Fanny fact: My parents bought Master System 2 thinking it was Master System 1. Later they bought Master System 2 thinking it was Master system 2. Result? There were 2 Master Systems 2 at home ^^
The great irony is that the SMS2 was made to be cheaper than the original SMS, but because it was released in lower quantities it is more expensive to obtain today than the original, more fully-featured version.
Timstuff In the US, this is certainly true. But in the UK where I'm from, the SMS 2 is probably the more common model (it was almost at NES levels of popularity over here).
I would love to know if Double Dragon has the same amount of flicker with an actual master system (compared to your review of it with the power base converter.)
My second console ever . Even back then it puzzled me why the Pause button on the console. Having to stand up and walk to the console to go to the item menu in Alex Kidd. Mine was PAL, I'm British. It came with Alex Kidd in Miracle World built in.
Of course there's snow, it's the outdoor simulation wall 9000! It can produce any weather condition with any background! It's amazing! (I bought one btw)
I had the original Sega Master System. It came with Hang-On and Safari Hunt and I got Choplifter too. I hated those games at first but time made me like them a little.
That's my second console after atari 2600. Lot of memories. Great childhood memories. It came with preinstalled Alex kidd in the miracle world bundle - never managed it to the end. Well, at least sonic the hedgehog was more interesting. Once I had borrowed console to one buddy, and he returned it with the semi broken gamepad. How sad I was you cannot imagine 😁😁😁
I miss the tactile factor of classic game systems. I just bought a Sega Genesis model 1 at a thrift store and man, does it bring back memories. You pop the cartridge in, flick the power switch and you're ready to go. It's so satisfying. New systems just require you to insert a disk in the drive and start the game from a menu, which is dull as all hell.
Mark if you can somehow get a Japanese Sega Master System to work and play that great startup song from it in a future review of that particular Sega Master System, you sir will have my gratitude.....and a favorite and a like to the review video.
Love your reviews, only one complaint please stop calling ntsc tvs, western tvs. Only some American countries, Japan, South Korea and a few others used it, the rest of the world used PAL or SECAM :-).
Original master system looks like it's right off the death star with the black and red scheme and fonts. Cool system. I think for collector reasons I'd get the og
Holy sh*t the master system 2 was made in Thailand? The first Game Console I ever had. And now the first (and hopefully the one and only) woman I'm going to marry is from Thailand! Mind blown.
If you live in america then europe is to the east. Everyone here, at least in the upper east states, considers europe to be in the east, and asia to the far west.
GoodTofuFriday lol. I'd get very confused with that kind of logic. I live in Australia, and consider both Australia AND europe to be part of the west. But... that's a cultural thing. Geographically, from Australia, America is to the east, and Europe to the west. The official definitions though are defined by England, because all lines of lattitude in the modern world (and timezones) are defined relative to the line running through England. Though this actually means Europe is technically in the east... (England is neither east nor west, it is the centre point of the system of measure. XD). America is then at the far western limit, and Japan essentially is at the far eastern limit. (Also means that going west from America takes you into the 'east'). So... Really, in conclusion, geographically none of it really makes any sense, but 'the west' has a clear cultural meaning at least...
Unless of course Mark has a special TV that has shoot outs in dusty saloon bars and chases 'Injuns' through the desert on horse back? Please tell me this is true!
I have both of these in my retrogaming collection. The Mighty Master System mk1 sits aloft my retrogaming cabinet, the mk2 is in a cupboard somewhere 😂
I don't know Mark...I would say generally speaking a console followed by a number 2 is usually better. Not in the Master System's case but the PlayStation 2 brings up a pretty good argument. ;)
Yeah...but SMS price is rather high on ebay cheap ones with are around $50. While good boxed ones they called "mint" "new" are like $300-500. I just ordered SMS II but what's weird is there's no shipping cost and there's no shipping to choose and I'll probably get scam but I'll see in few days time when the store decided to reply back to me.
