I rank this sequence as one of the greatest action sequences ever made. The true magic of Anderson productions is that they had lavished on them all the attention to detail in music, editing, cinematography etc, that live action does. Close your eyes for a moment listening to this and you can see it as a fantastic action sequence in a modern film with real people. Pity the producers of the 2004 abomination didn't understand this.
Arguably, anti-lock braking systems were already installed in aircraft when the series was in production, but nobody outside the aircraft industry knew about them. That being said, the braking sequence that we are shown was something almost everyone watching could identify with.
One of the greatest TV shows ever made...forget the modern CGI remake, THIS is the real Thunderbirds! And for a kids' show it is unbelievably gripping...
+Nuttybott I actually quite enjoyed the remake but the remake can never be as good because it's a rule now in children's Television that no one can die so the stakes will never be as high.
Some of the episodes really were amazing. Like that one where that driver picks up a hitchhiker and then it ends up with the building on fire and then that one with the security vault, I think they may have been the same episode haha
Pure genius. I first saw this in the early 70s, and was hooked. It was back in the day with no video recording, you had to be there on time or miss it! I still get a buzz from that music, its unreal. Back when i was a district nurse, I had a disabled patient who had a ceiling hoist to lift her out of bed and into her wheelchair. She had a recording of the Thunderbirds theme music on a cassette, and would insist we play it as we hoisted her up and across into her "Thunderbird". Poor lady has passed now, but such fun and silly memories of this iconic music.
Ah, that's a lovely story. I have a similar story just not with the Thunderbird's music, I was admitted to the ICU when I was 4 and my dad worked at a company that kept track of basically all theatrical and cultural records, whether it's songs, theatre performances or video recordings for archiving purposes, and as a result made a cassette with songs from a show made in the 60's called "Yes nurse, No nurse!" and featured the every day life of a resting home's citizens, and the songs somehow comforted me (even though I was basically unaware because of how severely ill I was). The nurses however, upon me getting discharged from hospital all mentioned to my parents how they never had a better time working on the ICU because of the title song, having been able to light up the mood a bit even though some of the people there were obviously in bad shape at that moment (including me, obviously). Even though it's in Dutch, this is the intro song: th-cam.com/video/AIjygtdHq7o/w-d-xo.html
This has always been my favorite episode. I'm 23 now and still love it. I was 2 yrs old when I first saw this on VHS when the BBC started airing it in September 1991. Still got the tape from that broadcast.
You don’t want that. It means your plane is powered by a volatile nuclear reactor that could go 100 M-Tons on you. Modern engineering would shake the risk reductions out of that.
Brilliant! Best episode! This was made the year I was born and still at 47 years old is brilliant (got the dvd sets for my boy but he's outgrown them at 9! Don't kids grow up too quickly now? I had SUCH a crush on Virgil.!
I am reminded of a story of a engineer working on the set of Thunderbirds he was standing on a ladder when a man in a suite was standing there watching him and generally looking about, when the guy on the ladder said 'Excuse me can I help you' the man said 'Oh it's alright I work in another part of the studio my name is Barry and I am the man that writes the music. The guy on the ladder nearly fell off. WOW!
Shown my kids everything from 1920 to 2006 films and tv shows from 1950 to 60s. Although they enjoy the old films they prefer modern cgi thunderbirds. I give up!
WAIT,, he said, "airspeed 120 knts" the other says,,,then increase to 105??? Huh? I just caught that and its been over 50 years since I seen this episode,,, I loved it as a kid,,still do,,,forget the technicals
Curious thought. London Tower receives an anonymous tip from the Hood that a bomb has been placed in Fireflash's landing gear. Then International Rescue arrive on their first mission to save Fireflash. I'm amazed no one even suspects International Rescue may have had something to do with planting the bomb just to make their entrance for the first time. I often wonder if anyone was thinking that in the later episode "The Impostors" when International Rescue were framed by criminals posing as them.
Fireflash was the most confusing aircraft of all times, all eras, and all universes (real and imagined). Considering the SR-71 (a real aircraft) could fly at 2,300 mph, it could fly from New York to London in 1hr and 54mins. The Fireflash (imagined here in The Thunderbirds) could fly at 4,500 mph. That being said, it could manage New York to London in an hour (give or take a few minutes). This being the case, the Fireflash had a 'wing lounge' and from memory, a casino. What I noticed as an adult that I didn't notice as a kid was how it was possible to enjoy the lounge and even play roulette and all in what would be a one hour flight. Even if it could manage London to Los Angeles, it would still only be a flight of less than two hours so that still doesn't leave much time for craps and drinks. Even a Trans-Pacific flight (Sydney to Los Angeles say) would be done in about 3½ hours and would leave a little time for a few hands of blackjack and some drinks and hor d'ourves in the lounge before finding one's seat for landing.
Its insane that they didn't think to use real actors... given the fact that these are obviously miniatures the suspense is there.... the story telling is there.
Real actors require full sized sets. Derek Meddings, the special effects director, put some effort into making the models look full sized craft. While Derek Meddings did an amazing body of work for Century 21 Productions, his two crowning achievements are the two James Bond films that he was the special effects director for: "The Spy Who Loved Me" and "Moonraker".
Still one of the best sequence in Thunderbirds ever. Hey, does anyone know if the Thunderbirds episodes are available in their original 25-minute format before Lew Grade told Gerry Anderson to extend the episodes to 50 minutes (or 1 hour if you include the commercial breaks)? Or if anyone has made any fan-made edit videos of the episodes in the 25-minute format? I know only the first several episodes were filmed originally as 25 minutes while scripts for the next few were already completed for the 25-minute slot. But then they had to write and film extra scenes to extend the episodes to 50 minutes. Then I think by halfway through the series, they started writing scripts and filming episodes as 50 minutes.
I don't think they are available. However, a 20 minute audio version of Trapped in the Sky was done for an LP album (I used to own) which had a Captain Scarlet story on side B. It was narrated by the late Shane Rimmer (Scott Tracy) and was just as thrilling as the TV version.
Yes, even my little nephew hardly watches anything else other than Paw Patrol. We even tried showing him the original Thunderbirds and he didn't seem that interested in it. :(
These should have had ABS or he should have removed the pressure from the brake a split second when the wheel was sliding. it would have gained grip on the dry runway immediately and he could have graduate applied more braking pressure.
Don't you think Brains already knew that Abs had flaws and needed to be discounted in respect of fireflash total mass and forward moment in and velocity divided by distance of runway left, times coefficient of friction of secret rubber formula of TB rescue vehicle tires.... Deh....tisk.. 🙄
Bambi from what we later see in Operation Crash-Dive, I doubt it. The crew could escape, but all the passengers would be trapped aboard as the plane sinks to the bottom of the sea.
Watch out when you class class class class class start at Dunkin' Donuts. Get at the room, mom, I'm gonna hate you get it. I really Joey, your message is too long.
I loved this as a kid.. I still love it.. A big kid from down under.. Thanks from NZ 👍🇳🇿

