Hello everyone! In this video, I wanna talk about the pros and cons of shooting film or digital when doing street photography. You probably know that I shoot both and I that love my Leica Q as much as my X-Pan or my M6. The experience is quite different but both have something in common and that is the fact that you can have a lot of fun whether you shoot film or digital.
I am also officially announcing my new brand new zine, that will start shipping next week. You can pre-order now, save some money on shipping and be among the first people to receive this awesome zine. Btw... it's even cooler than the Xpan zine. :D

Digital is okay, I just find the cameras to be a bit wonky. I prefer to shoot film for that reason. (Other than the Fuji Cameras)

Personally I am very grateful to the digital format, coz I extensively used it and found it very limiting in terms of getting good texture and tones out of it, so I perfected and fine tuned my technique. Then I switched to film but with all the training I had with the limitations of digital, I felt like I had this powerful medium that makes me focus on the imagery and get a result with beautiful tones, colors and most importantly the soft highlight rolloff.
It might be important to mention that this whole journey was in cinematography and I started with DSLRs, then moved to Arri Alexa and finally film. But I think it perfectly applies to photos as well. Digital in my opinion is the best way to train for film.
And I am so happy that Sir Robin brings out this review in such an unbiased manner. Thank You again for such a great video

Well made video covering the main pros and cons of each medium. I am also using my M6 for street photography. I prefer it over digital for a few reasons not mentioned in your video: silent shutter, inconspicuous look (red dot and camera brand hidden with gaffer tape), and 35 mm film is more forgiving for a bit camera shake or blurriness compared to digital. IMO B&W film looks always better than digital B&W, but this is partially subjective. Tonal grey range is better with B&W film.

I went totally digital several years ago and at the time I thought it was the correct decision but to be honest my creative vision and desire to shoot has never been the same. I have been thinking about going back and doing some film over this last year but I will have to invest into some new gear because I sold all of my film gear. I think film is a much more creative experience with film especially in black and white. I can convert my digital images to monochrome but it’s never the same as Witt my beloved tri-x ☹️☹️☹️.

For traveling nothing beats my Leica M8 with a complete lens setup and a Rolleicord Model I which is super lightweight and compact.
    Before that I shot a Nikon 1 V2 with M lenses and a Leica M5 on trips.
I started photography twenty years ago with a Nikon F2 and a 50mm 1.4 Nikkor which I still own and shoot from time to time then came some Coolpix cameras, Kodak DSLRs based on the Nikon F5, the D3 and the D4. I also got into digital medium format recently with a Hasselblad H3DII-31 and a solid lineup of lenses. When I finally get the film back for my H2 this setup is also completed and great for landscape, flash and macro photography.
Still can‘t stop shooting film :)

Add some grain to a digital image and I doubt I could tell the difference between it and an analogue image, so for me it comes down to the camera. If I want to be super stealthy I'd use my sony rx100 iv because it's tiny and can be sitting next to me on a bench or on a cafe table and I can trigger it with my phone. If I want to shoot film though my first choice is my lomo lca, just set the focus and fire away !

Never had these big battery issues with mirrorless everyone is talking about. It's not like my camera is up to my eye all day and if I switch it on, by the time i raised the camera it's ready, so no reason to keep it on all the time. The only time you have them is when you are filming, but if I'm filming on actual film I will probably only ever be able to afford a few minutes, so needing a few batteries to film on digital isn't that big of an issue. I feel like these complaints mostly stem from people not realizing you can turn your camera off....

Another great video... I have this fascination with a Leica m6. I would love to have/shoot with that camera. I hope to own one, one day. However, for me... because of the reasons why you mentioned (mainly easier to travel with and getting the results quickly so I can adjust on the go) I shoot digital. I absolutely love my Leica Q.

Most people will disagree with me... but I much prefer the M2 to the M6 (I have both). When you hold both of them you can actually feel how much better made the M2 (and M3) is. M6 is great if you shoot 28mm but if you shoot 50mm the framelines are so small. Anyway just my 2 cents if you are thinking of a M6.

Today someone offered me an M10P for my analog MP. Same day, while self developing (important cost savings to justify an already costly hobby), experienced my first loss of two rolls coming out blank (developer likely expired, despite last use being fine) - really sucked! I came to your vlog to try to help sort my mind on if I'm not trading for the M10P for the right reasons. I have the Q as well already, but find it collecting dust when not in vacation high usage mode. But you make really good points in this video. Thanks for that.
Have you really self-developed and scanned for that long of time? I assumed you sent everything to a lab.

    • @therealsirrobin
      @therealsirrobin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Chris! That seems to me like a really good deal. A brand new MP costs less than a used M10P. However, the M10P will go down in value over time while the film MP will rather go up. 😀
Yes, I develop a lot of film myself but lately I also send some stuff to a lab to save up some time. If the rolls were fully blank then it might as well be a different problem but that's just me guessing.