I like the light because it helps me identify a problem. Because how can you tell if the video wire isn't good if you can't tell if the damn thing is turned on?
A little bit of color matching electrical tape, and problem solved :) Never understood why manufacturers can't just add option to disabled the light, or dim it when device is fully operational, something like a theater ight mode.
I had a Master System 2, and loved it :) My version came with Sonic 1 built in. Though for some reason the ending/credits never displayed when you completed the game o_0
This system seem like a very well design console, the only downside at least to me is that, like the NES 2, it only supports RF video output which is not my cup of tea.
If only that rf out was not slowy on mine, it would,ve be more tolerable to use it but it’s rf out is unforgivenly bad, now i really would like to get my hands on that gamegear to mastersystem convertor adaptor (wich is currently in prototype form) in order to play gamegear games on the mastersystem.
Hehehe finaly a master system review, after such long time, too bad he couldn't make it work on a western tv set? Also the ending was stupid BUT to make it work on a us tv set you do need 1 a pal vcr with composite out, 2 (unless a us tv does support pal via composite) a pal to ntsc convertor, 3 a step up convertor to convert 120 into 240 volt, ntsc games should,ve no issues apart from speed differences and possibly some timing issues, depending on the games you play on it.
My very first console with built in "Alex Kidd in Miracle World". The memories. What a beautiful time!
Same here ❤. Christmas 1994.
I was 9 got it for Christmas.
The Master System II was my first console. I love the design, so simple and beautiful!
FERNANDO? I donated that sms, my name ain't Fernando T_T. I remember that when you posted this on classic game room my name was right.
Oh well at least he gave you a shoutout do you still own a game system you don’t need I’d love to have one
Greetings Francesco from Germany:-)
The old days when they still new how to make satisfying buttons. That nice round big puase button :P
This brings so many memories, it was my best friends Master System, and we were playing Alex Kidd and New Zealand story! Those were the days!
we called new zealand story Tikkie and that was a hard game !
Fanny fact: My parents bought Master System 2 thinking it was Master System 1. Later they bought Master System 2 thinking it was Master system 2.
Result? There were 2 Master Systems 2 at home ^^

Nope, i keep finding units for 17 dollars, ITS A DREAM!
Here in the UK the mk1 master system is the more rare one.
We are all to the west of the Intergalactic Space Arcade. Fact!! :)
I would love to know if Double Dragon has the same amount of flicker with an actual master system (compared to your review of it with the power base converter.)
I wish to go there one day!
The problem is that I live in chile
wait, i thought you were ON the intergalactic space arcade
@But PAL Region is also using western televisions ;), you have struggles connecting to a ntsc tv ;)
is this a real place to visit???
I've owned a Master System II. It was pretty awesome, and it had Alex Kidd in Miracle World built into it.
My second console ever .
Even back then it puzzled me why the Pause button on the console. Having to stand up and walk to the console to go to the item menu in Alex Kidd.
Mine was PAL, I'm British. It came with Alex Kidd in Miracle World built in.
I played this system for most of my little childhood and loved it. Altered Beast was a favorite of mine. The built in Alex Kidd was great too!
I remember this console and all my childhood memories.
I had one of these, but the first one look's more awesome.
I still have this console!
That is impressive!
I had this! In Australia, it came with Alex Kid in Miracle World built-in!
Someone needs to donate a PAL TV to Mark. It will open a whole new world of possibility.
My first console! I spent countless hours on the few cartridges I had and it never got boring ...
I used to have this console and have fond memories of playing games like rainbow islands and alex the kid.
I hope West Ky looks like the "outdoor simulation wall 9000" with all that snow this winter.
Of course there's snow, it's the outdoor simulation wall 9000! It can produce any weather condition with any background! It's amazing! (I bought one btw)
I had the master system 2 in the early 90s. Ours came built in with sonic. Great days :')
My first console. Happy memories.