At least _Thunderbirds Are Go!_ was more faithful to the original series.
Agreed, it influenced me in a way I haven't really understood until now
Remember that this was made about 1965.
Superb animation.
Great brakes too.
TroyaE117 not superb animation, supermarionation
Arguably, anti-lock braking systems were already installed in aircraft when the series was in production, but nobody outside the aircraft industry knew about them. That being said, the braking sequence that we are shown was something almost everyone watching could identify with.
This First Episode Blew My Mind in 1967 when i was 10 yrs old.
62 yrs old .............And i still love it
24 and love it too :)

+Nuttybott
I actually quite enjoyed the remake but the remake can never be as good because it's a rule now in children's Television that no one can die so the stakes will never be as high.
Not to mention this looks as real as can be! CGI can never match that..
I wouldn't go so far as to call Thunderbirds a kids' show. It's more of a show for everyone.
Some of the episodes really were amazing. Like that one where that driver picks up a hitchhiker and then it ends up with the building on fire and then that one with the security vault, I think they may have been the same episode haha
Absolutely brilliant.
One of the most memorable Thunderbirds scenes for me.... "lift port wing.... LIFT PORT WING!!"
Cut power!
OK Fireflash reverse thrust.
That is one robust aircraft. Can you imagine any modern aircraft attempting that?
@@shepardbook True, they don't make them like that any more.
Pure genius. I first saw this in the early 70s, and was hooked. It was back in the day with no video recording, you had to be there on time or miss it!

Better not let her go down completely all of a sudden when Virgil says "CUT POWER !" 😄

Absolutely unbelievable. "Jolly good show old boy " perfection. Please god bring it back to tv.
I'm 50 but this particular scene is still pure genius!
The music and the suspence always gives me the shivers. I will always like Thunderbirds :-)
Yeah, although I would've preferred it if they'd played the fast music scoring in full during this sequence instead of just parts of it.
gerry anderson was and always will be a genius , so glad i grew up with this
kevin allcock i didn't grow up with iT but my mom bought during a sale somewhere when i watched the first episode i fell in love
My dad and grand parents brought me and my brother up on this 📺
This has always been my favorite episode.
I'm 23 now and still love it. I was 2 yrs old when I first saw this on VHS when the BBC started airing it in September 1991. Still got the tape from that broadcast.
This episode had me hooked to the series as a kid.
A throwback to innocent times.
Incredible, ahead of its time. Incredibly tense, edge-of-your seat type stuff.
The music at 0:36 comes into my head whenever I'm in a plane that's about to land
Danny62 so relatable
You don’t want that. It means your plane is powered by a volatile nuclear reactor that could go 100 M-Tons on you. Modern engineering would shake the risk reductions out of that.
@BA F1 What do you mean by that? This show is set in 2065, remember...
I remember watching this when it aired, I was about 8...I was HOOKED....
Brilliant piece of cinema. The attention to detail and how the action was shot - genius!
🎬🎬This like a MOVIE on big screen🎞🎞🎞🎞🎥. The best show.
Brilliant! Best episode! This was made the year I was born and still at 47 years old is brilliant (got the dvd sets for my boy but he's outgrown them at 9! Don't kids grow up too quickly now? I had SUCH a crush on Virgil.!
Gerry Anderson was a visionary. We will see his ideas come to life in the future.. Space X is the first start
International Rescue is forever big big dream for the world!!
Don't you think so?
This sequence a million times better than all the Airport films that followed
I remember watching this on tv many years ago.
I think Gerry Anderson was responsible for so many people's careers in aviation. This is why we wanted to smell the JetA1.
Barry Gray's music in all of Gerry Anderson's productions was masterly. Should Anderson be given a posthumous Knighthood? I think so.
Yes, yes & indeed yes!!.
Hear-Here!!
WOW!
Although I'm not a big Thunderbirds fan, This is my favorite episode of the series for many reasons, including this scene!
sounds like the brakes on my old corsa when approaching a roundabout.
Action movies before there were action movies.
Genius.
Der Stunt des Jahrhunderts. Wie haben die das nur hinbekommen? Wenn das schief gegangen wäre. Was für ein Film. Leben die Schauspieler heute och?
First time seeing this as a 5 year old was like a religious experience for me
As a 35 year old it's even better
The best scene ever music and camera work ....F.A.B...
Show de serie 😊😊😊😊
F.A.B. Thunderbirds are Go!
Absolutely awesome!

