  • Hello Everyone. Roxane and I are almost finished with the coop build. But in CRC fashion, we didn't measure correct for the materials we needed LOL. That ended up putting us back a day on the build. The coop is coming out so nice though. Pretty soon, we will be able to hear the clucks and chirps from little birds in the coop. We are both very excited! Thank you for being here with us, we appreciate you all! Enjoy.

    recommend vinyl sheet for the floor in the coop so the wood doesn't absorb any urine/odor - help protect the lifespan of the deck and keep it easy to sweep/clean out when adding to compost.

      @@Donna_Bug yes they did, but I heard that chicken poop was pretty acidic. I wonder if the sealant will hold off the acidity or absorb it.

    We built a smaller version/similar style coop for our chickens. It works great! Last year we bought a Run Chicken battery operated chicken door and it’s awesome! I highly recommend it. It’s metal and you can set it to open when you want it to or it’s preset to open 20 minutes after dawn and close 20 minutes after dusk.

    Looks great! I would second the suggestion you put a single vinyl sheet on the floor to make it easier to clean!

    When you do the fencing dig it into the ground and bury about 6 inches into the ground. Chickens love to excavate and you will have better time keeping critters out if you do this. Just an FYI having chickens before.

    Cheap vinyl flooring would be a good addition. Easy floor clean up, urine won’t soak into the wood floor.

    Pretty cool 😎.... we used to have everything in our house when I was growing up, mom planted all our fruits and vegetables, chicken and ducks, Beas and of course our adorable dogs and cats, and growing up I started learning and helping mom, the best time of my life...when I see your doing I fly back in time... the best of all is that we also were scouts, the whole family and it all really made it all feel that there is nothing better than doing it. Dad was also we us when free from his military work. It was good because there was no war in the military life, but defense against drug and foreign illegal stealing ... so dad at home was a normal thing. My younger brother started getting involved since very little also....very important for our kids, specially when living in such a condition...nature...always good learning with your many doing 🥰

    Here is a thought about the open bottom of the chicken coop. The chickens will go under the coop and lay eggs that if you dont find, they will rot and nothing smells quite like a rotten egg. Most coops go to the ground. Skirting would be a easy fix. Good work you two, really enjoy your channel and wish you blessings.

    make sure when you install that freeze proof hydrant, that you cut both ends out of a 4 gallon bucket. Put it over the faucet and fill with gravel. Then drive metal poles around it so the faucet does not move when using it. Ask me how I know. We have had to replace ours about every 5 years. Till we made it so it does not move. It can break your seal loose on the pipe that supplies water to it AND it can also break the actual faucet. Also, make the nest with doors so you can gather eggs from the outside. IT makes things much easier.

    If you plant hanging baskets of mint around your coop it will detour rodent's from getting in also plant lavender around the bottom of coop for the same reason. Chickens love both and it's good for their immune system as well. Love your coop.

    Interested in what you have have planned for a varmint-proof pen. Also, you might want to (if you haven't already) check out automatic Chicken Door openers on Amazon. That way they get locked in at night and released out in the morning without you guys having to go out to the coop morning and night. Additional point: Nesting/laying boxes are best attached to the outside (but opening inwards for the birds) and with a lift up roof for gathering the eggs.

    • @d.a.tsun5104
      @d.a.tsun5104 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Check out Carolina Coop - they recommend nest box door on the side, like truck bet tail gate, not lift-up roof because (1) not good for the chickens and (2) the hinge on lift up nest box door could leak in rain or snow. I just built my coop in their style myself and the door style they recommend is easy to build, easy to access and clean from outside, and doubles as shelf to put egg basket on while collecting eggs.

  • @joeldoyle6359
    @joeldoyle6359 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Anthony, when you install your frost proof faucet be sure and put rock under the connection to the water source underground so the water can drain out of the vertical pipe when you shut it off AND when you connect a hose to it during freezing weather disconnect the hose when not in use. The hose can prevent water from draining out of the faucet pipe allowing it to freeze and burst.

Something you can wash off would be good. I live the little Windows and the tiny door. They will definitely be safe from small animals.

