Two Planes Collide Mid-Air, Becoming Stuck | Tales From the Bottle

  • In 1940, after an accidental collision, two planes found themselves lodged together a thousand feet in the air. So what happened to the crew?
    "On 29 September 1940, a mid-air collision occurred over Brocklesby, New South Wales, Australia. The accident was unusual in that the aircraft involved, two Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Avro Ansons of No. 2 Service Flying Training School, remained locked together after colliding, and then landed safely. The collision stopped the engines of the upper Anson, but those of the machine underneath continued to run, allowing the aircraft to keep flying. Both navigators and the pilot of the lower Anson bailed out. The pilot of the upper Anson found that he was able to control the interlocked aircraft with his ailerons and flaps, and made an emergency landing in a nearby paddock. All four crewmen survived the incident, and the upper Anson was repaired and returned to flight service."

    The rather unfortunate and relatively mundane deaths of Leonard and Hugh remind me of Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer; a WW2 ace who piloted a Bf 110 G-4 bomber who throughout the war shot down 121 planes (primarily if not exclusively other bombers if I'm remembering correctly), both he and his two crew members were awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross (with Schnaufer himself eventually getting the Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds), and survived the war with the rank of Major and with his plane preserved in the Imperial War Museum.
    He was then killed in a car crash 5 years later at the ripe old age of 28 while visiting France to buy wine after having managed to revive his family's winery from pretty much non-existance to a reasonably thriving business.

    As a survivor of a highspeed roll-over, where I was "involuntarily" ejected through a window (that's how my attending physician refered to it) I can tell you that in most car wrecks the driver is often the least injured. Just remember, if you get ejected from a car the police have formulas to know how far away parts of you will be found, plus a checklist to make sure they have as much of you as they can find. Well If a raccoon doesn’t steal your toe before the police can retrieve it.
      Also follow the birds. A bridge jumper was found when the police noticed a gathering of seagull’s. This led them to the deceased man. He was missing a good chunk of his brain and an eye all thanks to those birds

      @@LongdownConker in my case the accelerator stuck and we spun out at 80+mph on a highway offramp and then flipped/rolled when the car hit the median. I wasn't wearing my seatbelt (I was 12yo child at the time) and got thrown through the passenger's window on the 3rd roll, breaking both the window and my shoulder in the process. Thankfully I hit the grassy ground surprisingly well. Before my MRI the emergency medics were extremely worried that I had a traumatic brain injury. My head DID swell up pretty bad, but the glass was the worst looking part. I still have facial scars from it, including one on my cheek that can be felt from inside and out, as it went completely through. Watching stiches being done in your face is pretty nerve-wracking especially because the surgeon made no attempt to hide the hook shaped suture needle from view.
      But in many cases the driver has the least injuries because they are held in place better by the steering colum and closer airbag, they are the most likely to be buckled in, and most importantly they usually have the most forwarning before a collision.

    Forest Hill was where my grandfather became a pilot for WW2. He ended up flying the longest surviving Lancaster based on missions flown. He promptly crashed it on takeoff on his second mission. At least it was not shot down. He was stationed at Skellingthorpe.

    The first time we went to Ireland we didn’t know how to pronounce Dun Laoghaire, so the bus conductor didn’t understand right away where we wanted to go. He probably hadn’t encountered many foreigners yet in 1978, which would explain his slightly rude behaviour.

    • @isabellind1292
      @isabellind1292 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the reaction I got (slightly rude) when the Irish piano player asked for requests during a St. Patrick's Day celebration and I asked if he'd play "On the Bonny Bonny Banks of Loch Lomond" and he said "That's not Irish"!!!!!🎹Ooops, sorry!😮

    In regards to those Irish places with unspeakable names, I can just imagine the frustration of a non-Irish speaker who is headed there when asked where he is going. He probably just made angry noises and showed it in writing.