Man that was intense!
loved the design of the Fireflash .Looked like a massive VC10.
Hold tight Fireflash applying maximum brakes! Classic IR at its best. What a scene so lifelike.
Great tv series 🍩
0:59 - Lift port weight.
I remember this scene being parodied in the manga, "Ah, My Goddess"
my favorite seen!
WAIT,, he said, "airspeed 120 knts" the other says,,,then increase to 105??? Huh? I just caught that and its been over 50 years since I seen this episode,,, I loved it as a kid,,still do,,,forget the technicals
I believe the idea is that Fireflash is decelerating, so by the time it reaches Virgil it will be around 105 knots.
virgil at his best. good rescue
Wow, that 2:05 crashing sound is THAT old. I knew it was in some DVDs around 2000, The Simpsons used it in a car chase, but 1960?? Wicked awesome.
That song and the music reminds me of Sylvester and Tweety mysteries.
Brilliant.
0:19 Correction: 104 FAB
1:16 - Applying brakes.
1:37 - Hold tight, fireflash. Applying maximum brakes.
The actor who was the voice of Scott died today age 89.
bugutwo I’m sorry for the loss
The only thing that's missing is the panic among the passengers ..... but alright. Jolly good show!!!
Iit was in a league of its own the technology wad awesome , old is gold
i love fireflash!!!
My favourite non-International Rescue craft.
Christ that was tense!
The command secrets have blocked up😊
All Jonathan Frakes had to do was remake this episode with real actors and everyone would have been happy
Excellent!!!!
As my older brother always says ' Don't get any better than that!' and it don't!

WERE RUNNING OUT OF RUNWAY!
sooooooooooooo nostalgic
haha yes! still watching now brilliant
Blimey those emergency vehicles are big in comparison to Fireflash 😅
I know it’s trivial, but at 2:44, I wonder how they got those emergency vehicles to move and slowdown. I’m guessing magnets under the set table.

lmao did the Hood duct tape a stick of dynamite to Fireflash?
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Pffft no an atomic bomb 🙄😂😂

RIP Shane Rimmer aka Scott Tracy.
Currently £10 for the entire series on the Apple Store 15.06.2020
Classic!
They obviously didn't have ABS back then.
Nope even though it takes place from 2065 - 2067 but hard to say in 1960s that ABS would become a thing
wow, and hardly a hair out of place!! nice
They repeated this scene in the new animated show; nowhere as good as this original!
No ABS in the future?
Cool video :)
Don't they know skidding takes much longer than braking?
Probably but maximum breaks and no ABS then your tires do lockup
Still one of the best sequence in Thunderbirds ever.

Buy VHS proper old videos, they don't last too long

Still F.A.B.
Now kids have “paw patrol” what on Earth HAPPENED
Yes, even my little nephew hardly watches anything else other than Paw Patrol. We even tried showing him the original Thunderbirds and he didn't seem that interested in it. :(
Lol - could you imagine today's Paw Patrol kids watching Joe 90. 😁
Don't that think last off
Oh my god google change it
better than airport 1975
These should have had ABS or he should have removed the pressure from the brake a split second when the wheel was sliding. it would have gained grip on the dry runway immediately and he could have graduate applied more braking pressure.
did you save the fireflash or did virgil?

phew that was close!
@smiladon12 this music is my fav for thunderbirds

Couldn't they have just done an emergency water landing?
Bambi from what we later see in Operation Crash-Dive, I doubt it. The crew could escape, but all the passengers would be trapped aboard as the plane sinks to the bottom of the sea.

Because it literally breaks the breaks.
All that tech, and yet they don't have anti-lock brakes.
