gut feeling tells me the same...alyjough John always reads like an outcast of Qumran...The Essenes led a very ritualized /structured lives...John seems more like a hermit or astheic. Going his own way in the desert.

When I was there in 2015 the stone was unprotected sitting in the middle of the excavated Synagogue, but under roof. Part of the industrial (fish processing) area was excavated, but other than that, just donkey corrals with donkeys. There was, however a stone tower about 300 yards/meters ESE of the Synagogue in keeping with the namesake. No hotels. No parking lots. However, this village has been fairly conclusively rejected as biblical Migdal. The biblical Migdal was where we would now find the northernmost extent of Tiberius. This village, attested by Josephus, is now thought to be Tarichaea, indeed a fish processing village, and a prosperous one at that. It hardly matters whether Mary Magdalene was from here or even visited here when we have two fist-century Synagogues, and surrounding mikvah to attest to the presence of active Jewish practice in Galilee in the 1st century.

I wouldn't say "What do we know about Jesus?" isn't an easy question to answer. A great deal of the Gospels are quite intimate and I'm often surprised to find details I wasn't aware of, which makes ancient writers seem much more literal than we are today. The problem is people haven't actually read it. If you're going to ask a class that question you could easily be outspoken by a student who is gifted from Sunday school. It's not a "safe" question for gauging an audience.
Would love to be on that Mediterranean tour..but one question: how can you do a ‘St.Paul the seafarer’ tour without including Malta where he was shipwrecked and kept prisoner for 3 months on his way to Rome to be executed. You can view the catacombs where Paul was kept prisoner and what also later became early Christian burial grounds…lots of unexploited stuff there..
Dr. Tabor, I have only the deepest respect for your knowledge and expertise. So please don't think otherwise after what I say next. My question is a general one: I have serious reservations about the whole dating of the time of Jesus, given that so much of it seems to be based on the canonical Gospels and Acts, which themselves are terribly problematic as reliable 'history' (think Dr. Dennis R. MacDonald, Dr. Robert Eisenman, Dr. Richard C. Miller, and Dr. Robyn Faith Walsh, inter alia). That being said, what is to prevent us from proposing that "Jesus" might in theory at least be contemporary with -- if not identical to -- the DSS 'Teacher of Righteousness'? Which is more parsimonious -- that the dating of the traditional Christian story is all wrong, because it's predominantly based on those problematic canonical Gospels (etc.), or that all those fascinating parallels between 'Jesus' and the 'Teacher of Righteousness' might actually be more than a mere coincidence? I think of Occam's Razor here. ... I don't try to draw definite conclusions, of course, but neither do I dismiss such a possibility out of hand. Knowing the Judish religious mentality as well as I do, even though it's difficult to describe, I would suggest that this character of the "Essenim" known as the "Teacher of Righteousness", was a retrogressive MYTHical image for the group of the fifth-fourth century BC scribal priest EZRA. EZRA in the book named after him WAS a TEACHER (TALMA) who TAUGHT the Judeans the revised Levitical Law of the "Deuternomical Code". According to at least one historian (A. van Hoonecker 1890, as cited in the "Jewish Encyclopedia" article about EZRA the scribe) his return to ISRAel with the Babylonian exiles after the decree of the Persian 👑 should be dated to the seventh year of Artaxerxes (Ahaseurus) II in circa 400 BC. Reading Judish typographism into the SYMBOLIC dating of the 390 years "Period of Wrath" as being a symbolic number amounting to 12, the original number of the Tribes of ISRAel and then unltimately to 3, the number of the LAST remaining tribes of "Judah", "Benjamin", and "Levi" by the time of the domination by the Roman Empire, we trace back from that year to 790 BC; the time of the beginning of the reign of King UZZayah. Reading this as Judish typography again, we see a rhyming connection between the name "UZZayah" and that of "ASHurAYAH". The ASSyrians in the 700's BC CONQUERED and DEPORTED (as the Babylonian Chaldeem under Nebuchadnezzar II did in the 500's BC) ten of the Israelite tribes into ASSYria. In the "Book of Judith", Nebuchadnezzar II is metaphorically referred to as "King of the ASSYrians", presumably because he was from Mesopotamia, like them. The "Jewish Encyclopedia" dates the reign of UZZayah from circa 788- 732 BC. THIS ending year would be ONLY TEN YEARS BEFORE the "secular/gentile scholarship" fixated year of 722 BC for the conquest and deportation of Israelites by the ASSYrians under King Tigleth Pileser. We KNOW that ancient dating methods of chronology were NOT exactly accurate, ESPECIALLY when used in a religiously metaphorical/symbolic context. Therefore, I would argue that the "ESSENIM", who could also be referred to as in the books of the Maccabees as the "CHASIDIM" or "Holy Ones", were referring NOT AT a contemporary figure, but BACK TO the famous and respected Levitical priest scribe EZRA, whose name was not only similar to that of the nation of "ISRAel" BUT whom the ENTIRE post-Babylonian Exilic composition of the "Old Testament" writings could be attributed! EXCEPT of course for those of the "Prophets", the "Psalms", the "Song of Solomon", and the ORIGINAL Levitical Law Code. He and his sons, who obviously as fellow priest-scribes would have assisted him, were so IMPORTANT (though curiously IGNORED at present) that the TOMB of the "Ibnim EZRim" was located in the Kidron Valley basically directly opposite the site of the Mount Zion Yahwah 🏛️ they had served so fervently!

