    just scored mine for 629.99 USD total with a free desk mic. I own an FT-991, a FT-817nd, and other yaesu handhelds / mobiles. The 891 is the first "modern" mobile radio they've released in years. Yaesu is far overdue for a refresh of the 817nd and 857. The mechanical filters of those radios are far outdated. As far as I can tell...the 891 is a steal and can be had for 599 usd now.

    I just ordered one of these rigs. One of the attractions to me was the LACK of V/UHF. I already have a dual bander in my vehicle so I don't need V/UHF and there is no sense in paying for it if I don't need it. I think it will be the perfect mobile rig for me.

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This comment makes sense with the price of this radio TODAY. When it released, it was over-priced without the VHF/UHF features. Don't forget that the previous models of this radio had VHF/UHF all-mode, so it was more than just an FM Dual Bander

    • @bhambhole
      @bhambhole ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I rarely use the VHF/UHF ability on HF rigs. I buy specifically for HF operation and would rather use a dedicated separate transceiver for 2M. I concur with your opinion.

    I own an FT-891 and I really like it as a portable on the go radio. I know the specs say it has 2.0 amp draw on standby. The specs are wrong. I have two watt meter and power analyzers that I've check mine against, they both read less than half (.98a). I love its DSP/DNR, but I still don't want to give up my FT-857, I like em both.

    Hi Jason. Just watching this and thinking about a first HF rig. I've been around Amateur Radio for a long time. However Haven't really gotten beyond Licensing. (wife just woke up. Gotta go. will get back.) Just wondering if this video is just the radio? Stand alone? or what else are you needing to be on the air during this video presentation. I just want to start... Thanks. • @sethlavinder
    @sethlavinder 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's a completely different radio than the 857, adding the IF DSP to the rig is a tremendous leap forward from an 857! It is a worthy upgrade! With those other features like built in sound card interface and USB cat control it's a much better rig. If you want the best of both worlds find a good used Icom IC-7000 , it's as close your gonna get to the best blend of 857 and 891

  • @bills1613
    @bills1613 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I agree. The 891 may be a fantastic rig for what it does. I don't know, I don't have one, but I do have and have had a 857 for about 12 years or so and I just can't see the reason for it other than forcing everyone to move to the 991A (which I think as a great 'shack in a box' rig for the shack but it ain't no mobile/portable 'shack in a box' rig that the 857 was).
    I initially got my 857 to do mountain topping VHF/UHF contesting (before SOTA/POTA EXISTED) and came to love it for the whole complete radio that it is.
    I love the 'Shack In A Box' concept. I bought my Kenwood TS-2000 for the home shack in about 2005 and have never looked back.
    I think there is a much larger desire/demand for this concept in a rig than we would be led to believe. Kenwood had the base 2000 rig and Yaesu gave us the portable and even mobile 857 with the ATAS antenna option. Both FANTASTIC rigs that serve a much desired and in my opinion needed purpose.
    I know how popular the Kenwood 2000 is/was. You only have to go to Wikipedia where it points out that the 2000 has more eHam.net reviews than any other rig on that site. And I know that the 857/897 had to be one of the most popular rigs ever sold!
    I never went to a Field Day without seeing one or several around setup up operating. You can go watch almost any YT DXped videos and you almost always see a 857 sitting somewhere between all the K3's doing something. It's just too good, versatile, and reliable not to have around.
    No one is filling this void or niche now.
    As I get older and my eyesight gets worse and worse I defiantly appreciate a larger display but I would rather keep the V/U capability of the 857.
    If Yaesu wanted to make a HF only mobile rig, then fine. Just charge less than the 857 and keep the 857 in production, or better yet make a 857 capable radio with a larger display and maybe charge a few more bucks for it.
    I think making the 891 with a larger display while dropping the VHF/UHF bands and charging more for it and then discontinuing the 857 was a HUGE mistake!
    Just my opinion for what little that's worth.....

    The FT891 is way beyond the old FT857, since if offers IF-DSP, requires NO extra filters like the old FT857, which used old technology audio DSP. I don't need vhf or uhf in my HF radio, so 6 meters is enough. I might just trade my mint FT-950 for one.

