CUBA / Shocking truth - an average salary 30 USD / How CUBA became insanely poor / How people live

  • This is Lyadov. Today, I’m in Cuba, an island that has become somewhat iconic for its prolonged fight for freedom.
    This country never ceases to amaze you: an average salary on island is about 30 USD,
    while a restaurant bill for a party of two will cost you 60 USD or more. Cuba still has a food rationing system in place, and in order to buy anything you will have to queue for hours in every single shop. You won’t find here any American chains like McDonald’s, and there’s no Coke on sale. There are no Ikea or Zara stores here. Russia has them no more due to the recent events, but Cuba has never had them, that’s for over 60 years now. Cuba has been a closed market for most international brands, and many local people don’t even know about them. For over half a century, Cuba has been completely isolated from the rest of the world. International sanctions cut off the supplies of food, dairy products, cars, airplanes, clothes, digital appliances, even smartphones - there are no official ways to get those here. And yet, despite all this, people here like to chill every evening, listen to some good music, smoke a cigar and enjoy the amazing views of the Caribbean. This is Lyadov. Let’s see how people live in Cuba.

    It's surreal, seeing people looking up schematics to repair vehicles built in the 1950's on tablets built in the 2020's. People are so incredibly innovative here. I'm amazed at how well Cubans maintain their things, though I wish that was by choice and not out of necessity. Also, that group that let you cut in line to get food first at the grocery store just to allow a foreigner to have a good experience was truly wholesome. I can't say I would do that in their shoes. Great video.

      One of the things that Nikita Khrushchev demanded from JFK was to stop conspiracies to take down the communist regime of Fidel Castro.
      JFK started collaborating with the Soviets by sabotaging the Bay of Pigs invasion by Cuban exiles. After that every American president protected the Castro's regime from any military action..
      Fidel Castro showed his gratitude by sabotaging the initiative for the Americas, similar to the plan marshall for Europe.
      Also Fidel Castro prepared, organized, trained, armed and supported all Marxist guerrillas that started plaguing Central and South America with the help of his masters the soviets.

    Havana is not Cuba. I have traveled throughout the country and can assure you that this guy doesn't show the reality of life for the majority of Cubans. And Havana is not the most beautiful place in that country. It was actually the place I disliked. Cuba is a socialist-communist country, not solely socialist. There is no crime in Cuba because you don't want to see what the government will do to a Cuban if they did, especially against a tourist. That's the communist side of it btw. The kitchen he shows in that persons home, while he was talking about groceries, that's a Cuban who has money. That's like going to a rich persons home in the USA and showing their kitchen. The average Cuban doesn't have a kitchen that beautiful. Most toilets in Cuba do not have toilet seats, for those who don't know. You my find them in tourist areas but not so true outside of those areas. If you need over the counter meds, good luck! Go to a Cuban pharmacy and see what they have, nothing. If you can get ibuprofen, be prepared to pay two bucks USD a pill. And nothing is over the counter in their pharmacies either. Now imagine being a Cuban on a salary of 10-30 USD per month! And no, the 30 USD per month is for people who have been working for well over 20 years. Salary is based on how many years you worked, not what you do. So there is a huge hustlers and black market in Cuba. A lot of those cell phones are gifts given by tourists, which are then sold on that black market. And some Cuban ladies will hook up with tourists for free goodies too. That's the dark side of Cuba btw. As he witnessed, you have to be careful not to get ripped off in Cuba. That hotel charging $1000 USD per night, LMFAO!!! A lot of Cubans don't know what life is like outside of Cuba, hence why he tried to sell him some ridiculous number. That's evidence on how much the government in Cuba blocks information from the outside world. If Cubans saw how we truly lived they would revolt in the streets.
    I am not saying all of this to bash Cuba btw. There are many wonderful aspects to the country as well. But I wish someone would show more of the truth about how life is truly like for the average Cuban. To put it simple, it's like living a life with no control over ones own destiny. It's very depressing. I will say though, they have some of the best darn coffee in the world!

