    Very comprehensive information. I’ve seen old plants in the ground that have developed thick woody ‘trunks’ after many years. This surprised me a bit because the plant has a delicate, somewhat fragile appearance to it. As you pointed out, it breaks apart easily.

    Mine is now outside for its second winter. I kept two cuttings indoors as an insurance police, but I was amazed that it stood the frost of the past two weeks well, fully exposed. Your trailing motherplant has got a lot of character. It really suits an outdoor garden look. I feel reassured now that I hear about the -5 C.

      Exactly my experience with the smell: I smelled that it was in bloom before I saw the tiny flowers. We couldn't stand the smell, that's why the poor guy was relocated to the balcony : ) So glad it survives though!

      LOL! with the smell, yes its definitely a strange smell and hard to compare it to anything, but thats wonderful your Crassula muscosa bloomed too, they are really cold hardy and my Mother plant even survived the extremely cold Winter of 2010 outdoors when I was living in Sligo, the temperature reached minus 12 the one night and the Winter of 2010 was so cold for weeks and weeks and this plant still came through without a mark on it, its incredible, thanks so much for all of your amazing comments and support and for watching Nathalie, and Hans and I are sending you tons of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from Belfast to Dublin for a wonderful evening XXXX

      @@desertplantsofavalon I am actually in Zimbabwe, so I get perfect weather for these mostly. But I am learning. I mix my own potting mix sand/compost/soil. No fancy stuff around here. I mostly make it drain quickly and try not to over water. My best success is string of tears that is over 1,38 mtrs long. Trailing Jade 1,23 mtrs. Fish hooks more of course but they just grow like mad don't they. I am trying cactus 🌵 now.

      What they most closely resemble is club moss, Lycopodium. Which is how they got their old name of crassula lycopodioides. (-oides is the Latin suffix that means looking like.) Club moss is also often mistaken for a conifer and is sold by florists as princess pine.

    Could you do a video about Opuntia? I'm know that some are very well adapted to the cold. Could you talk about your experiences growing them outdoors in winter? Still loving your videos! Cheers from semi arid and cold Colorado.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tyler :-D thanks so much :-D yes many of the Opuntia's are very cold hardy especially the Opuntia humifusa's and many can survive below freezing, unfortunately I have only grown Opunita outdoors in the polytunnel in Winter and not outdoors in the yard or garden in Winter, I do keep the polytunnel heated at a minimum temperature of 5c / 41F , and keep al the Opuntias totally dry and no water at all until Spring, but I am not able to grow them outdoors here as the humidity in Ireland is over 80% in Winter outdoors, and have to keep them in the polytunnel, thanks so much for your wonderful support and comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Colorado for a terrific Tuesday today XXXX

    When you fertilise your cacti, do you only use tomato feed which you use for flowering or do you use another fertiliser for cacti and houseplants? Especially the ones that aren't of flowering age. Do you use tomato feed on younger plants?

    Thank you for such an informative video! I bought one of these and it's very small and has some yellowing going on so I wanted to hear how you take care of them! I'm giving it more direct sunlight. Do you use grow lights? Can you recommend a good one if so?

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sandy :-D thats wonderful you have bought one of these lovely Crassula muscosa plants, these plants do have a bit of a habit of going yellow, and I find that a regular fertilising helps to keep the foliage greener, I do use grow lights on my indoor Succulents and a very good one I like is by Relassy, its very economical to run and is a wonderful full spectrum white light, here is a link to a video I made when I made a review of this light: th-cam.com/video/ab_p0kCWyPQ/w-d-xo.html Thanks so much for watching and your wonderful comment and have a fantastic Sunday XXXX

      Hi Tina :-D these plants can go a bit sad looking in Winter, and mine always goes quite limp and pale coloured from October until mid January, you may need to re start your plant again from cuttings to revive it, I give mine a good prune and take lots of cuttings to re start it from mid January onwards, they cuttings root really well in water and re starting this plant really helps to green it back up again, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic HAPPY NEW YEAR XXXX

    I have had one for years and had no idea they were cold hardy. Im in usda zone 7 so it gets proper COLD. It goes below 0F occasionally and we spend 3 and 4 days at a time in single digits at least once a winter. So I doubt it will survive here but it still might be possible?

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Alex :-D yes its possible it may survive for you in Philadelphia, the one I have growing in the pot in the Apple Tree in our yard is kept constantly wet and survives zero wet temps here is wet Ireland, but you could always cover it with fleece during the extra cold nights, I do find the one I have outside goes a bit yellow and drops a lot of segments during minus temps though, but I think its more t do with the constant rain we get, thanks so much for your wonderful friendship and amazing support and comments and for watching, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Philadelphia for a terrific Tuesday today XXXX