Who is the Dead Sea scrolls like all these ancient Jewish texts are written in the perspective of a suffering people and humans are always looking for someone to magically save them... According to THE COMPREHENSIVE HEBREW CALENDAR by Arthur Spier, the Rabbinical tradition of orthodox Judaism believes that Creation happened in October of the year 3761 BCE, and that Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the Temple built by Solomon in the year AM 3339. The actual year in which the 1st Temple was destroyed need not concern us here, this chronology -- flawed though it might be -- having come to be believed at some point. Add 390 years to AM 3339 -- i.e. to 422 BCE, which is 3,339 years after 3761 BCE -- and you get to the year 32 BCE, and then 20 years after that you get to the year 12 BCE. Then there are two generations of 40 years each, which brings us (first) to c. 29 CE (there being no year ZERO in the Julian Calendar) and then to the final 40-year period . . . ending in 69 CE, the year when the Hebrew Calendar year AM 3829 has the destruction of the 2nd Temple -- off by 1 year by the standard reckoning of 70 CE for the destruction of the Temple. [See page 21 of Spier's book.] I think there's a good chance that the Teacher of Righteousness [Moreh-zedek] was active in that final generation, from 29 CE to 69 CE, being one of the major personages on the Messianic Jewish side of the conflict, having become convinced by their readings of 'prophecy' (especially DANIEL's "70 Weeks" prophecy) that they couldn't lose against the hated Romans, those 'Sons of Darkness' from the War Scroll. Of course, the Jews LOST that war, and Rabbinical Judaism -- though still retaining the milestone dates of AM 3339 and 3829 (i.e. 422 BCE and 69 CE) -- ceased believing that the Messianic Jews who followed that Teacher were correct. Indeed, guys like Rabbi Tovia Singer (from what I gather) interpret all that 490-year timeline to amount to 'proof' that the Jewish people had come to suffer punishment from Ha-Shem for their sins . . . that God used the Romans the same way He had earlier used the Babylonians, to punish a sinning people who hadn't lived righteously. I would argue that the super-strict Qumran community DID believe that their fundamentalist version of Judaism WAS such that they were living up to their side of the Covenant . . . and that God would then be obligated to do what He had promised to do, should they return to His ways, by granting the Chosen People the victory which would inaugurate the End of Days period where the entire world would come to worship the One True God. Alas, the Messianic Jews got their asses handed to them, and the version of Judaism which survived -- which the Romans tolerated -- was a tamed version that acknowledged Rome as the legitimate governmental authority over the subjugated provinces of the Roman Empire. But the Jews who wrote the DEAD SEA SCROLLS were the Messianic Jews who mistakenly thought they could win -- that they couldn't lose, such was their faith in the God of Moses, etc. I don't believe that the Teacher was a 2nd or 1st Century BCE figure -- not in the least. He was active in the 80-year period leading up to 69 CE, and it was the defeat of the Teacher -- probably named Eleazar -- which the victorious Flavians riffed on when they concocted their parody of Messianic Judaism: the Christian religion. Joseph Atwill, in two particular chapters of CAESAR'S MESSIAH ("Eleazar Lazarus: The Real Christ" and "The New Root and Branch"), makes the case that the various 'Eleazar' characters in Josephus' JEWISH WAR are an amalgam of the one actual character from real history, the Messiah whom the Romans actually had to defeat and DID defeat, after which they invented the pseudohistorical 'Jesus' character and depicted HIM as being the crucified Christ, setting his story 40 years before the crucial events of the War, all-the-while modeling his career (i.e. his 3 + 1/2-year 'Ministry') on the military campaign of Titus, son of (the later deified) Vespasian. Assuming a belief that the 1st Temple was destroyed in 422 BCE (i.e. AM 3339), and that the "70 Weeks" prophecy was applied to a timeline beginning then, well, it's a given that the final 'generation' living from c. 29 CE to 69 CE would believe that The End Is Nigh . . . and, in a way, they were absolutely right.
have you ever seen and interpreted the ancient jewish Huqoq elephant mosaic ? ( huqoq alexander mosaic ) it presents the war between 2 entities and their respective leaders (guess who). Jodi Magness is still losing over this .

