It seems as though spot metering is the "cool" thing to sell to unwary photographers as though it will bring them into the fold of the cognoscenti. However, without at least a minimal understanding of the Zone System and the placement of tones, spot metering is the exposure equivalent of a highway to hell. On the other hand, with a bit of study, experimentation and practice, spot metering will give a photographer two very important skills. It will enable a photographer to precisely expose an image to a pre-conceived vision and it will provide the photographer with a sound understanding of the lightfall and the dynamic range of any scene that they are shooting. It is a gift. Thank you Ansel.

Indeed, if you do not know what you are doing, stay away from spot metering. Even if you have an idea of what you are doing, stay away from it. And the same applies to a "light meter" (as opposed to a subject meter that measures reflected light - like a camera).
The best rule here is that, "you cannot make anything foolproof (Narrensicher) because fools (Narren) are so ingenious."
Nikon added "Highlight-Weighted" into the metering modes mix and that's not foolproof either.
But it may needs the least "deep understanding" of all alternatives.