    • @benjaminjo
      @benjaminjo ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thank you for such a detailed, thorough write up. It's funny how you wish someone would show more of the truth of life for the average Cuban, when CLEARLY that "someone" should be YOU, bud! You don't even need footage of you being there or on camera. Write a script (similar ot what you did here), and speak into a microphone with copyright-free videos and pictures of cuba in the background. That's it.
      I'm fascinated with Cuba, because of how strangely dystopian it is in relation to being an American. Also, that young lady with the iPhone, I kinda felt like she was lying about HOW she got that expensive phone, even by American standards. She had a fit body and she's young, she most likely had to do 'extra services' to either earn enough money to buy it herself, or she had a generous male benefactor who gave her his spare for 'good service'. That's just the feeling I get for some reason. But, who's going to go on camera and say she got the phone she got from offering her body to foreign men?
      Secondly, I saw this video of a man who got his green card from Cuba from an American white woman. He went to a local grocery food store and literally had a nervous breakdown. He could not BELIEVE how much food was even on ONE shelf, let alone dozens and dozens throughout the store. "Not a single empty shelf!" he said. And when he had steak for the first time in his life (apparently, it's only reserved for state politicians and rich persons, like ourselves), the way his body lit up with joy was something wild to see, because it's so normal to me.
      My theory is the people in Cuba are so "laid back" apparently due to lack of proper nutrition, and so they don't have as much energy to be as expressive and emotive as they'd normally be if they had access to high quality food such as chicken, pork, beef, eggs, etc. When most of your foods are grains, you're going to lack what the body needs to function optimally. I'm also of the opinion that this is done intentionally to keep people from having the energy to rise up and fight against this oppression.
      I'll be paying a visit to Cuba to see for myself if my theories are true or false, and get a sense of what's going on there. I'd like to know your thoughts.

    • @sebastienbolduc5654
      @sebastienbolduc5654 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@benjaminjo well thank you for the compliment. As for footage and pictures, I do have them that show how life is truly like there. If I ever go back I think I would be more conscious on documenting it in more detail. The Cuban government is transparent with tourists/visitors. You can literally travel almost anywhere in that country, takes pictures/videos without a problem. Just be careful to never photograph military or police, it's highly illegal. I do respect Cuba for being transparent like that.
      Sex tourism is a thing in Cuba, even though it's also illegal. Disgusting, yes. But at the same time you can't blame Cuban women who are desperate. Your observations were correct about the lady within the video. I don't wish her any disrespect but I also question the legitimacy of her response. Pornography is also illegal on the island. In a way that's a good thing because Cubans don't view nudity in a sexual way, as we do. I met and bought a painting from an artist in Cuba who is one of the rare painters whom are permitted to paint nude portraits. I didn't purchase a nude btw. LOL All painters within Cuba must have a license to paint and sell their paintings. No matter where you go within the country, you will find the same "paintings" everywhere. Okay, the quality of each one differs from the other, depending on the artist. They are only permitted to paint what the government deems "official" and have approved. So they all use the same template/layouts in their paintings; however, the artist I met was permitted free range to paint what they wanted. At the time, he had spent 17 years in art school. There are so many things that I could cover here btw. Cuba is definitely different and comes with both its good and bad qualities. Another example, if you have a magazine or book upon your arrival, airport security must exam it before allowing you to enter the country with it.
      I would highly encourage you to visit. It's very safe. They actually love Americans who want to visit their country btw. I met Americans who also said that customs didn't even stamp their passports out of kindness, as to aid them in avoiding any troubles upon their return to the USA. I do not think it's as severe anymore for an American to travel there like it use to be.
      I only saw and ate beef one time in Cuba. It's even rare for tourist too. There are restaurants that do serve beef, but those are only affordable for tourists. The beef I had wasn't very good either. Their meat diets mainly consists of pork and cuts of chicken. You are correct, they are lacking in proper nutrition. They aren't starving, but they're close to it. I visited a Cuban home of a person I friended during my last visit. They bath in a concreate hole in the ground, outside. They slept on mattresses that must be well over 50 years old. Mind you, there are Cubans who have new mattresses and live in good conditions. There are many factors for why there is such a variation in the quality of life between people.
      If you go to Cuba, make sure you bring food with you, meds, first aid kit, etc. If you travel with a lady friend, make sure she has her sanitary napkins on her. I once saw a pack of them in a store selling for 50 USD btw. Tourists who go there unprepared can find themselves up a creek without a paddle. I did get sick in Cuba in 2014 with a serious lung infection. The quality of healthcare I received was amazing! They are well educated in Cuba, even better than some of our own medical professionals. The problem is that they don't have access to the meds and equipment that we do. I was never charged a dime either for my medical services. I did; however, pay 65 USD for 6 antibiotics (made in China) and cough syrup. The doctor had to go to pharmacy to get it for me because they said that they would have probably not sold it to a foreigner. Meds are rationed like an SOB, and rightfully so!
      If you go, understand that there is counter surveillance in Cuba. Another Cuban friend of mine warned me about it. They take your picture at the airport upon entry for a reason. They use facial recognition software and have hidden cameras everywhere. Just keep your nose clean. Don't talk politics either. You don't want to be singled out. Overall, it's a wonderful experience despite seeing what you will witness when you get there. I highly suggest leaving the tourist areas and traveling around. The west coast is also the most beautiful part of the island, especially Trinidad, etc. The people on the west coast are also more friendly and less aggressive when it comes to tourists and money. You cannot walk ten feet in places like Havana without someone bothering you for money or to sell you something.
      Once again, I don't say all this to bash Cuba. I could equally write a list of all the positive qualities as well. But holy heck, it's a depressing and hard AF life for so many of them. I also saw the video you mentioned about the Cuban who is now living in the USA. It's Yoel And Mari.

