A thing to know about all this collection: When I was still training horses, I specialized in idiopathic lameness, and most of my clients were referred by their veterinarians. I once had a beautifully bred and well-conformed Hanoverian mare whose gaits had become so lateralized she couldn’t canter anymore. After consulting her vet to make sure she was basically sound, I put her on a six week course of passage, soft piaffer, and rein back uphill. Six weeks later, I asked her for a collected canter-the FIRST TIME IN SIX WEEKS-and she rose into the softest, more beautifully balanced than I’d dared imagine, canter. THIS is what Nuno taught me: Collection isn’t the goal. It’s the prescription. Extension arises from collection, NOT vice versa. Baby steps build GIANT movement. Why? Gravity. Think about it.

True lightnes in combination with never ending forward impulsion, upwarts of the withurst, lowering of the haunches, soft feeling legs, silk touching hands and the wisdom of a real master to use the riders back for rebalancing the horse. And over all a relaxed but also very concentrated horse, wich never give us a little sign of unwillingness although it has to give very much force.
Am I the only one who is somewhat disappointed to see one of the 'classical masters' in this video? I have never had anything but respect for Oliveira until watching this video and seeing a horse that is under-active from behind and behind the bit. :/ The horse also has more power in the one hip than the other, which would affect his straightness. I will not discredit a man I never met who is respected by millions around the globe based on this one video. Instead I would have loved to have heard his own thoughts on this video, since schooling is often a continual progression and this may have been something he was aware of and was correcting. What a pity we often cannot talk to those grand master of the past.
Kiara Done A work in progress I would say. The forehand and the base of the neck are nicely lifted and the rear end WILL of necessity lower into a more bent position. Then he has to increase his power behind. It’s all in Steinbrecht’s Gymnazium. The balance of horse and rider is impeccable. At least, that’s the way I see it.

Compare Nuno's passage with that of the 2024 Olympic Medalists. If you watch the Medalists' passage, the foreleg dangles at 45 degrees with the hoof randomly jiggling around in space and with the knee pulling back almost under the chest, causing the horse to topple forward, not drive proudly forward. Something has gone wrong with the passage. The trainers/judges are content with a hesitant, phony imitation of the passage. Take note that in Nuno's passage (and piaffe), the forearm is almost parallel with the ground.
