    One of the most important tools in a bassist’s arsenal is a well-built DI unit. These devices make it much easier to control the bass signal in the overall mix by both removing line noise and providing better handling of the instrument’s lower-frequency range. The engineers at Ampeg recently upped the ante by offering something more than just a simple DI. Their new SCR-DI pedal is essentially a preamp that merges a DI unit with an SVT-inspired tone stack, EQ, and bass-overdrive circuit.
    The SCR-DI’s die-cast zinc enclosure scores off the charts in terms of ruggedness. You’d be hard-pressed to find many other pedals on the market with an enclosure as solid as this. The EQ and Bass Scrambler overdrive circuits each have dedicated footswitches.
    The EQ side features a full spread of dials for volume, bass, midrange, and treble, along with a control for auxiliary input volume and switches for engaging the pedal’s ultra-lo and ultra-hi frequency boosting circuits. The Bass Scrambler side-borrowed from Ampeg’s BA series combos-is controlled with two dials for drive and wet/dry blending.
    Armed with a Fender P and a 300-watt Verellen Meatsmoke head running into an Ampeg 8x10 cab, I was able to coax out satisfying tones that were reminiscent of a late-’70s SVT, courtesy of the pedal’s ultra-lo switch. It’s no coincidence: The pedal is definitely voiced for producing the SVT’s big and bold rumble, and it does a terrific job of capturing that vibe when coupled with a high-headroom power amp, like the one within the Meatsmoke.

    Just got this recently and its just solid! One question though.
    The input power requirement says "9-12V DC 100mA". Does it mean the pedal is compatible with both 9v and 12v power supplies?
    If so, what is the difference between the two of them? Is there a difference in the performance of the pedal?

    • @1thess523
      @1thess523 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I would imagine, from what I know it's headroom that you get. I have a Friedman buxom boost pedal for my guitar amp and it can take 9/18v and the only difference is it has more headroom with the 18v

    I tried to use this w my porta flex 500 the other night but i dont think i routed it properly. Should i be using the effects loop? I ran the xlr out to the house, and line out to the amp. But it was severely distorted sounded terrible. Should i be dialing the portaflex back to allow the DI settings to take over?

    What comes first in the circuit? The EQ or the Drive section?

    Dumb question here, but he said his signal is going from Bass to Aquilar Head, then to the SCR-DI. Where is he pulling out of the Aquilar Head to go into the SCR-DI ? I'm new to this, so please forgive my ignorance on this.

    • @TylerMillsftw
      @TylerMillsftw 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Aguilar -> Cab to the microphone, otherwise the DI track is from the Ampeg pedal.

    Major volume drop when using the Scrambler section only, how do you adjust that?
    That limits the options quite a lot.
    Volume is not consistent, that could be a problem, especially live.
    Otherwise good tones.

      Robb Jolley It sounds really close the the SVT. I’ve been using this box primarily for over a year now, through the house P.A. I honestly can’t tell you how many bassists have come up to me after I load out my gear and ask me what I was using. Totally worth 200$

    So quick little question about this and it’s a total noob question because I’ve never messed with a di before. Can I run the di box straight into a cab, or do I need amp to chain it through?

    • @rickwood
      @rickwood 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The DI won't have enough power to run straight into a cab. You can use it as a preamp and run it into a power amplifier, like what you'd use to power PA speakers, or straight into the front of an amp, or into the FX return on a bass amp if it has one.

    "capturing the essence of the SVT and the portaflex in a pedal?"
    the preamp and the scrambler circuit of this pedal are straight from the entry level "BA Series" amps that sells for the same price from ampeg, nothing more. its a cheap ba 108 in a box...
    if you want the good tube amp tone you cant go wrong with a Tech 21 VT Bass or sans amp Bass Driver.

      +SweBass I tried out my friend's SCR-DI and it blows my Sansamp out of the water. The drive options and sound of the SCR is superior to the Sansamp IMHO.

      +SweBass "It's a cheap ba 108".
      *goes on to suggest a sansamp*
      Lmfao. Sansamp is a low tier pedal preamp/di. It's only popular, not good.

      This.
      A couple months ago I did sound for a band and the bass player had the Driver DI, he ran it into a 70s SVT. He pointed it directly at me and he had so much high end from that Sansamp that it was overwhelmingly painful to deal with. I buried my Driver DI in the closet and swore I would never use it again.
