Storm Dennis: severe flooding continues in England and Wales

  • Flooding in parts of England and Wales has been described as "unprecedented" - but scientists say the bleak reality is that climate change will lead to more erratic weather.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
The government said today it can't protect everybody. So is a new approach to the climate emergency needed?
We’ve spent the day with families evacuated from their homes, who are now counting the cost - financial and emotional.

There you go, using common sense, brains, facts, and historical evidence to come to a rational conclusion!
      Shame on you!
You KNOW that the Enviro-Whacko Fanatics will continue to demand that our Biosphere STOP operating as it has for BILLIONS of YEARS, because they are here, and they want the weather and the environment to operate as it has for the last 100 years......their elitism, narcissism, and arrogance knows no bounds....and reality be damned for it!
You realize that if you were to offer your real world solution openly, in public, say in a pub, or at a town hall, you would actually find yourself under threat of physical violence from the Enviro-Whacko Fantatics?
No foolin! These people's elevators (Lifts) don't go all the way to the top, and there's a small number of those within that larger group, who're missing several bricks from a full load, who believe that people like you and I need to be 're-educated' in 'special camps' so we can't "infect others" with our 'lunacy'.
      It's become that bad!

But I do realize. Villages that were around in Viking times (800 AD-1200 AD) knew how streams, creeks, and rivers were affected by storms, heavy rains, and regular rains.
      Those folks were NO DUMMIES!
They lived, and died, by what they knew of the land, the waterways, and the forests! They were a LOT closer to 'nature' than 99% of folks living today!
I just happen to respect them and give them credit for knowing their own lands, waterways, and weather, than you do!
People today are PRESUMPTIVE, ARROGANT, ELITIST, and NARCISSISTIC! They DEMAND things that have NO basis in reality, nor do they understand how to compromise with nature in real world terms.
Want to build down on a flood plain? No problem, the Govt. will bail us out when it floods!
No more freebies for people who refuse to accept reality as it is, rather than how they'd like it to be!
Cheers from the Oil Patch in Central WY, USA

this is a national disaster, and as a nation we are all responsible. these areas that are all suseptable to flooding is the result of our continued abuse of our countries resources, and our endless building and loss off matural flood plains, even after the water has gone, our troubles have only just begun, i couldnt help but notice how much sediment i saw in the flood water today, even more nutriants removed from our already struggling soils. this needs to be a wake up call. and making more flood deffenses is not the answer. changing the way we use our lands is the only sustainable solution, this continued spending on flood deffences and other development is only exaserbating the problem, as the water has to go somewhere and when you raise your flood deffences then all your doing is raising the water level down streem, meaning by the time you get to the lower levels yourll end up needing rediculessly high deffences to ensure against flooding, and thats just rediculess. we need to change our ways, big time, and we need to start yesterday.......

The UK has to wake up and do something for the environment first. Spend less money to some silly things and make funding available for so many things. We paid tax after tax and kept hearing less funding for so many things. Whole country has to change the way you live.

Now we can hold our own politicians to account and have our own courts deal with things rather than the ECJ overturning decisions. Our farmers have been making noises for years and now either Westminster does it’s job or they are out ! No more hiding and no more policies that don’t suit our islands needs compared to the mainland. I think they would tax the air we breath if they could !

Council tax, tv licences are ridiculous. I don't own the house but I still paid the council tax...Less funding for education, police departments, emergency services... Where all the tax money goes. I don't think only Brexit will help. Plus somebody has to do something about environment. The whole world is changing. I bought fruit in a plastic tray cover with plastic. They say work pays but it doesn’t when you look at all they tax you before you get your wages then after on everything you buy and household bills. I bet your 10 times better off now your home again x

why did the commentator say that people say the warnings could have been clearer and then at 6.54 say they were living on a flood plain?, how do some people have to be to need a clear warning that your house is likely to flood if you are known to be living on a FLOOD PLAIN. Its an awful tragedy, and the government should have done a damn sight more over the last ten years but we've known for at least ten years that the weather is getting worse and the flood each years are getting higher.

