    I actually bought an F100 back in the day brand new and I still have it. I picked up an F5 about two years ago used at a camera store for 400 that looks brand new and works like a charm. Great video Az.

    Good on you for standing behind your work, especially when people get unpleasant.
    And about you getting rid your Fuji stuff- I went the opposite way, selling of my Nikon (digital) stuff for Fuji. I kept all my Nikon film gear though, including the F100.
    I agree with you 100% on enjoying shooting with mechanical SLRs as opposed to automatic, but the results are hard to deny, especially if you need to move quick.

    As the creator of an image, you have the right to interpret that image any way you like. BTW, I loved the image the instant I saw it through my "innocent eyes" (meaning I had no clue what the image was about). Keep up the fine work.

    Having just bought an F100, I came here for your review, but having worked for over seven years on research into the abuse of children at Indian Residential Schools (that was the technical term for them, so I mean no offense by using that particular language), I was really struck by the image you shared. IMHO it is a powerful piece of art, and as such my interpretation will be different from yours, which will be different from everyone else's. That's the beautiful and challenging thing about art, and that image is both beautiful and challenging. Thank you for sharing it, and for shedding light on the legacy of those places. It is so important that mine will be amongst the last generation of Canadians to be raised in ignorance of them and their legacy.

      Thank you for your thoughtful comment. As this was a couple years ago now I have since made it a point to educate myself on the history of indigenous peoples. I leaned to that topic while I was upgrading and have considered indigenous studies. I have also read several books on our history and that of the US. This photo now hangs in my living room and it invokes a lot of different emotions. I'm very proud of it.

    The Nikon F100 is the best film camera to me. It is so good I had 4 of them at one time now I don’t even have one, I gave up film a few years ago but recently I have got Mack into it so I need to go get me another one or two or three and maybe four again.

    I recently bought an F100 because of the fully automatic features. I believe it is the best of both the SLR and DSLR world. I also love the fact that I can use my Tamron G2 lenses that I purchased for my D850.

    I agree, after a lot of different cameras my preferred "level" of cameras are advanced film cameras and classic digital: Nikon F100, F6, D700 and the Canon 5D Classic. The F6 and the D700 feel very similar in use. The D700 and 5D have made me cut down on expenses to film.

    I like the shot a lot. Also I kept my F100 over my FM2. sold the FM2 for way more than I would have gotten for the F100 and it can take my G lenses like the 105 macro VR.

    It's a fine camera, albeit a huge one. I must admit, i'm often taking my F80 instead the F100, simple because of the weight issue. And it doesn't matter, if the F100 does focus a tad faster its 5 AF points, vs the F80...well, into the end, i like both.

  • @BillSmith1

    I've been rethinking my workflow with both black and white, and colour photography. I love my mechanical SLRs and rangefinders, a large collection of Nikon, Canon FD, Minolta and Olympus OM bodies show that out. That said, I've grown to love my pair of Nikon F4's , F90X's and F100. The 3D Matrix metering just delivers with colour photography, with Kodak's recent price hikes, I want every shot to count. The other bonus with the F90X's, F4 and F100 Azriel as you point out, AA batteries you can get literally anywhere. If your EOS 1 or Elan 7 battery dies and you didnt' pack a spare, you got a paperweight. With Nikon, any drug store, hardware store and gas station will have AA batteries and there are more Shopper's Drug Mart and Home Hardwares in the wild then are camera stores. As for the photo, it tells a very timely and powerful story, well done!

    We both got into the F100 around the same time. I purchased one out of Japan that was mint with original box and accessories. It's been my main 35mm over the last year and I absolutely love it. U like you though I've invested more in the D lenses. I currently have the 35 f/2, the 50 f/1.8, 85 f/1.8 and the 35-70 f/2.8. The build on the 50 leaves a lot to be desired though and I hope to get the 50 1.4g soon.
    I've had a blast with the F100 so far and still consider it a good deal on the used market.

    • @AzrielKnight
      @AzrielKnight  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I watched a review of the 50 1.8 v the 1.4 and their conclusion was the 1.8 was actually sharper. Just a heads up if you don't need it for extra low light.

