To be clear, I agree with the assertion that IQ tests do not measure intelligence. However, this video is garbage with regard to explaining with empirical evidence precisely why or how. Rather than giving hard evidence, of how IQ tests do not measure intelligence accurately, they give us a history lesson. The ONLY thing they remotely touch on about *the modern state of the situation* , is that, if you practice the tests, you get a higher IQ, indicating IQ to be merely a measurement of education, rather than intelligence.
It would be better, to bring up actual modern IQ tests, and show specifically where they fail to measure intelligence.

Watching this in 2024, I have to say the biggest misconception is that IQ tests are worthless. Because the new order is to tell everyone you’re special. That’s not the same as saying we’re all the same. There are people genuinely smarter than other people. IQ tests DO have a purpose. To measure how quickly a person can learn and adapt to new information. If you have an IQ of 85, a job where new information has to be absorbed quickly, would be a constant frustration, and sets you up to fail. Doesn’t mean you CAN’T do the job. But it means you might not be able to do it in a successful way. And that should be known going in. There are other jobs, where an IQ that’s 85 135 change the performance outcome one bit. And neither type of job means anything about who you are as a person. It DOES make a difference in where you will flourish.

Interesting video. Many intelligence experts would disagree with some of the views promulgated, though. IQ tests are good at measuring what we generally define as ‘intelligence’: there aren’t multiple intelligences, and different cognitive abilities all correlate with each other. People who do well at verbal reasoning will tend to do well at spatial reasoning, for example. And those same people will tend to perform better at elementary cognitive tasks (ECTs): tests of processing speed, reaction time and inspection time.
In other words, a single, general factor of intelligence (g) underlies performance in different cognitive domains. IQ isn’t a perfect measure of g, but it is the best measure we have. And general intelligence has been linked to numerous desirable outcomes: it’s the best predictor of job performance and occupational status/prestige, a very good predictor of educational achievement, and a good predictor of health and longevity. It’s also a mild predictor of income. And general intelligence predicts desirable life outcomes even at the very top of the intelligence distribution, as shown in the Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth, for instance.

When being assessed for autism, I had to take an IQ test. The questions centered a lot around pattern recognition, verbal skills, and older math skills (some of which I had forgotten, having been graduated for many years from primary school). However, I noticed a stark lack of testing surrounding creativity or adaptability. To be fair, I am not entirely sure when exactly the IQ test ended and when the rest of the screening began, so it is possible that there are tests that I may have conflated. Still, there is nothing that I say could be used to reasonable gauge an extensive profile of what a person's full intellectual capabilities would realistically look like. I am currently majoring in experimental psychology, and ever since high school, I really admired the theories of Robert Sternberg and Howard Gardner, since they offer a far more nuanced perspective on intelligence. Unfortunately with IQ, there are multiple other problems which arise as well. Not only in measuring IQ but in the application.
People from different socioeconomic backgrounds or with certain neurological limitations might not be best accurately reflected by an IQ test in comparison to people who come from more privileged backgrounds. But even more individual circumstances could potentially influence the results. When I had my assessment, for example, it was a couple of days after the spring forward in DST, and I was still adapting to a new circadian rhythm. It is possible that I may have performed differently had I taken the test in ST, though I do not even know what my results even were, seeing that I declined to receive them for ethical reasons. Personally, I think it harms a person to know their IQ score, even if they are skeptical of the method.
However, aside from the mere measurement of IQ, there is the question of whether or not it *should* be measured. Intellectual and developmental disabilities can be identified without the implementation of IQ. Even if by a similar standardized method, the process of attempting to quantify intelligence into a single number has inevitably led to societies such as MENSA developing exclusive memberships for people who meet thresholds above a certain number. It creates a potential issue where some people in a society are deemed more competent, truly "more intelligent", or more "worthy" than others. Some people will use the concept of, "well you can still be good at other things" to dismiss a person as "stupid" if they score lower in an IQ test, which is toxic and harmful. Yes, they can most certainly be good at other things, but that does not mean that said person does not possess intellectual gifts as well.
That said, I appreciate this video. I think it is important to recognize the roots of IQ as something completely independent from intelligence altogether. Sadly, it has become so ingrained into society as being synonymous with intelligence that people use the two interchangeably.

YUP, that's literally every IQ i've seen out there. If you had mad spatial abilities with pattern recognition skills, you will likely perform highly. Whereas if you don't, well.. ya. hence why i DO NOT AGREE with the iq tests that are currently out there. It only serves to the spatial pattern individuals. My examples were not intended to comment on specific things in the video, but to give examples that point to a very different reality then what is described here.
I don't think you are correct about the education thing though. I think education depends on intelligence more than the other way around.
I have listened to what the experts say on various podcast where they have been guests and it's clear that IQ trumps all other predictors. For instance, if you are to employ someone, it has been found that just the IQ score is a better for achieving a successful match than an indepth interview.
The reality encountered by intelligence researchers were so depressing and sad that when many regular people (and actually academics in particular) refused to accept it. There has been alot of coping since then where people come up with lots of ideas that have little to no basis in science to try to ignore a very unpleasent reality. I think this video is a good example. Some of the things it says may be true, but the important thing is not what it say but what it doesn't say. It doesn't give an even remotely balanced picture of the subject.

@@rasmuslernevall6938 ....but my question to you was what was false in the video......anyway, it has been long established that better access to education, increases IQ scores. I don't know what "experts" you're referring to, but podcasts aren't studies and statistics....
I'm also not sure which intelligence researchers you're referring to, but I haven't seen any credible studies from credible researchers that demonstrate a "depressing and sad" reality concerning human intelligence. Most of what I've seen is intelligence researchers showing the opposite. In that same vein, I've never seen an engineer get hired as an engineer without prior training and education, or getting hired as a result of their IQ test.....can you provide me with an example?
Also, what part of the video was false? You didn't answer my question before....

I think it's pretty accurate. Just because some people get offended doesn't mean the test is not accurate haha

Richard Feynman scored 124 on iq test
Yes so he was just above average
A guy who literally cracked putnam math prize at short age
Tons of people get over that score who wouldn’t be able pursue a physics phd
Only dumbasses would even dare to regard it as accurate and think Feynman wasn't that great intellectually
U probs got good score on IQ test i presume. How about you take some upper level math and physics classes and lets see how much you understand from General Relativity etc
      MR accurate

The IQ test is accurate enough and tells us all we need to know. And if you don't believe that, go into the real world and you'll see for yourself.

Then it's also accurate that some peoples IQs increase when they train themselves to be better at them, which then would mean IQ is improvable
