What does a musket really sound like? Reenacting and Reality

  • While it is technically a massive inaccuracy for reenactors to not shoot each other at events, it seems to me that a certain level of modern safety regulations are probably for the best within the hobby. That being said, merely loading our weapons with blank rounds means that rather than firing with a sharp cracking noise, we produce more of a whooshing sound. It is not nearly as intimidating as a round with the paper wadding rammed home, and of course does not even begin to approach the force of a fully loaded piece. So, when out firing some live rounds, I thought it might be appropriate to show off the differences in sound between a 'reenacting round' and an actual shot. -

Every once in a while this video decides to explode on me again, adding another few hundred K to the viewcount. While I love to see it and welcome you all...honestly I have ~no clue~ why it happens! This is a silly video from when I was really just starting youtube as a hobby! But hey, if you're interested in learning more about 18th Century military history, you may like some of my newer work of a much higher quality!
Also to clarify a quick point that many have asked about: When talking about "safety regulations," I was not talking about any firearm laws. Obviously the US has crazy policies (or lack thereof) when it comes to guns and we are definitely *not* more safe than the UK and EU. I was specifically referring to the safety regulations of reenactment events. In the UK, and I've been told in many Continental countries as well, reenactors will use their ramrods, whereas in the US, most reenactment organizations specifically forbid this as not being safe.

I have a video recommendation for you. Do a video that goes into the specifics of equipment and uniform (preferably) of the British one from the American War of Independence. It would for sure help me since I'm trying to put together a uniform, but I'm not totally sure what the specifics of the uniform I need to look nice.

I don't know why it showed up in my stream today; I don't recall seeing any of your videos in my stream before.
It's always wonderful when you stumble across a topic that you had not even wondered about before and find it so interesting.
Also, the presentation was pleasantly straightforward and clear.
Finally, I found your persona to also be very straightforward; lacking in pretension, seemingly not taking yourself too seriously, gentleness, and a hint of humor. All together, a nice combination.
      You have a new subscriber!
(But then, what do I know? You might just be a big jerk...)
PS I assume movies use the safest method, perhaps enhanced with something to make a more impressive flame, and then dub in the real sound?

I mean, the military keeps its guns away from soldiers under lock and key unless they're in a combat zone. While I don't know enough about other nations' militaries for a specific example, I do know that some other nations let their soldiers keep their guns in their possession to varying degrees.

Musket balls don't really stand a chance against modern body armor. They're built for way stronger rounds coming at way faster speeds. @assassinaria 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

I like it, but I feel like it's too forced in this day and age. The vernacular in the 40's and the accent tied together well back then because people without the accent used words such as 'indeed' quite often. We rarely use such words these days and it sounds too forced at this point in time.

    • @grimble4564
      @grimble4564 2 ปีที่แล้ว +44

@@assassinaria fun fact: the transatlantic accent was specifically developed for radio broadcasting because it was meant to be understood by people all over the continent. That's why the enunciation and articulation is so ridiculously heavy. It was never a voice that people spoke in unless they were presenting something through radio or television, so it was pretty much just as forced-sounding to the people in the early 1900s as it is to us because that's exactly what its supposed to be.

Own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as the founding fathers intended.

Articulate means to convay oneself effectively and fluently in speach. I see no reason to think that by omitting the final R in words and using archaic speach patterns allows one to more effectively convay their thoughts verbally. If you look at African American Vernacular English for example it allows speakers to convay their thoughts just as effectively as any other accent. The only difference is style which has more to do with cultural preference than level of articulation and fluency.

For those who aren’t aware, the “crack” of the gunshot comes from two things, the expanding gasses and - more significantly - the round breaking the sound barrier. With a blank, the gasses expand at their normal rate. Black powder is a very slow-burning propellant, so the explosion isn’t hypersonic, thus it sounds like a fire cracker in a tube (which it essentially is).
With the paper, those gasses are compressed, so you get more escaping the muzzle at one time. More gas, more boom. The paper, however, is too light to break the sound barrier and is too soft to resist the immense forces of the expanding gas.
With a ball loaded (from the shot of the table, it looked like he was using a .50 caliber ball) there is the sound of well-compressed gasses as well as the shock of a projectile which is strong enough to resist the tremendous strain of breaking the sound barrier. First of all, lead is much denser than paper (go figure) and thus is able to plug the gasses much more effectively. This combined with the sound of the ball breaking the sound barrier and creating a small sonic boom is what makes the live musket shot the loudest.

I didn't even know this was considered unsafe, as evident by the fact that myself and a few friends went about 50 yards down range of an ACW firing demonstrations and just sort of walked about, without any of the demonstrators or teachers batting an eye. (To be fair, we were fourth graders and that was well over a decade ago.)

Wow he talks so different from what I'm used to here in Texas! The rythm of his speech is most noticeable. Great video my dude keep up the great work!

Classic American Northeastern, "Mid Atlantic." Listen to a BBC broadcast and you will notice the cadence similarity.

Also Texan. It's odd to me but I don't have the back story. Reminds me if a certain cartoon football headed toddler.

Because it's insincere and affected. If this was actually his true voice it would be one thing but even if he chooses to speak this way in general conversation it is clearly by choice and self taught.

Because people don't like anything that may sound any bit more educated than them. Bet if he talked like forrest gump people would love his vids.

"Not nearly enough to really inspire fear in the enemy."
I think that having a bunch of guns pointed at you is probably going to inspire at least a bit of fear.
Still though, this was a pretty good video.

Agree.... well if compare to current standard of war weapon sure it less scary but if back in the day they don't even know how thunder exit and scare even thunder sound...these guns sound just enough to scare the sh*t out of people lmao. no wonder even it isn't hit back in 17th it still make fear into enemy army and could lose moral.