    Roxanne, the butterfly was telling you to plant him a butter fly garden. With the white trim on the chicken coop it looks like a little cottage. It would be super cute to have a white picket fence over the wire one at least in the front of it. I weather vane for the top with a rooster on it would be cute too. So much y'all could do with the way you made it. peace y'all

    CRC, The new Coop is looking great...when I built my coop, I also was puzzled by building nesting boxes...so I took 5- 2 gal buckets, cut the bottoms 1/2 off, screwed them to the wall with the bottoms facing out and the chickens loved them...they produced plenty and the buckets save some $$...Cheers from Maine.

    SMOKEY MOUNTAIN LYLA recommends a nice ramp with wood slats every 6 inches going down the ramp. Also use two-way hindges on the coop swing door for the chickens. We did this from where I was originally from....Adirondak Mountains! Northern New York, in St. Lawrence County!

    I would have a plug in for electricity so winter heat lamps or other can be hooked up.... I would build the egg boxes inside and put the top to them on a steep angle so they can't roost on it and crap all over it... make access doors on the outside to each box with hooks so they don't have a way out there. Straw in nesting boxes as they eat the grass as fast as you put it in. They need grass for food as well and gravel for their craw as that is their teeth.

    Needing to get more tin not a problem. You will need some for the second well house too. Considering you are making it predator-proof I would have made it the size of the automatic chicken doors. Opening in the AM & closing in the PM - nice if you get home late to have it closed after dusk automatically whether you choose battery, solar, or electric for the door. I went out to eat and my friend got me home late and the raccoon had gotten in the coop. He was chowing down outside on the one he got. In two years time he got 6 of the 7. The coop and the run was there in the rental when I moved in I didn't have the money to improve it. Then the owner wanted his daughter to move back in. Yes it was in a residential area.

    LOL Watching your video on TV right now, and have it here on laptop, while I am typing. Your coop looks wonderful. Leave your post 6 feet tall, that way you can put a net over the top to keep Hawks etc out. And trust me the Hawks will find you eventually. Also predator cloth 6 inches under ground, and wrap predator cloth around fences, so predators can't reach their little hands in there and rip your chickens heads off. Also lock them up at night. I am the only person within miles who have not any of her birds killed and wiped out. My coop is built like Fort Knox. I have pea gravel on their yard where coop is, and I just hose it down and keep it clean and no rats or mice. I do not let them out in freezing weather, but your coop will be fine, no drafts. Might add water for them in side. I don't for my goose or turkey, but chickens to me are more fragile. Plus my goose Roosevelt makes a hell of a mess, and I don't want that mess in my house. We had some old flooring that husband glued down. That makes it good for cleaning. Later ya might want to think of a vent. And you can put a fan in there, when super hot. Just some ideas. You should be proud of your coop. Roosevelt is 20 years old. My big old goose. Tom my turkey is around 9 now. I have one mean old tiny rooster named Popcorn. I have had my birds for years, and they are slowly passing from old age. I am 59 not getting anymore at this state of my life. :-) And I get this white powder from the feed store, you can just sprinkle it in your coop to keep insects out. And put it in their food. Humans can drink it and brush teeth with it. I forgot what it's called, but your birds will not get worms. I have never had any bird with worms. I hope this gives you some thoughts. Love the coop!!!!!!!!! Love you guys!!! Ohh and your windows, make sure that a predator can't poke through and get through windows. Not sure what my husband did, but he nailed something or did something. I am sure you will know. Good move on cutting the door .

    Its looking very very nice. The nesting box would be easiest for yall if it was attached to the back of the building. Having a flip down front facing door on the nesting box keeps the stress down of your birds. Opening a flip top roof can freak them out and possible of them jumping out of box. Using a flush trim bit on a router is the best way to cut those window openings.

    If you can find a piece of linoleum flooring to put on the floor it will be sooooo much easier to clean out. Plus it will help keep the plywood floor in better shape

    The door and the window covers for the openings, you need raccoon proof latch. because those raccoons can work those latches and get into things , like totes for feed . If you put the hinges on the bottom of the little chicken door and make the door taller , you can make that a ramp for the chickens to walk up and get in the coop. Just Saying
