I adore Niki for his bravery at the very beginning of his career, taking out loans in order to secure a racing seat. It was a massive gamble by any means: if you can't impress, you're financially ruined. He really had to believe in himself and that's the most captivating sign of his unique personality. And he had had a hard time impressing big guys in a team, slowly but steadily dying out after Beltoise's filnal win for them at the 1972 Monaco GP. Very few would have balls to choose a similar journey today. And even fewer would achieve such level of success after a life-altering crash as Niki's one at Nurburgring. I can only think of Schumacher, Hakkinen and maybe Mansell (1987, Suzuka) from F1 elite. And although Graham Hill slipped down the order after recovery from his 1969 crash at Watkins Glen and never achieved anything in F1 again, his legendary win at Le Mans 3 years later earns him a place in this list of post-crash heroes. Super dangerous times back then, but the best ones as well.
first 5 seconds are insane... 20% chance of finishing the race alive...................................................................................
Not insane....idiotic. Dumbest statement ever. The deadliest season ever in F1 was 1958. Drivers killed that season were: Pat O Connor Luigi Musso Peter Collins Lewis Evans There were 11 races that season. Typical grids were about 14 entries, so you had about a 4% chance of dying in a given race that year, or a 96% chance of making it through the race alive. 20% of living through the race is just a moronic statement. You would be out of drivers after half a season.
Very good video - Niki was one of the best. BUT... at the beginning you state that F1 drivers have only a 20% chance of making it to the end of a race- we all know that is incorrect. I think, maybe you meant they have a 20% of NOT making it? (I think that's a line Niki says in RUSH)