Well pondered look at the whole situation without giving in to pointless elitism. Very nicely done, Robin. I believe digital tricks people into caring about minutiae way more than they ever should. The pixel-peeping, as you mentioned, is a great example, but it gets into everything; people asking about EXIF settings makes my blood boil... But that's not really a problem of digital photography itself, just a problem with beginner photographers and how they try to wrap their heads around the art, first as a mechanical thing, then as an expressive medium. Always worth to keep that in mind.
And the new zine look amazing! Congratulations on it! I'll be placing an order for mine later tonight!

In 2012, I bought my first digital camera, switching to color pictures and until now I have never shoot film. With experience and good settings on lightroom, I can't see the difference between film and digital prints. I'm not running after a maximum of definition and sharpness with digital gear. I'm always putting some grain on lightroom to break the soft render of the digital images. I use the fujifilm color preset (classic chrome) who is really fine. You mentioned the positive aspects of developing film but after years, it take too much time and money to do it. The storage take also a lot of space. And what about the pollution of the water with all the chemical products ? No definitively, I won't come back to film. The limitation on digital camera is the battery. It is all for me but in the same time, in film you need a lot of rolls in your bags when you are travelling. It was really inconvenient to carry.

Film vs digital for Street is mostly down to cost. If you can afford to shoot 4-5 rolls a day, knock yourself out. Otherwise it’s digital

5 rolls a day... that seems like over shooting. If I'm not shooting a model I am lucky if I shoot one roll.

jesse hayes If I remember rightly Moriyama recommended his students shoot 8 rolls a day. Matt Stuart used to shoot 4 rolls a day until he switched to digital (because of cost). Shot counts can easily rack up once you start working a scene (see the Nick Turpin vids for an excellent demonstration of that)

I develop film myself that makes it very affordable. I often come back from a trip with dozens of rolls. 😀

I love film and shoot film every now and again but these days it is too expensive to shoot with film daily.
You realize that the three batteries you take with you for digital can take like 1,000 photos, while you film camera wouldnt need extra batteries it would require 50 rolls of film to take the same number of photos. You would always take at least 3 rolls of film in your bag on an outing so swap the many rolls of film for 3 little batteries. That is one of the worst arguments i ever heard.
Also, film cameras generally don't go up in value unless you got an industry standard medium format camera (mamiya rz or hasselblad) or if you got a 35mm that became very trendy. Like my Yashica t5 is worth something now because its trendy. But then there is my Contax G2, which is still a cult classic loved by many, I couldn't sell it for what i paid for it.
I have a lot of film cameras that actually became almost worthless now because i shot a lot of Fuji pack polaroid, and now that film is done (or you can buy an expired pack for like $50). My TLR medium format cameras are really not worth anything anymore. I sold a leica 35mm camera I had from 15 years ago and i thought I'd get some rent money out of it but it sold for $175 on eBay.
So ya the idea that film cameras hold their value or go up in value is just not true.

Finding film now is too difficult. Also, film is expensive. Film development is expensive. Those are the three main reasons why I would never go back to film. With my digital camera I would have no qualms about shooting ten or twenty shots of one subject. With a film camera I would be seeing dollar signs with every shot. Shooting film would be fun but, also, a luxury.

Not hard to find, simply order online. Developing at home isn't expensive and easy to do. 👌

I hate Film.... i used to take photos only in film because digital had not been invented yet, and it was like learning in super slow motion, you had to wait for the developing of the film and it was not until then that you realized your mistakes, that was 1968, but then many years later the digital cameras came out, and now you can learn photography a lot faster because you can see your mistakes instantly and make the corrections (learn). The other great invention that increased the possibility of creativity to your photos is photoshop and lightroom. I don't understand why so many people are going to film when they have digital cameras that are much better.
I believe that people are creating these romantic stories about film that are just imagination, it's just in their minds.
And about street photography, to take one photo at a time and thinking you are going to capture a good photo of people in motion is like winning the lottery, why make it so difficult, when with digital cameras in burst mode you can take a group of photos and just pick the best one, why do you think photojournalists take so many photos of one person, because they will have a better chance capturing the right face expression by taking many photos of just one person, same with street photography, you only have a split second to take a photo and by the time you put the camera to your eye it's to late.
Digital cameras are far better for street photography than film.

Another excellent video, Robin. Whilst I agree with pretty much all you said, the important and ONLY deciding factor for me is the one you mentioned in passing... aesthetic. Yes, it’s subjective but photography is almost wholly subjective. The only way you’ll ever look back at your pictures is through that extremely highly tuned filter of personal taste. So even given all the inconvenience and ongoing expense, film completely eclipses digital in my eyes and for personal photography they are the only eyes that matter. By the way, you said this video was not about film vs digital but it 100% was... For some reason this has become a taboo subject but I feel when handled fairly as you’ve done it’s a very valid and still interesting conversation. 🍻
