I test rode one of these for my son (in Australia it meets the LAMs requirements for L and P plate riders) and found it to be a surprisingly nice bike, of anything a little too powerful for a complete new rider but fine for someone who has a little experience. The sound is superb.

Just had a test ride of this A2 compliant Street Triple, and a Honda CB500X (also A2). I would have preferred to test ride the CB500F, since that would have been more comparable.
I much prefer the A2 Street Triple 660cc engine, even in restricted form it felt a lot better than the Honda 471cc parallel twin. Don't get me wrong the Honda 471cc engine is pretty good. Honda has max torque of 43Nm @ 6500rpm, Triumph 60Nm @ 5100rpm. The extra 190cc really helps this. The Triumph pulls a lot better from lower revs. The triple sound is awesome, by comparison the Honda twin sounds a bit tractor like.
The triple was smoother than the Honda twin under hard acceleration.
As said in the video the 47 BHP Triple becomes a bit breathless over 8000rpm, I guess once the restriction is lifted it would be a lot better.
I found this A2 Street Triple to handle really well. I'm not hugely experienced yet.
I much prefered the Street Triple handling over the CB500X, but then I don't think that is a valid comparison. I think I would much prefer the CB500F over the CB500X. Being so high up just seems "wobbly" to me. I like to flat foot. The CB500R would also be a more valid handling comparison.
The instrument screen on the A2 Street Triple is much easier to see than the blacked out display on the CB500X , R and F (they're the same). Honda really need to fix this. The graphics look good on the Honda display, they just need a plain LCD.
It's running costs and price that favour the Honda. Currently Honda CB500F £5550ish , Triumph Street Triple A2 £8100. Road Tax is less on the Honda £66 (Triumph £91). Honda sips a lot less fuel than the Street Triple. (Honda 75 MPG, Triumph 60 MPG). Insurance is likely to be less on the Honda too. ( I don't know this one yet )
Getting insurance on the Triumph is harder for newly qualified riders. I've had my A licence for a few months. I'm well into middle age. The Honda isn't a problem, the Triumph is harder. The insurance companies even seem to have a problem even listing the Triumph A2 triple 660cc. They just list the regular 675cc and 765cc engines. I guess the Triumph don't sell too many A2 Street Triples.
If I was on an A2 licence would I want to spend the extra £2600 on a brand new one ? I'm not sure. There is always the promise of derestriction from a Triumph dealer for around £200, once the A licence is achieved.
The derestriction I believe is playing about with throttle bodies, might have a tweak on the accelerator grip, and a remap of the ECU.
Otherwise there's a choice of a second hand Street Triple A2 or new CB500F ? Assuming you can find a second hand Street Triple A2, they seem quite rare. I've managed to find one :)
Insurance allowing (I'm on a very new A licence), I'll be getting the second hand Street Triple. Otherwise I guess I'll end up with the Honda.
If I get the Street Triple, I'll be derestricting it as soon as the insurance allows.
I did test ride the 765 RS Street Triple a few months back, and yes that is a lot better in the power stakes (obviously), but no one will insure me on one of those yet.
As for handling I'm sure the 765 RS is better, I'm not good enough to tell ! The RS's TFT display was excellent. To be honest the RS is currently a bit too quick for me.
The power kick when the RS got over about 7000 rpm and started its beautiful "howl" was exhilarating and slightly terrifying .
I also don't have enough cash for an RS !

Thanks for that write up. Just bought a cb500F as a part ex from CB125R. It’s a really nice bike for first big bike.
I learned and passed on Z650 and I am not really feeling the CB500 is any slower strangely.
When I viewed the Honda I was looking at the trident triple S and like you I had issues with insurance and them not knowing what it was.
I’m still wanting a test ride of that but the dealership wouldn’t let me after only passing week before despite being 40+...
      How did you get on?

@@majordelays4909 I really liked the CB500F (apart from the LCD visibility), it is certainly a lot more economic in many ways as compared to the Street Triple S 660.
Especially for new riders. As I said , MPG, insurance, purchase cost, and road tax.
CB500F does have enough power for the road, and yes I learnt on a 2018 CB125R too , which didn't have enough power, but that's all 125s !
I actually did get the second hand Street Triple S, but now that's gone too, and when insurance allowed I got a Speed Triple RS which has a bit too much power that I don't use to the maximum. I probably wasted my money !