There are no inscriptions indicating Who the people are -- except for the 'H' letters adorning some, the Greek letter Eta. Your "guess who" comment suggests that YOU, Willem, have an idea as to what the Huqoq mosaic depicts, so why not clue us all in on your interpretation?

WTH? By "Zacharias" are you referring to the father of John the Baptist? or to some other person with that name, perhaps the son of Barachias [Matt. 23:35 & Luke 11:51] slain between the altar and the Temple? Barbara Thiering believed that John the Baptist was the Teacher of Righteousness, and that Jesus was the Wicked Priest ["JESUS THE MAN" & other books], but this is the first I've heard of "Zacharias" being the "ToR" . . . And why would the figures whom YOU claim were depicted on this mosaic be honored in the 5th Century, when it was made? I'm not saying I agree with Jodi Magness' opinion -- I don't really HAVE an opinion about the Huqoq mosaic -- but her explanation at least IS an explanation, whereas what you've described seems to me to be just . . . well, rambling. @@mickeydecurious It is the last book in the Bible because it describes the end of this Earth age and when John wrote it he was 90 years old at least in virtually all the other apostles were dead, so there is no added scripture after that. Secondly it reflects on the Book of Daniel so if you doubt The Book of Revelation then you also doubt The Book of Daniel
The true teacher of righteousness is Jesus Christ, though the Essenes could know him only after they had renounced their vows to the cult of purity and virtue. Jesus preached repentance and forgiveness not bodily purity and virtue. The Essenes were the ones best prepared and poised to become his believers and scribal biographers. But only a few had the courage to break with their community. Such breaks are essential for the understanding of Jesus’ doctrine. Forget the Greco Roman additions, they are pagan and stand as contradictions to the original Jewish born doctrine. Thank the Romans for preserving the written texts that we have today. As it is primarily a critique of the Jewish cult of sacrifice as practiced in the Temple, the priests of that temple would just as soon see it lost. But don’t think those Romans knew what they were doing. They tinkered with it just enough to show how little they really understood of its revelatory meaning. They mucked it up a bit and it’s our job to wash it clean.

If Tabor says the Teacher was 100 years prior to Jesus and Eisenman says the Teacher was Jesus's brother in CE ,why could both not be correct ? Teacher of Righteousness is a title which more than one man recieved. IE; The Dalai Lama. Different individuals but all under the same title at different times.

When I was there in 2015 the stone was unprotected sitting in the middle of the excavated Synagogue, but under roof. Part of the industrial (fish processing) area was excavated, but other than that, just donkey corrals with donkeys. There was, however a stone tower about 300 yards/meters ESE of the Synagogue in keeping with the namesake. No hotels. No parking lots. However, this village has been fairly conclusively rejected as biblical Migdal. The biblical Migdal was where we would now find the northernmost extent of Tiberius. This village, attested by Josephus, is now thought to be Tarichaea, indeed a fish processing village, and a prosperous one at that. It hardly matters whether Mary Magdalene was from here or even visited here when we have two fist-century Synagogues, and surrounding mikvah to attest to the presence of active Jewish practice in Galilee in the 1st century.

I wouldn't say "What do we know about Jesus?" isn't an easy question to answer. A great deal of the Gospels are quite intimate and I'm often surprised to find details I wasn't aware of, which makes ancient writers seem much more literal than we are today. The problem is people haven't actually read it. If you're going to ask a class that question you could easily be outspoken by a student who is gifted from Sunday school. It's not a "safe" question for gauging an audience.

