These are excellent points on counterpoint, things worth being aware of that I haven't heard anywhere else. Having them in mind helps you organize your study of it, instead of plod along blindly, hoping you'll figure out someday what you're doing and why.
Thank you, Alan! This is great material. Can't wait to see more videos from you. So far everything you've put out has been great (your website and videos alike). Would be great to maybe see some more videos on orchestration in English.
Awesome. The next time I will compose something, I will make sure to sing the new lines while playing the already written ones. Awesome piece of advice!
Hi, I am a beginner composer I am 16yrs old I started learning composition and music theory(before that I was writing rock/pop songs and I play the guitar) should I learn counterpoint and harmony relatively at the same time? Or should I get pretty good at harmony and then move to counterpoint? I don't want to hurry too much but at the same time I don't wanna waste time and I wanna be able to work with them pretty fast because in 2 years I wanna go to a music university at composition and I wanna have some decent skills until then. If you consider answering the question it will be helpful the question is not just for Mr. Belkin(maybe he has more things to do) but for any composer!
Mr B, please would make a short video analysis of ades' Polaris? I would very music like to hear what you have to say about this piece; on the subject harmony and rhythm especially!!
Hello Alan. Could u please explain more about counterpoint like I don't understand this. I wanna compose a fugue thats why. Right now I gave composed a fugue in d minor but idk whether its correct or not.
Please anyone, reply with an answer: at 08:30 "Quantity counts." I agree, I want to drill more quantity of writing exercises, is there an app for it? The problem is that there is no way to grade all my pencil attempts other than working thru the rules myself which is error-prone and slow. I am looking for a modern app that works for doing the "music theory 101, 102, 103, 201" level counterpoint skills. I found one old one referenced on the web but it has not been updated since many years ago, maybe only for PC, and not a modern app (called "counterpointer" or such). Personally, I wish I had learned the importance of learning counterpoint, and had basic rules of writing it's various beginner-intermediate-advanced levels, back at age 6 or something, right along with the typical "reading, writing & arithmetic" in grade school which is similarly profound in meaning & educational purpose. These basic music-composition skills are a fundamental aspect of Being Human. Also, there are "Cliff's Notes" for all the many 'great works' of literature, yet a similar concept for music, perhaps named as a "Belkin's Notes", does not exist, and this to me is a very strange and bad state of music education.
Yes and no. In the broadest sense of the word counterpoint, yes. With regard to its overwhelmingly more well-known application within European common-practice tonality and its derivatives (in contrast to other genres of world music), no.
I have seen comments so positive below. Can only express my thanks for opening doors to rich, expressive music to be heard to combat the noise so many young persons consider Music.
Love these videos! Concise, practical, and insightful.
hey buddy :D
Thank you very much, Mr. Alan Belkin!

What is contrapuntal texture? If it was explained in the video, I apologize, but I just didn't get it.
Thank you!

Lady and gentlemens. We found the gold.
Mr. Belkin I've got the notion that Counter point is a style neutral endevour?
Yes and no. In the broadest sense of the word counterpoint, yes. With regard to its overwhelmingly more well-known application within European common-practice tonality and its derivatives (in contrast to other genres of world music), no.
@@musical_lolu4811 is there any reason to not use it as a style neutral entryway into European melody?
🤗 New sub here!

👍🙂
Counterpoint in composition for now. Atonality has had its time, I believe. Time for profound composition through counterpoint.
I wish I could understand what you are saying
:,(
Bit advanced for me.
how about now?
