Why is this called "Formation" when it should be called "Flying Around in a Circle Until the Fastest Plane Ass-Packs a Slower One?" Ain't nuthin' "formation" about it..
A number of people here have complained that this video shows "Senseless," "Avoidable risk," "Showing off," "Hot Dogging," and "Taking Huge Risk's." While all of this is true TO SOME EXTENT, I normally fly large (100cc class) 3D aircraft, every flight is wrought with possible threats: Wind changes, mechanical, technical, structural, and pilot errors. Every flight. I've had losses, just like everyone else, and I work for a living, just like most of those in our hobby. But if I wanted to "play-it-safe," I'd be flying a trike trainer or Cessna in a slow race track pattern, and only when no one else was in the air. The ONLY TIME I fly a warbird is in formation flight: they just don't have the performance or challenge for me otherwise. Flying R/C is a gamble, and like gambling, don't risk what you can't afford to lose. Mid-airs happen even when there are only 2 planes in the air, and people are flying conservatively. Personally, if I'm not being challenged, I'll stay home and watch TV. While I take great care of my planes and equipment before and after flying, my flying risks my aircraft, perhaps more than you do yours, but because of the skills I've developed by flying the way I do, I have prevented crashes too. My point is, if you want nothing more than to putt around with a Piper Cub, or stay aloft for an hour with your sailplane, more power to you. I would never put you down for it, but it would bore me to tears. If, however, someone else wants to fly 150 MPH pylon racing, or 3D, or formation, or whatever, I can't figure out why anyone would feel the need to castigate someone else willing to take a calculated risk to improve themselves. Unless it's jealousy.
Because they are too chicken shit or cheap to take that risk with their own a\c so they want nothing more than to prevent you from doing it. Reason, you may actually succeed in your attempt.
We fliers enjoy the spectacular crashes (and this was a gooden) but we are not heartless we have been there ourselves and know the the emotions. Sympathy to the builders and pilots and thanks for being prepared to share. Two beautiful models that deserved their time in the air. Hopefully they donate their organs to a future project. I have been flying RC since 1972, I've had more that a few mid-airs. In the formation flying we usually tried to match airplanes with similar performance. Having flying so many years plus building and tested many aircraft for Chermark and Nitroplanes, I've built up quite a collection of planes. When it came to formation flying I used a P-40, P-51, or FW-190 for the prop planes, F-4 , ME-262, or F9F Panther for EDF, B-25, B-17, C-47, or PBY Catalina for the multi engine, J-3 Piper Cub, or Cessna for the Civilian, Christensen Eagle, Pitts Special, or Areomaster for bi-planes. By far warbirds are the most impressive in formation. I had only one midair in formation flying and that was when my F9F nose clipped a F-4 wing and took out his aileron. A mid air is always a risk when we fly.
@@gunrunner4637 Kind of like riding a motorcycle. I flew a P51 for a little while. Took me months to lovingly build it. Crashed on the 4th flight I think. scott firman Actually, I do not agree. In my opinion RC planes crash for the same reasons as full size planes. Pilot error, poor maintenance , bad weather, equipment failure, poor design, and human factors. We do not accept "flying is crashing" for full size planes. Why accept it for RC planes? There are lots of RC planes that survive years of hard flying and are retired intact. I'm sure both pilots knew the risks of flying in this crowd pleasing mass formation. They chose to fly anyway - human factors. Anyways, we should never accept flying is crashing. Almost all are preventable. I would rather have that for a mantra personally.
good call . his was a very odd take on this art / sport . it was avoidable and moving forward from there you'd hope an emphasis on training and safety would be the new mantra .
I agree and VFA-192 aircraft livery remains among the best looking in the Navy-even in the awful flat gull gray over white years during which I served as a member of the Golden Dragons (1966-70).
Agreed, but don't agree with taking avoidable risks with valued built-up models , mine or others, for whatever reasons. Mid-airs are avoidable "accidents" .
