I love dinosaurs. Every good fantasy jungle quest needs dinosaurs. And I absolutely love the modern (more accurate) depiction of the raptors with feathers.
Bonus points for referencing the nephilim❗ also overall an excellent video! Great overview and without spoilers; a lot of fun conjecture as well as good information.
There is clearly a lot of value in this set with the price point. I am now at odds with myself. I have the money for this expansion, but I had decided over the last few days that I was going to save more money and get a custom board instead.. then get this expansion later. We have all of the commercially available expansions up to this point and it would be about a year until we would be ready for this one anyway. But watching your video is causing me to question this change of plans.
This expansion looks pretty awesome in different ways. A lot of interesting plastic, new heroes and the choose your own adventure mechanic! I love the idea of taking paths and unlocking scenarios. Nice.
😅 The cultist subject is imo an answer to question paint/not paint HQ minies. Colour of minis is linked to nature of creature, ready for strength/weakness abilities homerules (or future rules in future expansion). 😜
🎶welcome to the jungle, we've got fun and games, Heroquest is one of them, it's the best you'll ever play🎶 For the spawnlings i'll be using my snake and spider swarm minis from the D&D board games 😁
24:07 - This Giant Ape has more Mind Points than the Elf, who is a Warrior-Caster hero. So it's definitely a smart ape. 30:39 - And the hero can say _"To me, my Raptor"._
I am so using those skulls To mark the spirits of fallen heroes, and if you come back for the loot, that spirit will manifest to try to keep his resting place undisturbed. I imagine it being like playing Oregon trail. If you play through the game again, you’ll find the tombstone for your last adventure.
Smart idea. 😊 I was planning to force players whose hero have fallen to become spirit starting from stairs and moving eaxh turn 1 red dice until they reach the tile where their hero died (where I put the gear tile) to resurect with full BP. 😊
I really like that AH keeps expanding the game elements. We got phase monsters, and now Choose Your Own adventure, plus new keyword skills. This will help keep the game from getting stale, there is nothing wrong with the core mechanics, but if all we got were ROTWR, and KK type expansions everything hinges on the quest stories, if we get a boring quest book, then the whole thing falls apart. So far nothing feels like it doesn't fit HQ thematically rule wise, we've been lucky with that.
I can't wait to get mine! I also follow Nuggets Dungeon Terrain, and I just acquired some of the same mini tiki heads as he used in episodes 148, 149, and 151 to craft some awesome traps, which I will as well to enhance my "Jungles" pack quests!
Thx for the unboxing Ash. A little more than a month away from a release in my country. Can't wait to paint them. But still I have 3 more expansions to play before this one. So I'm not in a hurry.
Skullblights are Undead. Page 49 of the quest book: "These shambling undead beings are animated by the Dread blight. Some are former inhabitants of the jungles, or those who have fallen defending it. They can be destroyed with Holy Water."
With so many expansions now, my biggest problem is if any are playable starting from a clean heros (no previous expansions and upgraded heros). They need to be clear how strong the heros need to be from the get go...
Agree. When I bought up some expansions I did some goggling and nearly every reddit comment said you need to complete the base game first so you're heroes are upgraded. I think at least from the base game buying the shield and helmet is a great move as together they add 2 defend dice. Good luck!

