fun fact about SS1 contract, the M16 actually beats FN FNC and the other rifle when the Indonesia armed force conduct the trial to replace the BM59, but since the license production for M16 requires importing a lot of parts from the U.S, the armed force choose the FNC because FN are very generous with the license production, including the production machine and such. for a country that want as much as production done inside the border, the FN FNC is no brainer.

Pretty much the same reason why the AUG was chosen over the M16 in Australia. According to the documents I’ve read, the ADF wanted the M16, but with a few changes, short stroke piston and a few other changes, and to be able to be completely manufactured in Australia. Colt said no, so they denied the contract.

@@MellowFellowOfYellow in my personal experience, again just mine, if you're going to blast 55 gr, fmj-bt is a better choice for that bullet weight. Great video! Interesting that you mention that shortening the rifle is complicated and/or problematic. It is. I am Swedish police officer and our now defunct special auxiliary force (Särskilda Beredskapspolisen) which were an anti-commando unit (read Spetsnaz) used a shortened semi-auto only AK5 version painted black rather than green called AK5P (P for Polis). They were notoriously unreliable because of the shortened barrel. They never got the gas system to run smooth - So much that they were almost all cut up when the force was disbanded. There are very, very few left today of the ca 1500 AK5P made. I know of two.

Good episode. Great shooting with an older model rifle with M193 type ammo. I stayed away from the RARE types and upgraded to a M16A1 type rifle for duty use (our first patrol rifles were .30-30 Winchesters). This was when we were using irons. The two range flip sights did there job. I had (have) the three power Colt scope and that did cause great job at improving the capability of the sight system. The original lower was upgraded later to the Stag 3G with improved optic types. Thanks for the video.

A very interesting fact is that with the SS1 and SS2 rifles, Indonesia became the overall champion in consecutive AASAM (Australian Army Skills at Arms Meeting) shooting championships.
In 2015, the TNI once again demonstrated its prowess in the eyes of the Army personnel participating in AASAM. At that time, the TNI AD managed to get 30 medals out of the 50 gold medals up for grabs. Because the difference in medal winnings was so striking, the Australian committee wanted to dismantle the weapons used by the Indonesian Army contingent when taking part in the AASAM competition. Not only Australia, the United States also protested and asked for the same thing.
Apart from Indonesia, they also won the shooting championship in the ASEAN Armies Rifle Meet (AARM) competition.

The difference between SS1 and OG FNC is the fire selector and the handguards. The fire selector is changed in order to make the switch from M16A1 into SS1 much easier. But, for the SS2 (the product improvement of SS1) fire selector actually reverted back to the original FNC fire selector.
This is just a hypothesis. I think the reason why they reverted back to the original FNC fire selector is because SS1 is having issues with parts breakages, especially on its fire control group.

I would rather say it is fairly heavily modified compared to the original FN FNC. The first version had e.g different handguards, sights, large trigger guard (so that you can fire with gloves on during winter conditions), removal of 3-round burst selector and magazines.
Then the C version is quite far from the original FNC:
      Increased reliability (much less stoppage)
Barrel shortened to 350 mm (13.8 in). FNC 450mm/17.7in
Weight reduced to 3.8 kg (8.38 lb). Just barely lighter than the FNC
MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail system at the top and bottom of the hand guard
      Adjustable buttstock
Foldable emergency iron sights (for ranges up to 300 m)
      Automatic bolt catch
      Ambidextrous selector levers
      Translucent 30-round plastic box magazines
New slimmer pistol grip at a different angle (similar to the one on Ksp 90)
Modified hand guard with cut outs for pressure switches and cables on the right and left side
Forward vertical grip at 6 o'clock position (detachable)
      New prong-type flash suppressor
      Tactical sling (nylon)
Fire selector on both sides of the rifle.
With that said...even though i am very familiar (as a swedish soldier) with the weapon i completely agree with Henrys assessment in the video. No matter how you see it, and no matter how much you modify it, it is still a fairly old weapon.
It competed against the M16A1, Steyer AUG, AR 18, SIG 540 and that kind of weapons. I have fired many of the same era weapons and overall i would say that FN FNC is probably in the middle of the pack.
Swedes is currently exchanging several various weapon systems. E.g the AK-5 (and other weapons) will be exchanged with weapons from Sako (5.56, 7.62 and .338 Lapua Magnum).