As a commuter bike, CB500F is probably one of the best there is. The 17.4 litre tank and 75 MPG , it has a range of near 300 miles.

@@karlosh9286 with your last comments in mind I think I will hold on to the cb500 until I get my years no claims and then see if I can get a test ride of the S. I know they weren’t making them anymore and there is a mint condition 2k miler 2018 near me which is what was getting me all hot under the collar.

If you do like the look of a Street Triple 660, and with a years NCB, the 765cc R model could be worth a look. They're a bit cheaper than the RS.
There really is no replacement for displacement for low end torque (what I really like ) It was low end torque that got me to change the Striple 660 in for a Speed Triple 1050 RS.
In a years time there could be some second hand Trident 660s. Not as much top end as a derestricted Striple 660, but possibly a bit better low end torque (smaller bore and longer stroke, but still 660 cc)
If you want a really economic bike , that goes fast enough, and is 260 miles before the orange petrol light of doom comes on , keep the CB500F !

As the owner of a 765 Street Triple s and Hayabusa I cant understand reviews like this. Riding the base model and then complaining that it doesn’t have the components and therefore performance of a more expensive super bike! I bought it so that if I just want a steady ride out with my friend and not be riding on the edge I could do so and for that it’s one of the best bikes I know. Not old, reliable and good looking for what it is. If I had wanted everything demanded in this review I would have had to buy the rs version which would have cost me more for the luxury! In the end it does everything you can do legally on our roads and more if you push it.

I would like to ask more experience riders, is Street triple S (de-restricted) good for not very experienced riders? I mean I’ve got 2 years riding experience on Honda CB125R (4000miles) and a full licence. Thank you!

@@visordown nope I have the 765 s model. However, the comment was about wind blast on the motorway andthe A2 version shares same bodywork as the 765 version. The bikini fairing makes a noticeable enough difference for motorway speeds to be not too bad.

I've actually found wind blast on small fly screens worse than having no fly screen. They take a bit of air pressure off my chest and deflect it to my helmet. Seems to me that no fly screen or a full on screen is needed.

  • @levijean1021

Great bike..as for de-restricting this machine, the only thing you can do is remove the throttle blocker as far as I know? You'll get a little more power/speed top end but certainly wouldn't get 100 hp out of it. Restriction comes from internals-crank,pistons etc.

    • @karlosh9286
      @karlosh9286 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The A2 law states that the max unrestricted power of a bike can be 94BHP. This is what Triumph claim for this. It'll be a fair bit quicker in the top end, but will not be getting anywhere a 765 Street Triple RS (somewhere around 121 BHP)
Triumph had to build a specific 660cc triple engine that could be restricted to 47 BHP. Apparently the derestriction at a dealers is around £200 in the UK. They have to fit some different throttle bodies, I think tweak the throttle and remap the ECU.

    • @Richa98

@@karlosh9286 Yeah you're correct, just got mine done. Think I paid £50 for the map and £110 for the 70kw throttle tube. 2 Bikes for the price of 1 in a sense

    • @karlosh9286
      @karlosh9286 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@Richa98 Yes. I just recently bought a second hand Street Triple A2 S, only 18 months old for a very good price. (choice was a new CB500F or a second Street Triple A2 S)
I got it derestricted, new throttle grip and an ECU remap. Similar price to what you paid. It's quick enough for me. I had a ride of a 765 RS, nice bike , although it was quicker than I need. Plus I do like the simpler dash on the Street Triple S, and it was cheaper :)
The insurance rules seems bonkers on the Street Triple A2 S. In the UK , even if it is restricted they seem to classify it as a 94BHP bike so it's a lot more to insure in 47 BHP form as compared to say a Honda CB500F . Also derestricting the Street Triple doesn't count as a "performance mod". I don't understand insurance companies logic ...

Low down grunt, smoothness and the triple sound . It's not that the Honda twin is bad, it's quite good, the triple so much better.
The triple does drink a little more petrol but that didn't bother me :) Now it's derestricted it has more than enough power for me, plus it's a Triumph.