I saw my first mid air back in 1989 between to jets. 1/5 scale I think. They hit head on at maybe 200 feet up. It spread the wreckage the entire length of the airstrip. People had called in to report 2 planes colliding it was so loud and real looking. The young kid was at fault and got mad, the older guy looked heart broken but knew crashes happened. Back then even cheap planes like I flew were several hundred dollars and a month to build. I felt so bad for the older guy. I got disoriented in the sun 2 weeks later and destroyed mine. I quite flying until 1998 or so and only flew cheap .049 planes or smaller cheaper electrics. What I paid $300 for back then can be gotten for $100 now all ready to fly. I don't know who was fault here but I feel bad for both. They were nice planes. I assume the jet lost engines at impact since the fuselage was not broken apart like the prop planes was. It is too bad he couldn't fly it down to a better ending. I was also in Texas in 1989. Near the Brazos river where the mosquitos were large enough to carry kids and small dogs away :)
Both pilot's remains were drug tested after the crash. Both were clean. Fault placed on mysterious force emanating from beyond the aircraft. Large Scale NTSB investigating further.
mark pa usa I dislike the wreacks because I understand what it takes 2 do all the work and time and love that goes into into something that u love, i'm the same way when someone gives me an antique ,classic firearm ,I do my very best on the restoration , thx so much 4 the vid , Ive had a few fails in my life
Normally I don't mind seeing the odd RC crash, especially when it's not my own but watching the death of these two beautiful birds was sad. They were well constructed, well proportioned and flown expertly by both pilots. In the air, there was very little to distinguish between them and the real thing. I would have expected if a producer was making a movie that required these types of aircraft, they could have been used without the audience realising they were models. I hope that both pilots don't give up and continue to build beautiful aircraft like the ones they lost. I have a suspicion that's exactly what they're going to do.
Great video! I hate to see to beautiful planes go down. 😏 You are asking for trouble when you put a Jet flying with gas planes. It looked like it was the Jet pilots fault by running up into the back of the the plane and he acted like I wasn't his fault when it showed him after they hit. RIP!!
Chad Cole: Why do you assign fault when everyone flying knows the risk? No no body was at fault. Note: Crashed airplanes do not rest in peace. They go to the local scrap bin and to the land fill.
@@ohwell2790 Need some rules/understandings to avoid collisions. Otherwise, might as well call it a demolition derby. Like, the higher plane goes up and the lower plane goes down (when on a collision course).
As a kid I used to pour fuel on my Testors model planes, light em up and throw them off the deck to simulate being shot down....love those crashes! Keep em coming!
I was there that day in 2012 when those beautiful aircraft collided, and crashed. It was sad, but the only thing anyone can do, is to rebuild, build new, or just change planes. I have 20 aircraft for just such emergencies.
Vacuum up the bits, take them home, and sift for the pilots fingerprints.......that was a MESS !!! A tragedy, such a shame, all the love and devotion in building lost. My sympathy goes to the builders/flyers. Sorry Chaps.. Funny thing is, I have never seen a mid-air with so many models in the air at the one time. Every mid-air i have ever seen, there was only the 2 models flying.....go figure ??
It DOES take a particular type of courage to invest all that time and money into a beautiful model and then actually take the risk of flying it. My hat's off to those that do it. As for the "formation flying", looked more like a fustercluck to me. Shame about the outcome, but hopefully the hosting club has rethought the way they were doing it, learned from it, and moved forward from this incident.
After 45 years of modeling IF YOU CANT FACE THE FACT THAT IT COULD HAPPEN OR IT MAY HAPPEN THEN R/C aircraft are not for you my friend. Its no DIFERENT than buying a brand new car and crashing it in the first month. Being your fault or someone else's.
Every modeler has a shit day my self had to dig a few motors out of the dirt but its always a time to start the next project love building as much as flying therapy I call it gets me into the man shed and away I go good luck with your next project .
Heartbreaking for both. Since it has been 9 yrs from the video posting date, I wonder if both gentlemen got back into flying or did they hang up their wings? I really hope they both got back into flying…both planes were awesome to watch.
A bunch of big RC planes flying at different speeds seemingly without a plan - what could possibly go wrong? Shame about the Tigercat though. A very impressive model.
