Superheroes being humans stories are always a breath of fresh air.
I mean, you make it sound as if they barely ever act like human beings. I think the fantastic, aspirational qualities of superheroes have been pushed back over the years to the point where it’s almost like they’re only allowed out of the house with relatable human behaviour and real-world social responsibilities as their chaperones. It seems like everyone imagines superheroes in their head as endlessly zany and completely unrealistic fantasy, and then thinks they’re breaking the mold when they talk about lunch. It’s been 12 years since the shawarma scene, people! Iron Man was an alcoholic in 1979! We’re walking in our own footprints!
@MigTheBird I think they mean stories where the focus is not they fighting some BBEG or the bad guy of the week, but just doing day-to-day things we would consider mundane; For instance, this one boils down to a veteran, changed and scarred by war, reconnecting with his past hobbies from before said war
Until they get edgy and insufferable. You know, like Invincible
0:55 Spidey, 'What made you put down the pencil cap?'
Steve with a thousand yard stare, 'The war.'
The Nazis, Hitler, D-Day, Red Skull, Hydra getting frozen
You know 'stuff'
And of course, they show him drawing in a deleted scene in the Avengers with Ashley Johnson! :)
Spidey: What happened man?
Cap: wtf do you mean what happened? THE WAR????!!!!!
War never changes...
@@rapidfirer56 I should have met Ron Perlman last year..... :
Both had good points. Cap's point about about not being the same person he was a a child, and Peter's point about you don't have to leave the positive things behind.
It's ironic, Pete telling someone else they don't have to leave everything behind.

@@muigokublack6487hate to bring this up for the thousandth time, but the people writing literally were forced to and would’ve avoided it if at all possible. If there’s ever something “canon” you can basically consider non canon, it’s that.
@@Green_Bean_Machine Incorrect. Both Joe Quesada and Strazenski were on-board with undoing the marriage. Just Strenzenki wanted to do it differently than having Mephisto be the one.
Yeah I'd love to shunt it off into the non-canon category but Marvel I'm convinced likes to twist the knife every so often to remind readers that yeah they're never getting back together (I give you Paul) but we'll constantly tease it. Thank god for the new Ultimate Spider-Man comic.
I do get where Steve is coming from. In the 40’s if you were sickly you were basically shunned by everyone and bring into nerd stuff like comics just added to the misery and that’s when you were a kid, bring a grown man into comics in the 40’s with a weak body would’ve been torture.
There's also how he views things. He says he did those as a kid because he thought he could change the world or make an impact. When he became Captain America, that's how he could make an Impact. Who he was and who he became were very different. Peter never really changes. He's a lovable nerd all the time.
Peter has his first chemistry set as it's a reminder of his dreams, of when he was a kid wanting to change the world. When he gained the ability to do so, he never forgot the kid that wanted to help. Steve Forgot. When he became Captain America, that was who he was. A Soldier, not a sickly artist.
The two are contrasts of one another at times. SO similar, yet different.

“Past bad”
What a hot take 🙄
@@Quincy_MorrisNice job missing the point. Takes real skill to be that self-righteous.
Sure, there were parts of the past that were bad. Just like there's parts of the here and now that are bad. But this wasn't for pointing out the flaws. This was simply pointing out the reality of some people's thought process in that era. And to a certain extent it wasn't entirely wrong, either. Being weak/not physically capable in a time where it felt like your country - and the world, for that matter - needed every hand it could get likely would have been hard on anyone's conscience. That portion isn't necessarily "good" or "bad." It was just the way things were.
In the 80s, Steve Rogers actually illustrated comic books for Marvel! This has been retconned out?
Don't worry about it I mean captain America would be like 70 if he was defrosted in the 80s
@@mendeleyev1790 They're literally saying he hasn't illustrated in modern times! I recall he would draw in order to relax or meditate. I recognized great story telling, but this basically unwrites decades of history and an aspect of his character.
If I recall right, that was a complaint when the issue came out. Drawing is something Steve still does now and again during down time, so he wouldn't be ashamed of it. And he wouldn't be so dismissive of Peter trying to connect like he does. The intent is good, but the author had to derail several characters to do it.
@@jacobanderson9262 my point was that the 80s captain America and the now captain are different characters. They share in the same idea of who captain America is but some changes are to be expected. I had no idea cap drew until I read this.
@@mendeleyev1790 a number of stories, 90s and beyond, showed him drawing or doodling to relax. I guess the character trait went to the wayside. Maybe this was a way of bringing it back.

