    My guess is the noise is coming from the coupling between the motor and the shaft. Underway with the motor running take a look at the coupling to see if there's a run out condition. You should be able to see with your eye if there is a wobble between the shaft and the motor. It would make sense that if the bottom bolt on the motor was loose it would cause a misalignment between the shaft and motor coupling. Your channel is great fun to watch.

    Hi Mark, from the pictures in your video, it appears that you have grease caps fitted on your stern glands, the trick I was taught was that the grease should be thick -used some old fashion water pump grease and give each grease cap a half turn when you have finished with engines ro presureise the grease and take up the slack so water ingress to a minimum. for ease of access fitted a remote greaser with connecting tube, the greaser had a screw thread so you still gave it half a turn.
    have you got (can you, beg, borrow or - - - ) a dial test indicator which can be positioned on an arm to measure the runout/play or bow in your shaft. that would give uou an accurate assessment of what is happening when you turn the shaft over by hand.

    • @mp6756
      @mp6756 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great suggestion that would be the proper way to diagnose if it is a problem with the shat or perhaps the coupling and for that matter Mark could check the axial alignment of the motor as well by setting up the indicator on the back side of the hydraulic motor to see if it is moving in the mounting position as he suspended a loose lower bolt.

    You are correct about the engine oil, only mineral oils. These are really good basic oils used in heavy working machines, ships etc. If the oil gets black early, refresh with half amount half way, then change all oil when time is up.
    Synthetic oils are good for high power applications - modern cars, planning boats and cold climate. Doesnt do any good in a cruising sailboat, only adding cost and destroying seals.

    Dear Nadiyana and Mark,
    This time we did hear the tapping sound you were talking about veery well but Dick Isn’t sure that it was caused by the engine. You also hear the same sound when the connecting rod to the propeller has run out of the bearings. Maybe it’s wise to check this first before you start the search process with the engine. When an overhaul is properly done it can’t be the engine. We wish you both lots of wisdom in relation to this and wish you as well as your dear family all the happiness of the world plus we send you ❤️ from the Netherlands.
    Best regards,
    Willeke and Dick de Graaff

    Mineral oil for the OM636 is correct! It is not the viscosity, but the size of the chain molecules. Synthetic oil has much shorter chain molecules, and can escape through "smaller cracks" so to speak.

    Regarding knocking sounds on port side:
    The pic at 1:38 is a good place to start.
    The flanged coupling between hydraulic drive and propeller shaft is not very tolerant of any misalignment between the two shafts ( radial, angular or axial). You will probably be better able to observe or hear the offending vibration or knocking while the propeller is engaged at some nominal speed. Most likely the knocking frequency is closely related to shaft rpm. …so will be difficult to observe if just spinning by hand.
    Places most suspect would include propeller shaft keyway, coupling flange bolts , mounting flange for hydraulic drive or shaft bearing in hydraulic drive. ***Be very careful of where you put your fingers or tools while examining a spinning shaft ****. It’s dark and cramped and not very forgiving when under way.
    The small plywood mounting surface is probably serving the function of a flexible mount to deal with any potential misalignment (.not good) …. But, If that’s true , then vibration, water intrusion from bilge and time will exacerbate the problem .
    The shaft seal ( stuffing box) could see some xtra wear from too much vibration, but not a likely cause of the problem.
    A bent propeller shaft could cause similar vibration and alignment “issues” . But you kids would likely have experienced some event recently to make you suspicious.
    Play in the cutlass bearing ( which is relatively far away at the propeller end) can contribute, but save that experiment until you better isolate the problem.
    If your diagnostics lead you to misalignment issues…The mating flanges of the shaft coupling may serve as a convenient datum to quantify misalignment or runout between the two shafts. Separate the two a nominal amount and measure the resulting gaps. The relative amount you need to tighten each bolt to secure the flange will tell you a lot.
    Best of luck.
    …a small price to pay for living in paradise.
    regards,
    -bill

