For me, the fun of KSP is not in flying missions, but in designing not just mission profiles, but working logistics systems and infrastructure. Using KSP as a flight simulator can be fun, but for me the real value of KSP is in the P.
Yeah I got bored of the flight aspect after a couple hundred hours. Now I use MechJeb, Davon Supply and Routine Mission Manager to simulate a lot of the boring stuff and focus on program management.
What I like with kOS is that if I have an unmanned rocket and I need it to do something and I don't know if I will have control over, I can develop a program that will fly the rocket, do what needs done, and in the case of a failure somewhere, adjust as it needs to.
I could see room for MechJeb in a super-realistic game if it actually cost funds and time to develop the "software" for each mission, and have risk of bugs...
I've used K-OS and it is fun, but a bit unwieldy for a single player to use to run realistic missions in RSS. I'm talking about simulating the software development process, not porting it wholesale into the game.
Just a note the Bell X-1 was not slung underneath the wing of a B-29 is was loaded into a modified bomb bay of a B-50, which was a B-29 with more powerful engines and a larger tail-plane, same with the X-2. X-3 through X-6 were jet aircraft with standard takeoff and landing procedures, X-6 was a B-36 that was supposed to be modified to test a first-gen lightweight nuclear reactor but was never built. X-7 through -9 were missile prototypes that were carried under the wings of an aircraft with the X-7 actually being a prototype of the AQM-60 Kingfisher which was in turn a prototype for the D-12 cruise missile, it also provided useful data for the design of Ramjets and cruise missiles. X-10 was an unmanned super sonic aircraft capable of normal take off and landing. X-11 and X-12 were Atlas missile test beds. X-13 was a tail-sitting VTOL. X-14 was a manned jet aircraft to test vectored thrust and had standard takeoff and landing. The X-15 was slung under the wing of a B-52, specifically two B-52's operated by Nasa known as "The High and Mighty One" and "Balls 8". There are more Aircraft/Rockets in this series and as you can see they were launched using a variety of methods and it should also be noted that they were built out of order, good Example of this is X-4 being built and flown in '48 and X-2 and X-3 in '52.

BEARDY, LISTEN TO ME! When you are landing you are carrying waaaaay too much speed! Find your plane's stall speed, add ten percent to it and that's your landing speed. Deploy flaps early, get to your landing speed about a kilometer and a half from the *near end* of your runway and *keep your power on*. Use the engine to determine your speed and make your approach shallow. Aim to land between the runway numbers. If it's a glider then know your stall speed. Optimal glide path is ten percent more, at a rough guess. Aim between the runway numbers. Carry ten percent extra speed over stall, plus two percent for a buffer. Deploy flaps at one quarter the runway's length from end of said runway. Never ever stretch your glide, you'll stall at zero feet and die. Better to set down on rough terrain than to stall over any terrain.