Dr. Tabor, I have only the deepest respect for your knowledge and expertise. So please don't think otherwise after what I say next. My question is a general one: I have serious reservations about the whole dating of the time of Jesus, given that so much of it seems to be based on the canonical Gospels and Acts, which themselves are terribly problematic as reliable 'history' (think Dr. Dennis R. MacDonald, Dr. Robert Eisenman, Dr. Richard C. Miller, and Dr. Robyn Faith Walsh, inter alia). That being said, what is to prevent us from proposing that "Jesus" might in theory at least be contemporary with -- if not identical to -- the DSS 'Teacher of Righteousness'? Which is more parsimonious -- that the dating of the traditional Christian story is all wrong, because it's predominantly based on those problematic canonical Gospels (etc.), or that all those fascinating parallels between 'Jesus' and the 'Teacher of Righteousness' might actually be more than a mere coincidence? I think of Occam's Razor here. ... I don't try to draw definite conclusions, of course, but neither do I dismiss such a possibility out of hand. Knowing the Judish religious mentality as well as I do, even though it's difficult to describe, I would suggest that this character of the "Essenim" known as the "Teacher of Righteousness", was a retrogressive MYTHical image for the group of the fifth-fourth century BC scribal priest EZRA.
EZRA in the book named after him WAS a TEACHER (TALMA) who TAUGHT the Judeans the revised Levitical Law of the "Deuternomical Code". According to at least one historian (A. van Hoonecker 1890, as cited in the "Jewish Encyclopedia" article about EZRA the scribe) his return to ISRAel with the Babylonian exiles after the decree of the Persian 👑 should be dated to the seventh year of Artaxerxes (Ahaseurus) II in circa 400 BC. Reading Judish typographism into the SYMBOLIC dating of the 390 years "Period of Wrath" as being a symbolic number amounting to 12, the original number of the Tribes of ISRAel and then unltimately to 3, the number of the LAST remaining tribes of "Judah", "Benjamin", and "Levi" by the time of the domination by the Roman Empire, we trace back from that year to 790 BC; the time of the beginning of the reign of King UZZayah. Reading this as Judish typography again, we see a rhyming connection between the name "UZZayah" and that of "ASHurAYAH". The ASSyrians in the 700's BC CONQUERED and DEPORTED (as the Babylonian Chaldeem under Nebuchadnezzar II did in the 500's BC) ten of the Israelite tribes into ASSYria.
In the "Book of Judith", Nebuchadnezzar II is metaphorically referred to as "King of the ASSYrians", presumably because he was from Mesopotamia, like them. The "Jewish Encyclopedia" dates the reign of UZZayah from circa 788- 732 BC. THIS ending year would be ONLY TEN YEARS BEFORE the "secular/gentile scholarship" fixated year of 722 BC for the conquest and deportation of Israelites by the ASSYrians under King Tigleth Pileser. We KNOW that ancient dating methods of chronology were NOT exactly accurate, ESPECIALLY when used in a religiously metaphorical/symbolic context.
Therefore, I would argue that the "ESSENIM", who could also be referred to as in the books of the Maccabees as the "CHASIDIM" or "Holy Ones", were referring NOT AT a contemporary figure, but BACK TO the famous and respected Levitical priest scribe EZRA, whose name was not only similar to that of the nation of "ISRAel" BUT whom the ENTIRE post-Babylonian Exilic composition of the "Old Testament" writings could be attributed! EXCEPT of course for those of the "Prophets", the "Psalms", the "Song of Solomon", and the ORIGINAL Levitical Law Code. He and his sons, who obviously as fellow priest-scribes would have assisted him, were so IMPORTANT (though curiously IGNORED at present) that the TOMB of the "Ibnim EZRim" was located in the Kidron Valley basically directly opposite the site of the Mount Zion Yahwah 🏛️ they had served so fervently!

