I love that their second duel ("Diva Off") showcased a male ballad. I feel like, throughout the show, Kurt was always trying hard to sing with the girls because he didn't fit in with the guys, which set him up to fail. While he IS a countertenor, his vocal strength definitely wasn't suited to a female Broadway belter like Defying Gravity. Having him win with a male ballad seemed like the perfect conclusion to his confidence issues. As a rather effeminate gay man myself, it felt like I was watching Kurt be rewarded for embracing himself as he is, rather than what stereotypes dictated he "should" be. ❤️
What I love about this performance is that you can see the evolution of the character. Rachel has always been huge on the facial expression, the movement of the head, the had rising which, at times, can help bring emotion to a theatrical performance. Kurt was the same at the beginning but his time with the Warblers taught him to let his voice do the work. Some times, less is so much more.
Kurt put so much heart into defying gravity. He sung that song knowing he wouldn’t have it as a solo, but gave his best performance anyway. Chris Colfer was phenomenal for both, with no professional training.
@@uhuhuh1966 .....thats cause he intentionally threw it away because he didnt want to embarass his dad in front of the school by playing the part of the girl......homophobia problems u know.

Kurt at 4:41: (The quiet "Bring him home" before the finale) Kurt's voice always induces a little gasp at the beauty of his voice. Kurt wins. No question.
kurt won both. he purposely lost the first one to save his dad the embarrassment of having his son sing a song meant for a woman. he said this in the 4th season
Bella Swan mmmm makes me mad when people say this. Rachel is belting and keeping a g flat, an extremely hard note to hold, for one performance is impressive. Both times Kurt used a falsetto while Rachel was belting, something much harder to do. Rachel won both times. Don’t say Kurt won just because you don’t like Rachel, even though she’s the only one in the glee club that cared enough to be a star.🤦🏼♂️
@@drewkalsto2646 Come on, obviously we all have have a bias here.... You're bias is Rachel and mine is Kurt, just because I admire him so much, I admire kurt as much as the person playing him.
Actually it is about the technique here, hon. If she can belt the whole song while staying on key, on pitch, and manage to sound smooth, she’s beating him by a thousand points, of which she did in both diva offs. Kurt is my favorite character, but as a singer, Rachel’s part was better.
Jaden he threw it on purpose, if you watched the full series 1-6 youd find out in season 4, he said he threw it so he can save his dad the embarrassment, and rachel challenged him to another diva off to decide who wins
Kurt won the second, Rachel definitely won the first (even if he hadn't thrown it to her). Also, someone said the second was a song sung by a woman but Bring Him Home was sung by Jean Val Jean in Les Mis, a male character.

I’m a boy and I once did a cover of both Rachael and Kurt’s rendition of defying gravity trying my best to copy their voices and oddly enough singing like Rachael was easier for me because when I tried to sing like Kurt it hurts my throat a little

I feel like Rachel would’ve still won the first one even if Kurt didn’t tank that note just because I feel like Defying Gravity doesn’t suit his voice very well.
His transitions are smoother and less breathy. Rachel puts a lot of depth and emotion into her voice, but sometimes that clouds what should be a clean and more pure tone.
Kurt was for sure better at defying gravity. the sont suited him so much better in it's lyrics. The second one... bring him home, I actually felt Rachel was better at. she puts more emotion in and almost cries. I do love the way they blended the two voices almost as if it was one person, rather than a "duet".

I adore his character but he’s not the great tenor that the show acts like he is, it’s always weak unsupported falsetto
