He's right. The show is stunningly beautiful. I'm not a fan of Anime apart from Cowboy Bebop but this show is just such a pleasure to behold. It's just so amazingly beautiful. The artists who made this show were visionary. They're legit geniuses. I just can't overstate how gorgeous this is. You can see the love and attention that went into every cell, line, and color. It just blows me away.
@@rodericktaylor4784 Capcom had a fighting game that featured a lot of characters from the Tatsunoko animation studio fighting against various Capcom characters. It was on the Wii and it was a very under appreciated and largely forgotten game. I still own it. 3 of the G-Force characters were in the game.
Fun fact, if you had Cross Generations of Heroes which was the arcade/japanese wii port it actually had the rights to use the music from the anime. So when you fought Ken he would have the OP of Gatchaman and Jun had the ending song. Removed in Ultimate Allstars @@kevintown311
I like what he mentions about how he kept their faces. I was noticing that his superman looks like the model he used but here they definitely look like the character designs of the show.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Mr. Ross. I too grew up watching BATTLE OF THE PLANETS / GATCHAMAN on television in syndication on channel 9 (WWOR) here in New York; and fell for it like a ton of bricks - it was really a shock to the system but in a good way. I had been familiar with Japanese Animae before this because i had seen RAIDEEN in syndication on channel 47, but GATCHAMAN was just different.
Gatchaman has a gritty, edgy feel to it, which you can see in the MC's facial expressions, and hand-drawn artwork. Alex Ross is a very articulate man, and his Gatchaman art conveys that powerful feeling perfectly. He's right about the details and the show's theme. As I recall, the Gatchaman comic series explored the origins of the five young heroes by focusing on their troubled pasts. Haven't read it yet, but I will get ahold of it. Thank you for your views on this classic 1972 anime.
I loved BOTP as a kid. Seeing it complete in the 2005 dubs was at first an astounding eye opener, and continued to capture me afterwards. I don't think I could have described it better than Ross did here. I can't say I still share his affection for the 7zark7 Casey Kasem AGGGGT OOT OOT Americanization of the show now having seen the original, but I can't argue that if it wasn't for Mr Frank, I would never have had seen this then or now. Props.
0:40 - 1: 40 the whole decade was like that. Music Movies Sports and the Real World in General the 1970's was wild and wicked P.C was not factor. just wished I was older to have enjoyed it more lol.
This feeling you speak about is something I noticed, too and to a degree is also present in Miyazaki Hayo animation, as well, but in the latter it is a different tone, movement, and nuance. Probably for me, the whole thing is enhanced by the fact that I have been to Japan many times - but of course, growing up I sensed this quality, energy and expression of motion, musical choices and all the "dirt" you spoke of. Most of all, though, there is an undertone that is "Japanese" and that is informed by our exotic, visceral experience of it, like when you have a flashback from olfactory, situational or musical recall, that takes you abck to a bitter-sweet time with a girl. Japanese animation from this era is like that. It is distinct, acquired and worn in the soul, to be called up like a specter, activating your consciousness from another time.
THANK YOU! you have earned my respect Sir! wish tv producers and their minions would think that way when trying to modernize/re-make movies, tv shows, animes etc.
@UnanimousDelivers True, of course he was concerned about violence that's why there is a drastic different between the two. The additional information of the Americanized version of the tv theme song was the amount of cutting because of the violence. I heard that on some episodes there was so much violence that no amount of cutting would haved helped so they were nevered aired.
Here's how the Sandy Frank people chose which episodes to adapt: they opened the latest package from Tatsunoko. Seriously. The episodes arrived out of order, and they had no idea if they'd get enough for syndication, so they couldn't leave any out. They also had so-so translations of the scripts. One set of people watched the episodes and timed the dialogue. Another set wrote the BOTP scripts based on the synopses. They did not know if they'd get the episode that revealed Red Impulse as Ken's father, so they did not hint that Cronus was any relation to Mark. The memos must have flown for some episodes.
Well, well i just heard gatchaman is being released again,on dvd&bluray through sentai flimworks. It's set to be released in october for any body that missed the adv release check it out!!
Some modern shows from Japan bust out the sketchy lines whenever they want to pay tribute to the olden days, especially if it's a show involving a hotblooded male lead a giant robot. However, they're still done digitally
yeah, hes right. animation now doesnt even look hand drawn...i like those sort of broken lines and sketchy-ness in cartoons from the past, thats not really around anymore 8-(
No disrespect to the original Gatchaman,...but BOTP was my favorite version of the show. They had simple names, and the voice actors did a fantastic job! But I hated the versions which came afterwards. They went from simple to nonsense...Mark became Ace Goodheart, Tiny to..Hootie (I think)...but they just sounded sillier! Casey Kasem was great as Mark, and like someone else said...Jason was a favorite! Plus, they had names that made sense, like Zoltar instead of Berg (whatever). For me, BOTP was Power Rangers, before they were called Power Rangers! If they ever made an live English version movie of BOTP, and only change the time period of course, and keep it like the show, (without Zark, and 1 Rover 1) then it could be a good show, if done right.
I have to disagree anime in the from the 80s to the 90s looked very hand drawn, just look at Hokuto No ken, Or Sailor moon. it does make one wonder how much anime does he watch? I agree that they are cleaner now, but again I disagree about other things he said. I Think the thing is that he loved the show and that's great. But I do wonder how much anime he has seen.

"...I want to see them as they were."
THANK YOU!
He 100% captured the original style and feel of gatchaman in his art
This show will always and forever be known as G-Force to me. Can't describe how awesome it was to play as them in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom.
They had a video game ❓😳

It would be nice if they rebooted this series. Watched this as a kid in the 80’s( telling my age). G-FORCE forever!!!!!

yes, so true, SO true
I'm not a fan of anime but I love Battle of the Planets aka Science Ninja Team Gatchaman

What does Gathchaman mean in English?
HE DISS NARUTO! *gasp*
I much preferred the Japanese dubbed version over the English one when I was a kid for some reason.
2:12 I disagree, Casshan is WAY more edgier than that of Gatchaman
He never saw that so yeah
@@kiryusannagi5171 I see Casshern behind him though.
Ha-ha.
