What I hate the most about the current way the Game Awards is set is that the same games get nominated for multiple categories that several other games could have taken.
Also, Lies of P in the RPG category is hilarious. It's like Sifu being in Fighting Games last year.
Honestly I think FFXVI is even more ridiculous to be in the RPG category, its just a straight up action game. I legitimately think Spider-Man 2 is more of an RPG than FFXVI, though they should both be in Action/Adventure.
It's every year like that with RPG nominations. You're very lucky if theres 2 actual RPGs.

It's incredibly ignorant. I get AAA games not being your cup of tea but to dismiss it like that is ridiculously closed minded. The indie genre to some people is absolute dogshit but if they were to speak on it the way you speak on AAA games you would have an aneurysm. Some AAA are bad, obviously, but games like spiderman, gow, rdr2 and GOT are brilliant games that aren't "overrated" bur fully deserve the adoration they get

What NL says is why I never bothered with the first insomniac spiderman until last month or so when It was on deep sale and I decided to give it a shot. It is legitimately a really fun game and far better than any piece of shit spider-man game in the last decade. But granted its still a superhero beat-em-up, and its not even revolutionary in that genre the same way Arkham Asylum was.
Spiderman is fun but the way people hype it up is fucking insane to me. "The web swinging is so amazing blah blah blah" like brother thats one thing, its not worth 70 quid haha

Yeah, Spiderman 2 was good, but people that are screeching at NL to play it on stream have an imperfect understanding of his content
the gameplay is incredibly fun, and that's what is most important to some people. obviously it doesn't do anything revolutionary (maybe the web-swinging). that said the game is just not something for NL at all
Spiderman is far from just a beat em up superhero game. The gameplay is amazing, traversal and combat both fun as hell and the story is top tier. This idea that every single game has to revolutionise gaming is ridiculous and impossible. Especially when so many people let other people's opinions dictate their own

It's damn true that the game awards is just one big advertisement. Not just the trailers but the awards themselves. "Wow look at how great these already high-selling games are, don't you want to be playing the best games of the year?" Like it is fun to watch - I get together with my friends every year to watch it. But it really is just an event mainly designed to make more money for everyone involved. There's a reason why the biggest categories are always mainly comprised of the best-selling AAA games that also had the biggest marketing budgets.
It's pretty shit that unless they're a massive hit like Hades, indies just get shooed into their designated indie box so that big boy publishers get to have the Real Best Game Award for themselves. On the other hand, can you imagine the number of death threats the devs and TGA organizers would receive if a niche indie like Slay the Spire wins GOTY? Reviewers get those simply by giving games a mediocre score.
And before my fellow roguelike enjoyers come in to say StS is not niche, yes it fucking is, it's an indie roguelike deckbuilder. One of the biggest in that category, but still niche.
@@PotionSmeller Like I get the spirit of what you are saying, but indies shouldn't get nominated just because they are indies. They have to have a big impact and stand out like Hollow Knight or Hades did. I hate to say it, just because Indie Games are creative doesn't mean they wind up being good. NL winds up playing a lot of mid as hell Indie Games.

My man is based. If you release a decent big budget game you are highly likely to end up on the game of year nominee list.
Having played Spider-man PS4 and Miles Morales and hearing that 2 is just more of those, I feel like the people calling those GOTY genuinely don't play other things, like those guys who only play FIFA and COD every year. Their entertaining sure but like not the pinnacle of the medium, this year or any year.
To be fair Spider-man 2 is actually way better than the previous 2 insomniac games, but I still don't think it deserves getting nominated for a billion awards.

Spider-Man 2 is my favorite game of the year. Just because it's popular with people outside of the hardcore or indie gaming scenes doesn't mean that's the only people who play and like it..

Problem I have with Spiderman 2 is that it's basically another asset flip from 2018 just with a DLC on top. So basially, something that should've been a DLC. It's the same map, same assets, same textures, upscaled a bit with better hardware. They did the same thing with Miles Morales... it's an asset flip of 2018 with a DLC on top. It's why they have 1-2 year turnarounds. Now they have said Wolverine will be "in the same universe" as Spiderman. I'm assuming that means it's another asset flip of Spiderman 2018 and it'll be out in like 12-18 months.
Insomniac games are fun but they are lazy as fuck cash grabs too.
@@gothenmosph5151 tbh i think you're uninformed. The map is way bigger- has sections of NYC that simply weren't accessible before. It's an "asset flip" insofar as it takes place in the same city as the previous games. The stories of both 2 and Miles Morales are new and well-written. They're "asset flips" if you consider DS3 an asset flip of Dark Souls.

The Game Awards is just a big advertising campaign. The awards themselves mean nothing more than a GAME OF THE YEAR sticker on the store page. Anyone who gets genuinely invested in events like this has been completely played by the machine.

Outer Wilds kinda sucks to watch other people play, tbh, especially on a stream. the game is better as a isolated experience, many moments of the game only work because it makes you feel completely alone and having an audience screeching in chat would 100% kill it.

Baldurs Gate is going to sweep. If it deserves them or not dont care but there's no mystery cause people are in such a frenzy about it why even have other people show up or whatever. Its not even remotely fun for whatever value can be derived from awards.

I mainly like indie games and don't generally like AAA games myself. But 1) no games are akin to a great film, they are a different sort of entertainment and 2) being this dismissive of the best instances of so many game development disciplines (animation, scenario design, integration of narrative, vocal direction and performance capture, etc) is a kind of bizarre take. I won't say it's disrespectful because it's just one dude's opinion, but if I were a semi public figure I would hate the idea of me shitting all over the work of probably the best animators in videogames today and it getting back to them. It's weird because he actually likes Marvel movies (which LACK so many quality examples of the disciplines of filmmaking), yet hates a Marvel game a priori despite it actually being a very accomplished instance of its medium. This is the real make it make sense moment. The Spiderman games are absolutely better than any of the Marvel cinematic universe products.

'enders game' sounds like a category at the game awards, and like with many categories spiderman 2 would be in it. its definitely a stretch
NL is bring up something good/well liked (Ender’s Game) and saying how the game awards doesn’t recognize real quality and would instead opt for mundane, batchest-able Spiderman 2. This is also a play on “Ender’s Game” not really being a video game (and therefore nonsensical to include in the game awards) despite having “game” in it’s title, so treating it like it’s game is a bit of a 5head goof.

I agree honestly. The awards part of the game awards is not the top reason why i watch it. It's 100% the spectacle. As someone who played two games out of every game nominated in all the categories this year and only one of the game of the year nominee's. It doesn't really mean much to me.
any aggregate opinion about media is useless, if you care about scores in websites or critic awards you are a mark for the industry.
I agree, I think viewing individual scores from people you tend to share tastes with is a more meaningful metric for whether or not you'll probably like a game.
Disagree, in general scores will speak to the general quality and polish of a game. Obviously a high score doesn't mean you'll enjoy the game, you wouldn't go to a restaurant with food you don't like because it has a high score on maps, but it's probably pretty good at making that food at that price.

A game can get bad scores for being buggy if the media or public has a negative impression of it meanwhile other buggy games get off scot-free since people like them, and the same pattern exists for every other characteristic. Aggregate opinions do not reflect anything but the popularity of the thing being judged