Moments like these really remind me that spider-man is the package deal of superheroes. The righteousness on par with the likes of Superman and Captain America, the comedic and charsmatic charm of deadpool and nightwing, the dark and vengeful side of Batman and Punisher when he's in his venom suit, and the down to earth personality and daily problems that almost everyone can relate to. Probably because it humanizes them. Captain America is a symbol. He's a stalwart protector of freedom and justice. But Steve Rodgers?
Steve Rodgers is a man. A good man. Better than most. But a man nonetheless and it's healthy for him, and readers to remember that.

@@deemandude6131 The Balls.... its the balls
Joining the Army doesn't mean losing your nerdy and dorky side behind. It gets multiplied tenfold. You're just in shape and can do things you never could in high school. I remember getting to my first duty station back in 2007 and having a Lieutenant I just met and while making introductions ask me, "so which server do you play on?" And then other LTs and Sergeants suddenly arguing about factions, which games are better and the whole thing.
From speaking to older veterans including my dad and grandfather, that wasn't much different in their times either. I suppose its just not as well known. Military and war movies don't usually show what Soldiers do during their off duty times.
@@AdventVFX Kinda, but not necessarily. For example what I said holds true even for generations that never deployed to combat. As well as for MOS's that don't do combat or deployments.
In the military, you lose a sense of isolation. I was going to say privacy, because you lose privacy when you are in Basic being bedded in open squad bays and showing with dozens of people at a time in open showers (no stalls). But that leads to most people losing an isolationist mentality and realizing there are far more people like them then they knew.
Let me give an interesting civilian example here. My brother is quite a bit older than I am. He played D&D in the 1970s when it was first a thing. He went to Highschool with another friend of mine who happens to be a bit older than me as well. Both are D&D fans. They never played D&D with each other. They never knew each other. And I find that fascinating because of the mentality of early D&D players commonly held that they had a hard time getting players together since D&D fans were so spread out.
You can literally go to highschool with like a hundred people who have the same interests and such as you, and never know it.
In the military, those barriers drop. Everyone knows what everyone does. When I got to my first duty station, I had a D&D group within a weak, and I didn't even look for it. I literally had a sergeant come up to me and ask if I liked it, and when I said yes, asked if I wanted to join his group.
Think about that for a moment. You start work at a new job, and one of the managers comes up to you, introduces themselves. And then asks if you play D&D, World of Warcraft, or whatever. And if you say yes to the former, ask if you want to join their group. That doesn't happen very often in civilian jobs.
Now.. this is a bit of an extreme example, as I don't believe this happens in every unit. But something similar happens in every unit. You'll have a group of people who have similar interests and they'll immediately try to see if every new guy that comes in wants to join up with them, for whatever it is. The bonds of friendship form incredibly quickly in the military. The only professions I've seen do similar are Law Enforcement and first responders. Not to say it doesn't happen anywhere outside of that, but the chances are obviously much lower.
Please don't take this long winded response as a criticism or disagreement. I'm merely expressing my experiences to something I found to be quite profound and unique. My first day at work (meaning my first day with my unit, not training) in the Army was way way different than my first day of any other place worked at.
@@taemien9219 That's one of the reasons why I feel like the writer that wrote that issue didn't really understand Steve Rogers as a character. Especially since Cap actually was an artist in the 70s and the 80s. I think the writer focused too much on the soldier/war aspect of Captain America, which does a disservice to who Steve is as a whole. I don't think he would ever be ashamed of his art and who he was back then.

in the 70's and 80's Cap was an artist ( commercial when he had a secrete ID and a police officer) he always liked to do his art be for they rebooted him
I loved that they kept his artistic background in the MCU. His sketch of the monkey doing tricks in Cap 1 was great. Unfortunately, the clip of Steve sketching the NYC skyline was cut from the theatrical cut of Avengers.
Heroes just being homies is what the cinematic universes need to lock in on
It's sadly too late for that but I agree. Less jokes about how ridiculous everything is for being comic adaptations and more heroes being real people would've been nice

The fact that I HAVE this physical issue brings a whole nother level of joy
Spider man has not only helped regular people even with just carryung groceries for them. To helping villians find a better path in life if it was possiable. But he has been known to help other superheros like this also. Heck remember spiderman is hulks friend and a good one at that. The tragity is that most times spiderman is in a bad way there is noone there for him.
This is one of the reasons why Cap is absolutely beloved by the fans. Dude is so wholesome. He cares about his fellow man, he gets the job done, and he's willing to go out of his way for others.
Steve: "Do you still pull out your first chemistry set?"
Peter, who, depending on canon, has a degree in physics and chemistry and used that knowledge to design his web fluid: "..........no?"
I don't think this was intentional but I love the idea that Cap was an art geek but didn't cut it so he opted to be a soldier which led to him being one of the biggest (fictional) heroic historical figures. It paints (wink) a nice parallelism to certain Austrian failed wannabe painter that become one of the worst real (and fictional) villains of *ever*.
Omg 😱 This is a dope concept.
I mean when he was drafted into the war he became a Messager for the Germans and won a purple heart for his acts on the field, although he would eventually get caught in a gas attack and not get his mask up in time and was severely affected by it to which he would change from the coma he was in for some time and become a villain after coming out from it.
I don’t connect that at all

