  • Today's piece is a study in a shimmering texture, like yesterday's piece, and like my last string quartet. Like yesterday, I use trills to create a shimmer, but this piece adds a bit of quasi-polytonality to the mix.
The central idea of the study is the B major viola melody (with B major trills in the violins) over a G natural pedal. At times, this creates a G lydian effect whenever the viola is on B or C# (while the G# in the 2nd violin hints a subtle extended lydian colour) but the prominent D#s in the viola melody make it clear that even though G is the bass note, it is not the fundamental root.
I quite like the tension this creates; none of the intervals are all that dissonant on their own (with the exception of the G# over G) so it never sounds too harsh or tense. But, it still has a lot of anticipation and expectancy in it, waiting for these opposing ideas to finally reach a resolution, which drives the piece forwards.
As always, these pieces are welcome for anyone and everyone to play! All I ask is that you share it with me, because I'd love to hear it done by live players!

Really outstanding! Is the playback Noteperformer?

Thank you! The playback is actually Dorico's default, using Steinberg's Halion library. It works well for a piece like this since it has dedicated samples for trills, which sound much better than the software generating a trill manually.
