Hey Chris, must have just missed you out there by a week or two - I did this one with a buddy on 03/12 and followed essentially your same route, but in reverse, and also went across the road to loop around Barbara's Lake. Saw a big rattlesnake right on the edge of Little Sycamore only about a half mile up from the nature center... reported it to the ranger and she told me it was the second sighting of the year so far. Beautiful day, some of my favorite views in OC for sure. Cheers!
Nice, yea, that whole park is nice. I might do a guide for Barbara's Lake too, it's a nice family hike over there. This is the time to do it - in a few months it will be yellow and brown when everything is dry.
This is a wonderful trail. Thank you for all of your observations. You should have your own TV show. The information you provide makes a big difference.
Cris, thank you for showing me the beauty in my own backyard. I live in LA county, but I worked in Costa Mesa (well...until events took over in 2020 that necessitated working from home for the last couple years, but we won't get into that since everybody's already well-aware of what I'm talking about) and have an office in Newport harbor. My daughter got her undergraduate degrees from UC Irvine back in 2018 and it's always a kick when I see parts of the university in your overviews. I've always been of the mindset that I have to drive at least an hour (and most times far more) for adventure. That makes every hike more of an expedition and many times, you're just not up to dotting the i's and crossing the t's to make a really good hike happen. Over the years, you've really opened up my eyes to some options far closer and much less involved in planning. When it warms up a little, I plan to look into some of these local trails. I did recently get my permit for Mt. Whitney from the lottery back in late March for a July 8 day hike to the summit. This'll be my third time up the mountain and I plan to watch your video to get re-acquainted since it's been about 4 years.
Ah Kenny, thank you so much, I'm happy to hear that the guides have been helpful. There are so many gems out there, I just wish I had more time. And yes, I live right by UCI, good call. It's such a great place to live, especially with a kid. And also it's pretty easy to hop on an expressway pretty much anywhere except north. Congrats on the Whitney permit score. I didn't get the lottery this year but will grab a permit at some point when the unclaimed ones get released. I think I'm due to shoot another video there. I try to hit it at least once every year. Hope to see you down in the area on the trails sometime!
One of my favourite places to hike and you picked a great route. I love all of the options at Laguna Coast and the opportunity to do something different every week either in Laguna coast or by connecting to crystal cove/el moro or even hopping across the 133 to top of the world. A great area for local hiking.
I know so many great hikes here. These are my local trails, and I love all the different loops and options here, on foot or on my MTB. Did you know that at one point they proposed this whole area become a National Park? I don't think it went anywhere but it was floated at government levels at some point.
Thank you so much for this. I just did this hike yesterday and it was awesome!!!

I once lived in Irvine for a few years and this was really my favorite trail near to my home.
Thank you for a wonderful overview and a great description. This trail is on my agenda this spring.
You're welcome & this is a great time to go - when it's all green like this it's just breathtaking!

Look forward to this hiking trail in Laguna, Orange County/SoCal. I wonder how this trail is compared to other OC trail, Black Star Canyon Falls.
This is def less rough than the creek portion of Black Star - much different and def worth a visit, especially now when it's nice and green.
Hopefully, you're still taking comments that aren't from bots.
Great hike.
