Dear Sir: your delightful tale by Saki was received this evening, and enjoyed with a great deal of delight. I can't thank you enough! Were it possible, I would be pleased to extend my gratitude by return of post, enclosing one of the cheeky, irreverent cross stitch projects for which I have become legendary among my equally cheeky and irreverent friends and family members. [nibbling end of quill] Many joyous returns of this festive holiday season to you. [quill down. remaining drops of whiskey tossed back with finality]
Tee hee. 😂 Thank you Simon! I still remember the childhood chore of having to sit down to write thank you letters to various relatives regarding Christmas presents received ( usually slippers) I'm 60 now - and mobile phones have been invented 😁 I sincerely hope that you had a merry Christmas and please accept my very good wishes to you for the new year. 🥰
I wonder how many here remember the nightmare of "thank-you letters"? What a burden it was, even when one was genuinely grateful for the gift and genuinely fond of the contributor.
Too funny, but so real to a senior of advanced decades ! Holidays were always a doubled edged sword for children of conscientious parents - a gift meant a thoughtfully composed expression of gratitude in one’s best penmanship, on good paper, with as few blots as possible.
Such an appropriate story for the season. And I totally agree with Saki's "solution" to the problem of thank you notes. Well read as always. I'm looking forward to another year of great stories from bitesized Audio.
Lovely new years treat Congrats for another great year on your channel Steady growth. A wonderful variety and supreme narration. Unmatched on here. You have a gift my good man. Keep going
I listened with my earbuds on. My wife was wondering what was making me laugh. Out loud, as they say. I thought about it for a few seconds, and decided not to explain.
I find this story totally unbelievable. It is hard to believe that any Victorian would call His son Egbert! However, it is impossible to believe that any good Victorian Family did not know how to play bridge!
Tomorrow when I finally tackle the tiresome task of sorting through the holiday junk mail, I plan on announcing it to the household at large by exclaiming “just look at the devastating accretion of correspondence incidental to the festive season!” 😂😂
Oh, you must see soo MANY “Thank you’s”, that you don’t know what to say; however, I DO so gratefully appreciate your charming voice & the well chosen literary geniuses with which you deftly exude seeds for my imagination to grow forth from on a regular basis! Happy Holidays, Season’s Greetings, & Warm Wishes this New Years! 🎊🪭🎊
i would love to hear You read Saki's short story Esme. Unless i am mistaken, it's about a hyena. It contains the lines, "I cursed at it. I hurled my sandwich case at it. I made absurd ineffectual cuts in the air with my thumbless riding crop. I really don't know what more I could have done." His slightly veiled social commentary is brilliant !:-)

A violet by a mossy stone
Half hidden from the eye!
Fair as a star, when only one
Is shining in the sky.
Tee hee. 😂

My Victorian grandfather was indeed called Egbert. Born 1888. LOL

Simon how the hell are you I hope you and your family have a great New Year
❤❤YAY❣❣❣
To everyone who received a bottle of wine this year lol
Simon, you actually look quite a bit like Saki. I saw his picture and thought it was the narrator instead of the author.
Did not hit for me. Back to the ghosties and such!!
Thanks
