  • 175 years ago, Frederick Douglass arrived in Ireland. Just seven years after his escape from slavery he wrote his memoir and hoped to connect to a nation's people who supported his cause. That legacy is something his family still celebrates. Michelle Miller reports.

    Frederick Douglass was so taken aback by how vehemently against Irish-americans were to the abolishment of slavery, given their history of being opressed in the States, only for him to go to Ireland and be treated such with a level of respect and sympathy by the native irish that would never have been given to him by Irish-Americans. I understand why Irish people feel the need to tell Irish-Americans that they are not Irish.

    • @johnbattle7518

      Only problem with that stamens idle the Irish Americans were actually Irish. They immigrated to the US and during the riots of 1863 targeted blacks.

      @@johnbattle7518 thats true but what they are trying to say is when they emigrated, in order to integrate into society they were often forced to change some of their values. Obviously not in all cases but unfortunately it did happen.

    Thanks Michelle Miller - lovely reporting. I think all this is become better known in Ireland today. Important that it is known - with racial hate gone global we need reminders like this. Not without 'incidents' but so far no racist, no Far Right party doing 'well' in Ireland but there is need for 'eternal vigilance'. Muhammad Ali had one great grandfather born in the West of Ireland -it was only later in life he understood it was a consensual relationship and was welcomed warmly to a place where he had ancestral roots. On a humorous footnote, I read somewhere in the old days a union between an Italian and Irish immigrant was considered an inter-racial marriage!

    • @laylaruan
      @laylaruan 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@matthewatwood8641 And indentured servitude is distinct from chattel slavery. They are different forms of labour exploitation, with vastly different life implications. It was not indefinite, not inherited as a point of law. And indentured servitude was wretched, and part of a wider oppression -- we don't need to go to equate it to slavery to strengthen the claim to recognition; that claim is strong enough as it is.
      This is not the thing to fuss over. I've never heard anyone acknowledge that distinction because they were trying to deny the historical oppression of the Irish. But what I have seen is this idea being used to try and diminish the grievances of black Americans today, and I'm not fond of being used like that. I'm not accusing you of this, but it's a reason why I'm especially wary of the equivalence being made. It's already bad just for being factually wrong, but even worse now that random Americans on InfoWars have got ahold of it

      I suggest that you look up how he treated his first wife Anna Douglas..they didn’t mention that while he was overseas with his WHYT mistresses she was supporting the family back home financially and that she was the person who smuggled him through slavery with her money. Her brought his mistresses to live in the home with them and they made fun of her; he ended up marrying one one of the WHYT mistresses after his wife died.

    Unfortunately Ireland did not stay the same. It is just as racist as every other country now. Nostalgia is nice but Ireland and all countries are deeply deeply oppressed right now and we should really be talking about HOW to do what he did. Fight Oppression and not sit around loving an Ireland that doesn't exist anymore. (From: a woman who is Irish and has melanin in her skin.)

      Little news flash. You say it's just as racist as every other country. You know it's been like that since the start of mankind right? Never going get away from racism but we need to end the negativity racism. No one should be judged on the color of their skin but as the content of their character. Come on I played bball for my whole life and there was so many times I'd be at the park and I would watch others get picked infront of me, who were not nearly as good just because they was black. Racism goes both ways . I been called white boy on the court so many times, most I'm saying 99 percent of people I have hooped with have respect. They be like damn white boy can play. That's cool I don't take offense but when someone says white boy cant handle me or white boy ain't got no game I find that offensive because if I said what he said to me but Instead of white said black boy I had been labeled a racist. Again most I have played with they show respect since I know how to play but there is always one knucklehead in a group. Just like we always going have one bad cop even though most are good, which I don't think most cops are good it's just an example. I think most cops are bullies among other things and I would say 1 out of every 6 cops is a good person
