Jo, let me share with you a small victory I had today as well. I'm a bk amputee as well since May, 2019 and have had my prosthetic since late October. In the last few weeks my residual leg has finally accepted my prosthetic leg and so I've been able to do more and more with my crossfit training, walking, and just living in general. I am still walking with a cane but am slowly walking on my own little by little. Today I accompanied my 8 y.o. son to the dentist and had to wait outside while he had a cavity filled. When he was done, I was invited inside to pick him up and pay for the appointment. They then told me how much they enjoyed my son and how he was such a trooper and even gave me a Target gift card for him plus a loose tooth that they extracted free of charge. In all the excitement, we walked out of there and then joined my wife who was in the car and subsequently did some house hunting in a nearby neighborhood. We then got home and I did a few chores when all of a sudden I realized that I had forgotten my cane at the dentist office and had been walking without it for at least two hours without even noticing it. I laughed with my wife as we celebrated this small victory. I still want my cane back as it is a nice wooden one but maybe I'll now have the confidence to leave it behind for a whole day...we'll see. Yup, we need to celebrate these small victories in this unique journey!

Rather than getting frustrated learn to solve the issues. Even after 47 years I have issues that pop up and I need to fix.
I have even used duct tape to as a makeshift strap to hold my leg on. Which helped me win a "most creative use of duct tape" contest.
I always carry an Allen wrench so I can tighten or adjust my leg on the fly. Duct tape can also make for a good temporary patch for your suction sleeve. It will work long enough to get to your prothetist.

There is a real lesson in this sort of thinking. When you suffer a setback it can be very helpful to take step back, evaluate the situation, accept what you can't to and realise what you can do.
It's easy to say. I know from my own experience that when I am full of energy I tend to see the possibilities much easier than when I am tired, physically or emotionally.
We often have more options available to us than we realise because we are all bound by our habits and routines.
It requires more of us to think outside the proverbial box. There is a whole field about it in social science called Institutionalism

That’s so lovely of Zach. You could have used a ferrier coupler makes it super easy to switch without having to tweak the alignment or wear down the screw heads but thanks to zach you don’t need to... Zach is a true leg-end (amp joke) PS, the pit of doom mood that sets in when our prosthetics are not right is completely normal. Listening to your body is so important especially if there’s a niggle with the leg it’s best not to push through (could lead to not being able to wear your leg for a week) and to try find alternatives. This is as you said all part of acceptance and we all go thru it. This is a huge part of the rollercoaster of the first 2 years of becoming an amputee. You’re getting there Jo and that sparkle is growing 🤗🥰😍

Jo, there is no such thing as a small victory. I once knew someone who 30 years out of becoming an a/k amputee (my supervisor’s boss) who had a major rant at work about the government not giving him enough for losing his leg. He lost it during WWII at the age of 18. He received 100% pension for himself, his wife and any of his children that went to school up to the age of 25 without getting married or into a common-law relationship, all his prosthetics were paid for 100%, a mortgage payment of $25.00 per month (curtesy of something called the Veterans’ Land Act) said mortgage you never wanted to pay off. He was also gainfully employed at a well paying job and coached kids hockey. The pension was tax free a definite mega plus. One of the employees that were at my level essentially told him where to find sympathy in the dictionary and gave him the finger figuratively as he would not have gone any further had he still had both legs. In the late 70’s - 80’s the inflation rate was quite high and mortgage interest rates were as high as 25% or more. Btw, we all worked for the government department responsible for the pension.

I think you are a profile in courage. I don't know that I would have dealt with this anywhere near as well as you have. I was watching a rider I follow in Instagram and TikTok, and she was talking about another rider who had recently lost her leg. The injured rider replied to an encouraging comment, paraphrasing, thanks for your good wishes, I've received several mean comments about how I lost my leg. I was just shocked and pretty pissed.

This is huge! I am so proud of you Jo. Acceptance is one of the hardest things to overcome. This win doesn’t mean you might not ever feel that anger and resentment again, but if and when you do, you can always go back to this and remind yourself that you *have* won. You are bigger than your leg. I’m so happy you shared this. People who do not suffer from struggles with depression/PTSD cannot ever know the sense of accomplishment that comes with these gains. The more you share, the more the world gets it.

Jo, Maybe I missed it or don't remember if you addressed it. Have you ever tried a pin lock? My wife loves hers. It sure makes on and off easy. sleeve on, socket on, maybe 10 seconds of standing as the excess fluid leaves her leg to get the first click, then off she goes. No bulky suction sleeve over it all. Being willing to spend those 10-15 seconds standing as the fluid leaves means no shrinker and maybe only 1 sock layer during the day.

Since I have been a left BK amputee for the past 14 years I know your frustrations but take it from me you have to keep a positive outlook. It will always get better. As for your leg not feeling right I know the feeling and often it is usually where I have put the leg on just a little bit twisted some times a little as 1/16th of a turn will fix the problem. So stay positive.

It is actually a huge thing to be able to stop that anger and just be able to say ok let's do something else. That's a huge achievement mentally and emotionally and you should be proud of yourself for being about to hit that milestone in that day. Yes you will still have days you can't get to that point but the more you are able to celebrate the days you don't allow yourself to go dark the less often you will go to that angry place.

I feel this with my mental health. I have been doing a lot the past year towards healing from trauma. Over a year or two ago my therapist asked me where I saw myself in five years and I had no answer. She then changed the question to where I would LIKE to be. I mentioned the apartment I wanted, and how I would like a dog for a therapy animal. Along with having a job I like, and a nice partner. I have been feeling down for months but I just realized that I achieved 2 of my goals already! While they aren’t the specific goals I mentioned I moved into an apartment I love and I now have a lovely therapy cat named Lettie. The goals changed a bit but my real meaning behind them was met. Glad to hear your ups!

I don't know that it's common but, being an amputee it definitely makes sense to say it to me 😊

I think it's said in a slightly joking way. Humour helps people deal with weird things in their life.

Congratulations! Not silly at all. What you've achieved is still a goal for many. Your lovely enthusiasm and joy are exactly what so many need to see. It sends a positive message: you can do this too. Truly. ♥️

I thought you said “bologna amputee” and then you said “meat foot” and it was perfect. 🤣❤️

Always mechanicly adjusting and fiddling around da leg is a recipe for premature wear and failure of parts.

I had the cramp problem also my leg guy just adjusted the inside so when my muscle flexs there is a little more room on my exercise leg. Helped me a ton.

My brain really hears “bologna” amputee every time you say “below knee”and that’s a weird visual

I can soooooo relate!! Being what I refer to as "less than" definitely has its potholes in life. It is super easy to get upset when our disability bits fail us because it can totally trash a day, or a week, or worse! I have to remind myself that this is nothing more than life happening. but, GRRRRRRR!!!

I absolutely understand being bothered by the small things in life. I have a couple of chronic illnesses that all present really miner in me. Most of them are manage by lifestyle changes which sucks. Because it feels like I have to think of a million things in my day to day life. I manage to do most things and am grateful that most things are managed by lifestyle changes but it gets exhausting to think about all the small things every day.

Was it similar when your injured ankle would stop you from doing things? Because that's another way to think about it- how much less does your day get disrupted by limitations versus before? 💖

I had foot surgery 6 weeks ago after being in pain for 3 years. Being non weight bearing has been frustrating, and today was the day I was finally allowed to put weight on my foot and start walking again. It's been a rough day because it's SO much more painful and difficult than I expected. I can't bear weight without assistance. So your video was an encouragement at the right time! It's been a rough year full of disappointments and frustrations, but I know this is temporary. I can't wait to be able to walk without pain for the first time in 3 years.