    The thing about old engines doesn't apply to you you have all new gaskets and seals. The life comparison between mineral oil and synthetic oil engines is a telling reason synthetic is significantly extended life with fewer lubricant related failures and fewer oil changes.
    As a diesel mechanic with a half century of experience I'd say it's safe to use synthetic in a fresh rebuilt motor.
    Yoshi agrees with me.
    See when I was young and there was only mobile 1 synthetic and a English synthetic the only companies using it were in extreme north Alaska they used it on the. Alaska pipeline. Synthetic has a much lower gel point than synthetic. Engines start easier in extreme cold than mineral oil engines.
    Other than that. The long life of modern engines is really the best argument for synthetic oil.
    In the old days if a driver got 500,000 miles on a Cummins engine one of the longer life engines . Cummins made a big deal out of it they'd fly the driver and his wife back to the Cummins plant for a tour and they'd present the driver with a plaque for the dash of his truck.
    That's because it was a extreme rarity to get 500,000 miles on a engine .
    A modern diesel that doesn't get a million miles on it had a bad driver . Today a million miles is expected.
    The diesels were redesigned . But I believe the biggest change was switching to synthetic oils.

    • @grahamlongley8298
      @grahamlongley8298 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that you may find that the machining of the piston cylinder bores have something to do with it. Older classics have deliberately( actually left over from steam days) very fine (microscopic) grouves in the bore that holds the mineral oil.This is better for cold starts as the oil is retained in the bore longer & avoids dry cold starting one gets from modern oils. The synthetic is designed for modern bores with more accurately machined smoother bores. It does not stick to the sides of the bore in the same way as the shear action in the oil is different. Modern bores are more "polished" but still have those grooves but less so. Mineral oil deals with sludge differently due to the different detergents.Wildings engine is a low power engine so benefits from an oil designed for that type.

    • @grahamlongley8298
      @grahamlongley8298 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think that you may not understand the difference between a marine auxilliary engine & a vehicle engine. A marine one will never last anything like your road engine simply because of the environment of salt along with the short use from entry & departure from port. My engine has done 5000 hours & the dealer expressed surprise saying that he has Volvo pentas changed after 1500 hours simply due to corrosion & failure to get warm etc . They get full of salt in the supplementary cooling . The oil sits in the engine & the acid in the oil causes corrosion when left.. The rev changes causes oil surge- never happens in a slow reving constant running marine engine that often never runs at full throttle load for long which a diesel really needs to do. Lots of reasons but no way can one expect the life a vehicle engine

    • @timerickson7056
      @timerickson7056 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@grahamlongley8298 you may not understand synthetic creates a better barrier and promotes longer bearing life. @@timerickson7056 Double the engine life did not happen at the same time synthetic oil became available. you have just pointed out that it has been around for years. Longer life came about due to better manufacturing technique since then. ok i heard enough about the shaft what must be done is to prove that the motor coupling is not worn due to miss alignment any miss alignment will cause a number of issues one is the couplings will wear as it rotates round 360deg over time it will get worce and could shear the prop shaft , the couplings may be keywayed and the key is worn and loose on shaft. the motor coupling may be splined and again through miss alignment be worn this coupling will be supported by a bearing and seal both could be worn excessively to find out this the motor needs to be removed from the housing at this point its worth remembering it has been fitted with special bolts through the housing these will come loose due to the vibration of the prop even if it is just a few thou of inch out lose bolting will do this . so before you pull the boat out of the water you need to prove the motor and couplings are in good order and aligned correctly with a feeler blade this can be done flange to flange. 2 thou top botton and sides the stright edge is to see if the couplings are the same at each point north south east west.. it could be a small square bar . so you say a friend at the end i hope hes done this type of engineering ,I have on bigger props than yours 25ton and lifebouts and all the sea cats you have seen on the mersey . tom . hope it goes well. good luck.

