Prince was such a virtuoso on electric guitar. I kept wishing he'd rock out more on his studio albums, but he seemed to save that mostly for his live shows. But Prince was more than just rock music. He did it all and shined his own brilliant light on all of it. The whole stage is full of musical geniuses in this historical George Harrison tribute.

"Look at his face". That guy standing next to Tom Petty (first vocalist) with the acoustic guitar was George's son Dhanni. The version from The Concert For George from 2 years earlier had many of the same people onstage, and more. The guitarist with the hat, Marc Mann, played the guitar parts and first solo that Eric Clapton played on the Beatles' recording. You should also check out the version from The Concert For George (on Y.Tube), because this one is basically a recreation of that one, except that one has Clapton, McCartney, Ringo, and tons of other people on it.

Jeff also produced George Harrison (of course), Roy Orbison, produced three Petty albums including co-creating the monstrous Full Moon Fever, produced the Beatles, and much more. At one time in the late 1980s, Jeff had three albums in the Top 10.

Prince was an absolutely stellar guitarist, and otherworldly on other instruments as well, but it always bothered me that he had to play a cover song for people to realize this. Anyone with ears could just listen to his material and hear that he was a master guitarist. Perhaps it's because he did so many other things so well that his guitar playing was overlooked. Still, that always bothered me that we validate someone's talent by them playing some cover song and ignore their own original material. Still happens today on the local scene, and I get very annoyed by it as a musician playing original music.

Song was, of course, written by George Harrison. The guitar solo on the White Album was played by his close friend Eric Clapton. Harrison returned the favor on Clapton's song Badge which was recorded with the band Cream. Lots to check out with Cream. When Clapton was in Derek and the Dominoes, he wrote the song Layla about being in love with Harrison's wife Patty (they would later divorce). Clapton would later marry Patty and somehow Eric and George remained close friends till Harrison's death. No doubt, George's religious and spiritual beliefs played a role. He was a pure spirit, to be sure. George's son Dhani - who appears on stage in this video looks and sounds just like his father. Great video. You may want to check out Prince's song Let's Go Crazy (among many others) that feature his guitar work and other talents. Make sure to listen to the full album version with the long spoken intro.

I am so glad you got to hear this. A little aside: Eric Clapton played the lead on While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Harrison played lead on one of Eric Clapton's records. You do need to check out the Traveling Wilburys, they are Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and George Harrison. Handle Me With Care or End Of The Line are good first choices. The percussionist in the back on this video is totally rocking out with his tambourine. I have always loved this song and Prince kicks it up a notch but in a civilized way. I got to spend some time on a Prince tour and I have to tell you, I would be hard pressed to be more impressed by any musician than him. (His guitar tech catches it) In this song his Guitar is weeping because nothing ever changes even if it is obvious. By contract, George was not allowed to have any more than 2 songs per Beatles album. After writing all this, it is nice to have you do the research and confirm my idea about the song. Jeff Healey deserves a look by you as well, if not here, personally. Jeff is blind ( a cancer of the retina), he plays a mean blues guitar and has a beautiful blusey voice. Stevie Ray Vaughn regarded Jeff Healey as one of his heroes. th-cam.com/video/gwgOUzodS6E/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/gIkOaTVu8uM/w-d-xo.html

The Young fellow strumming the acoustic guitar to the right of Tom Petty is Danhi Harrison, George Harrison's son . In a way you can consider this to be a Superband. The aforementioned band (The Traveling Wilbury's) of which Tom Petty was a member also had Jeff Lynn of ELO in it , and George Harrison when alive was a member of the The Traveling Willbury's , as well as legends Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan. They are definitely worth a listen . Princes guitar by the way was caught by a technician just above the stage when he threw it .Something that Prince often did in his shows.

I believe there is another aspect of the "floor needs sweeping" lyric. George's favorite book at the time was Autobiography Of A Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda. This book by the Hindu guru was given to George by Indian sitar master Ravi Shankar, who George was trying to learn the instrument from. George was known to give the book to his friends, such as rock musician Gary Wright. Anyway there is a part of the book where after an experience of cosmic consciousness, Yogananda's guru hands him a broom, and tells him to sweep the veranda they were standing on - to imply that even with such head in the clouds kinds of experiences, you still have to keep your feet on the ground. Since that was such an influential book for Harrison, I think there is probably a connection to the lyric. For some other Harrison Beatles songs referring to Harrison's spiritual beliefs, see "Within You, Without You", where he plays the sitar, (Sgt.Peppers), and "Love You To" (Revolver).

Hi Daniel, thank you! It is also one my favorite Beatles song. I don't know why but George was always a very special person to me. I believe that almost all musicians from that period respected him, not just because of him being so talented player, singer, composer. Take care.

Good call "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is in my Beatles Top 5 (No. 4) and my favorite of George's from that period... I like more of George's solo work than all the other Beatles put together... Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty & Dhani Harrison & and a concert full of top names all showing their love for George, Dhani must be so proud...

Just a few words on this..... Iconic is a good word to describe this little get together by all these artists to honor George Harrison!
While my guitar gently weeps is my favorite Beatles song. Actually it's more George's song.
A lot of people would say "Something" is their favorite by George, but it's the guitar work in Gently Weeps that I love the most......and his voice.....and the lyrics.
It should have been released as a single!

The Beatles studied Transcendental Meditation ("TM") in India under Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (and got him massive publicity in the process). That lasted about a year, and AFAIK they got disillusioned with it and gave it up, but Harrison continued his interest and studies in Eastern spirituality, and that's reflected in a lot of his songs, during and after his time with the Beatles.
