I remember watching this video long time ago and I didn't understand, but now rewatching it again with a bit more experience everything makes sense! Thank you!
Probably the best explanation for the X-Rite color. Your calibration with zebra at 50% is excellent. Thanks a lot. I use 2 camera and your other tutorial is also excellent.
this video speaks the truth, the other youtubers who talk about color correction only touch the surface. This is in depth and the best video I've seen yet after seeing 20 others videos.
Thank you Tom! I cannot adequately explain how much this video helps me. Doing video work is not my day job. Every few months I make fitness videos for my wife’s business. And I have struggled solving the problems that you explain in this video. Now I have the solutions! One million thank you‘s!!
I've been a big fan of yours for years and you are still proving why... Thanks for simplifying the process of getting proper exposure and colour both on location and further in post!
Hi Tom....I’ve just learned more in 15 minutes than the last two months! The fog has lifted from my understanding with some of the items in here. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise!
I have found this to be the most helpful video on TH-cam for me. I saw it years ago and based off it I learned how properly set exposure and color. Thanks, Tom.
Man, the best explanation about the color balance ever. Thank you so much, I waited so long to find a video that could explain exactly how to do what you just did on this video. I look forward to continue learning from you more and more. Have a wonderful weekend. Sincerely Jorge Tampa FL

One of the best and most enlightening tutorials i have ever seen, so thank you very much Tom
THANKYOU. Everyone touches the chips !!! The whites are so delicate. I've seen assistant camera lay these things down in the dirt ! Not to mention they cost hundreds of dollars.
Ummmmmm.... this was amazing..... Thorough and very easy to understand and follow along. Thank so much for taking the time to make it. Superb work! I have watched a few videos on Color correction and exposure and was not 100% clear what I needed to do in camera or post, but this clearly laid it all out. Very well done Sir!!!!
Well, that was the most in-depth yet concise explanation of how to make adjustments in Premiere with that color chart. Thank you. I don't know why X-Rite can't explain how to use the color chips. I am bookmarking this video - thanks!
After yet another shoot where I swagger in and sling a camera around looking like I know what I’m doing then watching my footage, as usual, turn into out-of-date cottage cheese in the edit, it’s time to wise up on the fundamentals. What a great video Tom! Attending the University of TH-cam means endlessly sifting through information from people often as clueless as me so once again, I’m back with Tom Antos as my Sherpa. I’ll be buying both of these cards and learning how to do it properly whilst revisiting this tutorial amd having a proper good word with myself in the process. The term ‘guiding light’ has never been so appropriate.
Wow thanks so much for this video. It gave me a much needed explanation of several points I didn’t understand. Seems so basic . It’s like learning the alphabet so you can read and write. Thank you so much Tom
This is an absolutely superb tutorial. As a newbie, this is one of the most succinct and usefully informative videos I've ever watched on setting the correct exposure for film work. A really big thank you from me.
Dude! I bought the video passaport a long time but until today I never figured out how to use it correctly! And, principally, the reflection values of each exposure line on the card! Best video of all, very well explained! This video should be on X-Rite's page! Thank you very much for helping us all.
This is probably the more straightforward and precise video I've ever watch on the subject. I now understand what I couldn't figure out for a while now. Thanks!
Brilliant video! Well explained, thoroughly concise, far reaching tutorial on how to expose your shots. The colour grading section was the best I have seen on youtube too. Keep up the great work!
This is by far the best practical explanation of exposure and color I've ever seen! Thanks :) You should definitely post a video with a complete exposure and color correction walkthrough for vlog!
Tom! Thank you a thousand times over! This was the clearest explanation. No issue following everything whatsoever. Please continue doing tutorials, you just changed my filmmaking life!
Thank you very much for the lesson. I'm just starting to do video shooting and processing and it was very interesting and useful for me to find out. for me this knowledge is priceless.
Hi Tom, great video - love all your vids, and thank you for always sharing and for the insight and time you spend making these pictures and tutorials. As a couple others have mentioned, and I’m sure you already know, but since our fellow filmmakers watching will undoubtedly be buying these expensive but necessary little cards/charts (or their passport versions), we’ve gotta be careful not to touch the color chips by hand and keep them out of the sun, since any smudges or transfer of oil from the fingers or fading could result in their early demise, leading to a not quite spot-on color balance. A small scratch the size of a razor cut or slight scuff could throw them off. Also, less important here where we’re just going off the middle gray, but also important to ensure that black on the bottom (or any of the colors) have even lighting - no reflection or glare, especially when using the chart for color matching that palette in Resolve, etc. Again love the informative video and all your videos, you’re a big part of my choices and education, just want to make sure other fellow filmmakers & videographers or folks just starting out who are spending big $ buying these lil’ charts take good care of them so they last a long time. Thanks brother Edit: spelling error
My hero! The most streamlined procedure ever described. There's no substitute for practice and experience, is there? Thank you for the time and effort that you put into these videos!
Thanks for, not only explaining, but also showing how to do it and what it should look like. Best "How to" video I've seen. Thanks Tom. Going to Subscribe.
I've only seen a couple of your videos so far and they are amazing! I'm subscribing and turning my alerts on. I've never had someone be able to justify buying an expensive/accurate color chart, but your method and results are impressive and very educational.
Very nice, thank you. So is middle grey supposed to fall at 40 or 50 IRE? you said two different things, when you were shooting in camera you said ideally 40 IRE, but in post you set it to 50. Thank you.
Record at 40% (often zebras are a 5’ range so 35-40% range in my camera for instance).. then in post put the 40 IRE that you recorded at 50 (middle grey). If you are shooting LOG formats sometimes you may want to over expose by 1 or 2 stops.. rarely 3 or 4 if your camera’s codec can handle the stress of heavy color correction. (Most can’t but 2 stops is probably fine for most LOG cameras). So you recording IRE of 35-40 might be higher like 50 or 60... find correct exposure first then over expose 2 stops to then bring back down in post... WHY? Less noisy shadows and better dynamic range in LOG format... as long as your codec can handle it. 4K 60mbps..probably not. 4K 150 mbps.. 2 stops, maybe a bit more. QuickTime ProRes up to 3 or even 4 stops? I tend to shoot close to the correct mark and round up to more light aperture so I will be spot on to 3/4 of a stop over exposed using incident light meter. I find a incident light meter for daylight shooting is more consistent, however grey cards are great to double check and pull color from later. I’ll probably order the X-Rite Passport Video checker myself for the compact color chips.
He addresses that more in the description: "Another thing you will notice is that on the camera and monitor the middle gray registers as 40 IRE, but in Premiere Pro’s waveform it shows up as 50 IRE. It might get confusing, but just know that if you exposed your shot well in the camera, it will look good even if the editing program shows a different IRE value. The difference is due to several factors, like the chart scale and depth bit value, etc., but I don’t want to get into that right now. The main point is that the middle gray in regular video should be 40-60% - exactly how much depends on your preference. To figure that out, I suggest you guys do your own tests."
I am about to go to a film school in July but I doubt they will explain these things in a such clear manner so I am gonna keep watching videos like this to make sure I stay on top of everything filmmaking and to beat my filmschool peers of course.
I watched like 5000 vídeos to learn this, n your video is the one, that's what I wanted for sooo long, thank you soooo muchhhhhhh.
But what does the fox say?
Very nicely done and explained. After 20 years of working in the industry, I've never seen such a clear, simple yet thorough explanation. Thank you!
Couldn't agree more!
Two years later I'm coming back to this video and still learning from it. Thanks Tom.
I remember watching this video long time ago and I didn't understand, but now rewatching it again with a bit more experience everything makes sense! Thank you!

