@@laurajercha9587i agree with you, in a way. i think it's just that salvation is a little more complicated than what a lot of us are led to believe.
i believe that salvation is what you find. i don't think the prodigal son would have gone to hell if he'd never come home. i also think plenty of people hide their cruel nature behind a churchgoing facade. salvation isn't a reward for going to church and wearing a cross, it's something you can find here in earth when you walk with god.
i'm hopeful that this moment of kindness and empathy will show him a side of humanity he never thought he would see. maybe he'll want to emulate that. and in that way, she will have saved him.
for all the time i hang out with god, i know i wouldn't be able to show my father's murderer that kind of grace.

My husband loved my kids like his own and helped me finish raising them. He was such a great example of a step parent that my oldest son was comfortable becoming a stepdad. My husband’s son calls me mom and he is my son. He was 18 when his dad and I got married. Not everyone’s story is like mine but I met and married such a wonderful man. I am truly blessed. My husband and I married when my kids were 11 and 9. I told him when he proposed to me that he had to get their consent before I could give him a yes. So he went to talk to them about it, and they put him through the wringer! Asked him a ton of really good, smart questions before they approved him.
They walked me down the aisle at our wedding... and then they stayed with us at the altar, because we took vows to them as well as to each other. We felt that if all four of us were becoming a family, we should pledge ourselves to them as loving parents, just as we did to each other as loving spouses. (We didn't invite them to make any back; that wouldn't have been appropriate for children, who should be free of such strict commitments.)
Eight and a half years later, we've forged a strong team along with their father and stepmother that's raised them into young adulthood. My kids adore him and vice versa. If I hadn't believed he was the best possible person to help me bring them up with love and security, I never would have married him.
I don't understand people who don't put their children first. I've done things wrong in raising them -- I don't know any parents who haven't. But my mistakes have been genuine mistakes, not negligence or callousness or selfish choices on matters vital to their care.
If a parent can't be the adult in the household, they shouldn't have children. Adults don't do everything right, but at minimum they need to be able to provide for their children, protect them from unsafe people and situations, and teach them basic responsibility by example.

He could have at least asked the mother to
      Wash,
      Wear appropriate clothes,
Start addiction treatment as a result of this crime
At least attempt to feign horror at the crime her son committed.

You guys miss the point of having her up there. It actually did help him. Judge Boyd could have thrown out the plea. The plea is only an agreement between defense and prosecution that prosecution won't ASK for more than the bargain says. If the judge thought it too lenient then she could say no and sentence him the way she wants to.
Having the mom and step-dad up showed the judge how worthless his parents were in order to capitalize on the narrative that he had a bad childhood and upbringing. The lawyer is going to drive that home in order to make sure that the judge sentences him in line with the plea agreement which was minimum of 15 years and a max of 35. Seeing as he could have gotten life for his crime, Judge Boyd obviously heard what they were trying to show her and agreed to plea bargain, even though she made it the max.

That's not true. It's a choice. My husband's childhood was as bad as a person's childhood can possibly be, in every way, but he grew up strong, honest, hardworking, and loyal. He made a choice at 17 to run as far and as fast as he could, and he did exactly that. He could have easily wound up like this kid, but he made the conscious decision not to. He's the best parent I've ever seen, and is so much more than the way he was raised. This young man had a chance, he simply chose not to take it.

But what you will find is the majority of people in prison had bad homes or mental health issues, it doesn't excuse their crime, no one is saying they shouldn't be punished, but we can acknowledge that having terrible parents and upbringing is more likely to put you on a bad path than having a happy childhood, I mean it's just common sense right?

Beautiful sentiments by the daughter. That took real love and courage. Very sad to watch this young man go to prison for the bulk of his life. There are no winners in this case.

That victim impact statement was absolutely incredibly powerful. She is 1 precious lady. I wish her nothing but good and pray that God makes her healing a little easier. It's really sad that the kid is so young. I don't exactly know why he killed a plumber. I can't imagine why somebody would shoot a plumber doing their job? Unfortunately as the victim's daughter shaded all of their lives will forever be changed by that one bad decision. 35 years is a long time and I believe he deserves every one of them. So many of us have had problems with drugs and alcohol, yet, we don't go on to kill people. My prayers are with them all. I do feel horrible for the kid that did it, because he did not have a wonderful mother or father. However in no way did I give him the right to take a life.

Wow I was and is sitting here with tears in my eyes…. This broke my heart and I can’t wrap my mind around the fact that your mom is such an evil person…. I hope and pray that you will understand what you did and overcome the guilt that it will bring along with the change that is going to take place in you…but when the change comes I hope you can forgive yourself and realize that you can be a better person in this cruel and crazy world that we live in

WTF kind of mother uses drugs like that with their kid? His mother should also spend time in jail. He did make a horrible decision with what he did so he can’t just go free.
I think the judge and the victims daughter were extremely fair with him. The victims daughter is an amazing woman who is very kind, compassionate and more forgiving than most people would ever be. I hope he takes everything the judge and the victims daughter said into account and truly works on becoming a better person.

There are NO excuses for his actions or behavior. There are NO excuses for the "mother's" behavior either. He has to be held accountable for his actions. I grew up in an extremely abusive alcoholic home- haven't killed/robbed/raped/assaulted anyone, and I don't engage in the behaviors I grew up around.