  • @kg4tri
    @kg4tri 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    No it isn't overpriced even though they took out VHF and UHF they added other options .I wish they added an internal sound card to run Digi modes.I have never used the 2m and 70cm in my 857 and they addressed the all the shortcomings of the 857.The only thing I d like to see now is drop price to $800 and throw in separation kit for free that is the deal I had when I bought my 857 or add internal sound card and price remain about where it is

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well you say it isn't overpriced, then you say you'd wish they drop it to $800.
      I believe it is over-priced. Most radios will drop in price after they've been out for a while. The cool thing about the 857D isn't just VHF/UHF, it is also that VHF/UHF is all-mode. So you can't just get a FTM-100 or a Kenwood V71A to replace the missing VHF/UHF from the 857D, because those are FM-only radios. If you use SSB on VHF/UHF, as I do, then it takes even more away from the features of the 857D.
      Yes the HF is updated with more features than the 857D, but to me that isn't worth dropping VHF/UHF all-mode and raising the price by $100.

    • @kg4tri
      @kg4tri 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They only dropped the price on 857d a few months before the release of 891 to try to reduce the stockpile if it wasn't for the 891 then the price would be about $800 for 857.They did the same thing with the 897 just be for 991 came out. even if both were $800 or so they would be cheaper than the Icom (7000 not 7100) and Kenwood options.I have used Icom and Kenwood VHF/UHF and yaesu radios in a 18wheeler hauling Farm and oilfield equipment off road as well as on and the durability of icom and Yaesu where much better so taking Kenwood out of the equation that it leaves Icom and Yaesu. Icom is more expensive then the 857 or 891 so it is a good value at around 800 plus or minus yes they took away VHF and UHF but if they kept it in the 891 then it would increase the cost to about the price of ic7000.when you look at the bigger picture from all manufactures it is a good price.

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 857D price has been around the same amount for about a year now, actually.
      I agree in not including Kenwood because they don't make a radio similar to these, except maybe the TS-2000, but it isn't a mobile radio.
      After the IC-7000, Icom doesn't actually make a radio like this anymore either, if you discount the IC-7100 which is overpriced due to it including DSTAR. BUT the IC-7100 is a lower price than the FT-991, and quite frankly is a better radio than the FT-991.
      The $850 price of the FT-891 isn't a bad price for a 100-watt mobile HF radio, it just doesn't align with the rest of their product line, and that was my point.

      @kg4tri 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok a year ago but still the reason to lower the price was to start clearing the stock in preparation for the 891 for more than a decade the 857 has been around it was priced between $800 and $850 some dealers threw the separation kit for free I paid $799 with free seperation kit 2011 most of the $800 to $850 was to do with dealer mark up when the newness goes away the price will come down to the same price the 857d sold for over the last 10 or more years for around $800 I think the original 857 hit the market in the 90s.the 891 will level out and sell for the average of 857 the new features coast about the same to manufacture today as the 2m and 70cm did in the 857 .The coast is set not on what you would pay so much as manufacturer shiping wholesale and retail profit.Just because it isn't perfect for your needs doesn't mean it is overpriced the 891 will sell for the same average price that the 857 did during it's run and it has been around long then any other competitor's options . FYI I got my 857d in 2011 from Gigaparts it ended up on back order because of the earthquake that damaged the Nuke plant in Japan they had to reroute it to exit another port

      Yes that is the big feature that I didn't hear in this video. Some people don't like the effects caused by DNR, but I like being able to reduce the atmospheric noise so I hear mostly voices.

    lost vhf/uhf.. and missed huge opportunity to ADD C4FM. i have the 991 with C4fm and this could have been a good mobile companion rig (C4FM on 6 meter would be a plus with band sensitive to man-made noise)
    IMHO... a big miss. I'll save my $$$ for v.2 (maybe)

      Fusion would have jacked the price up even more. The FT-991 has Fusion, they need to have one without it for those folks who don't care about digital, especially on HF

    The 857d rx is terrible. Owned a few for mobile and i was always tweaking it to hear stations. I would never own one again. Now the 891 has a better rx on paper. At new 567.00 from r and l electronics i bought one for mobile. Could careless about 2/440 to many cb extras.

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed on the RX of the 891, it is quite good. Also it is a great price right now. The 2/440 missing is not just FM though, it is also sideband, which is quite fun to do.

  • @tx2sturgis

    Since IF DSP does cost more to implement it makes sense it will cost more to buy, and should make the receiver on the 891 much better than the 857/897.
    However receive current consumption has gone way up (by almost 3 times) making this new radio less desirable for portable use on battery power.

    dude, you need to update your video on this radio. Its only $649.00 now at HRO. Id be more of a fan of yours if you kept up to date rather than reposting a 6 yr old video. C'mon Jason get with the game.

    • @HamRadio2

      Reposting? You can clearly see it's 6 years old so why do you think it's been reposted? Radio prices change continually, this isn't news.

      TH-cam now allows you to see the date each video was posted. You might try comparing that to the date on your watch or phone to learn how old a video is. Then try watching something newer and see how much has changed.
