    Lock bumping can be a quick and effective way to get a lock open. You can typically thwart these techniques with one simple change and that is adding zero lift pins. Zero lift pins are keypins that naturally sit at the shearline and they do a great job at preventing lock picking and lock bumping.
    Zero lift pins are easily overset during single pin picking and during lock bumping they prevent the plug from turning because they are too tall.
    The example I used in this video was on a Kwikset lock. Kwikset locks typically come with keypin lengths 1-6 and the zero lift pin is a 7. A Kwikset bump key comes cut to the maximal depth of 6 for each key pin. When you insert the bump key into the lock with zero lift pins, that keypin will be overset and the lock will not be able to e opened.
    Being able to implement this is as easy as changing out 1 keypin and having a new key made.
    This technique can be overcome by making a bumpkey cut to the zero lift pins height or if known which chamber the zero lift keypin is in, you can file that part of the bump key down.
    This is a quick and effective way to increase your security and I hope it helps!

    Great tip! I used schlage F series drivers as T pins. As long as the core has construction holes, and put them pointed down with a wafer so with the key it works great and when picked it drops into the construction holes.
    And locks up the lock.
    Yeah it disables the lock, but I can enter in another way and fix it from inside. But ultimately it's just another way to secure a Kwikset.

      I saw that video and what that does when a pick/bump is tried it makes the lock permanently in operable meaning you can't even use a key to get in afterwards, not sure how you get in or get it off but it sounds like more trouble in the end for the owner!

      @@tweetiebird Howdy,
      Well as long as the other commenter didn't pick all my locks then I go in the back door and then take the lock apart and pop the cap from the bible and then free up the t-pins.
      So not for the non lock person.
      But it might mean a call to a locksmith and that is much better than a burglary.
      Hope this helps

    i did that same thing in 2004 when i saw my first bumping video. altho instead of putting the set pin in one i put it in number 4 chamber. works great. also i used a five pin lock. with a number 6 pin in chamber four.. that way when you use a 5 depth bump key that pin goes above the shear line.same thing as you have.

    An extra low cut in position 1 would make this key more susceptible to breaking at that spot, especially since it makes the key harder to get in and out of the keyway. Another location may work better in the long run. This technique could also be applied to many other locks but with the same risk. As long as you can find a pin that reaches the sheer line and can file down that position of the key to match, it should work just fine.

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I picked posistion 1 because it makes it so easy to overset and also I happened to already have a key with a 6 cut there so I only needed to file a little bit.
      I think putting the 7 cut in 4 followed by a short keypin in 5 would make a tough pick and maybe stabilize the key more like you said.
      Thanks for the input!

  • @flux6504
    @flux6504 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    A key (lol) bit of information here is that way back when bump keys weren't made commercially, the key was(at least where I'm from) referred to as just a "777" key, the term "bump" became common a couple years after it became commonplace in a pickers toolkit.
    I find it odd that you'd never have seen a bump key cut down to 7, since this used to be the single most common bump key.

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing and yes you do have a fair point. A proper bump key should be cut down to the maximal depth like the uncommon 7 depth on Kwikset. For whatever reason, I have ran into a few sets of bump keys for Kwikset which did not do that.
      Either way, thank you for sharing your input and perspective! :)

  • @firefly24601
    @firefly24601 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I’ve noticed that with Schlage and Kwikset keyways you can see what length the first pin is by just looking into the front keyway opening. Would there be any advantage to putting the 7 pin in the second or third position instead? Might make it more difficult for a picker to determine the problem, and slightly more pick resistant.

    • @AlbertLebel
      @AlbertLebel 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree in a way. I guess his point is valid but I'm sure you can move that gate keeper. It's a sacrifice of one pin to stop a rapid entry technique

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think if you moved it into position 4 and put a really short keypin in 5 that could make for an increased challenge when it comes to SPP.
      This isn't a full proof method but it is a cool idea on how one simple change can really make a difference on stopping one technique of rapid entry.

  • @gerardwalker564
    @gerardwalker564 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Loren Koehler your right, that's why number 4 chamber is better. you can not see the pin and attempt to bypass it. and i find it only works for bumping. top of the key way tension and a very deep hook gets you in. unless you use security pins in the other chambers that take longer to pick opened.

    What is the length (measurement) of the zero lift pin #7? Since kwikset pins increases by increments of .023" and #6 is .287" , would #7 then be .310" for zero lift pin length?

    Will this modification work on the Kwikset Smartkey Locks? Would it interfere with the Smartkey reset capability?

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The smart key lock uses a completely different locking mechanism and this would not be applicable to that. I would not expect you would be able to bump open one anyway. That does not make them secure though because you can turn the core open with a key blank rather easily

      charles klein Check out my video [81] on how to take a lock apart and put it back together th-cam.com/video/Z6nEHMbOoHk/w-d-xo.html
      What you are doing is putting a keypin in that is too tall for a bump key which will make it not work. For Kwikset it is the #7 keypin and you can buy it at CLK Supply (online).
      Once installed, you would need to make a new key since the key pins have changed. You can bring your original key down to the lock Smith and tell them you out a #7 keypin in whatever slot you put it in.
      If you want to take the a step further lock picking lawyer did a video on adding t pins to a Kwikset to make it pick resistant if it has construction keying holes

    • @charlesklein7232
      @charlesklein7232 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      what you are saying is VERY interesting! "Construction" key holes? are you saying "GRUB" screw in set screws? how do you do that do you drill a hole or do they just screw in are they SELF threading! what is the #7 keypin i thought it only had 6 pins? i have not done your video [81] thank you very much! i have seen lock pick lawyer on the "t" pins replacing.

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      charles klein You need to buy a tool to add the threading but you take the cap of the lock and screw threading into the top of the bible and screw in grub screws. It makes top fitting easier when you go to reset the lock.
      I can show you the specific tools if you'd like.