You sound exactly like Egon Spengler or aka Harold Ramis GHOST BUSTERS !! 😎
SNOW??? Its like 90 degrees here in Oregon.
Triple digits over here in So. CA.
*****
Where in Texas? Down here in Houston it's still freaking hot.
Even in Connecticut it's like 80. Where the hell is he?
Today's high is 62 in Illinois. Crazy, huh?
Mid 80s for us in Sunny San Diego
Does CGR say that whole "Banished from Earth... review everything" sentence in one breath?
The Outdoor Simulation Wall 9000 supports weather? I knew there was a catch to that second hand 8500s.
I had the original Sega Master System. It came with Hang-On and Safari Hunt and I got Choplifter too. I hated those games at first but time made me like them a little.
Sega has awesome names for their game consoles. Master system sounds awesome.
I bought one with Alex the kid in miracle world built in for £60 second hand.Great 🎮 game
That snow looks cool!
I love this, first console I ever played.
I just so happened to watch this on a day that I'm snowed in
That ending is the perfect expression of what it's like living in the midwest after a cold front.
Just found you on youtube ive subscribed love all the retro games reviews
Love your vids man! Always gives me a smile.
Great review and btw congratulations sir!
I like how you can simulate snow up there in space. I wish it could snow here D:
Snow in mid September?
Is he in Calgary? Cause I heard they had snow about a week ago.
*****
Ah that would explain it...
Outdoor Simulation Door 9000!! Duh! :)
We have pal in Australia. Works perfectly on our “ western “ televisions !
I miss the tactile factor of classic game systems. I just bought a Sega Genesis model 1 at a thrift store and man, does it bring back memories. Awww yeah, that's some Swedish right there at 2:39!
Love it that Sega got so many games etc. localised over here :)
The outdoor simulation wall is broken and stuck on snow mode. Must be in response to the only rf out on the master system 2.
The outdoor simulation simulates real life winter in space? Now it want one
Mark if you can somehow get a Japanese Sega Master System to work and play that great startup song from it in a future review of that particular Sega Master System, you sir will have my gratitude.....and a favorite and a like to the review video.
In Europe the mastersystem gave the NES a run for its money, some videostores only rented Sega games and had an exclusive sega-license
You should really consider buying a PAL TV. You get so many PAL consoles you really need one.
You have an awesome announcer voice!
Master System II looks a lot like the Sega Genesis 2nd version :)
Love your reviews, only one complaint please stop calling ntsc tvs, western tvs. Only some American countries, Japan, South Korea and a few others used it, the rest of the world used PAL or SECAM :-).
PAL is a western TV format! Last time I checked we are in the West here in the UK!
my first console!
That's weird this being Made In Thailand I can never find them for cheap like Mega Drive 2 here in Thailand!
I want one of these!
MK1 was made in China
Original master system looks like it's right off the death star with the black and red scheme and fonts. Cool system. I think for collector reasons I'd get the og
I may never know how these legendary systems work. But, hey! As long as it plays well, it's cool!
I will always be an nes fanboy, but I grudgingly admit I would have loved to play Alex Kidd, and phantasy star back in the day...
The think the original Master System looks much more stylish. Now review a Master System III. XD
joshua powell Yes. It was only released in certain countries though.
Holy sh*t the master system 2 was made in Thailand? The first Game Console I ever had.
And now the first (and hopefully the one and only) woman I'm going to marry is from Thailand!
Mind blown.
wish this guy was my boyfreind reminds me of lead stoner in film Grandmas Boy Awsome! Love the master system II still my favourite console
Oh my god, I used to have one of these!
Except that mine had Sonic the Hedgehog built into it
Did it run faster?
Slayermetallica69 Maybe, I don't know, it was years ago
***** F*** you I was tired
My first ever console! :D
Western television...? Surely you mean 'American'? Unless you don't count Europe and Australasia as western, but do count Japan and the far east...
