This is bad ass in 2023 and will be in a hundred years. Finest melting of jazz and Afro Cuban music. The tenor player was smoking, the percussion clean and popping.

"Afro Blue" is a jazz standard composed by Mongo Santamaría. Mongo Santamaria recorded his composition "Afro Blue" in 1959 when playing with the Cal Tjader Sextet. The first recorded performance was on April 20, 1959, at the Sunset Auditorium in Carmel, California, with Santamaría on percussion.
"Mongo Santamaria" (April 7, 1917 - February 1, 2003) was a Cuban percussionist and bandleader who spent most of his career in the United States. Primarily a conga drummer, Santamaría was a leading figure in the pachanga and boogaloo dance crazes of the 1960s. His biggest hit was his rendition of Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man", which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. Also "Afro Blue." From the 1970s, he recorded mainly salsa and Latin jazz, before retiring in the late 1990s. He passed away in Miami due to a heart attack at the age of 86.

Always will remain the best version of this fabulous composition, Had the great pleasure of seeing Mongo way back when at the famous Birdland...Along with Herbie Mann featuring the great Willy Bobo on timbales. NO matter how many covers of Afro, this will not be dethroned!!

Actually it is from John Coltrane to Mongo.
Just like "Watermelon Man" from Herbie Hancock to Mongo.
You may call it you favorite as there are many nice versions.
Gary Burton & Makoto Ozone "Afro Blue"

You still have Cal Tjader, McCoy Tyner All Stars, though McCoy was part of Coltrane's group, Emily Remler,,,,,,,,

    • @stanleydubroca2626

Nope, it is a Mongo Santamaria composition.

    • @casyatbat
      @casyatbat 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@stanleydubroca2626 Thanks, I stand corrected. All of this time, it thought it was a Coltrane composition due to its strong Jazz influence.
I was watching the Colbert Show with Jon Batiste playing Afro Blue a couple of days ago, giving credit to Mongo for the composition, and it kind of through me off, believing Coltrane wrote it.
My thinking (opinion) was reinforced due to how Herbie Hancock was talking about Mongo, when he played "Watermelon" man to Mongo.
      Take a look (listen).
      th-cam.com/video/RzPZvKSdN7g/w-d-xo.html
By the way, I got interested in Mongo, a long time ago when I read that Chick Corea's first professional gig was with Mongo and wanted to hear his early works.
      Later....

Today, such a player would usually be sitting there with the fanciest, matching, exotic wood, top-of-the-line conga set. It's nice to see Mongo leading the band on some raggedy congas with which he's clearly spent long intimate years, and his main drum has an old rim on all sideways.

Mongo Santamaría was a Cuban American jazz percussionist. Ramón "Mongo" Santamaría Rodríguez was born in Havana, Cuba, in a family that valued music and their African heritage.
Mongo means the chief of the tribe. Santamaria grew up in Havana, Cuba.
Santamaría released solo albums, many of which featured Cuban percussion and chanting derived from West African sounds and rhythms. His 1959 composition, “Afro-Blue,” is a jazz standard, recorded by John Coltrane and Dizzy Gillespie, among many others. 1:11
His 1963 hit rendition of Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998.