This is going to make the next quest jam very very interesting. I also really like that new statue sculpt. I'm likely going to use that often as I like using decorative pieces in my homebrew quests.
New animal allies beyond just the wolf 👀 my only requests is GM screens for the individual big expansions and loot for animal companions. Otherwise this is such a cool expansion and I want it.
I'm excited for mine to arrive, but my order states that it won't ship until early September but it seems that many folks are getting theirs. Can't wait to dig thru the quest book! I'm currently teaching my niece and nephew to play but we've barely begun the original questbook. It'll be a long time before we can face the Jungles of Delthrak. I do wonder if the classic 4 heroes will be re-examined and given some love in First Light. I've been wrestling with how to improve the Barbarian and the Dwarf without stepping on the toes of other heroes. And while I'm confident in my ability to make rulings, and the potential of homebrew skills I'd prefer something official and (assumedly) professionally playtested.
You can potentially combine enrage and frenzy that would be a deadly combo if the berzerker has I.E 4 body points they can use enrage (which would bring them from 4 Body to 2 thus allowing them to activate the frenzy) attack one monster plus you gain attack dice equal to your missing body points making it very dangerous and then use frenzy its a high risk high reward play imo
Pretty cool. Now that ive seen a great up close look at the expansion. Its still looking pretty good. Still not into the tiles art style but... its fine. :) The minis look awesome. Ive got a couple of homebrew miniatures of the spawnlings ready, i just need to do their cards separating those spawnlings. A card for the Goblin spellcaster done. I'll have another look to see what else could be added. Busy week at work this week, tons of overtime... :) i will try get those finished and uploaded tonight or this morning at some point. :) Awesome as always though. :)
My group stalled out on the last quest of Kellar’s keep. A friend has had health issues that prevent him from hanging out for the past 1.5 years. But I’ve been collecting every set that comes out, we’ll get to it someday, and there is always the possibility of running multiple groups later on. 😊
i think the part i LOVE the most of this expansion - is how it works very similar to fighting fantasy/game books. ‘Choose your own adventure’ style isn’t accurate enough - because of the definite fighting involved in HeroQuest.
I definitely look at this as their "Chult" like expansion BUT that also makes me wish they had went deeper into that and gave us some bigger dinosaurs. I know that the HQ board is sacred but I wouldn't hate having a second board more for outdoor areas or something.
I think there's plenty of room for dinosaurs in THIS version of HeroQuest, as it clearly is a very D&D-style version of that universe. I just kind of imagine we started in a HeroQuest universe that was the Warhammer version, and now we've skipped corporate owners and universes to Avalon Hill's D&D version, a la the Star Trek TNG episode Parallels.
For the spawnling tiles I’m gonna play in like a certain role you just knock them off of you, but we’ll take an extra companion or character who will use as bait to collect all the spying on him or her and then if we need them again, will just kill the spawnlings
While I appreciate giving heroes skills, I’ve got a couple of worries following: - What happened to exisiting heroes like the dwarf or barbarian? Why didn’t they get any skills? - while these skills making the game more interesting, it also dulls the game and makes it even easier. Fully equipped heroes still steamroll everything in their path, while having a vast amount of gold. I wonder, will this render skills eventually useless? - why did classic monsters such as orks, skeletons or Zombies not receive any skills/ diversity in combat? - why was there no random events added while the board is clear of mobs? - why didn’t they add 3d walls / ruins or hedges or overgrowth to block paths?
great questions, and conerns that are warranted. I think the basic answer to the barb/dwarf skillsets is that they wanted to address it by giving us a "barbarian" and "dwarf" that were similar enough to be proxied as such (just give the explorer and berserker cards to the dwarf and barbarian), but different enough so that purists wouldn't feel like their original lineup was "messed with." Most design choices they've made seem to try as hard as possible to cater to as many folks as possible, which I think is reasonable. As to the difficulty aspect, most heroes can clear the base game without too much difficulty, and that's not something that I think needs fixed; I think a more worrisome concern is, won't future expansions be easier to complete? I don't know. The Frozen Horror is still an expansion that can demand the heroes hire a full complement of mercenaries, only to lose them all and possibly one or two of the heroes themselves before the Horror itself is finally put down. It would be really quite difficult to make a one-size-fits-all scaling of difficulty, but they definitely considered making the game easier with the new modes in JoD; hopefully with the next expac, we'll start seeing official modes of play that make the game harder, or tools that Zargon can use to provide more challenge, like the random events you mention.
My Junles box doesn't have the filigrees. It's the standard black with Heroquest Jungles of Delthrak. And AH symbols. Is yours a special one sent by AH for review?
Great unboxing! Love your videos Ash! Did everyone that got it early got it through Amazon? I pre-ordered through Pulse and im thinking i made a rookie mistake.
What was the first completely original work from Avalon Hill? Love the Mighty Max reference one of the toy kits was actually a snake that looked very much like this one lol. Great unboxing as always.
Thanks! I've been calling rise of the dread moon the first full fledged expansion; if we don't count original materials and just campaigns, that honor goes to Spirit Queen's Torment and Prophecy of Telor.
Maybe they went 1x2 on the larger monsters so they could fit in hallways? I get what you mean with the mighty max thing. Im doing the my zargon in a skeletor paint type paint scheme so its not a detriment to me. ;p Looking forward to getting this and the other expansions I haven't grabbed yet. Does anyone have suggestions for transport and storage of game pieces? Its definitely an issue with the older version of the game with the old boxes not holding up great which is mostly what I'm using currently. With the newer ones having the piece inserts maybe something that will accomodate those or the full boxes would be best. Just trying to better organize the stack of boxes it currently is. ;p
I kind of sort of have a maybe solution. *all* of my classic HQ including homebrew is in a box I built myself. I am very close to getting to the point of building my own contemporary HQ box as well. Most of my HQ boxes classic and new are empty and just up for display purposes. It makes for a large box but I like having everything at hand.
My only disappointment is I wish the hero cards had 2 copies of each, for each sex. I planned to use the explorers skills as a teachable, but alas I only have 3 and not 6. Extra dice would have been nice. Otherwise, it was perfection!
oh definitely. I misspoke here and meant this larger Warhammer Quest style of corridor. The corridor tiles we get with the other expacs are also great.
I am kinda not loving some of the outdoors tiles but one cant be pleased about everything all the time . Love the mini’s and most of the stuff i see here. Hope i get mine 4 of september 🥲
I love dinosaurs. Every good fantasy jungle quest needs dinosaurs. And I absolutely love the modern (more accurate) depiction of the raptors with feathers.
I agree. I dig the “Land of the Lost” vibe the dinosaurs bring.