      What you write is very accurate, i have been to Cuba almost 30 times, reason being i'm married to a Cuban, when i visit the country i don't stay in swanky hotels, i live amongst my wife's family in their home, i am allowed this because i am married to a national but have to apply for a "family visa" not a tourist one. I even got married in Cuba and have now just recently had my 22yr anniversary. The part of Cuba i visit is Las Tunas, there's very very few tourists so you do stick out a bit more. It's a wonderful country with wonderful people, i love my Cuban family there. Life can be very hard there especially in rural places. Whenever i see documentaries about Cuba i just think why do they always film them in Havana, there is so much more to Cuba than its capital city. To me Havana is a vibrant city, however i just think it looks run down so much which is a shame. Maybe the next vlogger who does a piece on Cuba could travel up and down the country and show the real side of the country.

      These people don't have it because it doesn't exist there, but they also don't have much in terms of food either; the government decides whether they can eat or not. McDonald's dollar menu is still better than nothing.

      @Super Syrian Yeah, because they live on an island with a repressive government that they all hate.
      Of course everyone knows each other and hangs out outside, they don't have much else to do oftentimes and stand in bread lines for hours together.
      Not sure what your point here is? They all think the same way politically because they've all experienced this garbage ideology that's forced upon them; I guess if you brought a communist "utopia" to the US, like many of the idiots here want to do, then yeah, we'd get to know each other and spend alot of time together outside in bread lines as well.
      And again, I reiterate my previous statement, you can call McDonalds garbage all you want, but at least it is food that is attainable for relatively cheap when you need it. When people get hungry in that country, they don't even have that.

    Nice video as always Anton. Now you could do a documentary about how people live in your country and Russia has been affected by the war. The same you could do for Ukraine. Of course if it is safe.

    Cubans were one of the most vibrant people I've come across. In comparison to other western nations who were miserable and stressed.

      I like how think people are miserable and stressed all over the world 😂 you don’t think people in India and China are miserable and stressed, working for pennies, you don’t think people are miserable and stressed in Cuba where food isn’t even on the shelves? Get real dork

      Yeah Cubans don’t have to over work their body to death and as a result they’re happy. Shocker isn’t it?

      I think its fair to say that Cuba , in terms of its healthcare system and government services and education and weather and everything else , Cuba is the greatest country on earth , it is in my judgment ranked among the best cities in the world . This country is nothing like what I expected , it was a trip to remember , I recommend this country to anyone , its one of the places to visit in your lifetime , this island nation has some of the best cities in the world and some of the best hotels in the world , but also the beaches and the weather , the weather is amazing , its a great country , I think its the greatest country in the world , my message to Cuba is this : Is there no end to your beauty comrade ?

    Great video! I can see similarities with what my parents told me about life under communism in our country, especially about the shops.