    You are right to be using 100% conventional oil. You had me confused calling it Mineral oil (I’ve been out of uk for too long in usa). Nobody uses that term over here . I was thinking you were talking about non-detergent oil used in machinery or possibly that strange Castro’s R racing oil.
    Synthetic oils would be completely wrong for this and most marine engines that often sit for weeks unused. Synthetics are very clever in the way that they don’t break down and are super slippery to get maximum fuel economy but they also drain away from surfaces when the engine is not running over time ,so when you start the engine you’re in a low lubrication situation that is made worse by synthetic oils. And remember starting an engine is the worst thing you can do to it, it’s went all the wear occurs.
    FYI do not disassemble the hydraulic motors that should only ever be done in a very clean environment by somebody who knows what they are doing.
    Cheers Warren

    I’m sure you know this but it didn’t come across in the video, but the cutlass bearing is normally separate from the shaft seal. Depending on a shaft seal some there is a nibble where you put grease in which will reduce the water ingress through the seal. Good luck finding a solution.

    You guys are making great progress, I see you've cleaned the props, did it make any difference to the shaft vibrations? One big barnacle on the prop can make it behave badly.
    I would never take the rocker cover off to fill the oil, too concerned with creating another leak, I've always found that if there is oil on the gasket when refitting more oil will find its way out.
    Wipe both surfaces clean then apply grease or non hardening gasket cement. Find a suitable plastic funnel to use in the filler, keep in wrapped in a clean rag when not in use. Fair winds!

    Would it be safe to put a couple of coats of car wax/polish/sealant on the solar panels? Water would then bead off easily with rain or a hose. Make sure they have a few degrees of slope on them.

    • @islandonlinenews
      @islandonlinenews 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I put rain x on 1/2 my car window. On normal mornings that side would be covered in dew drops while the other side was dry. I’ll never use it again. Probably a bad idea to put it on the panels.

By the way I like your shirt I used to wear shirts like that all the time tropical shirts are pretty cool to wear not so hot in the summer. Anyways thank you for the update stay safe I love you and God bless

    I might suggest that the noise encountered when you are sailing is the propeller rotating.

    • @sailingmoonshadow3169
      @sailingmoonshadow3169 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or an unbalanced prop. I changed to electric propulsion this year and without the noise of the diesel, I can now hear how noisy the prop is! That's another thing to put on the to-do list!

    With regards to your new dipstick, why not ask your guru to measure a dipstick in an engine he has access to. That will make sure your new dipstick is reading the correct level. Other than that keep up the videos. We are still rooting for you to sort the boat out and really enjoy some sailing. Good Luck.

    Great episode. Real life, sometimes things go well other times not so well. You need to keep your props clean & polished else you will lose a knot of speed real quick with a dirty prop. use a fine grade sandpaper to polish them & it will expose the copper & they wont get fouled so fast. you can also put lanolin on them (get Yoshi to round you up a sheep so you can harvest the lanolin from it). Where is our Wildlings song this week?

    • @BreezyRider66
      @BreezyRider66 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The props weren't bad certainly would not lose a knot, they're not made of copper, lanolin would be off after a few minutes of running...

    • @calthorp
      @calthorp 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BreezyRider66 I am a commercial fisherman, been doing that for 45 years, I think I have learnt a little about props in that time. Have you ever had pure sheep's lanolin on your hands & then tried to clean it off? If you really want it to stick well to the prop heat it up before you put the lanolin on it. I was presuming the props are made of bronze which is an alloy of copper & tin both work as an antifoul. if they are aluminium, Well I guess you are somewhat correct, However you will never see a dull prop on any racing boat it will be super smooth & gleaming shiny!

    Hey, maybe all those people anchored in that beautiful bay know something about the weather???
    Try looking at an actual radar picture and tides to work out the best way to go... predicted forecasts are 99% wrong and 100% guaranteed to be horrible sailing if you subscribe to them. You're both smart and diy weather is what is missing along with enough sleep in the planning.
    Dolmas are one of my favorite greek foods and much of it is quite cheap and nonperishable making great cruising cuisine, you are in a Foodie's Paradise... yum, yum!

    Maybe you could try the "remedies" for sale or get sponsored by them and let the rest of us landlubbers know if they work or not. Eating a large bowl of custard before you set sail helps. Especially when you start puking as it lubricates the diced carrots and potato crisps on the way up.
