song when I lost my father last June 2018 and like the others I also found BTS in the moment I need them the most. I found them last Oct 2019 wherein it was the second birtday of my papa but he is no longer with us. I remember vividly that I am crying in the corner and youtube play this song randomly on that Oct 2019 I don't know who they are that time but when I knew the meaning of this song. It honestly gives me comfort and little by little I was able to move forward. 💜

Hello! Thank you for writing this so first off yes my reactions are all over the place because Im super excited to learn about everything. Im having alot of fun just jumping in and watching with you all. I dont understand the meanings of everything and thats why I enjoy this. I can ask chat I can learn along the way. And yes this one here I did just watch the Italian ARMYS video today actually and this was going to be my deeper reaction. The idea here is that Im new to BTS and please dont think that this has anything to do with money on my end. I really am learning as I go.