As someone in the vid can be heard to say, about $25,000 lost in that mishap not counting time. Hard to assign responsibility as both pilots were flying very aggressively from the start. In fact I saw a couple of things that would have had both pilots asked to leave my club's field and not come back. Still, two very beautiful aircraft lost and two pilots staring at time, money, sweat and tears lost in a split second. The one saving grace is that they were just models.
My heart goes out to the pilots. My hats off to the camera man and editor. I know that it was a sad day for the pilots but that video capture was phenomenal.

Some people aren't happy unless they're tempting fate. I thought the same thing.
It’s a thrill flying something that you made, even if it ends in disaster
WOW !!! WELL DONE capturing the images of the mid air !! These always make me sad for the owners/flyers - beautiful, expensive craft -well flown
Commiserations, from across the 'Pond' here in the UK ...
amazing video my friend 💐 thanks for sharing
4:50 - Even the camera's eye misted over when that happened....
Thats why i'll stick to my RC tanks. Usually worst that can happen is a new guy gets a little happy with the throttle and runs into you. Haha.
I feel for the guys in the crash. Hope they returned quickly.
Best impact pictures ever. Completely destroyed! I'm quite certain that the pilots dieded.
Both pilot's remains were drug tested after the crash. Both were clean. Fault placed on mysterious force emanating from beyond the aircraft. Large Scale NTSB investigating further.
mark pa usa I dislike the wreacks because I understand what it takes 2 do all the work and time and love that goes into into something that u love, i'm the same way when someone gives me an antique ,classic firearm ,I do my very best on the restoration , thx so much 4 the vid , Ive had a few fails in my life
More of these crashes please. We own a model shop & need these gimps to keep returning
Way to insult your customers. Crappy attitude and business model. Good luck with that.
Why do they feel its necessary to have several flying at the same time?
If I spent that much time & money...there is no way I'm sharing air space....stupid...of course real airshow turn tragic when they do it.
Very nice video production.
Navy #209 didn't seem to have much damage, by looking at the stills, but came down. what have I missed ?
Who did not see that coming?...(sarc) who ever did, gimme a thumbs up...mid airs make great vids..keep 'em com'in boys..
I only watch these videos for the crashes. Good 1.
Oh boy what a concept they were flying real well until they come Clyde and crashed come on now and irresponsible at best
Great video! I hate to see to beautiful planes go down. 😏 You are asking for trouble when you put a Jet flying with gas planes. It looked like it was the Jet pilots fault by running up into the back of the the plane and he acted like I wasn't his fault when it showed him after they hit. RIP!!
Chad Cole,I think his was the more expensive $25,000 OMG plane
Chad Cole: Why do you assign fault when everyone flying knows the risk? No no body was at fault. Note: Crashed airplanes do not rest in peace. They go to the local scrap bin and to the land fill.
@@ohwell2790 Need some rules/understandings to avoid collisions. Otherwise, might as well call it a demolition derby. Like, the higher plane goes up and the lower plane goes down (when on a collision course).
Ronald Chan so I less than a millisecond you have to diside who is the highest ? You idiot
Two great looking and performing planes. I hope they recreate them. Sorry for that loss.
Oh man I know the feeling. I’ve spent so much money on these things. But it’s a great hobby.
It must be heartbreaking, to see all the time you put into getting one of these planes flying, and then see it crash.
Now I would NOT fly my expensive toy plane with so many other airborne!
It’s gonna happen to every R/C modeler. This was tragic because they were such beautiful and expensive models.
Did anyone see any chutes?
Man I sure hope all the homeowners around the field are RC enthusiasts...
Your club is very lucky that no car was driving down that road at the time. That could have killed someone.
First time seeing a black rc pilot in those rc fields’ videos
Like a hockey rink
😂
Really great video really good pictures it kind of makes me feel bad about the planes but now those guys can build bigger and better ones
What beautiful airplanes they were. Rest in peace.
Tarasdad,not to mention looming divorce.
What did they do that was so terrible that you would ban them from your field ?
Totally overconfident and irresponsible should be regulated by the government thoroughly