    @deadmeat8754 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I've always loved the FNC. It's a fun rifle to shoot and is reliable AF. Dinging the FNC for a lack of modularity and modernization is really just obtuse. As Harry noted, the FNC was intended to compete against the M16A1 of four decades ago, not the GWOT generation of combat rifle systems. The FNC is a Time Capsule from an era with different standards and expectations.
Few FNC were imported and it's unlikely AK5 and SS1 will ever be exported to the US civilian market, even as kits. None of the countries which adopted the FNC have a large base of civilian private firearms enthusiasts, or thousands of independent LE agencies with full procurement authority to push innovations like the United States does. The M16/M4 family have always benefited from innovations driven by the very large civilian and LE user base. Had the FNC been adopted by a US military branch, it is almost a certainty that it would have seen advanced development over the past four decades. Instead, it should be appreciated within the context of its own era and contemporaries.
Thanks to 9-Hole reviews for profiling the FN FNC. Thanks to Harry for showing what the FNC is capable of even in base form. Love the channel! +1

@@realtalk6195 I think it is different from the Czech's 7.62x45 mm, the Pindad 7.62x45 is more like a pistol round with the cartridge's length similar to a rifle cartridge.

This brings me back 30 years with my 15 months in the Swedish national service (KB @ Ing2 in Eksjö). Haven’t shoot a huge variety of assault rifles, but I kind of liked my AK5.

I recalled during some expo the Indonesian military have SS1 and OG FN FNC on display (both are with removed firing pin).
IIRC original FN FNC felt having so much better & finer production quality and operate much smoother when racking the charging handle compared to Pindad SS1 version.
I did recalled SS1 have vertical pattern grip similar to M16 while FNC is horizontal pattern with nicer feels on the plastic.

Love the videos. I think it would be interesting if you guys got together with Rob Ski, Veronica, and Ula over at Vintage Rifle Shooters Club and did some shooting and talking. How about something a little modern that you all could take out past 1000 + yds. Josh and Ula could run the cameras and spot, while Henry, Rob, and Veronica shot. Then it would be great to switch it up and see Josh and Ula shoot out to some distance. Maybe with a RMAD or an AI and some good modern FFP glass.

Always wanted and lusted for an FNC. I fondled them at my favorite gun shop, but lacked the $ to make it happen.
On my first viewing of HEAT, I too wondered where an FNC would be the choice of the top cop. Even at the time the movie was filmed, that rifle belonged - well protected in a vault.
Awesome to see it then though, abd especially in your video with the commentary.

I only have limited trigger time on the FNC, but it was a delight to shoot. Even in full auto, it was extremely easy to control and make hits. I actually tjought the semi accuracy was close to an M16A1 (at least out to 100 meters, which was as far as I could take it), and it was slightly more controllable on full auto, IMO.
Injustvreally regret the fact that people fogured out the FNC RDIAS fits the SCAR, because the price on the RDIAS shot through the roof right as I was getting ready to bite on an FNC and an RDIAS. 😂

Indonesia did upgrade the fnc/ss 1 to ss2 from v1-v7 don't know much more than that though, also pindad recently producing ar type rifle so it would be very interesting if it being adopted by the Indonesian. Most Indonesian doesn't have access to these kind of tool except military, law enforcement, custom etc. Very rarely common people own a legal firearm. Obtaining firearm licence require a ton of money and work only a few willing to pay that kind of money along with all the test required.

On a serious note the FNC was a very good rifle for its time (came out in 1979) the only onther rfiles that I could think of during the cold war years that were head and shoulders better were the Steyr AUG and the Sig 550 series ... The FAL and its little brother FNC would prob be next in line after those 2 in my opinion ... The thing that really holds the FNC back in modern times is the chungus girth and uneeded weight ...