Those panels when they’re staking out are iconic. Arguably the two most important earth born heroes in Marvel…who started off as nobodies. It’s like the computer geek in high school who grows up to run a million dollar tech company lol
This is why I love Marvel. It's very much a case where both characters highlight different values to one another while coming together in a meaningful way to highlight the best of them.
Almost completely unrelated, but this comic points out the reason why Captain America would get the green willpower ring, while Spider-Man would get the Blue Hope ring, if they both got a single power ring a piece.
I have always wanted a what if Steve Rogers became a green lantern i think he would have got it before the serum and would have never became Captain America i think he may have taken the greatest green lantern moniker before Hal Jordan and would have been his trainer

@xxrieanrinei4922 I think it's fine in profile but the frontal shots are hideous!
@@seventhofearth No it isn't, that's deadpool.
I think this hit a happy median for Steve Rogers. I don't think it's controversial to say we're all sick of The Star-Spangled Fascist from stuff like the Ultimates. And going the Superman route of being the penultimate Good Person can be very helpful to have around other characters who may struggle with keeping to their morals and values. But I think this hit the balance between the jerk and the paragon. He's just been Captain America for over a century. Mask on or off, shield or no shield, he's always Cap. So the guy never had a chance to reconnect with an identity other than a title, a symbol. I'm not sure how much Steve knows of Peter Parker's backstory in this continuity, but I think that after the talk about 'not leaving it behind', Steve did some reflecting and realized what Peter really did mean by having something other than the cape life. He's generally been very well adjusted, but looking at how he talked to Spider-Man I think Steve saw how callousness and disconnectedness was creeping in. So he decided to dig out the sketch books, even do some online research on drawing modern comic characters, and create again. And he'd do it with his fellow nerd.
And, poetically enough for returning to childhood projects, I'm literally unboxing a bunch of old Lego sets and fixing them up after a move. How's that for cosmic timing.
You are the fascist
It also shows that Steve is still human. We like to think of heros as better than us. Even when they're not perfect, they're often aware of their issues. But here, we see that Peter recognized there was more to this than Cap was letting on. Which isn't crazy, when you lose pieces of yourself through trauma, bullying, belittlement, it's often easier for someone else to notice, someone else who has been in a similar spot.
People forget how smart Peter is. To me, his final lines as he leaves Cap, "I do get it out from time to time... don't know why I lied about that" seems perfectly constructed by Peter to make Cap question if he's lying to himself as well, for reasons he likely isn't consciously aware of. If you tell someone "you're lying to yourself about this", they will 99 times out of 100 get defensive. But when you instead sort of project that same idea, but seemingly directed towards oneself, it's a lot less likely to shut the other person down. You effectively demonstrate "I am making decisions that even I'm not sure why I made them" in a way that isn't negative or judgmental.
i love it when heroes are just being people with one another
0:17 what spidey doin double cheeked up on a Thursday afternoon

Jessica is fine but Peter is carrying the bakery.
A wise man will say "becoming a man, you must put away childish things"
A enlightened man will say "never forget to dust off childish things from time to time, remember how you became a man..."
I think its the author of the narnia books who said "when I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up"
Would love to see more of this cap and Spider-Man dynamic. It’s similar to a healthy Batman and robin relationship.
These are the best types of stories that make these characters who whey are. It’s not the crossover events that make us love this word, it’s the small moments where characters that you want to see have a conversation get to interact and talk throughout an issue.
why tf is spiderman caked up in every panel bro
Why does it feel like Peter still kept his old chemistry set because of Uncle Ben?
Stories like this make me think that having Iron Man be Parker's superhero mentor/pseudo-father figure in the MCU instead of Cap might've been a missed opportunity.
'Course, a lot of how they handled Spidey in the MCU was kind of wasted opportunity I feel like, considering how they handled Uncle Ben (or lack thereof), among other things.
funny thing, Cap never actually put the pencil down. he just uses it for different purposes. like, when not in costume, he moonlights as a police sketch artist...he also draws for enjoyment. Steve just aimed a pre-serum talent he had towards a good cause.