If you live in america then europe is to the east. Everyone here, at least in the upper east states, considers europe to be in the east, and asia to the far west.
GoodTofuFriday What the actual fuck?!
GoodTofuFriday What kind of television do Eskimos use? lol
GoodTofuFriday lol. I'd get very confused with that kind of logic. I live in Australia, and consider both Australia AND europe to be part of the west. But... that's a cultural thing. It's already snowing over there already? It just started getting cold around here in eastern Canada. I feel for ya man.
TRUXTON!!!!!!One of the best video game ever created!!!!
I have both of these in my retrogaming collection.
The Mighty Master System mk1 sits aloft my retrogaming cabinet, the mk2 is in a cupboard somewhere 😂
Thanks Mark! But it appears that your outdoor simulation wall 9000 is broken.
looks like it might be compatible with a genesis power adapter but getting it to work with the american frequencies might be the fun part
I don't know Mark...I would say generally speaking a console followed by a number 2 is usually better. Not in the Master System's case but the PlayStation 2 brings up a pretty good argument. ;)
What's going on with the clone Marks? First one was malfunctioning, now they're rebelling against Mark Prime.
My first games console with sonic built in
+Jack Williams the sega CD had been released.
+Jack Williams still a good system to this day. I'd rather have it than the Saturn in fact.
the mega drive I mean
+Jack Williams yeah, you can get a mega drive/Genesis for dirt cheap still though
The first model is a piece of art that second model is more a piece of.... 😋
Master bater system was my first console
I DON'T like a light indicating wether something is on or not, the light of my laptop burns my eyes when I'm on a dark room.
I like the light because it helps me identify a problem. Because how can you tell if the video wire isn't good if you can't tell if the damn thing is turned on?

I see you bought the Mike and winter DLC for the Outdoor Simulation Wall 9000
GREAT VIDEO! LOVE THE MASTERSYSTEM
Memories 😢
This system seem like a very well design console, the only downside at least to me is that, like the NES 2, it only supports RF video output which is not my cup of tea.
+*** VOAN *** the original Master System supports SCART which is the best picture possible apart from HDMI. Although America doesn't support Scart.
ojideagu I'm saying this in regards to the region I try it.
*The French unit has AV scart!*
"More videogame systems should have doors!"
Cool! Microsoft will remember that and put a VHS door on the next Xbox One model.
Well that was a very Wes Anderson ending.
SEGA Master System, and Wes Anderson... I had my fix for the day.
Had one as a kid loved hang on n alex the kid..
Outdoor Simulation Wall 9000 FTW!!!
They are all over the UK in eBay
I am extremely glad you are not a model with a script!
I had this console xD
I want to see how the size of that compares to the sega nomad or gamegear
It snowed in Pittsburgh recently?
The SEGA CD Model 2 had a door as well, instead of a tray.
Greetings from Italy :D
You'll have to mod your console so you can play it on a U.S. T.V. Also, you'll need a step up converter for the power.
Thi8s was my first console. Not this exact one...I don't think, but the same model
Trying to make work a PAL game console from the cradle of western civilization in a western television.
That must be easy, Mark.
snow in September?????? where the heck r u???
Wait! What tha'....how is it snowing? It's frigging September's! Where the hell do you live? Antarctica!
I've never seen or heard of this, before? Did it have an American release?
nope only Europe and Australia.
hardcpy And Brazil, a brazilian company called Tectoy used to import Sega stuff here, basically from Europe and/or Japan.
yer i heard the master system was huge in brazil.
Basically people jumped into SNES later, while Mega Drive (Genesis) was quite popular, but SNES got all the way.
Love me some snes
Hehehe finaly a master system review, after such long time, too bad he couldn't make it work on a western tv set? I'll screen shoot but the gofer might see that the bloody lawn mowers on its side again.
I vaguely remember seeing this in toys r us as a kid. Wasn't it grey in the US?