According to THE COMPREHENSIVE HEBREW CALENDAR by Arthur Spier, the Rabbinical tradition of orthodox Judaism believes that Creation happened in October of the year 3761 BCE, and that Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the Temple built by Solomon in the year AM 3339. The actual year in which the 1st Temple was destroyed need not concern us here, this chronology -- flawed though it might be -- having come to be believed at some point.
Add 390 years to AM 3339 -- i.e. to 422 BCE, which is 3,339 years after 3761 BCE -- and you get to the year 32 BCE, and then 20 years after that you get to the year 12 BCE.
Then there are two generations of 40 years each, which brings us (first) to c. 29 CE (there being no year ZERO in the Julian Calendar) and then to the final 40-year period . . . ending in 69 CE, the year when the Hebrew Calendar year AM 3829 has the destruction of the 2nd Temple -- off by 1 year by the standard reckoning of 70 CE for the destruction of the Temple. [See page 21 of Spier's book.]
I think there's a good chance that the Teacher of Righteousness [Moreh-zedek] was active in that final generation, from 29 CE to 69 CE, being one of the major personages on the Messianic Jewish side of the conflict, having become convinced by their readings of 'prophecy' (especially DANIEL's "70 Weeks" prophecy) that they couldn't lose against the hated Romans, those 'Sons of Darkness' from the War Scroll.
Of course, the Jews LOST that war, and Rabbinical Judaism -- though still retaining the milestone dates of AM 3339 and 3829 (i.e. 422 BCE and 69 CE) -- ceased believing that the Messianic Jews who followed that Teacher were correct. Indeed, guys like Rabbi Tovia Singer (from what I gather) interpret all that 490-year timeline to amount to 'proof' that the Jewish people had come to suffer punishment from Ha-Shem for their sins . . . that God used the Romans the same way He had earlier used the Babylonians, to punish a sinning people who hadn't lived righteously.
I would argue that the super-strict Qumran community DID believe that their fundamentalist version of Judaism WAS such that they were living up to their side of the Covenant . . . and that God would then be obligated to do what He had promised to do, should they return to His ways, by granting the Chosen People the victory which would inaugurate the End of Days period where the entire world would come to worship the One True God.
Alas, the Messianic Jews got their asses handed to them, and the version of Judaism which survived -- which the Romans tolerated -- was a tamed version that acknowledged Rome as the legitimate governmental authority over the subjugated provinces of the Roman Empire. But the Jews who wrote the DEAD SEA SCROLLS were the Messianic Jews who mistakenly thought they could win -- that they couldn't lose, such was their faith in the God of Moses, etc.
I don't believe that the Teacher was a 2nd or 1st Century BCE figure -- not in the least. He was active in the 80-year period leading up to 69 CE, and it was the defeat of the Teacher -- probably named Eleazar -- which the victorious Flavians riffed on when they concocted their parody of Messianic Judaism: the Christian religion. Joseph Atwill, in two particular chapters of CAESAR'S MESSIAH ("Eleazar Lazarus: The Real Christ" and "The New Root and Branch"), makes the case that the various 'Eleazar' characters in Josephus' JEWISH WAR are an amalgam of the one actual character from real history, the Messiah whom the Romans actually had to defeat and DID defeat, after which they invented the pseudohistorical 'Jesus' character and depicted HIM as being the crucified Christ, setting his story 40 years before the crucial events of the War, all-the-while modeling his career (i.e. his 3 + 1/2-year 'Ministry') on the military campaign of Titus, son of (the later deified) Vespasian.
Assuming a belief that the 1st Temple was destroyed in 422 BCE (i.e. AM 3339), and that the "70 Weeks" prophecy was applied to a timeline beginning then, well, it's a given that the final 'generation' living from c. 29 CE to 69 CE would believe that The End Is Nigh . . . and, in a way, they were absolutely right.

Barbara Thiering believed that John the Baptist was the Teacher of Righteousness, and that Jesus was the Wicked Priest ["JESUS THE MAN" & other books], but this is the first I've heard of "Zacharias" being the "ToR" . . .
And why would the figures whom YOU claim were depicted on this mosaic be honored in the 5th Century, when it was made? It is the last book in the Bible because it describes the end of this Earth age and when John wrote it he was 90 years old at least in virtually all the other apostles were dead, so there is no added scripture after that.
Secondly it reflects on the Book of Daniel so if you doubt The Book of Revelation then you also doubt The Book of Daniel
The true teacher of righteousness is Jesus Christ, though the Essenes could know him only after they had renounced their vows to the cult of purity and virtue. Jesus preached repentance and forgiveness not bodily purity and virtue. The Essenes were the ones best prepared and poised to become his believers and scribal biographers. But only a few had the courage to break with their community. Such breaks are essential for the understanding of Jesus’ doctrine. Forget the Greco Roman additions, they are pagan and stand as contradictions to the original Jewish born doctrine. Thank the Romans for preserving the written texts that we have today. As it is primarily a critique of the Jewish cult of sacrifice as practiced in the Temple, the priests of that temple would just as soon see it lost. But don’t think those Romans knew what they were doing. They tinkered with it just enough to show how little they really understood of its revelatory meaning. They mucked it up a bit and it’s our job to wash it clean.