Loved this video. It blew my mind when I saw that rainbow of colours fit the boxes on the vectorscope. Thank you!
Thank you Tom! I cannot adequately explain how much this video helps me. Doing video work is not my day job. Every few months I make fitness videos for my wife’s business. And I have struggled solving the problems that you explain in this video. Now I have the solutions! One million thank you‘s!!
This 3-year-old video is the best I've seen so far to perfect colors in video. Thank you!
BEST video on colors and exposure. Thanks!
I have been watching TH-cam tutorials all day and far few explained these concepts as well- thank you so much!
Definitely the clearest, and most comprehensive explanation I've seen to date...! Nice work.
right, like set the zebra to 50, but actually the grey card is 40 ire so you need to dial it down, ....blindly; very precise , in deed

Probably the best explanation of getting correct exposure and proper colors on TH-cam.
Just remember to not touch the charts as you will "de-calibrate" the colors with dirt.
I just came to the chat to write this same thing but you beat me to it.
THANKYOU. Everyone touches the chips !!! The whites are so delicate. I've seen assistant camera lay these things down in the dirt ! Not to mention they cost hundreds of dollars.
Very informative! I plan to show this video to some of the "newbie" filmmakers that I work with. Thank you.
Finally a description of how to use the color chips on the Color Checker. Nice job!

Incredibly on-point video! Thank you, Tom! You are the very best. Greetings from Copenhagen, Denmark!

Hey there Tom. I really have enjoyed your videos. Very informative. Just purchased my GH5 and so much to learn on it. Your videos are helping a lot.
Really helpful video Tom - thanks for posting. After years of shooting stills I've just got a URSA 4k, and wow there is so much to learn.
Yes it's a different way of thinking about exposure than I still. URSAs are great cameras. Have fun shooting with your camera!
This video is absolutely brilliant
really helpful video for new filmmakers, thanks Tom!
Great video. Clear and focused. Thank you!
Best tutorial on this subject! Thanks for making this!
I never leave comments but this video ! Man oh man, was this a great and informative video