    • @briansavage932
      @briansavage932 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AzrielKnight I'm up in the air about it. I have a 50 1.4 for every other film camera I own, and I also do concert photography fairly often. It's really the only time I shoot wide open. When shooting outdoor portraits I normally stop down a stop or so to sharpen things up. For most other things I tend to shoot between 5.6 and f/11 depending on the depth of the scene. So, the only reason I'm wide open is for low light situations where I can't use flash.
      I wonder if the extra little bit of aperture is worth it?
      You now have me questioning things. I'm going to do some more research. Whose review(s) did you find most helpful?

    I've used (owned) a full cross-section of Nikon bodies from a 1976 Nikkormat FT2 on through my F100. A virtue of the F100 is that it will fully use any Nikon lens made from Non-AI Nikkors I had modified by Nikon to be AI compatible up to (not including) the new Z Mount lenses. It has more functions than I'll ever bother to learn to use. I like my F3 and old 'Mat FT3, or my FG for that matter, but I keep the F100 in my "to go" kit. (Glad to hear that you can still get repair parts and service on the F100, although I put a second body away in storage to guard against failure.)

      I do not think P lenses work on an F100 - even older (pro/sumer) DSLR requires firmware upgrade to able to do that.

    • @randallstewart175
      @randallstewart175 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelrasmussen3347 There are so few P lenses that I didn't think of that. I suspect (but do not know for sure) that there is no issue with the F100 and P lenses, since they come from the same era of development. I have not located any information on the point, but I would not infer any issue based on later digital/P-lens chip compatibility issue.

    Every image can be interpreted. Images don't really need an explanation. Maybe from the photographers perspective or maybe an assignment which portrays a certain mood.After that it's really up to the viewers. Attacking a person for capturing a specific image really shouldn't happen...Love the images..

    • @vtavares00
      @vtavares00 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This. Photographs are not controversial. They are merely the capturing of a moment of time on a light sensitive medium - film in this case. It just exists. It’s the interpretation of the photograph, by the photographer, if they add an interpretation, or the viewer, if they perceive an interpretation, that makes it “controversial”.

    • @AzrielKnight
      @AzrielKnight  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure I 100% agree with this. Have you seen the work of Bruce Gilden?

    • @vtavares00
      @vtavares00 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AzrielKnight it’s complicated, I guess. With Bruce’s work, is it a problem with the photo, or how it was taken, and the way the photographer is going about taking it?
      With your photo, if people didn’t know the history it represents in Canada and what happened to the church in the background, then it’s just a really nice photo, right?
      Now we are entering ethical and philosophical territory. I just like taking nice pics.

    Beautiful photo and print, and very interesting to hear about the Nikon F100.
    I basically have the same setup with several different lenses, that I use on both my film SLR's and my DSLR but with Canon EOS cameras and EF lenses.
    However, I am expecting my very first Nikon SLR to arrive tomorrow - a Nikon EL with a 50mm f1.4 lens. If that lens is in good condition, I'm gonna get a more modern camera body - probably an F90x with an MB-10 battery grip, but there is also a very tempting F4 with an MB-21 battery grip for sale at one of my preferred camera stores, so I have to decide how I want to approach shooting with Nikon SLR's. I do like all the dials on the F4 though, so that might end up being the decisive factor for me. Either way, I see more Nikon glass in my future...

    • @AzrielKnight
      @AzrielKnight  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For awhile I was using a fusion Canon setup too. A 5D Mii and a 30V. I ended up selling most of my Canon gear and going Fuji. I might have gone back to Canon, if it weren't for Nikon's lens compatibility, and my love for the f100.

    • @NPJensen
      @NPJensen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AzrielKnight I get the appeal of the Nikon lenses - especially now that the f/1.4 50mm lens and the Nikomat EL camera, I mentioned yesterday has arrived. Almost 50 years old with lots of cosmetic patina, but buttery smooth focus and aperture rings and beautiful glass. I'll have to get that Nikon F4 with the MB-21 grip and a 28mm or 35mm lens, a long lens of some kind and who knows what else :-)