      @nasa1985 4 ปีที่แล้ว

georgina preston. People are always directing blame away from themselves. No on likes to be the reason behind their own unhappiness. The fact is they did have plenty of warning, but people chose to believe that it won’t be as bad as they are being told it’ll be. The reporter even said the lady woke up to find water in her living room. Not only did she not care enough to prepare for evacuation, she decided to go to fucking sleep. The people at fault here are those who signed the plans for the houses to be built on flood plains. No doubt it’s down to money cutting and saving where they can. Building houses on solid higher ground costs way more than building on a flood plain that no one cares about.

It's awful that women passed away. It really is.
I can't help with seeing all this just wonder about all other living things outside the human race dealing with these disasters as well. How many homes and beings dead in the animal world and they haven't done anything to deserve this. We all use oil, we all drive cars, we all sit on dead trees and fill our bins with pieces of them daily. We created plastic not mother nature and now she's just showing us actions have consequences.

A lot more trees needed and now we are out of the EU we can dredge rivers again.
As a comment below concrete gardens, lack of grass verges and trees has had a massive impact as well as building on every bit of natural land we have because Britain is full !

Wendy Singleton Oh please, stop lying. Britain isn’t full. Even the Netherlands with a 225 people per square km more than Britain, isn’t full. And dredging your rivers forbidden by EU? And the UK couldn’t dredge the rivers because of the EU? I don’t believe it, in NL the rivers, canals and ditches have to be dredged every year. It’s part of our waterboard policy for rain water storage and drainage. The UK just needs good flood defenses, like the Netherlands, not the bandaid solutions they have now. The UK just don’t wanna put (enough) money aside for it. Watermanagement costs a lot of money, but it saves more in the end. And it reduces the number of victims of flooding. It’s a simple calculation. I pay about €150 a year for waterboard tax. It’s one of the taxes I pay with more ease than others.

    • @Britsishmum7695
      @Britsishmum7695 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

P Constructor wow I pay £1500 per year for water and yes it was Eu policy not to dredge as we once did. And yes the U.K. is full we are building on everything to cope with the demand but now we’ve left the dictatorship we can stop the un monitored flow of human traffic. I couldn’t comment on the Netherlands because I don’t live there so it’s none of my business..........

      Really Katie?
I hate to burst your bubble, but weather science is NOT new. Something else that is not new, is the understanding of TOPOGRAPHY and how that interacts with Waterways!
The Romans of Antiquity understood flooding, which is clearly apparent in the massive Public Works during the reigns of various Roman Dictators (Marius, Sulla, Julius Caesar) and Roman Emperors (Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius). Governments have understood flooding for more than 3000 years in most of Europe, and certain in China, and Japan.
Per the line from Ecclesiastes; "There is nothing new under the sun."
The folks in the 1920's KNEW they were building on flood plains, they KNEW they would flood, but guess what, they figured that people would CLEAN UP, REBUILD, and get back on with their lives: LIFE IS NOT SAFE!
Modern politics and culture being what they are: UTTERLY MINDLESS, far too many people want life to be 100% safe, cozy, and free of problems.
Newsflash, Life nor the Real World does not operate that way!
The solution to the heaviest flooded areas is simple and straight forward: RELOCATE those towns to HIGHER GROUND. Remove all of the existing structures, implement channel ways for the quicker flow of water during flood, construct waterway Electrical Turbine Generators to take advantage of the excess flows, and plant heavy duty vegetation known to combat ground erosion during flooding!
I said this myself after New Orleans got submerged for the billionth time: the entire city is BELOW Sea Level!
Whack it all down, and MOVE the entire city; those who don't want to go are ON THEIR OWN!
No more public money for the folks who want to 'live dangerously'.
Relocate to Higher Ground and get on with the business of life.
Cheers from the Oil Patch in Central WY, USA