I wish they added green dice with it . I got mine yesterday , I was amazed I got before July 26
😅 The cultist subject is imo an answer to question paint/not paint HQ minies. Colour of minis is linked to nature of creature, ready for strength/weakness abilities homerules (or future rules in future expansion). 😜
As always, great video, unboxing, and informative! Also, always like the humor you do as well! 😂
Ahhhhhhaaa raptors opening doors I am immediately taken back to that scene in Jurassic park the original in the kitchen lol
Mighty Max is easily one of the top 5 best 90s toon hands down! Along with Batman, Gargoyles, Exo Squad and XMen IMO
thanks for posting this fan unboxing! good details like the cultist artwork being slightly different

Honestly, I don't mind Quest 1 being named "Welcome to the Jungle", it's a very natural title with a wink wink reference that isn't too too overt.

Extra 25 must be because these Dwarves are the only Heroes that can actually count. So the bank back in town can't take advantage of them
Growing up with X1 Isle of Dread means for me, dinosaurs are definitely allowed in my fantasy worlds!
Thx for the unboxing Ash.
A little more than a month away from a release in my country.

You got this up FAST! I just got mine yesterday evening.
This game is for ages 41+ and it's all thanks to the Saturday morning cartoons.
New animal allies beyond just the wolf 👀 my only requests is GM screens for the individual big expansions and loot for animal companions. Otherwise this is such a cool expansion and I want it.
Great video as always Ash. I have this pre ordered though hasbro plus hopefully I get it soon

I haven't paid much attention since the re-release a couple years ago. Looks like I have a bunch of expansions to catch up with.
Can’t wait to get this for myself

Just needs a Poison Ivy character! Like, Heroclix meets Heroquest ✨️
Not a fan of the art style of the minis or the outdoor tiles. But am a fan of your review!

I really hope they come out with the wizards of Morcar
We all hope that.
Great review! Kind of like HeroQuest's version of Lost Ruins of Arnak.
You get me at Pet-snake! Im definitely buying this!
Looks fantastic, we have to wait so i hear another month or so. But shall be adding it to ny collection.
Wow, this looks like a must-get!
Shipping almost 2 months earlier than promised :). Just dawned on me no new dice :(
Excellent video Ash. Wonderful humour as usual. 😂

12:50 that's totally Zargon

That sucks the tiles aren't as heavy as the others., but I won't complain if they keep pumping out new expansions
Did you forget about the flavour text? How about the difficulty of the Quests?
Thanx for the content.
Thanks for posting, I hate them adding Dino’s. The ape seems like a good size but the spider and snake should of been bigger.
Looks good, thx for the great and informative Video and even funny ;-)

No, I had to order it. Interesting
@@AshQuest
Indeed.
I just view animal companions like mercanaries
except you pay them in scooby-snacks
Pre ordered it day one, but Europe doesn't get it until september 😪
Can we get a video with you suggesting different house rule variations for the three possible Druid forms we have now to our hands?
Grande has grazie x il video!!!👍
Hey Ash. How about a ranking video of your favorite Heroquest sculpts?
HeroQuest does Jumanji.
Great unboxing! Love your videos Ash! Did everyone that got it early got it through Amazon? I pre-ordered through Pulse and im thinking i made a rookie mistake.
A CHRIS PRATT MINI? SIR! HOW DARE YOU! We need a Muldoon mini. Sod Pratt.
They should of called it a Great Serpent

Man I love gobos
I wish they'd introduced trolls
12:25 To call noodles this thick spaghetti is so very american and...
Creepypasta.
Hey Ash I haven’t played HQ for
About 30 years, keen to check out the First Light and this pack.
What is the other AH original expansion?
Rise of the Dreadmoon 😊
Thank you!
4:50 ROLL SKULLS!!
I'm home.
Ty!
Wasn't there a corridor tile in Frozen Horror??
oh definitely. I misspoke here and meant this larger Warhammer Quest style of corridor. The corridor tiles we get with the other expacs are also great.
How did you get it already? on Hasbro it says its available from September 4th :O, Gratz on the early unboxing :)
There is still a month to go before it arrives in Spain 😭
What really sucks is my family? And I needed some money about six years ago and I sold my original heroes quest and I didn't want it back
5:44 don't cross the streams
Yo how uget this so quick
Not being contraire just for the sake of it but I'm not loving this. It just doesn't excite me. Raptors and King Kong. Meh.
Hey no shame in that. This particular theme doesn't seem to be everyone's cup of tea
I am kinda not loving some of the outdoors tiles but one cant be pleased about everything all the time . Love the mini’s and most of the stuff i see here. Hope i get mine 4 of september 🥲
